My Favorite Reads of 2018
My Favorite Reads of 2018
Tumblr media
I thought coming up with my favorite reads of 2018 would be difficult. For the past five months or so I’ve had a hard time concentrating on reading, and it felt like I read few books that were especially noteworthy or good this year. Going through my Goodreads list to write this post, I realized that all my favorite books were front-loaded into the first half of the year. Not sure why that is,…

So, with Rowling at it again (I don’t think she can make any arguments any more), let’s start a thread of good YA authors to read instead.
I’ll start:
Henry Lien - wrote the Peasprout Chen series, which is Taiwanese Harry Potter. ON SKATES.
Tomi Adeyemi - amazing YA afrofantasy.
Yoon Ha Lee, in addition to his stellar adult work, wrote the YA novel Dragon Pearl which is just plain awesome.
It’s not one of my favorites, but Naomi Kritzer won a major award for Catfishing on CatNet.
Fran Wilde’s Riverland is also very popular.
Holly Black has been pretty good lately.
Nnedi Okorafor is better known for her adult novellas, but also wrote Akata Warrior, which won the Lodestar in 2018.
Go!

I love Peasprout Chen, Future Legend of Skate and Sword! @henrylienauthor invented a martial art crossed with figure skating and it's the BEST. Peasprout deserves more than this scribble, but i've given up on doing any quality work in this wretched weather.

Top Ten-and-a-Half (AKA 15) Things I Read in 2018
In chronological order…
Chainbreaker by Tara Sim - This sequel balanced action, worldbuilding, and character development. It’s an exciting historical fantasy with commentary on oppression, identity, and resistance.
The Broken Earth Trilogy by N. K. Jemisin - I read all three early in the year. Incredible. It was initially difficult to get into, but it was worth it for what it had to say about resilience, trauma, hope, and the complexities of love.
An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon - Brutal book. It is imaginative science fiction, social commentary, a murder mystery, and a neat study in worldbuilding. Looking forward to their next book this year.
The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo - Fairy tales that reflect both the Grisha Verse and our world. Sara Kipin’s illustrations are beautiful and add dimensions. The margin art grows and changes over the course of each story, culminating in a lovely two-page spread. The one for “Little Knife” (the top picture of this post) was particularly arresting.
Peasprout Chen: Future Legend of Skate and Sword by Henry Lien - Inventive and unique with a neat twist.
Circe by Madeline Miller - If pressed, this would be my favourite book released in 2018. The prose is gorgeous. It’s a thoughtful retelling with neat interpretations of mythological characters. That ending. Wow.
Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi - “Now Aru understood why Mini was so hesitant about everything. Not once had Mini been taught that to think she was supposed to be the hero.” This was wonderful and something I wish I had been able to read as a kid. What’s not to love about a book that has an actual Fantasy Costco? Aru was a great protagonist and I loved her interactions with Mini. I definitely want more about their families in the sequel.
Jade City by Fonda Lee - My goodness. This was such a compelling world with flawed, interesting characters. The East-meets-West gangster story in a 20th century setting was so fresh. It’s very reminiscent of the post-WWII economic boom with touches of the Cold War. Great visceral action scenes. I laughed, I cried, I put the sequel on my 2019 TBR.
The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories by Ken Liu - I heard the eponymous story on LeVar Burton Reads, which left me teary-eyed during a walk with my dog. Short story collections can really highlight an author’s wheelhouse. This revealed to me that Ken Liu can try his hand at anything and make it polished and unique. From futuristic crime thriller to steampunk fantasy to historical fiction to magical realism to alt-history. It’s like walking through a series of wildly different, but well-constructed, rooms.
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas - Wow. Sensitively drawn with memorable characters. So much has been written about this YA juggernaut.
Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett - The highlight of this compelling fantasy is its solid magic system. The characters, especially our heroine Sancia, felt real and the story has an interesting way of talking about the commodification of people. It was a real page turner and I’m looking forward to the sequel.
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson - This is a classic for a reason. The chilling reversal of the haunted house story was perfect for October.
Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers - Her books just make me happy. The previous books in the Wayfarers series focused on a space opera world with many different species coexisting. They were cozy, character-driven, and a bit freeform. This one departs from that multi-species coexistence and focuses almost exclusively on the Exodus Fleet, the humans that have not integrated into GC society at large and remain on their generation ships. It’s all about the highs and lows of communal living.
The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Le Guin - Classic Science Fiction with a focus on alternate universes and what is paved with good intentions.
