I wasn't able to get back here with the girls as planned this Spring, and the lock was delayed with opening anyway, but now it's Summer, they raised the lock and the canal is open! Here's what the guard lock looks like open,...It is not any prettier,.... Swipe to look back at the place last February, the world really does change with the seasons! ~ This is a guard lock. It's a lock on the canal, but instead of raising and lowering boats, it controls the water levels each season. In the Winter it's down, sort of acting as a dam, not much water going through, and that helps protect all the other locks and equipment in the city from being wrecked by ice over the Winter. I've never seen the thing move, but check out those giant pulleys on top. Unexpected bright side to a pandemic lockdown; My Mom gave me this Canna Lilly, I think the first Summer after I moved into my studio at ART247, but the week it blooms I'm pretty much always out of town or just not able to work in the studio itself that week. The studio is open to the public even when I'm not there, so other people get to see it in full bloom, just usually not me. It has seats and spaces for wheelchairs.
