penance by kanae minato [review]
read from august 6th - august 10th
Tumblr media
review:
confessions was so good & honestly this was a bit of a letdown….
the first chapter was really great & gripping, but i think with each chapter the book progressed it fell into a quite repetitive pattern. not only was it very formulaic like confessions, but the chapters themselves all followed the same beats and weren’t very interesting beyond what the characters themselves did at the end of each chapter.
confessions really benefited from this structure as following the story from each character’s perspective deepened the story, and kept pumping out great plot twist after great plot twist. this book felt like it was trying to do the same, but with making the character seeking vengeance incredibly unlikeable and portraying her as unjustified, i really was just reading to read.
sae’s chapter was really interesting and a great way to open the book imo. maki’s chapter honestly was… Mid! like it was fine but idk her chapter slammed in between sae & akiko’s felt odd. like idk we should have been building up with the “severity” of the stories, and maki’s was a weird dip in the pacing. akiko’s was only good at the end, otherwise it felt like she was just yapping to get to the end. yuka’s was also pretty boring, but i will say i preferred hers over akiko’s & maki’s. like my ranking would go: sae >>>>> yuka > akiko >>>>>> maki. emily’s mother’s chapter was also incredibly boring, and the final chapter was…. Fine!
idk i couldn’t really find an ability to give a shit about the characters beyond wanting to know what happens. minato has a good ability to hook you, but idk here it felt like she only really hooked me in at the end of each of her chapters.
i mean i still had a good time! i still wanted to know what happened! i was interested! but compared to confessions….. Flop. i was so excited to read this because confessions was actually so addictive and GOOOODDDD. and this was just ok! my expectations were ridiculously high im afraid.

“MESKI TUHAN MENGAMPUNI KALIAN, AKU TIDAK!”
Apa yang terjadi jika anak-anak usia sepuluh tahun mendapatkan ancaman seperti di atas?
Trauma seumur hidup.
Judul : Penance ( https://s.shopee.co.id/4faWGgvSiP )
Penulis : Minato Kanae
Dah ah, segitu dulu.
Have a nice day.

Reblogging cause it’s easier lol
Some literary fiction and/or thrillers I’ve liked recently (as in the past few years):
-Diavola - Jennifer Marie Thorne
-Your House Will Pay - Steph Cha
-There’s No Such Thing As An Easy Job - Kikuko Tsumura
-Winter Counts (also has mystery/thriller vibes stuff going on)
-Nothing to See Here - Kevin Wilson
-Severance - Ling Ma (nothing to do with the show haha)
-Penance - Kanae Minato
-Lone Women - Victor Lavalle
-The River - Peter Heller
also it's so fucking hard to find good books now. i haven't found a banger in so long, i'm starving. i need it to fall into my lap.

Reading Resolution: “Penance” by Kanae Minato
4. A book written in East Asia: Penance by Kanae Minato
Tumblr media
List Progress: 2/30
TW: Murder, sexual assault
Trauma, especially trauma experienced by a child, leaves a mark. Japanese author Kanae Minato’s second novel, Penance, has five different narrators who have been deeply marked and marred by the murder of a child fifteen years before. Each of them has processed their grief, fear and rage in different ways, but none of them have escaped unscathed. Minato is incredibly skilled at showing the effects of pain over time, and while this novel is a bit lacking compared to her debut, Confessions, the visceral depiction of the ripple effects of trauma is well worth the time.
Ten year old Emily Adachi is lured away from her friends and murdered by a strange man. Her four friends Sae, Maki, Akiko and Yuka all are questioned as witnesses, but none of them can describe the man’s face. Emily’s mother lashes out and blames the girls for the tragedy, and fifteen years later, right before the statute of limitations for the murder is reached, each of them reaches out to her with the story of what their life has looked like since that day. It is a great central conceit, and a brilliant way to add layers and different perspectives to the crime with each new narrator. But separating the sections so discreetly also has its downsides: the stories become somewhat repetitive after enough iterations, and the chapters vary in quality. I found the first three stories much more engaging, most likely because they were more self-contained. When the novel has to bring everything together in the last two, the seams start to show and the inconsistencies become more apparent.
Penance is not for the faint of heart, with detailed descriptions of murder and sexual assault, and the idea of spending a whole novel unpacking childhood trauma will surely turn off some readers. But the prose moves fast and the stories are exciting, so the audience is propelled forward through even the darkest moments. The ending might not be the strongest, and this book will always live in the shadow of Confessions, but it is quite engaging all on its own.
Would I Recommend It: Yes.

Hold Digging #1
Tumblr media
Photo by iam Se7en on Unsplash
My birthday month has arrived and with it, changes to this blog, content and how I obtain my books.
Originally I had a change of heart and entertained the idea of a kindle. I am in the midst of a job promotion that would force me to change workspaces, where I'd ultimately lose the bookcase I currently have. The e-reader was the perfect solution; I'd be able to continue to read books at a cheaper cost and save physical storage space. That was, until my father suggested a free and more simple option: the library. Shout out to the parents for having common sense when their children lack it.
Tumblr media
I haven't been a member of one since college when I would spend my summers back home in New England. I've been a Philadelphia resident for a year this month. It's time for a new experience.
This is also the end of my BOTM membership for the reason stated above. While I love the books I currently own, I know that there isn't much space where I stay to house over a year and a half worth of books. I'll still be using the monthly selections to help me choose my library picks; they just won't be my primary source of reading anymore.
Moving forward, what is Hold Digging? It's my monthly roundup of titles I have selected to read. (That I'm at the top of the hold list to read.)
Penance by Kanae Minato Four girls were tricked into leaving their other friend alone, who is ultimately murdered. The surviving girls are cursed by the victim's mother and are haunted by the childhood trauma once more as adults.
I chanced upon Penance a few weeks ago venturing through bookstagrams. Unfortunately I can't find the book club that was reading it, but was instantly intrigued by the story's plot. In Japan Minato is hailed as "the queen of iyamisu" (eww mystery), which focuses on grisly episodes and the dark side of human nature. Like my May read, I love a good read that relies more on the shock value of the psyche than just the dreadful descriptions of disturbing scenery. I'm also glad to continue with my pursuit of Asian female authors, so my hopes are high for this book.
Paper Ghosts: a novel of suspense by Julia Heaberlin Carl has been picked up by his daughter to take a ten-day road trip. Except she's not his daughter , but a woman hellbent on proving that the elder once murdered her sister and countless others across Texas. Is the old man lying about his failing memory or is this mystery woman the real liar?
Like a previous author from February, Heaberlin has a past with the media as an award-winning editor for several newspapers. Her interest with true-crime translates into many of the previous novels she has written. This is my first book in the serial killer genre, but it fits along with June's dark theme and looks equally as promising as the first book for the month. Not to mention it reminds me somewhat of that same February read minus the haunted school in snowy Vermont and a multiplied obsession with a siblings death.
There may be one or two book reviews, depending on how this month's transition from an after-school program to summer camp goes. In the meantime, site changes will continue and my summer TBR post will be published this month, so there are many things to look forward to.
Let me know what you're looking forward to reading this month too!
Happy reading,
A

das coisas que eu sinto lendo...
Penitência, Kanae Minato
Tumblr media

the concept for this list was: fifty books written by women about women, published within the past five years, (2017-now), that aren’t normal people and whatever else sally rooney just released. i also tried to avoid anything that gave explicitly rooney vibes. (here is why.) i stuck mostly with realism, though some have elements of fantasy or magic or horror. if you have questions about triggers for any particular book feel free to reach out.
