The discourse around Mu Qing is frankly laughable. He's the typical tsundere character who is kinda selfish and abrasive but is secretly also a nicer person than he seems. His actions and opinions aren't even that controversial? Especially when you compare him to a good portion of the characters in that novel. He just seems like a coughing baby in comparison to most of them. But I can't into most fanon interpretations of him either, especially when paired with Feng Xin (whose fanon characterization I also don't like that much). I respect the people who interpret him that way, everyone has their tastes, I just feel sad I have a hard time finding anything with him that I really like.

peiqing but is rlly just pei ming flirting w mu qing for a couple of centuries thinking it was only fun and games and no attachment and then suddenly one day he sees mu qing doing the most normal thing ever, not even trying to look pretty or attractive, maybe frowning or tripping in his own shoes, and then pei ming's mind goes like "OH SHIT I ACTUALLY DO LOVE HIM WHAT THE HELL"

I can absolutely see this.

Imagine, you have the God of Love, a known Casanova amongst women and like 1,000 years old, who is totally 100% sure that he is a StraightTM man who just happens to be secure enough in his sexuality and masculinity to flirt with another man just for the sake of humor.

Only to be hit with 1,000 years worth of Bi Panic✨ over said male god who is effectively a cat and a cactus fused into one sentient being and who is eternally a hairsbreadth away from skewering Pei Ming with his saber. And, worst of all, he's abstinent.

About 550-ish years ago (more or less), Pei Ming as a new martial god and Mu Qing deviating from his cultivation path for a hot minute. They somehow manage to keep it up for 50 years before having a massive blowout and ending it.

Mu Qing returned to his original cultivation path.

Pei Ming swore off men forever.

And everyone just assumed they always hated each other and things had finally boiled over.
