288. Sonic the Hedgehog #207

Blackout

Wow, imagine that - this issue opens with yet another battle! This time, Amadeus is leading a desperate defense against the Iron King at Fort Acorn, which if you'll recall, is the last line of defense against any attacks on the ruins of Robotropolis. This is kind of important, because all New Mobotropolis' power comes from the radioactivity present there. However, within New Mobotropolis, Sally has no idea, because she's currently on something of a date with none other than Monkey Khan!

Ah, Nicole and her lack of situational awareness. Gotta love her. Sally hastily assures her she isn't interrupting anything, so Nicole explains what's going on at Fort Acorn, and that she's taken the liberty of sending Sonic and Tails ahead to help the defense. Sally approves, and sends Khan off to help as well, but instead of heading over herself she wanders off, deep in thought about something. The defense at Fort Acorn is going rather poorly despite Amadeus' best efforts, but luckily before things get too bad Sonic and Tails arrive to save the day.

Aww! Tails flies everyone away, leaving Sonic behind as the sole defender of the fort. He does his best to contain Jun Kun's advance, but since Jun Kun is, well, invincible, this is kind of hard. Khan then shows up and an argument begins over titles and whatnot, each demanding to be called the Iron King and King of the Free People respectively, while Sonic becomes mildly bored waiting for the fighting to continue. Meanwhile back in the city, Sally visits Bunnie for a chat just as Antoine leaves to go get himself and his wife lunch. Apparently, he's been hovering nonstop ever since her incident with the Iron Queen a few days ago, despite Dr. Quack's assurances that she's now fine. Bunnie can sense something is bothering Sally, so Sally admits that she's beginning to develop feelings for someone. To her surprise, Bunnie approves without even hearing who it is, pointing out that Sally and Sonic aren't together anymore and he's tried to move on, so she should too. She then gives an amazingly detailed and accurate summary of Sally's taste in men, which pretty much sums up exactly all the previous characters she's been interested in as well.

This analysis actually brings Sally to tears, and Bunnie reassures her that she's doing the right thing by moving on, and should test the waters with her new crush to see if they're compatible. Honestly, it's an incredibly sweet scene, and I feel even those who aren't too jazzed about Sally and Monkey Khan potentially being A Thing would still agree with Bunnie's assessment here. If you want my opinion, I do think they have some genuine chemistry here now that Khan's gotten some serious character development of his own, and even though my favorite ship is the good ol' Sonic and Sally, I approve of Khan as well for the simple reason that Sally is polyamorous goddammit every sign is there let her be poly Ian.

Unfortunately, however, things aren't going so hot for Sonic and Khan. The Iron King is just too strong, and since he's stolen the Fan of Fen Xing which defeated him last time, they don't have an easy win on their hands this time. However, seeing the Iron King's thickheaded actions as he beats on the shield surrounding the city, Sonic gets an idea. Khan distracts the Iron King while Sonic quickly rushes to the power siphon that draws the energy from the ruins to contact Nicole and tell her his plan. Once she's got it, he runs back to the Iron King and… surrenders.

Pfff. The Iron King almost seems friendly there, doing the hair ruffle thing. I feel like with the right influence in his life, he could have actually been a decent, if brutish and somewhat dimwitted, guy. As he smashes up the siphon, Sonic whispers to Khan the real deal - Nicole rebuilt the entire siphon underground in a minute, leaving the one the Iron King is smashing an empty husk and the perfect diversion. Triumphant, Sonic and Khan return to New Mobotropolis, for once getting along great and joking around with each other - but Sonic is immediately surprised and confused when Sally takes Khan by the arm and leads him away to talk. However, when Amy approaches and asks him to dinner, he appears to consider something for a moment before accepting. Oh boy, I see some more dating shenanigans on the horizon…

The Iron Queen

Oh, but what about the poor, deceived Iron King? Well, the Iron Queen is currently screaming her lungs out at him for being so stupid, and similarly yelling at Snively for his own failures. When she stalks off, the Iron King irritably recounts to Snively how once upon a time, she wasn't a shrieking harpy, but rather a soft-spoken but cunning partner who awoke ancient machines within the Dragon Kingdom to serve her and Jun Kun's purposes. However, they faced heavy opposition from the four warring clans in the region, and couldn't get a proper foothold. Regina then had the idea to seek sponsorship from Robotnik, who with his technology gave them the strength they needed to conquer the free peoples of the Dragon Kingdom. However, with this new strength, the four clans recognized them as a legitimate threat and began to push harder against them. Regina tried to buy off the Bride of Rich Nights, the leader of the Yagyu Clan, but when Rich Nights refused Jun Kun killed her and allowed Regina to take the credit so she could become the clan's new bride.

Man, that is actually downright genius. It really shows how Regina, for all her screaming lately, really is an amazing tactician. In fact, I'd say she's probably so angry right now specifically because she tends to get her way, and not being able to win lately has been grating on her nerves. This story also kind of hints at the idea that she and Jun Kun aren't necessarily only together out of convenience, but respect each other as more than just business partners. I'd still say it's not a marriage of love, but it's also not just a title, either. The Iron King, finished with his story, angrily blames Snively for her coming here to the west and him subsequently being screamed at. Snively is frightened by his anger, but Jun Kun merely stalks off to think about how to get past New Mobotropolis' shield. However, Snively apparently already has a plan, and with it plans to win Regina over once more and get rid of Jun Kun so he can become her next Iron King. Oh, boy…
