Newly-Created Illinois HIV Crimes Spark Protest
Activists Denounce Governor as 'Closet Case'
Springfield, Illinois [October 1, 1989] — Governor James Thompson Sept 11 [1989] signed a bill making it a possible crime for an HIV-positive person to kiss someone who doesn't know of the individual's positive status. The governor also repealed a one-of-a-kind state law requiring those seeking marriage licenses to take an HIV antibody test.
[...]
Since the law took effect on Jan. 1, 1988, 250,000 pre-marital HIV tests in Illinois turned up 52 antibody-positive individuals. Marriage license applications in counties bordering Wisconsin and Indiana, meanwhile, dropped as much as 21 per cent as lovers crossed state lines to avoid the "AIDS test" and the $20 to $150 lab fees.
While Thompson was applauded by AIDS, gay, civil rights and public health activists for repealing the marriage testing law, he was denounced for signing a measure making it a felony, punishable by up to seven years in prison, to "expose...the body of one person to the bodily fluid of another person in a manner that could result in the transmission of HIV."
And for the second September in a row, members of ACT UP/Chicago staged a rowdy march up Halsted Street in Chicago's gay neighborhood to Thompson's mansion Sept. 15, protesting his signature on legislation they called dangerous.
Before the evening was over, protesters had called Thompson a closet homosexual and burned the state flag of Illinois.
No Transmission Required
Last year Thompson signed a bill allowing doctors to test for HIV without patients' knowledge. This year it was a bill that makes it a felony for persons with HIV antibodies to share their body fluids with others without first announcing their HIV status. Violators could spend up to seven years in prison.
This year's bill, authored by arch-conservative state Rep. Penny Pullen (R-Park Ridge), does not require that transmission occur for a crime to be committed. It does, however, exclude the antibody-positive person from prosecution if the other individual "knew that the infected person was infected with HIV, knew that the action could result in infection with HIV, and consented to the action with that knowledge."
Pullen has said previously that government studies back up her position that open-mouth kissing falls within the law's parameters, even though the government has yet to record an actual instance of HIV transmission via kissing.
AIDS activists are calling the new law "outrageously vague," and point out that violation seems contingent — among other things — on the precise epidemiological knowledge of the person allegedly put at risk.

Where Is Home?
We talk about retirement a lot.  A LOT.  The mister wants out of the south because he hates the hot, sticky weather.  I want out of the south for a variety of different reasons.  He tears up when he thinks about leaving this house.  I get excited thinking of a house with better storage, maybe even a walk-in closet and a big pantry.  He loves the idea of townhouse living and all of the freedom it provides.  I love the idea of half a football field between me and a neighbor.  I wouldn’t mind being snug against a neighbor if we were in a walkable little town and I could have a white picket fence.  As we age into our golden years I want to be on city water and city sewer.  I do not want to be ninety when the well runs dry or the septic system has a fit.  Nope. No, thank you.  We have discussed towns from Maine to Arizona and are constantly trading articles about property taxes and real estate markets.  Night after night I search Zillow, Realtor, Trulia (oh, those handy dandy crime maps!) and so on.  I’ll send Mickey a house in Maryland to admire and mention that it’s just two hours from the world’s cutest grandgirl.  He responds that he loves it.  Then I send him a townhouse near Tucson and he says the same thing.  I’m getting nowhere with this guy. Side note: Yes, I know Arizona gets very hot, but it is not humid. HUGE difference. Also, Arizona has two enormous positives - we could escape allergies and my hair would behave.   If you had my hair you’d know that’s more important than the property taxes.  Two major negatives would be that it’s too far from family and I can’t imagine never experiencing another autumn. I’m happily willing to give the townhouse idea serious consideration.   I know that Mickey would love to never weed eat and edge another yard.  Remember the good old days when no one did that?  My main issue with townhouses is that they all tend to be multiple stories - sometimes three floors.  Wherever we retire, that’s where we’re going to die.  I don’t want to be unable to navigate my own home when I’m old.  Same reason I refuse to have a basement laundry, I don’t want to drag baskets of clothes up and down basement stairs when I’m a little old lady.  You know damn well a cat would trip me and Mickey wouldn’t miss me until he got hungry.  Of all the chores I’d be willing to expire while doing, laundry is not in the top three. We’re not lottery winners so our options are limited.  When we sell this house we’ll make a tasty profit that will allow us to find a comfortable home - nothing fancy, but we won’t be in a box under bridge.  I can make any home pretty, but the bones have to be good.  I’m more concerned with structure and mechanics.  Who needs a beautiful house with a bad roof or an hvac system on its last leg?   The region definitely determines what you get for your money.  For the same price you can have this sort of square footage in the south (complete with inground pool)...
Tumblr media
or you can opt for proximity to Portland, Maine and get this.
Tumblr media
The second house is new construction, but it’s itty bitty, has well water and septic, and is missing the all-important garage that we’d need up north.  This is a struggle, people.  We just want a nice little house in a nice little town, hopefully one that will meet our needs as we get older. Other items on our wish list?  Small town living with easy access to a larger city and a decent international airport.  Part of my hunt includes exploring each town’s library website (a vibrant, busy library says a lot about a place) as well as their Facebook page.  Looking past the mouthy keyboard warriors that lurk on every page, you can still get a good idea of the town’s vibe.  Let’s see - fair property taxes, decent cost of living, small town feel, good airport, seasons...sounds like we should stay put and just endure long, sticky summers, right?  Ugh, no.  Our reasons for wanting to relocate are so much more than just the summers.  Soooo, months and months of searching keep leading me to one state that ticks all of our boxes and then some.  Minnesota.  A myriad of cute towns surround Minneapolis and St. Paul, all with easy access to the fabulous airport.  I’m crazy about New Ulm (I love a town with lots of festivals) and I wouldn’t be heartbroken to live in Mankato, Owatonna, or a number of others.  Real estate is affordable, taxes are fair (and are used wisely!), all four seasons are present and accounted for, and quality of life seems really good - from healthcare to education to crime, they seem to have a handle on it.
Tumblr media
and you knew there was a but, right?  We could happily move there knowing that we’d be close to at least one of our kids.  Matt lives in Minneapolis and the thought of having him nearby warms my heart.  But he’s weighing the pros and cons of an opportunity that would take him to the east coast and more likely to far flung parts of the world. It’s quite possible that he’d be gone in a flash and we’d be in Minnesota, once again far from family. Right now we’re a day’s drive from everyone except Matt. Truly, we could do it in a day but it would be a miserable thirteen to fourteen hours. I have scoured Maryland and settled on a little place called Ocean Pines.  It’s okay, a bit further than I’d like to be from airports, etc -  it’s between two to two and a half hours to Baltimore, D.C. or Philadelphia’s.  That also means it’s just two hours from my favorite little girl. That would be HEAVEN.  But who retires to one of the most expensive states to live in?  Would it make our golden years miserable?  Who wants to pinch pennies when you should be enjoying life?  HELP!!  Where is home?  I left Alaska more than twenty years ago, the mister was a Florida boy -  we don’t want to live in either place.  I love the prairie,  he loves the mountains.  At one point we were looking at real estate on Prince Edward Island  (affordable and gorgeous!) but Canada doesn’t want us. Seriously, we filled out the online immigration form.  We wouldn’t be able to live there year round  and I can’t imagine having to go squat across the border for a couple of months every year once we’re old and rickety.   There are pros and cons to every place we’ve looked.  No spot is perfect and we have to decide what we can and can’t live without.  If someone could just plop this house down next to my grandbaby I’ll shut up about this forever.
Tumblr media
Imagine that house surrounded by hydrangeas in the summer.  I don’t think that’s too much to ask - just a little pink house near some people I love.  Some snow would be nice now and then. What a lovely dream. This boring blog post has been brought to you courtesy of my latest level of boredom.  It was either this or go dust the bedrooms, so you had to pay the price for my laziness.   My plan for this evening is to watch the Golden Globes and through that maybe find something interesting to watch.  We’re approaching the first anniversary of when we locked down here on the Pullen spread and we’ve run out of shows to binge.  Remember how naïve we all were when we thought we’d watch Tiger King and then lockdown would be over?  At least we’re headed in the right direction now.  That’s something.  I’m thrilled that my mother is fully vaccinated and so is Dr. Matt.  A handful of my dear friends are also protected now.  I’ve lost some friends to this horrible virus, including the husband of a dear Rat Patrol member.  Our little group now includes a widow for the first time. There’s been so much heartbreak over the last year.  I’m ready for it to stop. Okay - what a crazy, rambling post.  I think I’ll go dust.  It’s probably more productive.  If you’re still here, you deserve a cookie.  Treat yourself!  If you happen to know of the perfect town (I really just want to live in Stars Hollow) send me a message!  I’ll put my dust rag down and check it out! Sending out lots of love on this drippy Saturday. Stay safe, stay well, stay sane. XOXO - Nancy

Back alleys = dumpsters
CHICAGO [November 5, 1989] — Responding to a national day of actions called for by ACT NOW, a nationwide AIDS activist network, ACT UP/Chicago and the Emergency Clinic Defense Coalition (ECDC) sponsored a demonstration held Friday, October 6 [1989], 1989 in downtown Chicago to support gay and lesbian rights and reproductive freedom.
Using street theater as the centerpiece of the action, the demonstrators reportedly chanted "back alleys are for dumpsters, closets are for clothes!" They then paraded a "freedom bed" containing lesbian, gay and straight couples making love as they lampooned the reactions of Senator Jesse Helms, "ardent anti-choice, anti-gay" state legislator Penny Pullen, Pro-Life Action League head Joseph Scheidler, the Pope and the Supreme Court.
The purpose of the dramatic display was to decry the interference of right-wing legislators in the lives of all people, and to connect issues of reproduction, sexuality and AIDS, according to ACT UP/Chicago members. "There are legal parallels between AIDS and abortion rights, particularly with the Hardwick and Webster Supreme Court decisions which affect sexual and reproductive privacy," said Carol Jonas, a spokeswoman for both ACT UP and ECDC, in a telephone conversation with OutWeek. "And our other parallel demands include free and universal health care and an end to racism and sexism."
After the performance, participants marched downtown handing out condoms with messages attached such as "put this on the penis of your choice" and "a fashion accessory that goes great with nothing."
— Keith Miller, OutWeek Magazine No. 20, November 5, 1989, p. 28.

The previous pages were filled with shopping lists, shipping dates,  curbside pickup dates, etc.  Christmas has been a lot different this year, no browsing in stores and finding just the right surprises for loved ones.  That’s been a bummer.  My shopping has been largely online and UPS has been on our porch every dang day for weeks as purchases trickled in.  Then the wrapping frenzy started.  I’ve been sitting on the floor surrounded by paper and ribbon for two days. My back aches.
Tumblr media
See all that ribbon? Purchased for pennies after Xmas last year.  I won’t be out scooping up those deals this year.  Better make it last! I hauled Matt’s box off to ship it.  There was a line out the door at our local UPS store, but people were masked and giving each other space. That’s all I can ask for, right?  I wrapped and played shipping box Jenga with the Maryland Pullens’ gifts - managed to get it all in and taped up, I’ll send it on its way tomorrow.  I didn’t get to the cookies today.  I could have, I carved out the time...I just couldn’t get excited about it. Definitely tomorrow.  I hate seeing an item unchecked on my list.  I’m using the word “I” way too much. Me,me,me! Ugh.
By Saturday the last item should be checked off on the last page of my holiday to-do list.  After that it’s all about dancing around the house to Christmas music, overdosing on Hallmark movies (yes, I know they’re predictable and sappy, that’s the beauty!), and waiting for the chubby guy in the red suit.  There will also be seasonal snacking.  There shouldn’t be, but it’s a given.  The mister ordered a big tin of popcorn from our favorite place in Maine, blue cheese for me and caramel for him.   YUM.  Did I mention that he gave me a Lindt advent calendar?  He knows that I’m religious about chocolate, so it makes sense. I’m using all of my willpower to open one door a day.  I mean, it’s not like there’s a penalty for getting off schedule.  It’s already tomorrow in Australia.  I can think of half a dozen reasons to eat tomorrow’s chocolate today.  Maybe if I wait until midnight... Oh well, there you have it, today’s bucket full of nonsense.  I need to download a library book and go to bed.  I finished a Lisa Jewell psychological thriller last night.  I need to rest my brain.  This might be a good time to reread David Sedaris’ Holidays on Ice.  It’s so entertaining, certainly more entertaining than this update. I’ll try to do better...just as soon as my list is complete. Stay safe, stay well, stay merry! XOXO, Nancy

NLP, LIES & MANIPULATION - David Scott
I decided to release this now as 2019 is rapidly approaching & so this will be the last i have to say on the matter (unless forced to defend my corner!)
NEW YEAR, NEW START, NO FRESH START!
Fresh Start Foundation's LIAR David Scott & his manipulative 'sermon' that he INSISTED numerous times that I should listen to.
Also in the conversation is 3 other FSF directors, Penny Pullen, Christine Gow & Neil McKechnie. I was invited but funnily enough i declined lol!
Janine Rennie was ALWAYS absent every single time they tried these little "tricks" with me. Which in my opinion was deliberate in their part NOT Janines.
This was his FIRST attempt to get my blog & youtube account off me.
It didn't work. Nor did it work the second time.
Then my original wordpress blog was hacked & shut down! Makes me wonder......
David is part of not only Fresh Start but also British Constitution Group, UK Column & the New Chartists Movement & is VERY pro ITNJ!
NUFF SAID LOL
For all the back ground info, please watch  https://youtu.be/M1ShfN_mFSY &

See Ya’, February!
It’s the last day of February and it looks like March is going to come in like a lion.  In like a lion, out like a lamb, right?    I’m okay with a little roaring.  I’m home alone and somewhat of an expert in weathering storms while wearing pajamas and eating chocolate dipped strawberries.  I feel like Lisa from Green Acres... except in flannel instead of a satin peignoir.  Too much of a stretch? The strawberries are actually the remnants of my Oscar snacks.  I’d forgotten that the Oscars were on Sunday and so I had to scramble to come up with a treat (I didn’t want to disappoint myself).  I didn’t have quite the right kind or quite enough chocolate for dipping, but I made it work.  Not the tidiest job I’ve ever done, but my berries wore tuxes and my mouth was happy.
Tumblr media
They were prettier the first time I did them for a celebration (below) but they tasted just as good.  Berries in formal wear are always a good idea.
Tumblr media
Now about those Oscars....good grief!  I mean, it’s not life or death - but are we really at the point in this country where we can’t even get that right?   I haven’t seen La La Land or Moonlight, both fine films, I’m sure.  I just felt awful for all of the people associated with Moonlight who were deprived of their big moment.  Then there’s the group from La La Land who were ever so gracious, but that had to sting.  What a hot mess.  What good does it do to make a show of accountants with padlocked brief cases if they can’t keep the envelopes straight?  Anyone can make an honest mistake, I guess we should all be glad that most of ours aren’t broadcast all over the world. I’m not part of that world. I live in a world where a persistent chicken might knock on your back door all day.
Tumblr media
That’s Nell.  She’s the spokesman for the group and apparently in charge of acquiring snacks for the flock as well.  Of course I caved and I think I may have created a monster.  If they start ringing the front bell I’m doomed. In other news, good things keep arriving in the mail.  A couple of days ago the mister surprised me with this sweet treat for my key chain.
Tumblr media
It’s a 1984 penny (the year we married) and and M & T for Matt and Tyler.  I love, love, love the moon and the quote.  What a beautiful mid-week,no special occasion surprise.  I do love that man o’ mine.  He knows what’s important to me.
Know what else the mail brought?  My three day pass to the Country Living Fair!  I danced all the way back from the mailbox!  This will be the third year and I’m more eager than ever.  I just know that there’s a special treasure that wants to come home with me.
Tumblr media
By purchasing mine early I get all three days or just $15 total.  That’s one heck of a deal.  It’s such a beautifully organized event and I enjoy every minute of it.   Here’s a taste of last year’s fair:
http://nancypullen.tumblr.com/post/143247105850/spring-fling
And the year before: http://nancypullen.tumblr.com/post/117298366400/country-living-fair
I. can’t. wait.
This year I may need to rent a truck.  I could just back it up to the gate and start loading.  Then we’d need a bigger house.  If you give a mouse a cookie...
If we moved then I’d have to close the diner and my regular customers would be so unhappy.
Tumblr media
Can’t have that. As you can see, life is chugging right along here on the Pullen spread. Days move past at a contented pace with occasional surprises dropped in for flavor. It’s a nice life.  No complaints from me.   I’ve got a couple of recipes to share, so I’ll blog again tomorrow.  For now I think I’ll lock the doors and turn off the lights and tell these sleepy kitties that it’s bedtime.  I’ve got a good book and there’s rain dancing on the roof - that’s a sure recipe for sweet dreams. Good night, sleep tight! XOXO
