I love that meg was a whole fleshed out character with a story and history and motives of her own way before meeting castiel (unlike most female interests on this show #RIP) and that their relationship was basically all chemistry-based in the beginning because they had sooooooo much. and then s7 happened and she stayed with him under the pretense of it just being her main form of self-protection, but it’s clear they actually began to care about each other and wanted to keep the other safe. she actually looked out for him and defended him against the winchesters when he was already in a very vulnerable, self-hating period and I’m like ���yes go off queen.”

sometimes I wish the rest of her arc hadn’t been just about them in the end but it’s okay because it was such a bittersweet, tragic ending and done well all considering. I also wish they had a lot more onscreen interaction while they could and it makes me insane how they never show cas grieving her, even for people who somehow only saw it as platonic (which HOW????) you can’t deny that was an important friendship for him at least y’know. but also consider: when he calls her thorny beauty <333

samruby: SAMRUBYYYYY. I used to be “I don’t actually ship it, because it’s #toxic” can you believe. now I’m very “I see it, I enjoy it” + your samruby endgame & t4t truthing definitely made me see the light and enjoy it more and see the true depth of it. so many people were involved in manipulating sam to make the apocalypse happen from the angels to azazel & lilith, but ruby never saw sam as just her part of the lucifer group project. she ALWAYS saw it as helping sam reach his true potential and stop being afraid of his powers and become the king of hell she knew he could be.

and she cares about him soooooo much. we don’t talk enough about how she’s the only reason he’s still alive. like, his revenge mission in-between s3 and s4 was becoming a suicide mission and she refused to let him isolate himself and work/drink himself to death. she protected him, stayed with him, and helped him get stronger & smarter instead. she's literally the only reason he’s still alive, the reason why he kept fighting and got confidence in himself.

also as basically the only m/f romance we get to see interact naturally and often onscreen because spn refuses to let women be main characters, their interactions in s4 make me sooooo. like yes there is the obvious inherent sexiness of blood drinking, that is a given. but they have multitudes! they’re SOFT around each other!! the way she encourages him and cheers him on as he masters his abilities <3 the way he smiles at her approval and support <3 <3 the way she jokes about him being a buff nerd <3 <3 <3

I think in canon the ending is definitely a tragic love story, with ruby truly believing they felt the same and were on the same page (which is still delicious tho.) but with how many pointless characters got added and brought back later on, there was sooo much they could’ve done with a ruby resurrection (not whatever that cameo in s15 was.) a redemption arc, her turning against lucifer, her mysterious past being explored, her and lilith being besties. a sam and ruby relationship post-apocalypse would've been so interesting. like it was the biggest betrayal of his life but also he owes her everything and truly never felt more powerful & confident in himself than when he was with her. also I think it’s insane that they almost never bring her up after s4. like that was the most important relationship of his life outside of jess and you’re just never going to bring that up. I cannot find the suncaptor post about it, but is that he feels like he can't grieve her?

last note: my controversial samruby opinion I guess is that I refuse to think ruby 1.0 & ruby 2.0 are different demons (RESPECT the long con) but do enjoy the ruby-is-jess headcanons when I’m feeling evil (jess and ruby both believed in sam and hated how his family treated him, coincidence? maybe, maybe not)

I read the ask about "gay Cas." Respectfully, I disagree that the so-called confession was unambiguously romantic - and I am not one of "the straights," I'm a member of the LGBTQ+ community myself. I do think it was intended to be readable that way, as a nod to shippers, while not being something that can ONLY be read that way. The problem is that they were - perhaps unwittingly - giving that nod to the biggest bullies in the fandom. While your other anon may have encountered mostly people using "gay" for Cas as an umbrella term, I've seen people literally saying "he only likes men" to taunt and bully people like me, a Megstiel shipper/Megstiel endgame truther (they DID end up in the Empty together, so my ending's as likely as anyone's). The same people will refuse to acknowledge fact that Cas was very clearly shown to still have feelings for Meg in Season 15 and even try to insist that all of their previous romantic interactions no longer count but claim that I MUST concede that Cas was *in* love with Dean. I don't, and I don't think you have to either.

Disclaimer that I am also an anti-Dean megstiel-shipping member of the lgbt community, so I’m very biased in your favour, BUT.. I completely agree with everything you said here.

I sort of saw the confession scene as the writers blatantly pandering to the d*stiel shippers to try to gain more publicity (because the writers are trash and don’t actually gaf about the show and that’s absolutely something they’d do), but I sort of agree with what you said- that they probably meant it to be open to interpretation so as not to piss off any one group of fans. Which is annoying and cheap, but… so is most of the show. So.

I also agree that- while I can concede that there are a number of people just using “Cas is gay” as a shorthand for “Cas is a member of the queer community in some way”- the vast majority of people saying it are d*stiel shippers (because they make of a majority of the fandom, let’s be honest) that wanna rub it in the face of all the rest of us that “SEEEeeEEeeeE!!! CaS Is ONLY iN lOve wItH DEEEAAAN!!!” Which is annoying as hell because A.) Cas IS a member of the queer community, but he absolutely is not a homosexual male- which is what they claim- and his identity ends of getting ignored because a lot of the ones claiming him as lgbt are doing it in such a fetishistic and reductive manner B.) There’s no evidence Cas was ever in love with Dean whatsoever up until the confession scene and plenty of evidence that they straight up hate each other, and C.) Castiel CANONICALLY was attracted to and cared about Meg. Like… that’s not up for dispute, that’s not a matter of opinion. That was intentionally written into the script. You can argue that it was an unhealthy relationship or that it was a poor plot choice or whatever, but it WAS canon. Period.

My idea is, if possible, do it via an ao3 collection; I’ve participate in ones like that before and they’re very complete and have the option to make requests public, so people that haven’t signed up for a gift exchange can see them and add their creations to the collection when the time comes. If I can’t figure it out lol, I’d do it via another survey. In either case, I’ll publish the prompt list on tumblr and pin it on my blog, for anyone who prefers to see it in that format. I might leave them a few more days, but for now I think they should close between the 20th and the 25th of September.

Just to clarify a few details:

Yes, that sign up will be more exhaustive (so you can write your do-not-wants etc.), and I’ll work on Rules and FAQ posts.

Ideally, I’d like for all works to be added to the collection, including fanart, fanvids, gifsets, etc. I’ll leave some links in the FAQ about how to easily add those to ao3, and pages that work well as hosts for images with the page. I’ll also reblog them and publizice them on tumblr, with credit (with a list of all fills, and possible others for each type of content -fanvids, fanfics, fanart, etc.). If someone doesn’t want to post them there, they’ll only be added to those lists.And after the authors are revealed feel free to post them anywhere on your own. I also have invitations, in case someone doesn’t have an account but wants to participate.

My idea for now is, in order to provide a variety of prompts even for those that don’t sign up, to allow up to three prompts of each possible type of fanwork to those who do. I.e. someone can have 3 prompts for fic, and 3 prompts for fanart, and 3 prompts for playlists.

It’s a Megstiel fest, so works must be centered around Megstiel as a romantic pairing on its own right, and not as a stepping stone for anybody. Background pairings, past relationships, etc., are of course allowed. I’d ask that people consider not to tag them in the pairing section, adding them instead to the additional tags or the notes, so that fans of those ships don’t have their tag drowned by content of something else (i.e. Samwena, Deanbenny, etc.). If you’re giving a gift the recipient asks you not to include a particular ship (or anything other than Megstiel), please respect that, as well as any DNWs.

There’s the question of polyships with Megstiel. I’ve thought about it and I think they COULD be part of the fest IF, and ONLY IF: they have been explicitly requested in a prompt; and Megstiel still takes central stage (i.e. not a fic with established, say, Castiel/Crowley where Meg is only part of a hookup and then only Castiel/Crowley is said to continue together, or one where Sam, Castiel, and Meg have a threesome and Castiel and Meg break up after it so either can pursue Sam). If someone doesn’t request it, it’s a moot point. And of course, if someone’s gifter isn’t up to it, they don’t have to write it, so polyships will also be limited to one per type of prompt, while at least another one is exclusively about Megstiel (if you request a Anna/Castiel/Meg fic, there must be at least another one for Megstiel only. If you request a third prompt, that one must be Megstiel only too).

Those are the only limits I’ll put to actual content. Any rating, warnings etc. will be allowed, as long as the recipient doesn’t say otherwise (i.e. someone says they’re fine with graphic violence but not major character death, or someone requesting only mature and explicit fics or only G and T playlists).

I’m thinking to leave that rule (addering to DNWs etc.) for only the personalized gifs, while those who participate (either signing up or outside it) by filling extra prompts have more leeway as long as they don’t post it as a gift to the prompter, as those fills would be for the entire Megstiel fandom and not personalized. Archive warnings MUST be tagged. Other warnings are left to discretion of the writer in the page, but I’d ask that any content that could be more potentially triggering is tagged, mandatorily in cases of personalized gifts.

Or more precisely, let's say you new megstiel multishippers. I've noticed some of you who like to condemn the old megstielers for our hate of destiel. However the hate stems from the actions of destiel fans and on the merits, or lack there, of the destiel ship.

You tell us it's because homophobia. Funny thing is most the old megstiel fans are LGBTQ+ in one way or another. Many of you weren't here between the time Meg kissed Cas and she was still alive. Do you know how much shit we got during that time? And from who? Destiel fans.

And even after Meg died it still continue. After all, the only person Cas ever had a physical sexual interest was Meg. So, that was always a continue fuel of megstiel hatred.

Oh why we're on it. The only reason people accused megstiel of sexual assault was because Meg possesed another body to kiss Cas. Yet destiel fans were fi e with it until season 10, when Cas confirmed Jimmy left his own body. But for those 6 year, destiel fans it wasn't an issue. Then suddenly it became one.. hmm why? It was something they could weaponized against megstiel.

Now let's speak of the destiel ship itself. Dean uses Castiel for his own goals. Yeah when Cas is useful, Dean is okay to him. But when Cas ain't useful, he's an asshole. Destiel fans like to use the hetronormtive card on megstie, but the opposite is true. If Cas was a woman, how much would destiel fans codemn the ship with all the verbal and physical abuse?

And yet it's a wonder to yall we don't romanticize it?

Also just a side note about wincest. I don't like incest. But you know which ship hasn't harassed me these years? Wincest.

Three most controversial opinions: Kara had every right to hide her superhero identity (yes even from Lena and tbh specially from her) and did nothing wrong in regards to that; people are entirely too hard on Kara in a complete disproportionate way to some other characters; I LOVE love love Dansen and even prefer it to Sanvers.

After thinking for a while I have realized what's truly bothering me about everybody promoting these other ships for Dean and Cas. It's not that they exist, it's when people say Mick is better for Cas than Dean and I don't want Cas to be happy if I disagree. Same with Meg, or Benny for Dean. I keep hearing "he'd treat him right!" even from destiel fans. I just feel like everyone is trying to downplay what Dean and Cas mean to each other since the finale and that is why I feel so alone lately.

I'm sorry to keep coming to your inbox with this but like I said you've always been such a happy place for me. Destiel's always been so important to me especially in the last couple of years for some very personal reasons. But these last few months I keep feeling like I'm the only one in the world who wants them to be happy together anymore. They're really canon now and everybody just keeps telling me I'm wrong for not shipping casmick or deanbenny or megstiel and now I'm literally crying again.

The thing is—and I addressed this a few times yesterday—I believe just because two people are endgame doesn't mean they can't be with other people in the meantime because maybe their time to be together hasn't come yet. We experience life and see things differently when we are with different people.

Yes, Destiel is canon.

However, it doesn't mean that through all the turmoil of 12 years of pining they weren't supposed to be with other people. I don't understand why it's an issue for them to be with other men while they have already been with other women? Like Dean had a whole ass family with Lisa. Cas was with Daphne for Jack knows how long. Like would it have been a better option to watch them moping around, pining, being miserable for 12 years and when they could finally be together they both die without actually being together? Honestly, I think that would have been a worse fate than they got in the end. At least them being with other people they got to experience life, love and sex with other people. I may not ship Dean with other people but I have no issue with it either because also through those relationships, they learned more about themselves. Did it suck that they didn't get their time to be together and experience their relationship before they died? Yes. But also please note that there's a reason why it never worked with anyone else. All those other people they were with never lasted long and they ultimately came back together.

On the issue of anyone was better for Cas than Dean. Dean is my freaking baby, okay? Please let no one talk about him like that. Did Dean have major issues? yes. Was he a jerk to Cas sometimes? yes but the same can be said for Cas, he has done various things that have hurt Dean as well to the point where Dean cried or drunk himself to almost death. That's life. That's human relationships for you. Well, yeah maybe Cas wasn't exactly human but he mostly was. And tell you what, of all the people in the multiverse, Cas chose this Dean to love. He followed him and loved him through everything. And so did Dean. Of all the angels, he chose Cas as his best friend —a freaking angel of the Lord, a killing machine, a soldier— and they watched old movies and he made Cas wear that absurd hat so they could play cowboys. He even chose to love Jack because to him, he was no longer Lucifer's spawn but Cas'. So c'mon Dean is love and Cas said it best in 15x18. Dean was a flawed human being like we all are, and Cas saw all that and he chose him. They chose each other even when Chuck was pulling the strings. Even when Naomi lobotomized Cas and made him re-live killing thousands of Deans, Cas still chose this Dean. Cas died—gave his fucking life, his essence —to save Dean so that Dean and Sam could save the world and defeat Chuck. So tell me, how is Dean not good enough for Cas or vice versa? They are perfect for each other because they weren't forced together, they chose each other and that's what spn was about, free will.

I honestly don't know what more to say because I feel like I've explained this the best that I can. I don't write meta or anything like that. This is merely based on my experience and observations as a fan of the show and the ultimate Dean girl who loves Cas to death (pun intended).

Ps. Stop listening to anyone who downplays their relationship. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but at the end of the day, just engage with content that makes you happy. The rest should just be background noise.

The biphobia in this fandom is also hilariously hypocritical of fans because they’ll fight to the death that Dean is bi but then Cas can’t be into women only dean or else he’s no longer queer . Like why is Cas being bi not an option but Dean being bi is the only option?

It's because it was never about representation. All their whining and crying has ALWAYS been about their ship and their ship alone. They swear up and down that Sam is just an ally, Sam has no queer-coding whatsoever, but then turn around and say that LIGHTING makes Dean queer? Eating a piece of cake instead of pie when the diner was out of pie signifies his BISEXUALITY? Walking through two saloon swing doors while everyone else just used the one means he SWINGS BOTH WAYS? As if pushing open two saloon doors wasn't on Dean's bucket list? Please.

Everything these people come up with to base their "Dean's bi" argument on is homophobic. Dean was straight the entire show. He didn't reciprocate Cas' feelings because he didn't feel the same. They only wanted Dean to be bisexual. They didn't care about Dean, they didn't care that the man literally said he wasn't into men, they didn't care that the WRITERS, and Jensen himself, said Dean was straight. They fetishize gay men, and that's all it was about.

They erased Cas' bisexuality (which didn't exist anyway because Cas has no gender), even though Cas' feelings were OPEN TO INTERPRETATION. Cas has said I love you to them before, very similarly to his I love you in Despair, so most of us (including friends of mine that are general viewers, who don't participate in fandom) read Cas' confession as FAMILIAL.

Supernatural was never about romance. It's always been about Sam and Dean, sacrifice, and platonic love. There was no underlying romantic agenda, there was no queerbaiting. Just straight dudes who had trouble expressing their feelings sometimes.

Dean wasn't bi, Dean didn't love Cas. The harmful stereotypes hellers use for Dean's "bisexuality" are homophobic in their own right. I wish these people would fucking realize that before they hurt anyone else with their queerbaiting bullshit to new fans.

Megstiel wasn't "heteronormative" or homophobic. It didn't "erase Cas' queerness" because Megstiel was queer. A bisexual man in a relationship with a woman is still a bisexual man. Nothing was erased, and besides, there was no relationship between Dean and Cas to erase anyway, seeing as Dean did not reciprocate. The ship was unrequited AT BEST, and that's IF you chose to read it as romantic. The majority? General viewers? Saw that confession as platonic.

Technically, four fandoms if you count the one odd Megstiel SPN fic that I wrote in reaction to S08E17. But on AO3, my main fandoms are Shadowhunters with 85 fics, The Untamed (陈情令)/MDZS with 24 fics, and Word of Honour (山河令) with 3 fics.

Yup, I do! I set a rule for myself that I could only post something new after I’d answered all the comments in my inbox (so if I start replying to comments, it usually means I’m ready to post my next chapter haha). But I do like making friends with my readers and I love it when I spot a familiar username!

6. What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?

I’ve written a few fics that have made people cry 🙈 But I usually like happy endings so I think the angstiest endings go to The Lighthouse on Lightwood Island (Shadowhunters), which is a horror/eldritch tentacle monster ficlet that started out as crackfic and just took a sharp left turn into angst, and The Kingdom by the Sounding Sea (Shadowhunters) which is a everybody-dies sort of deal.

7. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've ever written?

I don’t write crossovers but I have written one SPN-verse AU and one Star Trek-verse AU for Shadowhunters.

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Not really. I did get one of those crazy Jiang Cheng haters on one fic, but it was just one nonsensical comment and I simply deleted it.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yeah, at least half of my fic is rated E. Porn with feelings is my jam, and I feel like I should tag most of it “what is all this plot getting in the way of my porn?!” because I’m apparently incapable of writing porn without plot LOL.

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Yes, someone on Wattpad stole a bunch of fic from a few authors but we reported the account.

11. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No. I did do a lovely collaboration series with rebel_ren on AO3 called Sensorium where we prompted each other with one of the senses and gifted the fics to each other, and the MDZS Reverse Bang with @lordvoldemortsnipple ❤️

12. What's your all time favourite ship?

I don’t think I have one. I’m currently in Wenzhou (Word of Honour) mode but I’m still writing MDZS fic and I occasionally read fics from my previous fandoms like Shadowhunters, Supernatural, Sherlock, etc.

13. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Ranma Nibunnoichi 😆 There wasn’t even FFN at that time, I posted fic on my geocities site and there were all these fandom webrings...

14. What's your favourite fic you've written?

Oh no this is a hard one. I am proud of most of my fic – I like to challenge myself with new tropes or techniques, and I enjoy writing and researching for them. If I had to choose, I’d pick three. All Realms of Where and When Beyond because it was my life for six months and I will always love the world and lore that I built for it. Lost & Found // 有缘千里来相会 (The Untamed/MDZS) because it was an exploration of the complicated concepts of belonging and family in the framework of my culture and my identity as Chinese diaspora. And our love is a harsh chord (Shadowhunters) because it was the most structurally complex thing I’ve written because of the non-linear narrative and the fandom was so lovely and supportive with a bunch of people livetweeting their reactions when they were reading the fic.

Hello! I found your blog via you amazingly summarizing all that's going on with the spn drama. Due to my schedules, rl stuff, some of the arcs that didn't vibe with me, my availability to find a place to watch...the rollercoaster I was used to with this fandom was more me binging it in a weekend to going months to over a year without watching it. I still haven't watched the last season(but with a fandom this big it's pretty impossible not be spoiled so I more or less know what happened) BUT oh great one I ask of thee for more information if you have it...other than being busy and whatnot, I'm not really one to keep up with the actors as well. So could you also maybe do a summary of all the stans? I'im seeing terms I haven't seen before. Who is Kelios(sp?)? Hellions?? probably messed it up but like...I guess what are the name of each legion? Who do they have alliance towards? What was their desires? Que paso?!?!?!?

Hi there! 'Some of the arcs that didn't vibe with me' me emotionally quitting Supernatural in Season 7 after they killed Castiel 😂 Anyway I totally get it, I went through the same culture shock mid-last year when I got back into SPN and tried to find where fandom was at! There's really a LOT of lore and content after 15 years though so I'll just do the broad brushstrokes based on my impressions and personal stereotypes PLEASE remember this is oversimplifying groups and individuals to tendencies and I'm very biased! Also important that there are sub-factions within sub-factions - again, I'm simplifying here!

I've also linked to the 'Super-wiki' in terms of some definitions because the Super-wiki has pages for them where the Fandom-wiki does not. Great introduction actually - only in the Supernatural fandom. There are two Supernatural wikis. One, through curation and twitter activity, supports BiBro/Wincest factions and does not support Destiel users. One is more neutral or Destiel-friendly (I don't know that the Fandom wiki has a personality/social media presence per se). You cannot make this up. There is a factional war... within use of fandom wikis.

Destiel faction

People who primarily ship Dean/Cas, love Castiel and (often, although not always) Jack, and the 'found family' of Supernatural as well as the brothers, and like the post s3 seasons too. Hated 15.19 and 15.20 for killing Dean and ignoring the other characters/narrative arc of the show. Nicknamed 'Destihellers' by the Wincest faction as a derogatory term, 'reclaimed' and shortened as 'Hellers', a nickname they use affectionately to describe each other. See more info on nicknames here.

Sometimes also ship ‘Cockles’ (the ship between Misha Collins and Jensen Ackles) although generally speaking they're more respectful of the wives of the actors than J2 shippers, who are notoriously responsible for... a vast series of insane-fan misdemeanours. Historically most were also good at keeping RPF to themselves and not harassing celebrities with it directly, although recently, particularly with younger twitter fans, that has not been the case.

Sub-factions:

The ‘Desticule’ or ‘Destiel tumblr’ - general grouping of Destiel-shipping tumblr users around 20-30 years old, usually LGBT+, most who came back to the show post-15.18 after leaving it for various reasons including getting sick of the queerbaiting. Funniest bitches alive etc. and responsible for the best text posts you’ve ever seen. Can also start stupid discourse and in-group drama when they’re bored.

'POLOL' - People of Lots of Letters, a discord group (of tumblr and twitter users) that ran on the assumption Andrew Dabb was playing a hugely intricate game of 3D chess to do with gnostic symbolism among other things, and would make Destiel canon. Have since had their own factional sub-wars and fallen apart a bit. Some of their meta was and is good and interesting! Some of it was wildly off the mark. Now generally insist that Dabb/the writers were all pushing for Destiel canon and the network is entirely to blame.

Twitter fans (TikTok edition) - younger fans around 18 and younger who (FOR REASONS BEYOND ME) started watching the show around 2018-2020. Definition of 'stans'. Tend to be very loud and aggressive on twitter when Events Happen, which like. I do get, because they've grown up in a completely different media environment and this kind of Dinosaur Politicking around LGBT+ issues is beyond them. Fancam central. Anyway stream #CASTIEL for clear skin!

Twitter fans (AO3 edition) - older fans around 30+ who kept going with the show but either don't have a large tumblr presence or just prefer twitter. A lot of fic writers, GISH-ers, and BNFs in this group. Some of them are very cool and reasonable in their opinions, some of them act like the younger stans. Some of them too accepting of what happened wrt 15.19-20 in my opinion, because, in contrast to the younger twitter stans, they grew up expecting Destiel to NEVER be canon or respected. 'Can't believe we got this far' etc.

Multiship faction

Multishippers or shippers of things not as large as the two main behemoths . Sub-factions based on shipping, e.g. Megstiel and Sastiel. I don't think these groups are very large though, and seem to have very little influence in the Discourse.

Wincest faction

LARGE overlap with the 'BiBro' faction and their opinions, which I'll get to. Ship Sam and Dean romantically. Often pretend to be BiBros on places like twitter and reddit in order for outside groups to take their opinions more seriously. 'Wincesties' etc. are derogatory nicknames given by the Destiel faction.

Sub-factions:

Multiship fans - ship Sam and Dean but respect Castiel/the 'found family'. Politically overlap with the faction of multishippers, I think. I don't have a lot of insight on this group of people honestly, but I know they exist.

Bronlies - the typical BiBro and 'Wincest' shippers most people think of, twitter user 'Kelios' is one of the would-be ringleaders of this faction - typically tend to be older white midwestern women. Historically have been pretty nasty on twitter (leading to Robert Berens, writer who made Destiel canon, occasionally subtweeting Kelios). Also tend to ship 'J2' - and take it very seriously as a legitimate thing that is really real. This is called 'tinhatting'.

BiBro faction

People who think the show should JUST be about the brothers, love Supernatural s1-3 and everything after it should have been just like Supernatural s1-3. Hate Castiel, Jack, and the 'found family'. Largely loved 15.20. Go to literally any comments section on any Supernatural article and You Will Find Them complaining about how the show should just be about the Brothers. Tend to be older, straighter, and more conservative/Republican (and male) fans. (I am aware that the definition of 'BiBro' used to refer to people who just liked the brothers but there's no definitional difference now in the discourse.) The Wincest and BiBro faction are generally much more wealthy than the Destiel faction (they being younger and more diverse/queer/left-leaning in general) and would be the biggest revenue generators at conventions etc.

Sub-factions:

Reddit bros - literally anyone who visits r/supernatural. Well, that's not fair - there are people who post reasonable opinions on there, but it's pretty rare and they get downvoted a lot. Like to talk about 'toxic Destiel fans' 'ruining the show' and how Dean is a straight man who is straight and could never possibly be gay. Might even think the confession was platonic despite all evidence to the contrary. I'm Not Homophobic I Have Gay Friends, But No Gays on MY Show!

Old Guard - group of older fans who overlap strongly with the Wincest faction, but might not necessarily ship Wincest.

GA faction

'General Audience' - These are the group of audience members that aren't 'online' so to speak; most watch the show on TV as a Casual Viewing Experience (are therefore also sometimes referred to as 'casuals'. Mostly their opinions tend towards BiBros, but they have a vast range of baffling views thanks to being Not Online and usually Not caring about Supernatural that much or thinking that deeply about it.

Sub-factions:

People who simply watch Supernatural on TV and then don't think about it very much after that.

I said they weren't 'online' but that's not entirely true; I'd probably classify people on Supernatural Facebook Groups as GA, along with friends of friends who post statuses about how 15.20 was a neat finale that wrapped up the series.

Conclusion

Supernatural is famously the show that appeals to both Republicans and Democrats, literally All Orientations, so there's a WIDE range of factions. However, most warring online boils down to Destiel vs. Wincest/BiBro - the war that started in Season 4 and has simply never ended. In terms of the 'actors' and their stans, in general, Wincest/BiBro fans love Jared, like Jensen, and dislike Misha. Destiel fans love Misha, like Jensen, and dislike Jared. Of course as with everything, there are variations and this is just a generalisation. But that's the summary of it, from my perspective!

This didn't even get into Sam girls, Dean girls and Cas girls. God. Anyway.

it’s okay to ship people

i was just coming onto tumblr to check out my dash...

my god everyone hates everyone on this site. i don’t understand it. why cant we all just accept that we’re not going to like what everyone else has to say? i ship several ships that clash together but i don’t feel the need to type an entire essay on why one of them is completely stupid and the other is valid. it’s not true. no ship is more valid than another. the ship doesn’t belong to you. it doesn’t belong to me either, or even the creators of the show/book/movies.

if you ship destiel, you’re awesome okay? you’re doing great and for everything that supernatural has put you through, you’re still surviving. barely, perhaps, but you’re surviving. you’re allowed to ship them.

if you ship wincest, you’re also awesome. that ending was brutal and wholesome and if you’re taking it as wincest subtext then go right ahead. you are allowed to do that. you don’t need other people’s validation to ship people.

if you ship sabriel or saileen then you’re just as awesome as everyone else! sam deserves love and so does eileen and gabriel and you are allowed to ship them.

if you ship megstiel, you’re awesome too. meg really turned around in the end and there’s no denying that she loved cas, and if misha says that cas loved her too? yeah. you’re allowed to ship them. you’re allowed to feel happy after him saying that. 

i know im not really anyone on this site yet and i probably wont ever be, but I just want to say that no matter what hate is happening on here, or in the world, you’re allowed to ship who you want to ship. 

it’s okay. really. 

you’re allowed. the ships don’t belong to anyone and that means that you’re allowed to interpret everything how you want to interpret it. if someone posts something that makes you feel bad about shipping people, or ashamed, just know that it’s okay. people get to have their opinions but that means that you get to have an opinion too. 

you are awesome for shipping people, okay? it doesn’t matter what ship it is, you’re awesome and you’re allowed to do that. 

and if everyone else is hating on you for shipping whatever ship you do, i don’t. 

i don’t hate you for shipping people and if you need anything--a pick me up, a reminder that it’s okay and you’re allowed to exist and take up space and be, then you can message me okay?

Supernatural: Unpopular Opinions

This is mostly a stream of consciousness cause I’ve seen a lot of strong opinions and some I agree with and some I disagree with. I don’t know if anyone will agree with any of these opinions, but I just wanted to get them out there in case anyone does. If you disagree, that’s totally fine! I mean no disrespect to anyone who sees things differently :)

1. Both Bisexual Dean and Straight Dean are valid interpretations of the text. Believing that Dean is straight does not automatically make you homophobic. Believing that Dean is bisexual doesn’t make you delusional. Personally? I think he’s bisexual. Either way, jumping onto anyone’s post with the sole purpose of invalidating their reading of the text or name-calling is rude.

2. My own personal headcanon? I think Jensen Ackles take on the character is genuinely that Dean’s feelings for Castiel are “open to interpretation”. My belief is that even Dean doesn’t even know the nature of his own feelings in regards to Castiel. It’s not something he’s ever really looked at too closely, you know? I think the confession probably shook him, but he figures it doesn’t matter now anyway. Regardless of the nature of his feelings for Castiel, I still think he would have immediately looked for Cas in heaven. He’s still his best friend. 

3. John Winchester is one of my favorite characters. Top five, definitely. However, I believe that “Lebanon” and “Carry On” gave him far too much credit. John is far from perfect. But he’s not a monster either. It’s his complexity and nuance that makes him so interesting. On the one hand, he’s a terrible father. He treats his sons like soldiers, does a number on both their psyches, and can be very narrow-minded. On the other hand, he only ever did what he thought was best for his sons, he was a “righteous man” and a hero, and he was working through a lot of trauma himself. He’s very flawed, but he’s not actively malicious. He loves his sons, but he makes a lot of mistakes. He’s a complicated character and I both love and hate him simultaneously. That’s what makes him such a good character. 

4. Carver Era is my least favorite Era. I don’t hate it and there are a lot of great episodes in that time. But this was the Era where I almost quit the show and got so bored that I had to force myself through the episodes. It wasn’t until they brought back Lucifer that I started getting excited again and it wasn’t until “Don’t Call Me Shurley” that I actually started enjoying the show again. 

5. Chuck Shurley is another one of my top five characters (the other three being Dean, Castiel, and Gabriel). I love dorky prophet Chuck, I love absent father Chuck, and I love evil maniacal Chuck. The writing is inconsistent, but they’re all so compelling to watch and interesting for different reasons. Honestly, I just think Rob Benedict is a really great actor and deserves major props for playing three separate characters for the price of one. I still think it’s a shame that they weren’t able to pull off a wrathful antagonistic (but not fully evil) Chuck. I love the meta of the character’s defeating the writer, but how cool would a disappointed and tired Chuck finally losing his patience with humanity and going all Noah’s Arc/Sodom and Gomorrah on Earth have been???

6. I believe Sam’s ending is just as tragic as Castiel and Dean’s. Castiel was never told he was loved and Dean never got to live his life. But the ending I cried the most about was Sam’s. Sam had to watch as all of his hunting friends and surrogate family disappeared before his eyes. He lost Eileen again. We have no idea whether he ever reunited with any of them or not. He lost his best friend and wasn’t even there to say goodbye to him. His son flew the coop. Not too long after, he lost his brother. Sam lost everyone he loved. Sam then spends the next forty years mourning all those who he’s lost and tries to live the life he thinks they’d want for him so that their sacrifices were worth it. It’s just so...depressing.

7. I ship Destiel, Saileen, Dean/Jo, Megstiel, and Sabriel. I feel like these ships can all coexist since they all existed at different times in the story. They don’t have to be in competition with each other. They all had potential and they all ended tragically. 

8. Rufus was the best part of the finale. The fact that the only characters (outside of Sam and Dean) who were mentioned were Bobby, Castiel, Jack, John, Mary, Donna, and Rufus is so funny to me. I mean, I know why, but still. There are so many unanswered questions and emotional arcs left unresolved, but at least we know Rufus is in Dean and Sam’s heaven. Also my favorite headcanon from the DeanCas wedding is that Rufus taught them the Hora and that they did the chair lift because I imagine Dean would hate every second of it and Castiel would spend the whole time trying to calm him down and assuring him that he won’t fall off the chair. 

9. None of the main actors deserve any hate. They’ve all said and done stupid things, but they all seem like overall good people. They’re all friends with each other. Trying to compare their friendships, put certain actors on pedestals, and demonize other actors is just....pointless and immature. We don’t know these people.

10. Canon ends when Chuck is defeated and the author is rendered powerless. Anything after the beach scene is subjective and you can choose your own ending. Does Jack become the new God? Does Dean die on a hunt a few weeks later? Five years later? Does Dean save Cas from the empty? Does Sam marry Eileen? Do Dean and Cas reunite in heaven? Does Sam start a hunting network? Does Sam quit hunting? Does his son get into the hunting life or does he have a normal life? Is the purgatory and empty situation resolved? It’s all up to your interpretation.

How you feeling today after the Misha Megstiel video? I’m personally really glad he made one

Honestly, kinda shocked at the fallout and massive fandom upheaval it’s caused. The video was from my wonderful fellow shipper @xtexboyx to the equally lovely @inkbleeder with a little in-joke about owls. It was short, sweet and he looked so good and animated doing it and I really enjoyed it too.  Anyway, TW for abuse/suicide/bullying However, that said it has also revealed a lot of hypocrisy within the fandom and a lot of people saw it as an attack when it was literally a gift between friends that they wanted to share with other Megstiel shippers until h*llers got a hold of it and it blew up over socials. Hold on cos this is gonna be long and get kinda wild. It also worries me that a lot of younger fans are seemingly threatened by a difference of opinion over fictional characters and ships. It also again uncovered deeply held misogyny within the fandom where Meg cannot be forgiven despite her redemption arc, where as MoC Dean is forgiven and thought of as ‘hot’ for doing similar things.  I made a plea on twitter that I’m going to repeat here as someone studying psychology, it’s something that has disturbed me - and in all honesty when I was their age in a different fandom had been there myself and thankfully due to lack of socials realised how dangerous/toxic obsessions can be.  So my plea: The fans pressed over Misha's cameo to the Megstiel shippers & my friends: please seek help. Please don't let fiction get to you this much if it's affecting your mental health please speak to someone. I mean this sincerely. I've been there & It's not healthy & will only get worse.  It's nothing to be ashamed about - it's a form of hyperfixation and will end up making you really ill, depressed and removed from friends and family - which makes you easy to take advantage of. I am being honest - like seriously... it's hurting you without you realising. You need to learn to differentiate between fact and fiction - you need to learn that people in the world are going to have a difference of opinion - which in the long run if it’s fictional is harmless despite how it feels to you. These are actors playing a part, speaking the lines of other writers - there is no hidden subtext, the characters exist in a space that is there to be interpreted by the fans of the show - it’s not a major life changing discourse. You see yourself in a character? That’s great. But to deny others their right to relate to a character just makes you a gatekeeper and that’s not cool. That is how misogyny starts, how segregation starts and in the wider scheme of things, in the real world is how you become manipulated and conned by political and religious leaders and how ‘othering’ starts to happen.   When you start letting reality and fiction blend and get so hurt that there are threats to doxx, suicide bating, bullying, stalking and threats to kill, it’s then you have to take a step back and realise that this is consuming your life - that perhaps you need to maybe seek professional help. I mean I get it - when you’re young you think you know everything and you’ll fight to hold on and ‘prove’ others wrong... and yeah I know people are gonna think “Ugh, an adult has no right to tell me what to do” but this adult is only 34 - and has BEEN through an obsession with a ship (Farscape - John/Aeryn which was canon but still). Throw in the wonderful world of social media and you get adults preying on these vulnerable youngsters - siding with them, befriending them and gaining their trust which is where the issue lies and they could quite well end up being the victim.  There is also another element of the threats I’ve seen (again going back to the doxxing and suicide bating). They may think it’s a ‘joke’ and nobody will see it, but these are actually criminal acts in some countries - police could literally rock up at their door, give them a talking to, fine them or worse. It’s never a joke to doxx/suicide bate/harass etc.  I think the root of the issue is the attachment to characters and self-insertion and the false accusation that they’re doing it for ‘representation’ when there are other shows and other characters that will give you true LGBTQ+ rep rather than projecting onto two good-looking cis-het white males. By believing wholeheartedly that lighting/clothing/food and eye contact is ‘proof’ or rep of a ship is completely damaging and also stereotyping - it pushes the narrative that guys cannot have a platonic emotional bond with another guy because it’s “gay” which also perpetuates toxic masculinity and misogyny.  But this quote on my twitter feed caught my eye, and I’m starting to agree “I used to be concerned too, till I realised its already too late. They always have the option to come back to reality but always choose delusion instead. You can't save someone who doesn't want to be saved. They're beyond help, and its a choice. I can't feel bad about it anymore”   Anyway, sorry for the long tangent - I loved the video, I loved that Megstiel got some love but I am sad for my friends that ordered/received this gift that parts of fandom have blown it way out of proportion. I’m happy it’s given others some happiness.

3. Current Favourite Ship: I haven’t been active in fandom here lately so I’m not really in the headspace for be shipping anything atm, but the last ships I remember obsessing over before I took my tumblr hiatus were Lokius (Loki/Mobius) and Calthazar (Castiel/Balthazar).

4. Your ship since the first minute: Dashingfrost (Fandral/Loki.) Always knew there was something gay going on between those two. Also frostmaster (grandmaster/Loki) and Lokius. I was shipping those before the show/movie even came out. And I was on the megstiel (Meg/Castiel) train from the first time I saw that tense holy fire situation.

5. Ships you wish had been endgame: Lokius. Hate me if you want but they did have incredible chemistry, and it felt like they could’ve been leading to something. I’m fine with them being friends though, so.. yeah. Uhm…. I deluded myself into believing Loki might go back for the cute flight attendant at the end of the series so I guess Loki/Florence (the cute flight attendant). And it would’ve been super nice if Mary hadn’t died and she and John had gotten to live happily ever after, so Warstan. Also Megstiel cause Cas and Meg deserved to be happy together.

6. Ship you wish was canon: That’s a tough one because most of my ships are so far-fetched they only work in fanfiction. I think Nebuloki (Nebula/Loki) would’ve been very cute. Hanstiel (Hannah/Castiel) had huge potential to play around with gender presentation and vessel changing, plus they were adorable together. Calthazar because Castiel and Balthazar are soulmates if I’ve ever seen them. And I wish they’d confirmed somewhere that Sherlock had some experience with males in his past, just to solidify his non-heterosexuality (so Sherlock/OMC). Also they should’ve confirmed that he and Janine really did like each other (so Janlock).

7. Ship that most of the fandom hates but you love: Adlock all the way. Also Janlock. But you know people only hate these ships because it gets in the way of their gay otp :/. Same goes for Warstan. And that could also apply to Hanstiel. Plus I love Sastiel (Sam/Castiel) and most of the fandom doesn’t like that, so yeah.

8. You don’t even watch the show but you ship it: Aziraphale/Crowley. I don’t even know how tf to spell that lmao but it only takes one glance at a still image to tell that they’re made for each other.

9. Ship you wish had a different storyline: Ummm… Steggy (Steve/Peggy) I guess? I thought they were really cute in the first cap movie, but having him go back in time to be with her in Endgame was just.. stupid. Like she already had her own family and a husband and he probably threw off the timeline by doing that and it was just a cop-out to get rid of his character and, just- ugh. I hated it. She should have just stayed in his past. He had already moved on from her (more or less) so bringing her back in at the last second was just annoying. I could also say megstiel for this one cause they killed Meg off way too early.

10. Favourite ship that’s endgame: Adlock or Pepperony (Pepper/Tony). Even though neither of these ships were technically together in the end per se, they were still together, you know? Both of them are just made for each other. I love that Pepper and Tony got to have a family for a little while, and I love that Sherlock and Irene didn’t end up being a typical cookie cutter relationship. Cause that wouldn’t have fit them. I think the long distance clandestine “meetings in High Wycombe” route was perfect for them.

11. Ship you initially didn’t think you would get into: I hated most of my ships in the beginning lol. Like I said, I was a hardcore johnlocker in the very begging so naturally I hated Irene. I wanted Castiel to be asexual really bad so I initially didn’t like Meg either. And most of my marvel ships are products of prolonged exposure lmao.

12. Ship you lost interest in: Johnlock. Originally when I first watched the show, I thought it was so obvious that they were in love and it was a total ripoff that it wasn’t made canon, but over time I started to realise how unhealthy and problematic and unnecessary that whole ship was, and how they’re genuinely only interested in each other as friends, so I’m not into it anymore.
