peggysous week, day 1
Also on ao3 - here! (and tagging @peggysousweek!)
Without further ado (partly because it's real late here and I have to be awake at a decent human time tomorrow), I present to you at a closer distance!
“Shut the door behind you, don’t want to let the cold in,”
“How did we end up here, five miles outside the ass end of New Jersey, anyway, Peggy?”
“Because your hunch, which turned out to be right, keep in mind, meant that we have to find this stash before they do, and we just happened to drive into the worst snowstorm in over a decade - oh good, there’s a fireplace; could you see if there’s some wood around?”
“Now, where’s the kindling…”
“Got some!”
“Wonderful!”
“...”
“...”
“Not like that, Peggy, the newspaper first!”
“Alright, Boy Scout of America, you do it, if you’re so clever,”
“I actually was a Boy Scout, so I’d hold off on the sarcasm if I was you. Go see what we’ve got in the way of food and or beds.”
“As much as I want to disagree, Daniel, those are eminently practical steps. I want you to know I’m only doing this under duress,”
“If you say so, Carter,”
“Uhh… Daniel?”
“Yeah?”
“There's only one bed.”
“Okay, you take the -”
“It’s okay, we can both -”
“What?”
“What?”
“No, Peggy, it’s alright, I’ve slept on worse,”
“So have I, Daniel, and you’ve got your leg to take care of,”
“No, no, it’ll be fine for one night - “
“We’ll both be more use and less irritable tomorrow if you just give in, Daniel. It is the most practical solution, after all,”
“But - ”
“Oh, for the love of all things holy, if you're about to lean on propriety or honour or some nonsense like that, I’ll throw you out of this house myself, Daniel. Do you forget I was with the Howling Commandos?
“Peggy, I -”
“I insist, Daniel. It is the easiest solution, unless you want to be stoking the fire every couple of hours,”
“If you’re sure…”
“I am.”
“Alright,”
He couldn’t sleep. Despite the advantage of not having to deal with a throbbing leg in the morning, being this close to Peggy as she slept was not doing anything for the torch he was still carrying. He thought if he could just put some distance between them at work them he might be able to lick his wounds and grieve in peace; instead, just his luck, he landed in exactly the opposite situation. It’s not like he could get any closer.
Her gentle let-down had stung, of course, but she had carried on as if she was trying to move past it and not treat him any different from before; which he appreciated, because he wasn’t sure how he would have dealt with a cold shoulder. (The idea that she could become awkward didn’t even cross his mind. She knew herself, was, well, too much Peggy Carter for that.) She was kind of his only good friend at the SSR. Was the only one who didn’t underestimate him, for that matter. In fact, she had delivered a rather scathing and unfortunately accurate assessment of him during the Stark case. Another reason why he should get some distance, probably.
Oh, but it wasn’t going to be easy; he enjoyed working with her, matching minds with someone who treated him like an equal, someone who didn’t give a second thought to his competence. That was something that he had sorely missed with the other agents. At least if he was to run an office, he would have to be respected. He breathed out a sigh, watching the flyaway strands of her hair quiver in the moonlight, and closed his eyes.
She couldn’t sleep - she had thought being so close to Daniel wouldn’t be a problem; they were adults, after all. But her mind was whirring - with so many questions - all of which made her feel like an adolescent. Why hadn’t he asked her out again? Had it only been a friendly invitation? If so, this made the lack of subsequent invitations a mystery. She had certainly tried to be open and communicative. Did she even want it to be a romantic interest? A moment of introspection told her that she might, or at least that she was not closed off to the possibility. Daniel was kind, and gentle, and quietly brave. She admired him.
But good lord, if he wanted to express any intentions, he was taking his time about it. She tried to suppress a smile as she imagined how stunned he would be and how red he would go if she came straight out with it - though perhaps this was not the best way to go about it. Despite being confident in his work life, she could imagine he would be a deer in the headlights and decidedly less confident in his personal life.
Suddenly she was overcome with the urge to nestle into his side; damn his intentions, she wanted to see if this was something he was still open too, and she had the cover of being asleep if he decided to take offence to it in the morning. It felt, off, somehow, like she had reverted to a blushing young girl, but at least after this she’d know one way or the other - or she’d have one more piece of evidence for or against, anyway. It was incredibly silly, she chastised herself, but she found herself shifting in the blanket she had wrapped around herself (a concession to Daniel’s sense of propriety, after all) and rolled into his chest, pressing her forehead into his shoulder and letting out a long breath. He was quite warm, actually, and she could feel his body heat through the blanket...
Daniel’ entire being froze when she gently collided with his chest. His thoughts, which had been, finally, beginning to slow, came to an abrupt stop, and could only focus on the soft huff of Peggy getting settled again. He had jumped slightly when she rolled over, leaving his hand outstretched, elbow still on the lumpy mattress. The only place for it to rest where it wouldn’t hurt in the morning was on her head. So, despite everything, he placed his hand on her head. His thumb started to stroke her temple without conscious input, and the rest of him was screaming at him that this would not help. His mind drifted back to the offer he’d gotten a few days ago, a position in LA. It would be more responsibility, better pay, a chance to prove himself. Perhaps he should take it after all, give his bruised heart a chance to heal. Having situations like this continuing to crop up was the complete opposite of what he needed. He’d look into it tomorrow.
He almost wanted to whisper her name, make sure she was really asleep, that she didn’t mind being so close; but it stuck in his throat.
But perhaps he could allow himself this final intimacy.
Just this. Just this once.

Cool as a cucumber (or not)
Peggysous week day 7: Free day
Summary/ notes: Peggy was stressed. Daniel was also stressed. Neither of them thought the other was stressed; they both thought that their partner would be as cool as a cucumber and that their own panic was irrational.
Or, Peggy and Daniel head off on their first date
The final day of Peggysous week! This is something that's been floating around in my wips for a while, so here's Peggy getting ready for her and Daniel's first date (featuring Howard being Howard (which in this fic means a sex joke I guess).
Also published here on AO3
Peggy was stressed. Daniel was also stressed. Neither of them thought the other was stressed; they both thought that their partner would be as cool as a cucumber and that their own panic was irrational. After Isodyne and zero matter, crazed starlets and newly freed Russian assassins, they both deserved a little downtime and a night out together.
"Miss Carter!"
Peggy's face broke into a wide grin as Mrs Jarvis rushed, as fast as she could after her injury, into her bedroom. "Hello Mrs Jarvis."
"Oh, it is wonderful that you've decided to stay longer!" She grasped Peggy for a brief yet strong hug, her eyes narrowing as she let go. "I sense that you are in need of a fashion advisor. Tell me what you require and I will assist you."
Peggy laughed, running a hand over the back of the armchair sat in front of her vanity. "Yes, well, I'm heading out to dinner tonight with a..."
"Mr Sousa, of course." Mrs Jarvis nodded, giggling as Peggy's face crumpled in confusion. "Oh my dear, the only people who didn't know were the two of you yourselves!"
Peggy groaned, smiling ruefully. "It couldn't possibly have been that obvious!"
"I assure you, it was. Now come with me. I have the perfect dress for you." Gesturing for her to follow, Ana led her out of the room and down the hall.
"Mrs Jarvis, where on earth are you taking me?"
Looking back at her companion, Ana smiled smugly. "First of all, my name is Ana. We are friends and so you shall use it."
"Okay, Ana, then I insist that you call me Peggy."
"It would be my pleasure. Second of all, I acquired a lovely dress sometime last year that does not really work with my figure. It has never been worn, such a shame because it is a beautiful colour, but I believe it would suit you perfectly."
"How can you be sure it will fit me?" Peggy questioned as she was led into a spare room.
"I can't," Ana shot over her shoulder as she opened a wardrobe and withdrew a garment bag. "But as you know I am quite adept with a needle and thread, so I am sure I could alter it if necessary."
With a bit of wiggling, Ana worked the dress out of the bag, before twirling it around for Peggy to see. "Of course, if you don't like it you can decline."
Peggy was already spellbound. The dress was a deep blue with a fitted bodice and cut out sections along the short sleeves. The skirt was fuller than other garments she owned, giving it a beautiful, but not too overdramatic, volume when it spun.
Ana handed it over to Peggy, who took it off her with a small smile. She went behind the privacy screen to quickly change into it. The dress fit surprisingly well, although a few areas did need altering.
Peggy emerged and Ana clapped her hands together, letting a small squeal out. "Oh, you look gorgeous! I can already imagine Mr Sousa's face when he sees you in it."
"Are you sure I can have this Ana?" Peggy asked, smoothing down a wrinkle in the fabric. "After everything you've done, I would hate to start encroaching on your wardrobe as well."
"Nonsense," Ana countered, searching for and finding a sewing kit nearby. "It is a gift! For.... saving Los Angeles and quite possibly the world."
Peggy laughed as Ana got to work, pinning and marking a few places around the bodice and where it joined the skirt. "When do you need to be ready by?"
"Daniel said he would be here between 6 and half past," Peggy answered, removing the dress when Ana motioned for her to.
"Oh, we'll have plenty of time to spare then," Ana reassured.
Nodding happily, Peggy excused herself to touch up her makeup and retrieve some accessories. She felt like she was walking on a cloud, a surprising giddiness taking over her heart. 6 o'clock couldn't come fast enough.
It didn't.
Peggy found herself pacing the living room, glancing at the clock every couple of seconds. She had donned the dress a half hour ago, along with a pair of silver earrings and a necklace to match. A pair of low heels sat waiting by the front door for her alongside a handbag for the night. Although she would never admit it to anyone else, she had spent a moment or two spinning in the dress, admiring the way it puffed out and then settled back down with a satisfying swish.
A low whistle broke her from her thoughts and she turned to see Howard leaning on the doorframe in a robe.
"Oh for heaven's sake Howard!" she cried. "I'm wondering if you even own clothes at this point."
"Hey, my house my rules Peg," Howard answered, looking her up and down. "You look real nice, by the way."
Peggy smiled genuinely, still feeling like she should continue pacing, however. " Thank you, I appreciate it."
"No problem. Sousa's gonna agree with me, I'm sure."
As if on cue, there was a hesitant knock on the front door. Peggy laughed out loud as she watched Mr Jarvis sprint past the living room to open the door.
"Mr Sousa!" she heard him say. "Lovely to see you again. I will fetch Miss Carter right away."
Mr Jarvis rounded the corner to the living room. "Mr Sousa has arrived."
"Yes I noticed," Peggy answered, still laughing a little.
"Be back by ten kid, no funny business." Howard pointed a stern finger at Peggy, putting on his best concerned father face.
She rolled her eyes fondly. "Of course dad, there's nothing to worry about."
Daniel was engaging in polite conversation with Mrs Jarvis when Peggy turned the corner into the entryway. He looked like he was about to laugh at something she said, but then his eyes landed on Peggy and he stalled completely.
"Hello Daniel," she said.
"Hey Peg." Daniel cleared his throat, gaze still glued to Peggy. "You, uh, you look beautiful."
"You don't look half bad yourself." Peggy grinned at him and Daniel was suddenly glad for the crutch to support him as his remaining leg seemed to turn to jelly.
Daniel usual Hawaiian shirt had been swapped out for a plainer one, paired with the same jacket he'd worn the day of the Isodyne explosion. His tie, however, was a far too perfect match to her dress for it to be a coincidence.
Peggy quickly glanced at Ana, who just smiled innocently.
Ana clapped her hands together, looking between the two of them. "Well, we shouldn't keep you any longer! Have a lovely night you two."
She shooed the pair out of the door and shut it firmly behind them. Peggy looked to Daniel, only to find him staring back through the window of Stark's villa.
"Did you leave something inside?" she asked.
Daniel actually blushed a little when he turned back to face her. "No, well yes, but uh-" Words failing him, he pointed back through the window to a bouquet of flowers sat next to the door, the sight warped by the frosted glass. "I brought flowers."
To her surprise, she found herself beaming back at him. "Thank you, Daniel, they look lovely. Now, unless you'd prefer to have our date on Howard's front porch, I suggest we get a move on."
They'd made it only halfway down the drive before Daniel realised something was wrong. "Peggy, I believe we have an audience."
He subtly jerked his head back towards the house, raising his eyebrows as he did. Peggy over her shoulder, finding Howard and both Mr and Mrs Jarvis watching them as they walked away. A sly smile crept onto her face as she formulated a plan.
"Well, why don't we give them something to watch?"
Daniel caught on to her plan when she stopped in her tracks and turned to face him. Peggy pulled him closer to her, wrapping her arms around him, and into a passionate kiss a minute later. Together, they sank into that fire for a moment, letting it consume them both.
Until the distinct sound of a window slamming open echoed from the house.
"If you guys ever need condoms you know where to find me!"
"Mr Stark!"
"I'm just offering my services Jarvis. Being a good friend, right Peg?"
Peggy just ignored him, instead slipping her arm around Daniel's. It was then that she noticed the deeper flush that coloured his cheeks once again. She leaned in to press a swift kiss to his cheek.
"Let's go, before Howard decides we need more relationship advice."

Need You Now
(Peggysous Week 2021)
Day 4: song fics; @peggysousweek thanks for hosting!
Summary: Peggy and Daniel are thinking about and missing each other while being separated by many many miles. (Set between Season 1 and 2)
Song: Need You Now by Lady A (listen here, this is my favourite version of the song!)
A/N: This is the first time I am writing a Peggysous fic, which is why I am quite anxious about uploading this, but here it is. I ended up writing something with almost no plot and a lot of yearning oops.
Also, English is not my first language so I apologise for all the mistakes and the misuse of words!
You can read this here on Ao3 as well if you like :)
~*~
Picture perfect memories
Scattered all around the floor
Reaching for the phone cause
I can't fight it anymore.
With a sigh, Peggy ran her hand through her hair and shook her head. It could definitely not go on like this.
Ever since he had left New York, she was behaving so unlike herself that even she found it hard to believe.
And yet here she was, sitting alone in her room, next to the open window, looking outside into the dark street, the shining of the street lamps the only light on that cloudy Friday night.
Daniel Sousa was gone, that was a fact, and instead of feeling miserable she should be moving on and should go on with her life like every sensible human being would do. After all, she should be happy for him, shouldn't she?
It was a big opportunity for him, becoming the chief of the SSR West Coast bureau, and why not take the chance if there was nothing - or no one - holding him back?
She couldn't help but wonder, though, about what could have been, would he not have decided to take the position. Or if she hadn't wrecked it all.
For a second, she closed her eyes, reveling in their shared little memories. All the times Daniel had aped Jack whenever the latter was acting up again, making Peggy chuckle. All the times Daniel had brought her a cup of coffee whenever she had been delving into the huge amount of paperwork that had to be done, that lovely smile of his on his lips when he had placed the cup on her desk.
And then, a certain memory resurfaced, a wonderful memory that was very dear to her and back then had whirled up the feelings in her heart.
It had been the birthday of one of the SRR's agents, and after finishing time most of them had decided to celebrate at a bar. While practically all of the agents had been either playing cards half drunken or playing a drinking game fully drunken, Daniel and Peggy had been sipping their drinks together, sitting slightly away from the others.
The two of them had been talking a lot that evening, sitting close to each other and really getting to know the other. They had talked about their childhoods, he had told her about his three siblings, and she had told him everything she missed about England.
And it had been that evening that Peggy had realised that she may be feeling something more than just friendship for that man in front of her.
But of course she had ruined it all and everything had gone downhill. Why exactly, she couldn't quite tell. Perhaps it had been because of her fear of falling in love again, or because of her fear of losing someone dear to her again. Or perhaps it had been something else, she couldn't quite say.
Her gaze fell upon the phone that was standing on her desk, and for an instance she felt the urge to call him. To hear his voice, to have a conversation like the ones they used to have during their little breaks.
But quickly, she scrapped the idea and put down the receiver she had involuntarily picked up. It was already after ten o'clock in Los Angeles, and he was probably already in bed. And besides, she had already called him once two weeks ago, and once last week, but he hadn't returned any of her calls. For Peggy, this was a clear signal: he had moved on.
She couldn't reproach him, though, that he had decided to move on. After all that had happened...or more precisely not happened. No, she really couldn't have expected him to stay. Daniel Sousa was gone, and she had to get over it.
And I wonder if I ever cross your mind.
For me it happens all the time.
But despite her thoughts she couldn't help but wonder if after all, he still may be thinking about her once in a while. Because ever since the day she had come to know that he had accepted the offer, Daniel had never left her mind. Even though she had tried her best to distract herself.
It's a quarter after one.
I'm all alone and I need you now.
He had always taken care of her, and she had taken it for granted and had grown accustomed to it, not appreciating his efforts as she ought to have done. But now that he was gone, she realised how much he had grown on her, how much his absence actually hurt...and how much she actually needed him in her life.
And I don't know how I can do without
I just need you now.
~*~
Another shot of whiskey
Can't stop looking at the door.
Wishing you'd come sweeping in the way you did before.
With a sigh, Daniel rose his glass to his mouth and took another sip. This wasn't exactly how he had imagined himself to be spending his first Friday evening off. But here he was, sitting on a bar stool at the counter, deep in thoughts.
The past few weeks had been very busy, moving to L.A. and taking a new position, a leading position, as chief of the new branch of the SSR, which was why he had barely had time to sit down and catch a breath.
But this had turned out to be a good thing after all, because otherwise he wouldn't have been able to bear the thoughts that he had been pushing aside into the deepest parts of his mind.
He had left New York with mixed feelings three weeks ago. He was excited for the new chapter of his life that was starting, and he was proud that he had been offered such an important position. But there were certain things that he was leaving behind that he really was going to miss. Or more precisely a certain person.
Daniel's gaze had wandered towards the door, watching the people who were occasionally coming in and out the bar. Suddenly, the door swung open and a brunette woman entered the room, walking hand in hand with a tall blonde man who was wearing a hat. As she turned over to her companion, Daniel could see that she was wearing red lipstick and that her nails were painted red as well. The way she was leaning against the counter, laughing while the man was talking, painfully reminded Daniel of that certain someone he had tried his best not to think of.
Oh, how much he wished that it was Peggy who had swept into the room that very moment.
No, he couldn't deny it that she was the one thing he was terribly missing since his move. If there had been a slight possibility, a tiny little chance, that she may be feeling that certain connection he thought he had felt between them, he may have thought twice before taking the job.
But apparently it had been all in his head, apparently he had been hoping for something that just wasn't there.
Maybe Krzeminski had been right after all. No girl was going to trade in a red, white and blue shield for an aluminium crutch, he was never going to be good enough for her. They may have worked good as a team, they may have even been friends, but that was it. Nothing more.
And even though being her friend wasn't bad, he had to admit that it wasn't enough for him. He couldn't just be around her and be her friend, it was impossible. The pain was to much, and he couldn't simply turn off his heart and stop feeling what he felt.
So the only thing left to do was to move on and to forget her. But this was so much easier said than done.
And I wonder if I ever cross your mind.
For me it happens all the time.
Two weeks ago, though, she had called. When he had left New York, their demeanour towards each other had been very awkward and uptight, which is why he never would have expected to hear from her again.
And yet she had called the office, two times so far, wanting to speak to him. He had been on the way both of the times, which had spared him the pressure of actually having to pick up the receiver and talk to her.
He hadn't been able to bring himself to call her back yet. Yes, he missed her like crazy, even though he had always tried to disregard those feelings. But would talking to her really change anything? Change the way he felt? And what should he have said to her? Should he just have talked to her like nothing had happened? Like there wasn't a 2.500 mile distance between them?
No, he may be behaving like a coward by not getting in touch with her and not facing her, but it was the only possibility for him.
There was a little comfort for him, though, in knowing that since she had tried to call him, she must have not yet forgotten him completely.
It's a quarter after one.
I'm a little drunk and I need you now.
It was a terrible state he was in, torn between yearning for wanting Peggy in his life, his heart completely having fallen for her and at the same time knowing that if he didn't let go of her, he would be feeling miserable forever. And even though everything inside him was screaming no, he had to forget her and move on.
"Great job so far.", he murmured sarcastically and took the last sip of Whisky. Of course he had ordered the very thing Peggy would have chosen if they had been out together.
Feeling how the Whisky was showing its effect and was starting to addle his brain, he picked up his crutch and stood up. He had had enough for the night. With a last glance at the brunette and her companion, he straightened his shoulders and left the bar, disappearing into the dark.
And I don't know how I can do without
I just need you now.

Note
You’re right - I meant “without people” :)
The "Without Words" theme - does that mean anything in particular?
are you talking about the without people theme for day 6? if you are (and if not please tell me!) that was on the artist prompt list and it's just a representation of peggysous without them specifically in the piece of art, like moodboards/aesthetics, or like if someone did a drawing of those little desk name signs with their names on it :)

peggysous week, day 5
also on ao3 here!
for the better
"People often focus on the 'worse' part of for better or for worse; but doesn't it feel wonderful to be here for the better,"
It’s an inconsequential Saturday afternoon, about a year and a half after they had married. Peggy had her head resting on Daniel’s thigh as they sat on the sofa, her dozing, fiddling with her ring, and he absorbed in the Hobbit (she had declared it a disgrace, when he admitted to having not read any Tolkien, and had found a second-hand set the very next day).
She had taken his hand in hers when she had said it, threading her fingers in between his, the sentence falling from her lips before her conscious mind could catch up with the sentiment. It was true, though, and she had been marinating in the feeling almost as long as the sun had been streaming through the blinds, making patterns on the front of her dress. She moved her hand through the dappled light, Daniel’s hand over the top of hers.
He looked down at the movement of their hands, and pressed a kiss to her forehead. He watched the glint of the rings in the light as she continued to move them across her stomach, still marveling at how they reflected in the light, even after all this time.
In another quick move, she swapped their hands over so that his was underneath hers and pressed against the soft rounding of her belly. Something fluttered, small but definite under his palm, and she grinned up at him.
“How long?” he whispered.
“Since yesterday afternoon,” she breathed back.
He smiled back at her. “For the better. Yeah, Peg, it really does.”

Enouement
Peggysous week day 6: Emotion words
Summary/ notes: Peggy had been in love before, but there was something different about it this time.
Day 6 of Peggysous week was emotion words! This was one of the first words I found and I just had to choose it. As for the definition:
Enouement - The bittersweetness of having arrived in the future, seeing how things turn out, but not being able to tell your past self
Also posted here on AO3
"Peggy?"
Daniel's head poked around the open back door of his Los Angeles bungalow. Peggy sat in one of the patio chairs, dressed in her nightgown with a thin blanket drawn across her shoulders. She stared pensively off into the distance, seemingly unaware of Daniel's approach.
Peggy glanced over when she heard Daniel's crutches tapping across the wooden deck. The steady step tap step tap of his strides was a welcome comfort by now.
"Good morning darling."
Before Daniel could reach the other chair, Peggy shifted in her seat to make room next to her. He ended up sitting more behind her than to the side, letting Peggy drape the blanket over both of them and tuck herself up against his chest.
"You should be glad I take up less space than I used to, otherwise we'd be a bit stuck here," Daniel joked, hoping the casual air would loosen the tension he could see was tying her in a knot. "What's on your mind?"
For a moment, he received no response. So he let Peggy somehow curl deeper into him as the chirping of some far off cricket broke the stillness of the early morning.
Daniel had just reached up to run his hands through her hair (he knew physical touch helped clear her mind sometimes) when her whispered response slipped out.
"You."
"Me?" he muttered, equally as hushed, into the crown of her head.
"You, this... us." Peggy turned her head to the side, a bright yet uncharacteristically shy smile across her face. "All good thoughts, I assure you."
"Well that's a relief."
Peggy huffed out a laugh, turning back to face the garden she had taken a surprising liking to. After many a gardening tip from Mr and Mrs Jarvis (as well as some seeds to get her started) she had managed to plant a respectable enough flower patch. A rosebush, bare of flowers for the time being, was surrounded by a small collection of peonies and tulips and a small palm tree of all things was growing in the back corner. She hadn't planted that one, but didn't mind it being there.
She shifted a little, and Daniel could tell she was ready to talk.
"I've been in love before. One and a half times, I'd say."
"A half?"
Peggy was sure that if she looked around at him, she would find an eyebrow raised and one of his infuriatingly curious smiles across his lips.
"Let me finish," she scolded lightly, grinning nonetheless. "With Fred everything was black and white. A lady must do this, a lady must not do that. Looking back, I don't know if I really loved him or if I just liked the stability of it all. I liked feeling as if I was doing the right thing. It might have been the right thing for my parents, but not for me. Michael made me see that, so I left to join the SOE."
Throughout it all, Daniel just listened. Peggy had noticed long ago that he was very good at that.
"After that, I met Steve. He was small, just a regular man from Brooklyn who wanted to do the right thing. The serum made him as strong on the outside as he was on the inside and then all of a sudden, he was Captain America: the star-spangled man with a plan. I went off to Europe and he went on tour to raise money and morale. Then he ran off to save his best friend from Hydra and I realised how much I'd grown to care for him. But we were over before we even began. One kiss and a rushed plan to go on a date, and then all of a sudden he was gone."
Peggy breathed in deeply, noticing that at one point during her speech, Daniel had started stroking swirling patterns onto her arm. She felt a huge weight lift from her shoulders as she reached a hand up to grab the one stroking her arm.
"You see people talking about true love and the one and how that only comes around once. I thought I'd lost that, and I was prepared to spend the rest of my life alone. Until I met you."
She couldn't help but smile when she thought of their journey up to that point.
"While I didn't feel like this from the very start, I have always respected you as an agent and as a friend. You treat me like an equal but you aren't afraid to challenge me if you think I'm doing something reckless. You're always there for me and you're the most loving partner I could have ever asked for."
"I love you too Peggy," Daniel said simply, filling the quiet moment. He dropped his head, kissing her shoulder. "Love you so much."
"The only regret I have is how bloody long it took us to get here."
They both laughed, letting the early morning joy wash over them.
"Did anything bring this on or are all of your thoughts this philosophical?"
Peggy sighed, the breath leaving her as her shoulders slumped. "Sometimes I wish I could send a message to myself immediately after the war. Just to let her, me, know that everything would get better."
"I know how you feel," he answered stroking a hand down Peggy's hand. "But everything did work out quite nicely, didn't it?"

Summary: Jack's been watching Peggy and Daniel dance around each other since the day she started working at the SSR. He's tired of seeing them exchange longing looks in the bullpen, and especially after finding Daniel in a low moment, Jack decides it's time to take things into his own hands and give Sousa the help he won't give himself.

"See you tomorrow, Peggy!"
Jack watched from his office doorway as Daniel perked up in his chair the second Peggy Carter walked past. He beamed at her, and she gave him an equally cheery farewell before heading out the door. Those two had been dancing around each other for months, and although it sometimes got frustrating to watch, it also never stopped being entertaining.
Daniel watched Peggy until she disappeared around a corner, the smile never leaving his face. Normally, Jack just observed without saying anything, but Daniel looked like a lovesick puppy with hearts coming out of his eyes. He couldn't hold back a chuckle this time.
Daniel whirled on Jack at the noise, the smile on his face transforming into a scowl.
"Is something funny?" he demanded. Jack just laughed and shook his head, arms crossed over his chest as he looked at Sousa.
"Yeah. You. You're staring at Carter like all you want to do is follow her around worshipping the ground she walks on," said Jack with a snort. Daniel's scowl instantly deepened.
"I am not. I was just saying goodbye to a friend."
"Sousa, if you said goodbye to me like that, I'd probably slap you."
Daniel scoffed, but as he turned away to shake his head, Jack noticed a slight blush rising to Daniel's cheeks. Jack just grinned.
"All I'm saying, Sousa, is you might as well go for it. Nothing could be worse than this limbo you're in with Carter now."
"Jack, I'm warning you, mind your own damn business," Daniel growled. Jack just laughed again as he turned to head back into his office.
"Whatever you say, Sousa. I'm just telling you, you and Carter could be a hell of a lot happier if you'd just talk to each other. Or if you got up the guts to ask her out."
Jack closed the door to his office and shut the blinds before Daniel could respond. He had a lot of work to do (he was the Chief of the SSR, after all), and he couldn't let messing with Sousa distract him all day.
****************
Jack sighed, tiredly removing his hat and coat as he walked into the bar. It had been a long, long week of work at the SSR, and all he wanted to do was have a drink and then pass out in his bed at home.
He started heading to an open seat at the bar to do just that when he noticed someone sitting at the far end of the bar, paying no attention to his surroundings. Sousa was nursing a drink, a gloomy expression on his face.
Jack contemplated turning around and going somewhere else. It wouldn't be hard, since there was another bar less than a block away, and Daniel hadn't seen him. But, after a few moments of debating with himself, Jack heaved a heavy sigh and headed towards Daniel.
"Hey Sousa. You look like shit," said Jack by way of greeting as he took the seat next to Daniel. Daniel spared him a glance, then went right back to scowling into his drink.
"Go away, Jack. I'm not in the mood for it tonight."
"When are you ever in the mood for it?" scoffed Jack. He expected Daniel to at least snort in response, but he got nothing. Daniel didn't even acknowledge his existence.
Clearly this was more serious than Jack originally thought.
"Hey, come on Sousa. Tell me what's wrong," said Jack, his tone more sincere than it ever was when he talked to Daniel. He turned in his seat to face his fellow agent, then gave his shoulder a gentle nudge. "You clearly need someone to talk to tonight, and I'm here. We can go back to hating each other tomorrow."
Daniel sighed heavily, barely glancing at Jack before looking back at his drink. Jack was about to give up when Daniel spoke.
"It's just been a bad day, alright?" Daniel muttered, barely loud enough for Jack to hear. He was pointedly looking anywhere but at Jack. "I worked the night shift with Krezminski last night, which is never enjoyable."
Jack didn't say anything when Daniel paused. Instead, he used the classic interrogation technique of staying silent to encourage Daniel to speak up again and spill his guts. After a few, slightly uncomfortable moments of waiting, Thompson's tactics were rewarded.
"Krezminki made this stupid comment," started Daniel, his voice a little louder now although he still wouldn't look at Jack. "And normally nothing he said would ever bother me, but... well, this one struck a cord, unfortunately."
"...What'd he say?" asked Jack, trying to keep his voice low and calm. Daniel sighed, looking up at the ceiling like he was praying for strength, and answered.
"'No girl's gonna trade in a red, white, and blue shield for an aluminum crutch'," Daniel recited. Thompson scowled, and he made a mental note to give Krezminski all of the worst, shittiest duties possible for the next few weeks. "It's stupid, right? I mean, it's not like I even care, Peggy can do what she wants-"
"Hey, enough of that," said Jack, putting a hand on Daniel's shoulder to stop him mid-thought. "Krezminski's nothing but a dumb ape, he doesn't know what he's talking about. Any girl would be lucky to be going out with you, Peggy freaking Carter included."
Daniel turned his head to look at Jack for the first time all night. His expression was one of pure shock and confusion, and if Jack weren't so focused on comforting Sousa, he'd be offended.
"Look, Sousa, I know we're not usually... gushy... in our relationship. And if you repeat a word of this to anyone, I'll deny it under oath and fire you." That one got a small laugh out of Daniel. "But you're one of the smartest, strongest, and best people that I know. Even when you're being a pain in my ass. And I know for a fact that Carter sees that too.
"And I don't know much about who Captain America was before he died," Jack continued before Daniel could speak. "But I do know he'd be in a losing battle if he were in a competition with you to date Carter. You'd kick his star spangled ass."
Daniel snorted, but there was a smile on his face as he took another sip of his drink.
"Thanks, Thompson. I appreciate it."
"Hey, I mean it. I'm not gonna sit here and lie to you just because you're feelings are hurt," said Jack. Daniel laughed again, and Jack couldn't hold back a smile either. It was nice to see Sousa in a better mood, especially since he'd seemed so down a few minutes ago.
"So what? This gonna be the new usual for us?" asked Daniel, sitting up a little straighter as he shook off the last of the storm clouds hovering over him. "You're actually gonna be a decent person instead of an arrogant ass?"
Jack reached over and grabbed Daniel's drink, which was still mostly untouched. He downed it all in one go like a shot, then slammed it back down on the table before looking at Sousa again.
"Nope. I'll see you in the morning at work, where everything will be back to normal. I'll order you around, you'll be snarky about it, and neither of us will pay Krezminski any attention." Daniel smiled as Jack stood, putting his coat and hat back on. He turned to leave, then paused and turned back to Daniel. "Oh, and Sousa? Do us both a favor and ask Carter out sooner rather than later, would you?"
Daniel just flipped Jack off before turning to order another drink. Jack smiled, this time not looking back as he headed out of the bar. Now that Sousa had been successfully cheered up, he needed to find a peaceful place to get a drink.
****************
"Peggy... I can't stop thinking about you," Daniel breathed. He could barely get the words out, and he couldn't help shaking his head as he spoke them. "You're the most incredible woman I've ever met, and... well, I wanted to see if-"
"Alright, enough," Jack interrupted, holding up a hand to cut Daniel off. Jack had finally talked Daniel into asking Peggy out, but Daniel insisted on finding the perfect way to do it. And, since Jack had been the one to convince him, Daniel had drafted Jack into helping him practice his speech.
"What? Why'd you stop me?" Daniel demanded. They'd been locked in Jack's office with the blinds drawn for the last half hour, trying to get everything dialed in so Daniel could talk to Peggy before everyone left for the night.
"Because you were taking forever to spit out what you were trying to say!" Jack cried. "Sousa, just ask her out. It's not hard. You can declare your love for her after your first date."
"It's not hard? Are you kidding me?" Daniel demanded, his voice louder and stronger than it had been all day.
"No, I'm not kidding you! 'Hey, Marge, wanna grab drinks after work?... Great!' How is that hard?" Jack yelled back.
"Based on the fact you didn't even get her name right, I'm gonna go ahead and say you failed, and are officially the worst person I could've asked to help me with this," Daniel shot back.
"Sousa, I'm trying to help you! Just go out there and ask her on a date! Everyone in the office will thank you for it!"
"So what, I'm just supposed to ambush her on her way out the door? What if she says no?"
"She won't say no." Jack huffed a sigh, then refocused on Sousa. "Tell me what you're gonna say to her. Keep it short."
Daniel let out a long, frustrated breath, but he listened to Jack anyway.
"Peggy, I've been thinking-"
"No! Too long! Just get to the point with it!"
"Alright, alright: Don't worry about it if you have something going on tonight, but-"
"SOUSA. STOP BEATING AROUND THE BUSH. SAY 'CARTER-'"
"I don't need you to tell me what to say, Jack!" Daniel shouted back. "I think I've got a better idea of how to ask Peggy out to dinner than you do!"
Jack just grinned at Daniel, all the fight and fire out of his expression.
"Oh really? You think you've got a better strategy than me?" asked Jack. He was still smiling in triumph, which Daniel seriously didn't get. At least, not until he heard a voice speak up from behind him.
"Daniel? What on Earth is going on in here?"
Daniel whirled around to see the one and only Peggy Carter standing behind him. She'd walked in to investigate all the shouting, especially after hearing Thompson yell her name, which was exactly what Jack had been hoping for.
"Peggy! Uh, I was just-"
"Asking you to dinner!" Jack jumped in. "He was just asking you to dinner. Tonight. After work."
"Hey, you wanna butt the hell out?" asked Daniel, whirling on Thompson with a glare. Jack held up his hands in surrender, and after a minute, Sousa turned back to Peggy with a nervous smile. "Do me a favor and pretend Thompson's not here?"
Peggy nodded, a small smile on her face.
"Great. Peggy, would you like to go to dinner with me tonight?"
"As a date?" asked Peggy, the smile slowly growing on her face. Daniel took a deep breath, and he managed to look her in the eye with a confident smile when he responded.
"Yes. On a date."
Now the smile fully took over Peggy's face as she looked at Daniel.
"I would absolutely love to."
Daniel grinned right back at her, not quite believing she'd really said yes. He took a few steps toward her, stopping in front of her with a lovestruck expression on his face, but before he could say anything else Jack beat him to the punch.
"Great! Glad we finally go to the first date. It's been a long, torturous process to get here. Now get the hell out of my office," he said, moving to sit back behind his desk without glancing at the new couple. He still had work to do tonight before he went home, so the sooner these two left, the better.
He heard Peggy and Daniel muttering as she took his arm and they headed back into the bullpen. Jack was careful not to look up until he was sure their backs were turned to him, but once he knew they weren't looking, he couldn't help but watch them leave with a smile.
He'd never admit it out loud, but Sousa and Carter were his two best friends. It was nice to finally see them happy.
