How Peugeot Caused an Advertising Stampede

In this series, Squideo has examined the best ways to turn advertising content into gold. Now that we’ve broken down the eight key ingredients, it’s time to dive deep into some examples of stellar advertising. This week, the advert in question was picked by Squideo’s Account Director, Adam Shelton.

When asked why this Peugeot advert had become his favourite, Adam said: “It accomplished everything an advert is meant to. It’s memorable, it’s unique and it keeps the product front and centre. Plus the bit with the elephant is hilarious.”

The Peugeot Roars

You don’t need to be a driver to have heard of Peugeot. You’ll have encountered this French brand from buying your first bicycle to equipping your kitchen. Peugeot was founded in 1810 – over 200 years’ ago – by the Peugeot family who retained majority shares in the automotive company until 2014. Peugeot manufactured a vast variety of products in its early years, from hand-held saws to pepper grinders.

Eventually they branched out into bicycle production, car manufacturing and motorcycle making. Amazingly, they still continue to make kitchen tools under Peugeot Saveurs. Cycles Peugeot and Peugeot Motorcycles are also still on the go, and they make vehicles for motor racing events under Peugeot Sport. Up until 1986, they even had their own cycling team which won ten titles at the Tour de France.

Like many car manufacturers, Peugeot have acquired other brands and ownership of this company has changed hands repeatedly. In the 20th century, Peugeot took over Hotchkiss, Chenard-Walcker, Citroën and Chrysler Europe. As of 2021, Peugeot is owned by Stellantis – a multinational automotive manufacturing corporation which was created after the merger of major American, French and Italian manufacturers. A member of the Peugeot family is part of Stellantis’ senior management, demonstrating the power and influence Peugeot has built and maintained since 1810.

2 Fast 2 Peugeot

Created by Euro RSCG of Milan-Italy, The Sculptor was released in 2003 to critical acclaim – winning numerous international awards. The car promoted in the advert, the Peugeot 206, was released in 1998 as a replacement of the 205 model. Within ten years, the 206 had become Peugeot’s best-selling car.

The advert was so popular that fifteen years later the BBC show Top Gear recreated it in celebration of the Peugeot 206’s anniversary. On its twentieth anniversary, Peugeot also released a recreation of the advert with the Peugeot 208 replacing the 206. To accomplish this, several months were spent at Ajeenkya D Y Patil University in 2002 where engineers painstakingly converted the Hindustan Ambassador.

In the advert, a motorist turns his Ambassador – an iconic Indian car that started life as a Morris Oxford – into a Peugeot 206. Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., who has since gone on to become the director of Netflix’s first Dutch film, The Sculptor is considered one of the best car adverts of all time.

According to the award-winning Creative Director Adrian Holmes:

“A film I’ve always loved is a commercial for the Peugeot 206 called ‘The Sculptor’, made by Euro RSCG Milan in 2002. You must know the one – the young Indian guy who gets an elephant to sit on his old jalopy (amongst other methods) so that it ends up looking like the car of his dreams. Everything about it – the story, the editing, the music, the casting – is simply frame perfect. Apart from anything else, it stands as a monument to the brave and imaginative client who said ‘yes’ to such a wonderful and daring piece of work.”

Peugeot Rides Again

The 206 went on to be Peugeot’s best-selling model of all time, and one of the most popular cars ever made. Like the product, the advert selling it also swept the award boards in 2003: winning at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

From the car’s release in 1998 to 2003, the year of The Sculptor’s release, sales of the Peugeot 206 increased by 146 percent. But why was The Sculptor such a big hit?

Real Renovations

The protagonist of the advert starts out with a Hindustan Ambassador and ends up with a Peugeot 206: the car of his dreams. The audience's expectation, after seeing the Ambassador destroyed, is that a pristine Peugeot 206 would be rolled out at the end. But that doesn’t happen. This car is dented, pummelled, bashed… there’s nothing pristine about it. Yet the protagonist still gets the attention of everyone who sees his new (old) car.

The fact that this advert really turned a Hindustan Ambassador into a Peugeot 206 is part of the reason this advert became so memorable. If they’d used CGI or switched out the car, the advert would have been like any other that uses a product swap.

International Intrigue

The name Peugeot forms an instant connection to its heritage: the brand is undeniably French. Setting the advert in French countryside or on Parisian streets would be predictable. Instead, The Sculptor is set in an Indian city. Why? To show that the car belongs anyway. Can be desired by anyone. It has international appeal.

The setting is also the home of the Hindustan Ambassador, India’s most popular car which was manufactured from 1957 to 2014 and called the “King of Indian Roads.” Once it fell out of production, the car became wildly collectable – but eleven years earlier in 2003 they were still easy to come by. A popular everyday car; much like the Peugeot 206. Stylistically, however, they’re worlds apart which is what made this a great before and after choice. The 206 was meant to be a new design for a new millennium, leaving behind the boxy style of the 20th century.

Mood Music

The advert plays to the song Heaven Is A Place On Earth by Raja Mushtaq, later remixed as Husan by Bhangra Knights. This bhangra dance song ended up charting, made it on Now That’s What I Call Music! 55, and sold over 20 million copies. Bhangra dance music is a non-traditional Punjabi music originating in British-Asian communities. It first emerged in the 1970s, seeing a resurgence in the 2000s that Peugeot got ahead of with its music choice. 

This upbeat song only briefly appears after the protagonist successfully converts his Hindustan Ambassador into the Peugeot 206 and the non-traditional bhangra music symbolises the successful alteration of the vehicle.

Here’s a recipe that differs a bit from the original version because I tend to use smoked pancetta instead of pork jowl and a little splash of olive oil - everything else is basically the same. 

Forget the onion, parsley or Parmigiano… you only need pasta, eggs, pecorino cheese, pork jowl, black pepper and salt.

To be fair, there’s still a lot of debate going on about this recipe: not everyone likes pork jowl so pancetta is a good alternative, Parmigiano is accepted as a substitute for pecorino cheese (even though its flavour is different and definitely sweeter) and some people use only one egg yolk per person plus an entire extra egg for the cream.

Ingredients (4 servings):

400 g pasta (either spaghetti, bucatini or half-sleeves)

5 medium egg yolks (one per person + one more)

200 g freshly grated pecorino cheese

250 g pork jowl (sliced or diced, according to personal taste)

black pepper, freshly ground (as much as needed)

40 g rock salt

1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil (optional)

In a large pot bring at least 4 L of water to a boil and add the rock salt. Once the water comes to a boil again it’s time to add the pasta.

Cook the pork jowl in a very hot pan, over medium fire. The original recipe doesn’t require any olive oil but I usually heat up a tbsp of premium Italian extra virgin olive oil, then add the meat.

Once the fat is translucent and the meat is nice and crispy turn off the heat and collect part of the grease in a heat-resistant container (a small plate or cup would do). Let it cool for a minute or two and keep the pork jowl in the pan.

In a separate bowl mix the egg yolks, pecorino cheese and pepper, then add the grease and stir until the mixture feels as smooth as possible. Scoop more grease out the pan if you need it.

Set aside some water from the pasta pot (approx. half a glass). Drain the pasta when it’s ready and put it in the pan with the pork jowl and leftover grease to stir a couple of times but don’t turn on the heat again, otherwise the eggs will overcook.

Add the cream, then stir again and pour in a little splash of pasta water in order to make the carbonara super creamy, but not runny.

Long pasta (such as spaghetti or bucatini) should always be cooked in a deep pot to ensure it can fully submerge right away. If you’re struggling with a limited choice when it comes to pots and pans in your kitchen... well, I mean, you’re not really supposed to do it, but what the heck - break the spaghetti in half, with a twist. And I’m not even kidding: in 2015 two MIT graduate students, Ronald Heisser and Vishal Patil, used mathematical modeling to demonstrate it’s actually possible to halve spaghetti with a bending and twisting motion.

I usally make the cream while the pasta and pancetta are cooking. If you're not familiar with the recipe I'd suggest making the cream as your first step - this way if something goes wrong you can start again, without any pressure.

Using pasta water to soften the cream is not strictly necessary, sometimes you don't even need it.

The amount of meat and cheese can obviously be adjusted to your personal taste: if you like the salty flavor of the cheese and use more pecorino it’s maybe better to reduce the quantity of salt in the water when cooking your pasta, but once you get the hang of the recipe you can try all sorts of combinations to find out what works best for you.

So there you were, running down the busy streets of London, carrying vase upon vase of flowers.

Because you were in such a rush, you didn’t see the tall man step into your view, crashing straight into him and dropping a vase. Your jaw dropped at the sight of your arrangement all over the pavement before your eyes snapped up towards the clearly embarrassed man.

“I’m so sorry,” he mumbled.

“I told them I would bring four options. Not three, four!”

You tugged the bag of flowers closer to your chest, making sure they were all okay. The man in front of you cleared his throat to gain your attention. When you looked up, he pushed a strange but beautiful plant into your arms.

“What’s this?” you asked.

“Your fourth option. If possible, could you return the vase to me?” The man patted down his tweed coat, finally pulling a card out and handing it to you. “There you go, that’s my number and address.”

You sat in the back room after you had closed and the sun began to set, ordering the materials you needed for the centerpieces when you came across Neville’s business card. So that’s exactly why you stood outside of Neville’s apartment, knocking at the door with a little plant in hand.

“Just a minute!” Neville’s voice was muffled from inside the apartment but you could hear his footsteps fast approaching. For some reason, your heart began to beat a little faster in your chest.

Neville opened the door, faltering at the sight of you. You didn’t notice this in your hurry yesterday, but Neville was actually quite handsome. “I’m alone,” he blurted out. You furrowed your brow at his implication. “I mean, um, there was nothing really to interrupt.”

You weighed your options: have a drink with an incredibly handsome man or sit in your shop waiting to get a call back from some asshole named Steve who was your new distributor? That wasn’t too hard of a choice.

You and Neville spent the night chatting, telling each other about your lives. He told you all about his job as a professor at a boarding school in Scotland. He explained how he went there as a kid and dreamt of becoming a teacher there.

“So, professor,” you began, “what do you teach?”

Neville’s smooth facade dropped for a moment before he said, “Environmental science.”

“Impressive.”

“And you? I’m assuming you’re a florist?”

“Right you are, professor. When you ran into me yesterday I was actually going to a consultation for a wedding.”

Neville moved a little closer to you, his arm wrapping around the back of the couch. Your breath caught in your throat at the way he stared down at you.

“Is that so?”

“That is so.”

“You must be quite busy with weddings as it is the season for it, Mrs. (Y/L/N).”

Neville was incredibly close now. His arm had moved from the couch to your back, pulling you towards him and you didn’t mind at all. His eyes flickered down to your lips, drawing an inaudible squeak from you.

“It’s Miss, actually.”

“Perfect.”

Once you had finally comprehended the situation, it was dark. Lavender and Parvati were long gone, having left you to your own devices to process. At some point you had carried yourself to Neville’s apartment, knocking on the door.

I'm not too familiar with the other fandoms, only Harry Potter. But our most wanted characters from Scream would be Gale Weathers, Sidney Prescott, Kirby Reed, Brooke Maddox, Emma Duval, Tatum Riley, Dewey Riley, Tara Carpenter, and Sam Carpenter !! And our most wanted characters from Marvel would be Peter Parker, Michelle 'M.J.' today - harry potter hc and the

💕feminists witch organization💕

ginny weasley started a feminists club in hogwarts, and you can't change my mind.

one day at the middle of the breakfast, she stood up, asked for a but of attention and told everyone she's starting a feminists club that will take place every week at saturday afternoon. she took a poster she made earlier and placed it above the entrance with some spells. (later it was discovered that no one could take that poster down other than herself - come on, this girl grew up with fred & george)

she was ready to fight everyone so that this club could take place, but surprisingly got much support. hermione approaches here at the evening and offers her help with organization and legalization if needed. they make beautiful pins together, on the other side of which they will be able to post time and place of the meeting (just like coins for the dumbldore army).

fred & george provide them much help with spreading the trustful word among older girls and offer their help with anything they can do.

luna begs her father until he finally agrees to post some feminist calls and tips in the quibler.

tonks comes to almost every meeting and teaches young women to defend themselves.

mcgonagall defends them among other teachers.

harry also spreads the word - he's the chosen one, people listen to him.

(not really) surprisingly, pansy parkinson signs up too and they discover very fast that she knows much information about defending yourself without magic.

cho chang is one of the main activists and she didn't miss a single meeting. once, she even escaped detention to come.

the patil twins both really like history of magic, but turns out they know the history of feminism and great women too.

while they all slowly graduate the club doesn't close - other girls start leading it and teaching newcomers what 'the great' taught them.

once rose granger-weasly and lily luna potter step in hogwarts, the first thing they do is sign up there.

the older ones teaching young girls how to 'glue' their skirts and dresses so that they wouldn't lift up in the air.

all of them wearing 24/7 pins that say in big bright letters 'I am a woman, and I'm proud of it' and bracelets with different slogans.

after many researches coming up with a spell that turns charms your underwear so that when someone will touch it - they'll get electric shocked.

having a pepper spray spell and a tazer spell.

helping girls with abusive boyfriends (fathers, etc) escape relationships and get mental help.

making rings that automatically call mcgonagall/granger/any supportive teacher/one of the members when you press it.

feminists. witch. organization.
