Lake Macdonnell is South Australia’ s best known pink lake and features in all the tourist literature; there are some spectacular photos of the lake on the internet.
Sadly when we visited it today there wasn’t much water and it was barely pink, disappointing, I am sure at least some of the many travellers who made the effort to get here. ( it’s really quite remote !)
Still, as salt lakes tend to, it still offered up to the visitor some truly extraordinary colours and textures. I think the winter months are when the lake is at is most Instagrammable.
We spent the rest of the day checking out the towns that lie between Penong- the windmill town-and Port Kenny- including Ceduna, Smokey Bay, Haslams Beach, as well as the Westal Loop near Streaky Bay, coming to the conclusion that while Ceduna has a nice bay and jetty, it is still overall an unattractive town , while in contrast Smokey Bay is very very pretty and the pick of these towns that line the Eastern Great Australian Bight.
The rock formations known as Murphy’s Haystacks- listed on the South Australian Heritage Register can be found about 20 kms from Port Kenny; like Lake Macdonell these feature heavily in the tourist promotional material, and are actually quite impressive, and we thought, well worth inspection, especially in the late afternoon light.

Foodpanda Partner-Vendors Highlight Growth and Success Amidst the Pandemic
Four restaurants that started on foodpanda in 2020 shared stories of their significant growth since signing up as vendors on the platform. Sweettea, a milk tea shop founded by Charlene Francisco Sy and her husband in 2019, has expanded from 1 to 18 stores in a span of 2 years, thanks in part to its success in foodpanda. “We are one of the few stores that are open at that time and we are overwhelmed with orders from foodpanda. They helped us grow the business in such a short period of time," says Charlene, who juggles her roles as business owner and IT consultant. Apart from the visibility, she also likes that the foodpanda merchant app helps her see crucial data that enables her to decide and to properly manage her business. The brand is also supportive in executing her marketing strategies, she says. She plans to grow together with foodpanda and have a “Sweettea in every city”.
Bigg’s Diner was founded by Carlo Beunflor’s mother and partners in 1983 in Bicol to answer the need of their kababayans for Western food. Armed with a strong vision, despite personal setbacks, the partners took out a bank loan to get started, and here they are now. 38 years later, Carlo leads the company’s tenured employees while training staff to “support them” and “give them all the resources” needed in achieving their goals. After signing with foodpanda in 2020, Carlo felt the brand was able to address issues and challenges they’ve been facing as a company in a “swift” and “outright” manner. “Our partnership with foodpanda augmented our sales significantly during the pandemic,” says Carlo. “Eventually, we would like to have a significant presence in bigger cities such as Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao but our brand strongly appeals to smaller provincial key cities as well. We would like to forge a strong partnership with foodpanda in every market we find ourselves in.”
Ribshack, which started at a food court in Downtown Bacolod City in 2012, had to work hard for a stable space for 3 years. But now they’re present in kiosks, weekend festivals, and malls. Ribshack joined foodpanda in 2020 and currently has 17 branches open on the app. “Due to the dining restrictions during the pandemic, foodpandahas helped maintain our presence, especially for the customers who cannot go out or dine in,” says Adrian C. Alagao, Ribshack’s Head of Operations. “By tapping into the customer base of foodpanda, we can readily expand to those customers who might haveotherwise not seen or visited our restaurant,” Alagao adds. For future plans, Adrian hopes to “expand to more areas here in the Philippines.” This also includes continuing the company’s food-delivery partnership with foodpanda to reach more locations.
Penong’s Barbecue Seafood & Grills is a homegrown restaurant chain in Davao City that was founded in 2004. Chad Robert Boniface Regis, the brand’s Chief Executive Officer, says his passion for cooking was the reason he had always been “fascinated” by the restaurant business. He finally pursued the idea when he had a family of hisown. “The first 3 months was a huge struggle. I would get up early every day to open the store and come home latefrom work just to attain an established brand name and a good foundation for my product and business,” Regissays. The hard work paid off though. Penong’s now has 40 branches, including those in SM Butuan, SM General Santos City, and Quezon City. After partnering with foodpanda in 2020, the brand increased its presence to 27 storesonline. “Foodpanda helps us establish an online presence through frequently advertising our products on its platform, connecting us with large customer audiences, and driving more delivery sales,” Regis shares. His advice to aspiring restaurant owners? “Find your passion and make a living out of it.”

The Far West Coast of South Australia stretches from the western side of the Eyre Peninsula across the Nullarbor Plain to the border with Western Australia. This expansive coastline is known for its incredibly remote and rugged landscapes, small rural towns and pristine ocean waters brimming with wildlife.
Ceduna is the major town on the edge of the Far West Coast and is the gateway for exploring this incredibly remote yet spectacular coastal region of South Australia. This article will cover everything that you need to know about the Far West Coast.

Repost-A Whale of a time at Head Of Bight
We have driven to the edge of the Nullarbor, to Penong, from where we could drive another 2 hours to the head of The Great Australian Bight (called Head of Bight) so that we could be here, for once, at peak whale season. The Great Southern Right Whales migrate here every year, between May and […] A Whale of a time at Head Of Bight

I drove from Melbourne to Perth and lived to tell the tale
Big tick off the bucket list. I’ve always wanted to do a big road trip and Melbourne to Perth is an easy (but long) straight run. And what a trip it was!
Our itinerary:
Melbourne – Adelaide – Kangaroo Island – Port Augusta – Ceduna – Border Village – Balladonia – Norseman – Kalgoorlie – Perth – Margaret River – Albany – Esperance – Caiguna – Penong – Port Augusta – Broken Hill – Melbourne. We wanted to avoid any hectic long days of driving for 8+ hours but in hindsight, we made too many stops. Everything between Ceduna and Norseman is just a roadhouse and with the exception of the Great Australian Bight, there's very little to see.
Things that happened:
We experienced just how vast this country is. Esperance is the most beautiful place I have ever seen and should be a massive tourist destination, but its inaccessibility makes this impossible. It is a seven hour drive from Perth, or you can take one of the three weekly (and expensive) flights from Perth which isn't ideal if you're coming from east.
We learned not to drive west after 4pm when there is literally nothing between you and the sun, it hurts.
Huddling by the side of the highway at the Caiguna Roadhouse in the dead quiet of the middle of the night, desperately trying to get some internet connection on our phones to check the socials only to scream and collapse in giggles when we heard a dog bark.
I got a speeding ticket on the Nullarbor. Who knew you could get a speeding ticket on the Nullarbor?
Excluding families and a couple of truckies, we were the youngest people by at least 30 years on the road. Locals, truckies and grey nomads were delighted to meet a young couple from Melbourne doing the trip and we shared some memorable moments of roadhouse banter.
I saw a mine for the first time and finally understood what a mine looks like and does.
On a serious note, seeing how people live outside of the big cities forced me to reflect a bit on the state of affairs in this country, and it really opened my eyes to why rural areas tend to swing conservative. Diversity is scarce out there, and archaic beliefs are not. Opportunities for education and exposure are limited. People struggle to understand what they are not familiar with, and while this obviously does not excuse prejudice and bigotry, it helped me realise that it will be impossible to attain social justice without patience and compassion to dismantle generations of conditioning.
