man this was so fun!! i loved getting to hang out and joke around with everybody. also somebody (i think it was h0dge-p0dge?) suggested we all play Gartic Phone together which i am SO on board with-

nobody's fault! i'm just a bit burnt out and also i'm gonna be pretty swamped for the next few weeks/months. prom is next saturday, the musical i'm gonna be doing spotlights for is starting the week after that, and both my birthday AND graduation will be happening in May. in other words, pray for me 💀

if anyone else wants to take a turn organizing another event like this, go right on ahead! i think its so wonderful that we have this little community on here and getting to see everybody having fun together warms my cold, gamer heart. so go have fun and keep being kind to each other.

i came across this post today and it got me thinking about finnick.

when i first read mockingjay i was fifteen and a lot of it went over my head. i thought it was a bad book, simply because i wasn't prepared for a book that didn't end in a glorious victory. and naturally, i was furious when my favorite character died.

now, i have since reread MJ with a fully-cooked brain, and while i understand the novel so much more, i'm still not sure why finnick had to die.

was it to show the senselessness of it all? i mean, maybe. but we have *checks notes* three books about the senseless violence enacted by the capitol.

to be a representation of how some will never escape the capitol? i guess?? but the massacre of the victors after the QQ does a pretty good job of conveying that message. peeta's hijacking even more so, especially considering his singular goal before the 74th games was to stay himself.

prim's death was horrible and tragic, and i didn't understand it when the book came out. but i do now. she had to die. she was truly doomed by the narrative.

but finnick? i just can't parse out what the narrative purpose of his death was. if it was "good for the story."

I'm actually reading Varney the Vampire for the first time, because I'm determined to become an expert in foundational vampire history, and it's really fascinating how much it has influenced modern vampire lore. Varney, by my estimation, may have been the first vampire portrayed with fangs. More importantly, Varney seems to be the first sympathetic vampire.

The way he acts actually reminds me a lot of Barnabas Collins, another extremely influential vampire that made his debut in the soap opera Dark Shadows over a century later. Barnabas begins his story being merely a charismatic and conniving villain, but as he goes on the layers are peeled back and we see the man that longs to love and be human again. If you've read Varney, you'll recognize the comparison. Varney the Vampire and Dark Shadows actually have many striking similarities. Varney the Vampire was an extremely popular Penny Dreadful, which were basically soap operas at the time. Even the meandering plots and repetitive dialogue are the same, but it's always Varney and Barnabas that keeps the audience entertained.

I'm not sure though if I would recommend Varney the Vampire to the average person, if only because it's really long. The writers were paid by the line, so you can understand the dragged out story, but that doesn't make for very palatable reading. If you're a total nerd dedicated to the niche of vampire history like me though, you'll probably get something out of it. I don't know when or if I'll finish it, but it'd be cool to talk about with someone.

I watched the Prouder and Louder episode and they really shouldn't have even tried it with that storyline. The group being mad at Zoey was uncalled for, it's not like she can change that. Zoey wasn't even there for the initial "he only dates white girls" conversation, and as soon as she heard about it, she immediately asked Noah about it and dropped him. They should have had Zoey in on the conversation to hear Maya's original comment about Noah.

They were all truly horrible to her. They really uninvited her to a party she's been coming to for years, because of a boy.

It's not like she's just some random white girl, she's their friend, them thinking she's so undesirable and that's the only way a celebrity.. a boy would like her was just horrible.

It's giving "we only hang around you because you make me feel better about myself."

They should have bought the conversation to Noah, like do you realize how much self hate that kid has, like what do you mean you only date white girls. That would have been a good opportunity for his parents or one of Penny's parents to give him a talking too.

Would he still have bought a white girl to the dance? Yeah probably but now he would have been more aware of his actions..

Edit: I thought it was weird they just believed Maya about Noah's preference, so many people lie about their family members living near celebrities and I know she's supposed to be the new cool and chill character. But them just believing her from the go and ganging up on Zoey someone they've know for years, wasn’t it.
