wordle 9/10
here’s 9/3 & 9/9!
wish my pain was as pretty as a glittering pearl
could be plucked like a petal, blown away in the breeze
i’d be scared to see it go, cause who would i be then?
too afraid of the cure, rather die from disease
wolves running feral, beneath the full moon
i’ll be the moss on an oak, cause i’m running too
make me a smooth stone, slowly carved by a stream
my body’s storm clouds & snow, oh can’t a girl dream?
i want to rebel
promise me you’ll never tell
they all have expectations
easier to stay locked in my cell

Howdy Howdy, it’s ya favorite slug
Okay, ocs, here we go
Starting with the first ones I’ve made
Rocker
Tumblr media
(Warning, a lot of these are gonna feature a lot of old art—)
Rocker is the loud, proud, smart mouthed second in command of the Basement puppets.
Their flirty and quick to anger, they often fight a lot with their leader, “The Mistress”, and are very protective of the mini rinas
Speaking of…
The Mini-Rinas
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In order, their names are mini-rina prime, also knowned as prina. Mini-rina 2, 3 and rebel-rina, formerly known as mini-rina 4
There’s not much to say about them, their the students of The Mistress, their often over worked and only get a small break when the mistresses under study takes over watching them when the mistress is resting
Pearl
Tumblr media
The nervous understudy of the mistress, she’s in charge of making sure everything is up to the mistresses Standards, taking care of the other basement puppets, and making sure a certain doctor is still alive and well…
The Mistress
Tumblr media
To sum her up, she’s basically a gender bent Mortimer. She’s strict and meticulous, is something doesn’t go Exactly as she plans, she won’t hesitate to lash out with her whip. Hell, there are some days where she gives daisy danger a run for her money with her explosive temper.
Now, onto the aus. Or, au Singular i suppose
The SugarCrash au! (Hey, see, I told y’all I’d make that post explaining what it’s about!)
Starting with the one and only, SugarCrash Mortimer Handee
Tumblr media
Mortimer handee was one of the first puppets to be brought to life by the famous, (or rather, in-famous, depending on who you ask) Owen Gubberson. Unlike the Mortimer your familiar with, when the handeeman were brought to life, they were given their own bodies, much to Owen’s surprise.
This Mortimer is a lot more, let’s say, slick, than cannon Mortimer. This Mortimer is an entertainer through and through, he’s dapper, cunning and a big smooth talker. However don’t let this side of him fool you, he can be just as cruel, if not more so, than cannon. There are some days where even the fearless Daisy Danger worries for her well being when he’s upset. Unfortunately, no one (for now) knows this side of him.
Riley Athen Ruckus
Tumblr media
Riley ruckus, The resident scientist and now newly discovered Promising artist, this Riley is a bit more, braggy, I suppose? Than the one we know, Dr ruckus will take every opportunity to gloat about the achievements of the handeeman and how far their once humble little studio has come, now known by local’s as the “Real Life handee manor”, thanks to both the magic of Mortimers spell book and her (as well as nicks, but she’ll never admit this-) own creative genius. And just so happens to be the one who got their old show rebooted with one phone call❤️ (much to Rachael’s surprise and anger-)
Daisy Danger
Tumblr media
Daisy Danger, resident mom to all employees and ragdolls, and one hell of a magic cook and baker, daisy is by far one of the sweetest puppets you’ll ever meet. That is, if you don’t get on her nerves- As we all know, daisy is Quite well known for her “Danger Mode”, but what everyone didn’t know, was how damn destructive she can get during what the main four refer to as, a “SugarCrash”. Like it’s been implied, when a puppet enters a SugarCrash, they get incredibly more dangerous than they were before. Basically, it’s danger mode on steroids, and not only that, one’s body changes into a more monstrous, almost feral like form. God only knows what daisy’s SugarCrash’s look like…
Dr. Paddywack, aka nick nack
(Sorry you guys get no visual reference right now, I’ve hit the image limit-)
Dr. Paddywack, formerly known as nick nack, Is still the resident artist of the handeeman crew, but has now gained an appreciation for science and technology. Nick is still the same old nick we all know and love, he’s creative, dramatic, and jus a tiny bit egotistical, except this nick seems a bit more… jumpy, let’s say, than regular nick. He’s just a tad bit more reserved than cannon, and. Something about the way the ragdolls tend to avoid his path seems… odd. (>;])
That’s all for now, you can also send the ragdoll assistants asks but I’m too tired to write a bio for them right now, bye—

My current thoughts re: What Everyone is Doing
Dogwarts:
Ren is the king. Is probably some kind of werewolf, and absolutely is doing ill-advised research of the magical variety.
Martyn survived the Watchers as a youngun, tried to commit crime against Ren at one point and got hired instead and then rapidly promoted and now they are Concerningly Codependent
Gem is the relatively new commander of the Red Army. She and Pearl are old friends with a long history, though they hadn't seen each other in a few years before Thing Start Happening.
Skizz is Ren's bannerman and Gem's second in command. He's usually with Ren and Martyn.
Etho was just a dude with a title and a fief on the border with the Crastle who, when shit hit the fan, ended up on the Renchanting side of things. He's very pragmatic about it but also his house has been burned down like twice.
Bigb is also a Watcher survivor, but its very unclear how he ended up here or what his motives are. He was passing through, things started happening and he decided he might as well.
Crastle:
Cleo and Bdubs are co-rulers and married. Exact nature of the marriage is wildly unclear and they don't really care enough to make it less so. They both have the title of King, though Bdubs likes to refer to himself as the Lord of the Crastle.
Tango was Etho's neighbor just on the other side of the border. He ended up with the Crastle in much the same way that Etho ended up with Dogwarts.
Impulse made a strong effort at playing both sides but when the chips are down en media res he ends up officially siding with the crastle. He's a weaponsmith and armed most of the major players in both these camps, and also Scar by proxy because most of Scar's gear is stuff he got from the others.
The Desert:
Scar has a title of some sort but no one is quite sure what it is. He never uses it. He’s an instigator and initially is really just in it to mess with people. It escalates, as things tend to do. (Martyn is the only one to actually consider him a threat for quite some time) He’s suspected to be fae in some way, but no one is sure exactly.
Grian is a mystery. No one is really sure who he is or where he came from, he just showed up at Scar’s side one day and things escalated quickly after that. (Some of them clearly have a history with him, its what happened between that history and the present that really matters though)
Free Agents (most of them will end up allied with the crastle desert faction)
Joel and his pack live on the border between Dogwarts and The Crastle. He is widely regarded as feral and a loose canon. Prior to Shit Going Down he spent most of his time harassing the flower valley
Pearl and her pack live in the wilderness between The Desert and The Crastle. She is also widely regarded as feral and a loose canon. She is a bit more social than Joel, checking in at the Crastle, Flower Valley, and even, it is rumored, The Desert on a regular basis. She and Gem havent been able to meet up in a long while.
Jimmy and Scott live in the flower valley, a little farm on one end, just far enough away from the village at the other that they are properly isolated. Jimmy is a Watcher survivor and opted to, like Pearl, rebel via leaving the environments he was trained for. Whereas Pearl took up with her wolf pack, Jimmy ended up building a little farm. Scott is some kind of fae and the primary potion brewer outside of Dogwarts.
Mumbo is just vibing i don’t know. I’ve still got nothing.
Lizzie is a fae who lives further afield and isn’t directly involved in the main storyline though she has a past with Cleo and Bigb and possibly also Ren himself that is referenced regularly.
-
The Crastle and Desert start out as two separate factions, and whether or not they actually unite is going to depend on how canon-based this is. (Basically, if Cleo lives, they remain separate, if Cleo dies than Scar and Grian swoop in as in canon and take control)
Okay so the thing about the We Who Watch AU (name not set in stone) is that its more of an "inspired by" au instead of a canon divergence au, like 4Gs, which means i don't have to go back and watch several episodes multiple times.
But also because its not actually a canon au, i have to decide how i want it to end and i am ConflictedTM
Because on the one hand I can go with nothing is beautiful, everything hurts, and everyone dies, which is the closest to canon. I can go with no one dies and everyone walks away at the end. Or an in-between point where some people die and some survive and no one is the same.
No matter what I do it is going to hurt emotionally.

Harry Styles
Harry Styles’s evolution from a Simon Cowell-farmed boyband cash cow of pop to generation Z’s premier gender iconoclast is perhaps the most pleasing twist of 21st-century pop culture to date. This year, he has changed the rules of dressing up for men: why be hemmed in to the tired old tropes of the tuxedo (for suave) or leather jacket (for rebels) when you can be both, in a pearl necklace and a pretty lace blouse, as seen on Styles at the Brits? Or in a Gucci chiffon gown, on the cover of Vogue? Last month, the V&A museum announced that it had acquired for its permanent collection the JW Anderson patchwork cardigan that Styles made a TikTok sensation. Harry 1 Toxic Masculinity 0. JCM

Wow, I learned I have alot of other angelkin followers today :0 but YAY! I've been summoned for one of these! I'll try to be close as possible but some questions probably won't fit bc I'm a little funky.
bird like wings or wings made of nature (fire, thunder, light)
halos or horns
warrior or scribe (was more what I guess you would consider a servant but warrior is closer then scribe)
gardens or clouds
singing or playing
armor or soft linen
sword or quill (?) (Wasn't really either, was much more "feral" in nature. Ie claws, teeth, etc)
heaven or earth (I always appreciated both, though I suppose I perfer earth now)
god or gods
pearls or gold
human form or true nature (this one's also a bit complicated, I typically was more humanoid, but also frequently shifted further to Animalistic forms)
possessing a vessel or being born with it
creating life or destroying life (mostly for balance. Honestly may or may not have completely understood the whole "human" thing. Still kinda don't)
church or altar at home
worship or be worshipped
pray or answer prayers (neither, I wasn't involved in that aspect.)
rebel or remain (I don't really remember/comprehend fully what it was like there. So I don't have a stance here.)
All done!!! Sorry if I answered any wrong lol, also I wasn't 100% sure who all I remembered was good with tagging, so if I accidentally tag someone who doesn't like these I'm really sorry!!!
@wingedarchivist @emersonsdead @delicateforestry
tag game this or that. angelkin edition

I pity Xue Yang don't get me wrong I think he absolutely earned his ending, but he was a teenager (at least in the novel). A child that had not finished growing mentally when he committed his first crime and it's possible with the right kind of support he could have seen the error of what he did and came back from it but that's wishful thinking. He met the Jin clan who turned him into their personal killing machine, a text book psychopath. What a short pitiful life.
Hello, Anon! Since I wasn’t sure what inspired this ask, I've been mulling over it for awhile, because Xue Yang! Gotta admit, I enjoy him immensely as an antagonist even though I have a tangle of feelings and thoughts about him. So I’m going to try to iron some of them out since you brought him up!
Short version is I agree with you! Which makes me want to tread through why it is true. (And it’s a long tread so fair warning for under the cut!)
Because it was indeed a short, pitiful life. But then, he was perhaps the most pitiful character in the series. I'm hesitant to write any characters off as psychopaths, however, since this is fiction and that undermines his experiences and choices and the story he is meant to help tell.
Xue Yang was an an orphan growing up on the street. No parents, no money, no goals in life, no purpose in life. Already a very depressing start made worse by how incredibly self-aware Xue Yang is of his situation when he tells his story. Considering Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Xue Yang isn’t looking any higher than the floor.
And then he was seven years old when he was used and abused by adults in positions of power. No one came to save him like Jiang FengMian did Wei WuXian. He has no one like Meng Shi who wanted nice things for him or a woman like SiSi who looked out for him like they did for Jin GuangYao. Xue Yang had only himself, so it makes sense that he grew up to only care about and understand himself--and by the time he makes a “home” with Xiao XingChen and A-Qing, he’s too far gone to mend his ways without serious intervention.
An intervention, absolution, or redemption might all indeed be wishful thinking, if only because that is a work of labor and love. Either someone needs to find value in Xue Yang as a person worth redeeming or Xue Yang needs to find a sense of security and self-confidence in himself that precludes the need to do murder from some point onward. Xue Yang has been ruined and ruined himself to such a degree that surely any attempt to “save” him would come across as an insult, would make him feel inferior, and might just make him more aggressive.
Sadly, even though he did very horrible things, monstrous things, the tragedy is that he was encouraged and empowered and effectively trained to do them. Before he was picked up by the Lanling Jin Sect, he was just an angry delinquent. He bullied street vendors, destroyed property, made a name for himself with general violence, but there is no hint or insinuation that he killed people yet. That happened later. That happened after he met Jin GuangYao. And we know Xue Yang wasn’t thought irredeemable when he first joined the Jin because of Nie MingJue:
Nie MingJue frowned, “Xue Yang of Kuizhou?”
Jin GuangYao nodded. Xue Yang had been infamous ever since he was young. Wei WuXian clearly felt Nie MingJue’s brows knit even tighter. He spoke, “Why are you wasting your time with such a person?”
Jin GuangYao, “The LanlingJin Sect recruited him.”
He didn’t dare to protest any further. Excuse being that he needed to care for the guests, he scurried to the other side. Nie MingJue shook his head and turned around.
(Ch. 49, Exiled Rebel Scanlations)
Nie MingJue lets it drop. Nie MingJue is ready to see Xue Yang executed on the spot when his mass murder crimes come out, but not now. Xue Yang is a concern, but so was Jin GuangYao. Nie MingJue is trying to big-brother Jin GuangYao into following the right path, so if the Jin recruited Xue Yang, maybe he, too, is on a better path now. Nie MingJue will realize this isn’t true later, and he’ll pay with his life for being the only one who tries to protect the common folk, which includes all the other innocent Xue Yangs out there who are poor and at risk to harm, but I digress.
Xue Yang still got what was coming to him, but it really was just the pitiful end to a pitiful life. He was treated like a dog, grew up to be feral, was not properly retrained, and then had to be put down. Did he have choices in the matter? Technically yes, but then he’s a still child when the Jin begin to use him.
Jin GuangYao, "Will you be free the next few days?"
Xue Yang, "Won’t I have to do it no matter what?" (Ch. 118)
Xue Yang isn’t unaware of his position on the hierarchy.
He was used by Chang Cian, because there are no consequences for abusing and maiming orphans. There’s some textbook psychology for little Xue Yang from Piaget and Erikson that I won’t get into, but the fact is an expectation as simple as ‘I do a task and get rewarded for the task’ resulted in him being beaten and maimed does a lot of distortion to both expectations in life and self-confidence.
He was used by Jin GuangShan, because he grew into a defensive and spiteful teenager whom people always looked down upon. He’s gone feral, but give a dog a warm bed, clean clothes, protection, and a new toy called the Stygian Tiger Seal to play with, and he won't bite the hand that feeds him.
He can be trained to bite everyone else, too, and definitely he wants to. He’s so quick to feel slighted, to wanting to avenge himself, that even Jin GuangYao, the master of self-pity, takes notice, such as when Xue Yang first meets Xiao XingChen and Song Lan:
Jin GuangYao mused, "They didn’t really do much to you, so why the anger?"
Xue Yang spat, "I find these fake, conceited people the absolute most disgusting. That Xiao XingChen was clearly not even that much older than me, poking his nose into other people’s business—annoying. And he started giving me a lecture. And that Song guy.” He sneered, “I only brushed past his arm, so what was with that look he gave me? Sooner or later, I’ll dig out his eyes and shatter his heart. Let’s see what he’ll do when that happens." (Ch. 118)
This might have grown from the seven year old who was minding his own business, promised candy for a task, and then grievously injured. This is aggressive self-defense. This is ‘I will hurt them before they hurt me.’ He’s looking for threats. Because did he know Chang Cian or the man who received the letter were going to hurt him? No. And he’s making sure no one hurts him ever again.
And yet.
He was used by Jin GuangYao, who understood Xue Yang the best as they walked side-by-side, as Jin GuangYao showed him kindness, gave him advice, offered him everything. Then once Jin GuangYao got what he wanted out of him, once what Jin GuangYao had helped make Xue Yang into was more a liability than a boom, Jin GuangYao told the cultivation world he was getting rid of him.
We aren't told what happened next, but I do have to wonder about the timeline. Xue Yang helped Jin GuangYao murder Jin GuangShan, Jin GuangYao announced to the cultivation world he was going to get rid of Xue Yang, then the next we hear about Xue Yang is that he is found, half-dead, on the side of the road by Xiao XingChen. Was Xue Yang one of Jin GuangYao's victims who got away? I wouldn’t be surprised since it fits Jin GuangYao’s methods, but that Xue Yang doesn’t storm the gates in revenge leaves room for doubt. But then a dog that has been severely beaten would know to stay away until he’s recovered, and we know Xue Yang, after he is found by Xiao XingChen, becomes distracted by this new domestic situation instead.
I also want to point out Xue Yang’s courtesy name: Xue Chengmei. I admit i don’t know the full background of when or how these Chinese names are given, but my current assumption is it was given to him by the Jin. The translations I’ve seen include "to help fulfil the wishes of others" (Exiled Rebels Scanlations) and also "help others do good deeds" (from the modao-zushi fandom wiki).
As Jin GuangYao was the one to bring him in, it’s possible that he was the one to explicitly name him. And this, to me, presents Xue Yang in the most pitiful light: Xue Yang was Jin GuangYao’s second pearl to his father. Jin GuangShan wanted a demonic cultivator and Jin GuangYao found what was needed to please him, to try to win him over. Xue Yang was not brought and kept at Koi Tower for self-improvement or self-growth. He was brought in as a useful tool. He was brought in so Jin GuangYao’s wishes could be fulfilled.
So Xue Yang's life is something that is meant to be used by others. It's no wonder he goes absolutely feral and delights in the macabre and abuse of others -- because physical power, the power to hurt, is tthe only power he understands. By the time he leaves Koi Tower he's a rabid dog with no place to belong, beaten once again by a trusted master, and harboring feelings of resentment and hatred in his inferiority. So when Xiao XingChen arrives and helps him, it’s another nice warm bed, new clothes, and new toys to play with in the form of Xiao XingChen and A-Qing's blindness.
But what of interventions? Of teaching him to do better? Remember that Nie MingJue tries to guide Jin GuangYao with good advice at their first meeting, and Xiao XingChen also tries to guide Xue Yang, by advising Jin GuangYao, at their first meeting:
Right after, [Xiao XingChen] turned his gaze towards Xue Yang, "However, even if he’s still at a young age, as he has taken a seat amongst Koi Tower’s guest cultivators, it’s still best if he learns restraint. After all, the LanlingJin Sect is one of the most prestigious sects. It needs to lead by example in many aspects." (Ch. 118)
The Lanling Jin Sect needs to lead by example -- but they don’t. Jin GuangYao has the power to be a good person, but he won’t. And Xue Yang pays for it. Everyone at Yi City suffers for it. Xue Yang doesn’t learn restraint and Jin GuangYao mirrors back what Xue Yang wants to see: someone like him. Jin GuangYao humored his macabre practical jokes. They sentenced innocent people to die together, showed their true faces to each other, and committed a most horrific fratricide together. Xue Yang was having fun, he was feeling powerful, and he didn’t feel like he had to stop when he met Xiao XingChen, whom he hated at first horsewhip-lash. Xiao XingChen can’t look down on him if Xiao XingChen is brought down to his level. It’s only a human tongue in that tea. It’s only Shuanghua in some dude’s chest. It’s hilarious, Xiao XingChen, you should see your face!
It’s nothing more than a child playing with a toy. Of course Xue Yang would end up destroying the one good thing he accidentally stumbled upon. Jin GuangYao had showed him kindness too, and looked how that turned. No one had ever done something out of charity and kindness for him, so how was he supposed to recognize it for what it was? The answer is he couldn’t, it was impossible, and then he spent the next ~7 years trying to get Xiao XingChen back and still it was for all the wrong reasons. Does he hate? Does he want? Is it love? Is it spite?
But Xiao XingChen had bandaged his wounds when no one else had. Xiao XingChen had given him the candy no one else had.
The last piece of candy Xue Yang held onto for all those years without eating...
A short, pitiful life indeed.

Alone but Found

On a visit to the Prime Kindergarten, Garnet makes an improbable discovery
Periodically, the Red Eyes entered the atmosphere and scanned across the surface of the globe, scouting for survivors following the Gem Song. They were easy to avoid, but their presence was unnerving and at times appeared when it was inconvenient. Even for someone who could anticipate where the vessels would descend to.
Garnet wondered if they could recognize the corrupted gems as gem-kind. There was a scenario yet where one of the scout vessels encountered and scanned one of the feral gem creatures. The closest she’d envisioned was a Red Eye coming too near a massive gem creature, the irate beast swatted down the vessel and pummeled it into nonexistence.
This scenario did come to pass, but nothing of Home World’s reaction came of it. No more and no less of the searching vessels piloted across the globe, collecting information on the state of rebel camps, abandoned weapon forges, and deserted temples. Vessels remotely controlled, on a scripted course to gather intel on decimation. It was evidence of how little Home World viewed the state of the planet, but there was comfort in this projected indifference.
The prime kindergarten was a husk of life, drained entirely of minerals and vitality. Garnet was only there to check if the injectors remained dormant and take stock of subterranean facilities. The Red Eye drifted down from the stratosphere – this she predicted. For the barest of moments, she fretted it was present to reactive injectors, though pointless that would be. Home World was not above creating incomplete gems to meet production goals, if the Beta Kindergarten was a fallback example of Home Worlds priorities.
She didn’t need future vision to see how she could evade the vessel. Its actions were choreographed, easy to follow. The craft was in the way, however, and made mobility constrained. Attracted to movement, it would seek out spirals of dust or rocks crumbling from the parched cliff face. She remained perched on the injectors bulb, several meters above the canyon floor, far out of range.
It does see something, though. Some action or deliberate interaction caused it to divert course. And activate. What does it see? That she cannot tell. It couldn’t be Spinel, the gem was off escorting Rose Quartz today. This change in rail-scouting was baffling, and alarming.
Garnet leapt off the injector and used the holes in the cliff side to give pursuit, with caution on the wind. The Red Eye was doing its own thing, distracted by clusters of boulders and the splint pieces of an injector embedded under debris.
Movement flashed below, not more than a meter off from the Red Eye. Movement. Not a stray breeze, not rocks tumbling. Something detached from the eroded scenery shuffled towards the rotating vessel.
 Oh! Oh….
Soundlessly, Garnet skidded down the cliff and bolted across open ground. A blur of lilac scuttled among the choppy terrain, entranced by the bright hull of the vessel. Garnet leapt outward and caught the figure before the Red Eye could spin to it and initiate a scan.
“Shh!” She hissed, once they ceased rolling. The creature, or gem, in her arms squirmed and whined. “Hold still!” Garnet stuffed her shoulders back into a narrow crevice, indifferent to the gem gnawing on her knuckles.
The Red Eye swept by, scanning the rocks and dust kicked up by the intervention. It would deem the evidence irrelevant and move on. This Garnet predicted.
She did not predict getting an elbow square to her shades and the gem scampering away. “Wait! Come back!”
Thankfully, the gem squeezed between tight fissures that the Red Eye took no interest in. Unfortunately, Garnet was forced to creep above the ground, barely tracking the bright color of the gems complexion weaving among narrow fractures. She had to avert her attention to assure the Red Eye remained oblivious to the activity, while ducking and rolling behind ruins. Taking chance with the slimmest of scenarios, Garnet snatched up a sizable boulder and chucked beside the revolving craft.
The Red Eye locked onto the location of impact caused by the projectile, and swept over to examine shattered pieces.
Once she caught up with the gem, she called, “It’s too dangerous to be out here alone.”
The gem paid no mind. She escaped the fissures and tore across the winding passages of the kindergarten. At least she was disinterested in a violent confrontation. “I’m a friend! Where are you going?”
“Where are you going?” echoed back.
That retort nearly made her stop and ponder, but the Ruby in her insisted she not stall. She divided her attention through the coursing pathways of possibility, and maintaining sight of the bright flashes of the gems hair against the drab terrain. Overtaking the gem would be simple enough, but she was interested in where the eventual was leading them. Now was not the time to be rash, this was the time to be cautious and patient. She maintained distance, feigning inability to catch up.
The race eventually led into a deep canyon, along where several deep breaks dotted the cliff face. At the base of the vertical wall, the gem dove into an opening.
Garnet eased out of the sprint and closed in on the silhouette. There was only one way the gem could get out.
“Hello?” she called. “Are you in there?”
A pause. Then the voice echoed back. “Are you in there?”
She stayed back from the opening. The gem was not about to bolt again. “You don’t need to be frightened. I won’t hurt you.” No reply. “How long have you been here? Are there others with you?”
 “Are there others with you.”
“Do you know who… you are?”
“Who you are.” The gem would not emerge.
Maybe it was because she was a fusion, and didn’t know how to respond to this. Garnet was burning with questions and curiosity, but every scenario she pursued for answers led to more of the echoing. This was peculiar.
“You’re an Amethyst,” she replied. The voice within the cuvee retained silence. “But all of the Amethyst from this kindergarten were evacuated long ago.” A bit of rustling flittered around inside the hole. “And….” She let her words drain away.
“There are others like me,” she offered, instead. “There are not many of us left, but we’re holding together. You can come with me, if you like?”
“Come with me.” The round face peered out of the entrance, but the gem dared go no further. She gazed at the Garnet, eyes large.
“You’re all alone,” Garnet hummed. “Waiting for someone. For orders, that never reached you. I want you to come with me. You should meet the others.”
“Orders. Amethyst. Alone.” The face ducked back into the hole.
Garnet stood and averted her eyes, scanning where the Red Eye was last hovering. Its scripted movement worried her in no way. The vessel was already ascending towards the crestline of the canyon walls, fading into the haze of silt spiraling on stray gusts.
“If you’re not ready.” Garnet moved back from the hole and crouched beside a larger, more impressive cutout. “Then we can wait. Together. You shouldn’t be alone. No one should ever emerge alone. I’m sorry it’s taken this long, for someone to find you. It shouldn’t have been this way.”
A year and a day later.
An intense storm swept through the region, torrents of water flooded the prime kindergarten. The soil robbed of nutrients, was stony and dense like amber.
Garnet was coated in clay and wet, but she had not budged an inch since she took post outside the small exit point of the Amethyst. Though quiet and patient, not a sound rang from the cuvee, no indication that the Amethyst was still within. But Garnet knew she was there.
Then at long last, the same face peered out at her. Water sloshed around the stout gems limbs as she edged into the downpour, eyes glistening with wonderment.
 “Amethyst. Alone.” She restated.
“Not anymore,” Garnet assured. “You’ll be with others. We’re all different, but we’re all good. You won’t be alone.”
The Amethyst frowned and tilted her head. “You won’t… be alone.”
When they arrived at the Crystal Temple, it looked like an argument was in full steam. Not one of them noticed the light beam travel to the platform and deposit their forms, amidst echoes and mocking barks. Rose Quart’s stood off beside a glittering wall, shaking her head. Spinel was deflated on the floor, pigtails drooped, while Pearl rattled through a tangent about communication arrays and tampering with equipment, or something.
Garnet sighed loudly, effectively catching the attention of each. Varied expressions of shock flashed through the gems.
“I’ve had this Amethyst for a year and two days,” she began. “And I’ve decided, if anything were to happen to her, I’d crack everyone in this room. And then myself.”
The Amethyst beamed and waved. “Hey’all!”
 “Oh my stars!” Pearl gasped.
Spinel poofed in a flash of pink.
“An Amethyst? A miniature Amethyst! She’s so compact and adorable!” Rose rushed to Garnet and knelt to view the gem held in Garnet’s arms. “Where have you been? Where did you come from?”
 “Have you! Where come!”
“Her communication skills… are different.” Garnet explained. She let Rose take the gem from her arms, and hold Amethyst at arm’s length. The Amethyst swayed her feet.
“We’re goin’ to the Crystal Temple Gems!”
“How can we be sure she’s not a spy sent from Home World?” Pearl posed. She plucked Spinel’s gem off the floor and moved closer, to inspect the Amethyst. “Not to question your abilities, Garnet. But…” Her eyes traced their way to the Spinel on her palm.
“Poofed!” crowed Amethyst. She waved her arms out midair, while Rose spun around and around.
“That?” Garnet questioned. “She was at the prime kindergarten, trying to antagonize a Red Eye.” Pearl nearly dropped Spinel. “Well, not really trying. She doesn’t know what they are.”
Rose swept Amethyst to the ground and set her down. “I’m a Rose Quartz,” she stated, to the beholding stare of the small gem. “Do you know what you are?”
 “Amethyst!”
“Why were you waiting in the kindergarten?”
Amethyst shot her shoulders up. “Dunno.”
“How did she survive the attack?” Pearl posed. She set Spinel on a jut of rock, pinned by crystals. “Even on the polar side of the planet’s globe, gem creatures have begun appearing.”
“Unless, she had not formed yet,” Rose poised. The amethyst tugged at her dress end, then began fanning it. “Is that a possibility?”
“That is an astronomically small possibility. It’s the only one I can see.” Garnet moved over and tugged up the Amethyst, before she could crawl under Rose’s dress. “In other words, not a spy.” The Amethyst thrashed in her grip.
“Small possibility! Survive! What is this place?”
“This makes no sense.” Pearl cupped her chin and followed Garnet as she rocked the unruly gem in her arms. “She should know where she is. Her purpose. Why does she keep repeating what we say?” She bolted upright when the gem slapped her. “The nerve!”
“Can’t really say,” Garnet replied. She dropped the Amethyst, the gem not expecting this hit the hard floor and tumbled to her backside. “Go run off now. Explore.”
“WHOOOO!” Amethyst ran off towards the opening of the cavern and the beach outside.
“The corruption song,” Rose murmured. “Maybe she didn’t survive the effects.”
“Or,” Garnet posed, “if she emerged late, as you suspect, there was a problem with the injection. Either way, it doesn’t matter to speculate. I don’t imagine Home World would have much use for an Amethyst of her stature. Ah, and she has an intriguing aptitude for shape shifting.”
The Amethyst was running by along the seashore, and Garnet called out for her. “Show them your thing!”
As requested, the Amethyst leapt high and reformed her shape. In a flash, she was a roaming vessel glaring into the cave. For a brief spell, Pearl and Rose Quartz became alarmed, springing into a formation for defense. The shape was convincing, even if the color was all wrong. And Red Eye’s didn’t have two large eyeballs adorning their slopping sides. This one, too, could not stay airborne for more than a second before it crashed into the sand. The Amethyst resumed her normal shape, and spat out a wad of sand.
“That was amazing, Little Amethyst!” Rose rushed down the steps. “Can you do gems? Do Pearl!”
 “Why me?”
 “How about humans?”

Pearlified (Amethyst, brainwashing, MC, identity death)
It was the right decision. She knew it, they knew it. Amethyst didn't regret her decision for a moment. Her friends were safe, and one of Yellow Diamond's largest battlecruisers was floating stricken in space with a reactor core sporting an Amethyst-sized hole.
She had to laugh. She shouldn't have even survived that explosion. But here she was, months later, on trial on the angry space giraffe's nearest colony.
What else could she do but mock them at every turn? Constantly shapeshifting into the prosecuting zircon, or the emerald presiding. The topaz guards would slap her down each time, try to torture her into silence with those disrupters... but it was pointless, she'd already won. They knew that, and they hated her for it.
"This court is satisfied that the accused is beyond ANY doubt," the emerald glared at her "not only guilty, but absolutely insufferable in her rebellion against her betters."
"YAWN!!!" Amy yelled loudly before being struck to the floor by the guard to her left.
"HOWEVER..." the judge continued, "let it never be said that the perfect justice of the diamonds is a justice devoid of mercy or concern. We recognize that this amethyst was left behind on a hostile, primitive planet, with only savage natives and TRAITORS to shape her."
Amethyst glared and yelled. "ROSE QUARTZ WAS TWICE THE GEM YOU'LL EVER BE! AUGH!!!" She yelped in pain as a disrupter was jabbed deep into her physical form.
"As such..." The emerald rose, and the rest of the court, save Amethyst, followed. "The accused will be reprocessed and allowed to return to a productive life in service to the Diamonds. Sentence will be carried out immediately. This court is now adjourned."
Amethyst was, perhaps for the first time, lost for words. She couldn't even manage a final shout of defiance as she pulled inside a topaz fusion and carried from the courtroom. Reprocessed? What even was that? She was supposed to get shattered! That's what Homeworld DOES to gems they don't like! She could only ponder her fate as she was carried to a warp pad, only her eyes and hair protruding from the imprisoning fusion.
Where were they taking her? It was a short trip in any case, the warp pad quickly depositing them in a dark room. Glowing white pods lined the walls, and large tanks of milky liquid formed a central pillar. Will little fanfare the topazes unfused, grabbing Amethyst by the arms and dragging her toward an open pod.
"HEY! Let me go you big yellow jerks!" Amy hissed.
The topazes smiled at each other a moment, before obliging the overcooked quartz, throwing her violently into the pod's maw. It shut quickly, locking her inside as she groaned in pain. She could hardly react as robotic shackles grabbed her wrists and ankles. She grunted and tried to struggle, blasting the grinning topazes with every obscenity she could muster, hardly noticing as a sharp hammer lowered from the top of the pod. Her yelling stopped when she heard a crack. And looked down. At the hammer that had just put an agonizingly deep crack through her gem.
"Crapbaskets..." was all she could muster before she poofed.
The machine bubbled her instantly, holding her gem floating in the pod. The topazes wandered off as the machine began its work in earnest. The tanks and pipes hummed to life, as the pod began to fill with the milky liquid. The bubble faded as the pod filled, leaving the crystal gem to float, as the fluid began seeping deep into the crack in her gem, and then penetrating deeper into her being…
"Wake up, 8XM."
Amethyst groaned. Her head throbbed as she struggled to open her eyes.
She wasn’t in the pod, as far as she could tell. Looking around, in fact, it didn’t look like she was anywhere… just some empty, white void as far as she could see.
Well, save for one thing.
"Hello 8XM." A pearl was standing in front of her. Slim, delicate, graceful, like all of her kind. But this one Amy was immediately unsettled. This pearl had her colors, her purples and lavenders. This pearl had her wild, curly hair, falling over her left eye, and hangin just below her tush. She even wore a perversion of Amethyst’s clothes: her off-the-shoulder dress looking like it had been painted onto the pearl’s torso, save for where it flaired at the shoulders and waist into delicate transparent whisps of loose material.
"Wha… who the heck are you?" The earthling glared accusingly as the strange pearl smiled.
"Who am I? Well, I’m you, I suppose is the most direct answer!"
"Hah, you WISH." the quartz grumbled.
"Hmm... Well, to be more correct, I’m the you you’re going to be." She leant down and pressed a finger to Amethyst’s lips before the rebel gem could interrupt. "I know, that sounds scary, right? A strange pearl saying you’re going to turn into her? You’re trying to be so brave, but I frighten you." She stared straight into Amy’s eyes. "Yes, I know you are. I can feel it."
Amethyst shivered at that. And try as she might, she found she couldn’t interrupt now. The finger left her mouth, and opened to scream obscenities and threats... yet, no words could be found. And so she watched a growing existential terror as the pearl continued.
"Do you remember the pod?" the pearl asked as she sat cross-legged in front of Amy.
Amethyst felt a gentle calmness wash over her. Not crushing, but enough to lift from from her lying position to find herself mirroring the pearl’s posture. "I guess so?"
The pearl nodded sagely. "Your gem was cracked so that I could be introduced. I’m inside of you 8XM, and you are inside of me."
Amethyst stared in confusion. "But... but why? I thought I was going to be shattered. This doesn’t make any sense."
The pearl leaned forward and took Amy’s hand in hers tenderly. "You’re not being punished, 8XM. You’re being given a gift."
Amethyst gave a skeptical look.
"You are being given a second chance, 8XM. An entirely new life. The kind of life you should have been given in the first place. You were left behind, 8XM. I know how hard that was for you, to emerge alone, without guidance. You were so alone, so frightened."
"I wasn’t that scared..." Amethyst protested, but even as those words left her mouth, they felt less true, somehow. She winced and shook her head, something didn’t feel right at all.
"Yes, yes you were. That’s why you bonded with the only gems you could find. You didn’t know they were murderers and traitors. What you did wasn’t your fault."
The pearl’s words were insidious, as though each statement was reaching inside Amy’s mind and scooping out a piece of herself. "No... no, they’re my friends, I love them!" she protested, tears beginning to pool as each loose thread of her mind was tugged.
"They couldn’t give you what you needed, though, could they? You needed order, and they never gave that to you... allowed you to run feral, to live in filth... you had to try to make your own purpose, because they’d taken away everything that was supposed to give you your place in life."
"N-no… that’s not true…"
The pearl scooted around behind Amethyst, wrapping her arms around the overcooked quartz in a protective embrace, nuzzling softly into her hair. "All gems need a purpose, 8XM... we exist to serve, it’s the only reason we’re made."
"I... I…" Amethyst choked out, staring up in absolute desperation as she tried to cling to unravelling memories. All the good times with Rose, with Pearl, with Garnet, and with Steven, turning into hollow moments of longing for structure and direction. A happy life turning into one of sorrow and depression.
"I can feel it... that craving for certainty, for order. You want a purpose, don’t you 8XM? Something real to fight for? Fight with me, 8XM. Fight for a better Homeworld. A Homeworld that is safe and orderly. Let your fight be one of quiet, dedicated service." Amethyst shivered as the pearls words dripped like honey into her ears. "That's it, doesn't that feel better? To know your purpose, your place? The certainty of order and structure. Pearls are an essential part of the order, we all work to the same goal, the same end, the same order and perfection. As a pearl you are perfect. As a pearl you belong. As a pearl you have a purpose."
"I... I belong." Amy closed her eyes, peacefully. Her body glowed reforming, her gem disappearing into the white glow, until she reformed. Two perfect copies of a long-hair purple pearl now sat, tenderly hugging each other, smiling through their shared tears.
"T-thank you..." the newly-formed pearl choked out.
The pod opened with a hiss as a newly-minted pearl emerged. Full of new life and energy, she gracefully stepped down, and admired herself in the mirrored surface of the tank. Her body and face, she shared with other pearls perfectly. They were all cultured from the same material, after all, and the last thing this new pearl wanted was to be different. She sighed in relief as she saw her gem: a pearl, perfectly formed, sunk into her chest. She thought for a moment, that this was strange, that another gem should be there... but she couldn’t remember what it was, or how it looked. She closed her eyes and shook off the thought, the vague pain and sadness banished to the edges of her mind, and growing ever more distant. She gazed at her face a moment more. What was her name? She had one once, didn’t she? Or, no, maybe a designation?
No... no, of course not. She was a pearl, cultured like all the others. Made to serve. She felt a warmth swell within her at just the idea of serving those placed above her.
With a quick twirl, she made her way through the door marked "PROCESSING". Soon, she hoped, she’d be assigned to a noble gem, and at last, she’d truly belong.
She couldn’t help but squee and smile at the thought.

For request night... maybe a side AU off of your gem au where somebody gets corrupted? (Or, if you're feeling a more happy thing, a Casey/Donnie (and April?) fusion?)
(friend you should know better than to suggest sad things to me, lmao.)
The change is fast and horrifying.
They should never have messed with the gem tech they’dfound- should never have even gone nearit- and now they were paying dearly for not listening to caution.
Donnie is the one they as have inspect new technology, always the one to carefully pull things apart to understand them-
-always the one who goes straight for the heart of machines, curious and just wanting to know-
-and April wishes they hadn’t let him do that this time.
The orb falls to the ground, the eerily bright light that’dbeen held within it dissipating now that it’s moved on. Moved on to Donnie’sgem, which glows and shines in a way that’s wrong.
There’s a sickening crack, and Donnie screams.
“No-!” Caseyyells, diving for Donnie as he folds. He grabs Donnie as the pearl falls, andhe casts a panicking look at April. It’s just the three of them here, separatedfrom the main group to explore more downed ships than they would as a whole. It’s just the three of them and April is wishing it wasn’t.
Donnie screams again, and his body changes.
April is running towards them as it happens, only to beknocked off her feet as Casey’s skinny self is thrown into her. She wrestlesher friend off her, just in time to see Donnie’s back arch and tear itselfapart.
Donnie is making harsh, agonized sounds, hands scrabbling onthe floor of the ship. The long whipping thing that emerges from him extendsfrom his back and across the floor, snapping around wildly as his legs crackand shift into new shapes. His beautiful skirt and shoes are torn apart asthose things happen, and his fingers start leaving gouges in the floor.
April can’t get up fast enough- they’re already too late, she knows this- and meets Donnie’sterrified eyes through his hair, one last time before they’re swallowed by red.
Donnie’s face twists- elongates- snarls ripping out of histhroat as needle sharp teeth grow in his mouth. His lithe body gets larger, growing as his hands and feet sprout claws.
“Oh no,” April whispers, barely audible through Donnie’sguttural cries.
“Shit,” Caseybreathes, clutching April’s arm as they rise together.
Donnie- or the thing that had been him- tosses the hair thatnow grows long and thick all along its spine. It’s bigger than them both, longwinding tail whipping around as it paces the room. It’s long and it’s fastlooking and while it used to be her closest friend- all April can see at themoment is a corrupted monster.
She hasn’t seen anything like this since her enlistment tothe gem armada. She saw it- once- when a collection of soldiers had decidedthey were rebelling against the diamond authority. April had been ordered tosubdue them- wind her powers into their minds and bring them back undercontrol- but she hadn’t been strong enough.
So the diamonds sent their song, and destroyed every gem inthe outpost. The corrupted monsters were left to their fates, and that’s allApril can see, looking at what her friend has become. A failure a second time, and one she won’t let happen.
“Call the others,” April whispers, careful not to make anysudden moves in front of the creature prowling the room. “I’ll hold him off.”
Casey tightens his grip on her. “April- wait, that’s still-”
“I know,” April says, feeling a swell of grief. “But I haveto.”
The corrupted gem turns its head towards them, its gemglinting starkly against its nearly black skin, the purple darkened beyondrecognition. April can barely see Donnie’s eyes through the long hair, but shecatches glimpses of red anyways. It’s watching them, curious and wondering. Shecan’t tell if there’s anything predatory to that, or if it’s her friend shiningthrough.
April hears Casey back away, giving her one last comfortingsqueeze as he does. The door to the ship they’re in slides open, and a gust offresh air blows through as Casey runs for help. Then it’s just April, staringdown someone who’s always been taller than her, and now towers even more so.Donnie is watching April, tilting his head this way and that as he eyes her.April takes a deep breath, and unfolds the pocket of power she holds insideher.
“Hey, Donnie,” She says quietly, stepping forwardscarefully. She keeps her body posture minimally threatening, minding each stepshe takes. “Can you understand me?”
Donnie makes a clicking sound deep in his throat, raisinghis long neck slowly as he looks down at April. He’s examining her, and she can’ttell if his eyes hold any flicker of recognition.
“That’s what I thought,” April whispers sadly. She unfurlsthe bloom of energy she has ready, and reaches out to the flickering essence inDonnie’s gem.
Immediately, Donnie jerks; making a trill of confusion anddistress as he backs away from her. He brings one foreleg up to his head, scratching dangerously close to the gem there as he paws unhappily. April keepspushing anyways, adding more strength to the thread of influence she’s using onhim. Donnie whines, then snarls, and backs up against the wall as he fights thecontrol.
April feels horrible for it. She swore to never use thispart of her powers again, and yet, here she is doing so anyways.
For his own good, she reminds herself. If she can keep him still until the others get here, untilthey have backup to deal with what Donnie’s done to himself- maybe she can savethis one, maybe she won’t have to lose yet another person dear to her- not fail this time at something she can’tbear to-
April’s wandering thoughts give room enough for Donnie tosnap the gentle hold she has on him, and burst forwards for attack.
His taloned hand slams her onto the ground, and April flinchesback- closing her eyes as a maw of teeth is opened above her face. Donnie howls, the sound a bizarre shriek withlower staccato rumbles, something that her friend would never make and yet is,loud and cacophonic, right in her faceand aiming teeth at her neck-
-and then Donnie goes quiet. Panting has he crouches overher.
April slowly opens her eyes, unwilling to strike out andactually hurt him- she can’t even imagine that, can’t imagine using herstrength to break him like that- and finds Donnie’s purely red eyes examiningher again. For a beat, she’s confused, and then… she gets it.
He’s not attacking her… because he just wanted her to stophurting him.
Another string of clicking sounds and Donnie twists his headas he looks at her. There’s none of the intelligent, sweetly shy gem she’s cometo know, but it’s not exactly feral monstrosity he’s got in his eyes.
April slowly extracts a hand from under Donnie’s grip, raising her arm so carefully to lightly touch the end of Donnie’s muzzle.
“Donnie?” April asks, frighteningly hopeful.
Donnie makes a trilling croon, and leans into her touch.
April can scarcely believe it, but she extends the slightestbit of her power just to check. Her touch is not to control, but to examineinstead; and what she gets is a thrum of hellohelloAprilhelloyesI’mmeI’mhereas well as hurthurthurtbutfinefinefineyou’reherewe’reherewherehere?
There’s none of the order Donnie usually has, none of theclarity he sees everything with. But it’s still him.
AprilAprilAprilwhycrywhycrying?Donnie wonders loudly, lifting his hand off April’s chest.
April can’t tell where despair and relief start or end, andshe wipes her eyes as she sniffs.
“Shh,” She whispers, and then puts Donnie to sleep.
Casey bursts back into the ship minutes later, with the restof their group in tow. Everyone’s got their weapons out, and Mikey lookshalfway into an attack spin as they screech to a stop.
April sheepishly waves to them all, barely visibly behind Donnie’sprotective curl around her. He barely stirs in the unnatural sleep she guidedhim into, and like this… he’s actually almost cute, as horrifying as what’shappened is.
“Uh…” Leo asks, slowly lowering his twin swords. “What’sgoing on?”
“That’s something I’d to know, too,” Raph echoes, loweringhis own weapons. Mikey nods along fast enough his mane of hair flies wildly;eyes wide and just as confused as the rest of them.
Casey is the only one who approaches the two of them; hishockey stick dissipating as he comes near. He glances between Donnie’s sleepingform and April’s trapped one, showing uncharacteristic worry in his expression, and says, “Is he okay?”
April sighs, and shrugs helplessly. “I don’t know, but…” Shepets the top of Donnie’s head, tracing the edges of his gem and eliciting arumbling purr from the corrupted being. She turns a hopeful look to Casey, toall of them. “But I think he might eventually be.”
(they fix him later don’t worry. donnie is fine once they do.)

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Timeline EXPLAINED!
Once upon a time, a Pokémon named Zoroark and his human partner set out to train Zoroark in the art of illusions. During their journey, the human and Zoroark found a Pokémon named Xatu. Xatu told the duo that there will be a betrayal among the two. As Zoroark transforms into more and more forms, he slowly began to lose his mind as the emotions of the wild Pokémon battle with his own for control, and his faith in humans, and thus his partner, was shaken. The Zoroark witnessed his human partner capture a Gardevoir, which the human striked up a friendship with much more quickly than he did with Zoroark. Jealous of the attention Gardevoir was getting, along with his fractured mental state, Zoroark fled from the group and lead them into a cave. At the end of the cave, the human and Gardevoir met a Pokémon named Ninetales. Curious, the human grabbed one of Ninetales’ tails, causing it to lay a curse on him. In his stead, Gardevoir stepped in and takes the curse. The Zoroark began to fear his human when, seeing his chance, the human abandoned Gardevoir and fled, not knowing that Zoroark feared this same scenario happening to him. Ninetales noticed Zoroark, and asked if he had any business in his cave. When Zoroark responded with a negative, Ninetales banished him. Zoroark realized that the human now has his undivided attention with Gardevoir gone, but he didn’t feel any satisfaction. Along their travels, the two witnessed a horrifying transformations of two Kyurem into Black Kyurem and White Kyurem at the hands of cruel humans. Zoroark was finally driven to hate his human partner after the human attempted to battle the curse out of the two Kyurem instead of simply capturing them. Zoroark watched the human be defeated and fled the scene, becoming just as bad as the evil he’d feared. Zoroark lead the Kyurem to a human town, and solidified his hatred of humanity by taking a perverse glee in watching the Kyurem kill the humans. Zoroark made it his goal to kill every human he possibly could. He managed to transform into a Psychic-type and worm his way into the Kyurems’ minds and convincing them to serve him and call him “The Master.” The three made their way through the world, killing any humans they came across and leveling any and all of their monuments, recruiting as many distrusting or outright hateful Pokémon as they can. Pokémon were manipulated into rebelling against their masters. Eventually, Legendary Pokémon get involved with the incident, that would soon be dubbed “the Great Pokémon Rebellion.” As each Pokémon finds their sides of the Rebellion, the world’s balance is thrown into turmoil, and mystery dungeons begin to crop up en mass. Eventually, the Master’s army’s hatred and bitterness of humans, and the humans’ own hatred of the Rebels, manifested into a force ultimately dubbed the Dark Matter. The Master found the Dark Matter’s core, and convinced it to eliminate humans. The Dark Matter, never intending to go through with the plan the Master had in mind, agreed. The Dark Matter began to enact it’s plan of uprooting the Tree of Life, sending the world catapulting into the sun. A human and their Mew partner attempted to fight against the Dark Matter, but the damage was done, and the Dark Matter was only rendered dormant by their efforts. The world had returned to its orbit, but the Master, infuriated by the Dark Matter’s treason, sent his forces against the human and Mew, refusing to believe that a human could do good or that a Pokémon could be friends with a human, as well as needing a punching bag. The human and Mew, fearful of their fates, fled to a place that lay beyond the reaches of time and space, believed to never return… In response to the crawling chaos that the world had been consumed by, Arceus, the Lake trio, and the Creation trio all worked together in an attempt to quell the Dark Matter’s remaining agents and save the world’s remaining humans. They saw that they’d stepped in too late, watched every remaining human die before their eyes, and lost their will to continue fighting. Eventually, they sent out the truth that all of the humans are dead. The Master, convinced that he had fulfilled his purpose, withdrew and/or released his soldiers and allowed the Pokémon in the world to live in peace, and the memories of the Rebellion faded into mere legend. The Pokémon managed to recoup and build towns ironically similar to human settlements. The mystery dungeons, originally believed to have disappeared after the end of the Rebellion, sprang back up in full force. Dialga and a Celebi crafted the Time Gears and Temporal Tower in an attempt to stop, or at least slow, the flow of the mystery dungeons. This failed, and the world became dependent on these artifacts as a side effect. A few other legendaries, inspired by this, built their own domains and artifacts in the world to see if that could slow down the spread of the mystery dungeons, but these plans failed, too. The Pokémon Exploration Team Federation was founded to create guilds, which were used to train Pokémon to explore and possibly chart patterns in mystery dungeons. One of their most esteemed guilds was the Wigglytuff Guild. Due to its reputation, Pokémon flocked to join the guild and were either rejected outright, gave up on the training, or convinced themselves to pull through. One of the Wigglytuff Guild’s apprentices, Bidoof, met a Mythical Pokémon named Jirachi and wished to have new apprentices at the guild. Unbeknownst to him, this wish had the very sinister consequence of the Master coming out of hiding and taking the form of a Darkrai. Due to a combination his insanity and Darkrai’s powers, the Master came up with a plan to make a dark world for him to rule over. Darkrai attacked Temporal Tower, causing it to collapse and the flow of time to stagnate. A shiny Celebi managed to go through time just enough to find a human who existed during the Rebellion, and yanked them through time to her own. In the dark future, they met a Pokémon named Grovyle. Grovyle explained to the human that he’s searching for the Time Gears in order to prevent the very future they’re in from happening. Grovyle and the human found a strange rock while trying to find Celebi. Grovyle wondered what it could be for, until the human solved the puzzle and put the stone into a Groudon statue. A telepathic voice from the statue then informed them of Celebi’s wherabouts. The duo advanced through the dark world, unknowingly being pursued by a Pokémon named Dusknoir and his six Sableye companions. Eventually, Grovyle and the human encountered Celebi, who informed them of what’s going to happen when they went back in time. Dusknoir and the Sableye caught up to them and attempted to attack, but they escaped through the Passage of Time. This is when the events of Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky happened. We’ll just skip that to save time. Many centuries later, when the events of Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky had become a mere legend, a Pokémon named Lucario discovered another region that had been relatively peaceful since the Rebellion. Unfortunately, Lucario was rather vain and a little narcissistic. So, when the Pokémon questioned him on who he was, where he came from and what he’d done, he greatly exaggerrated the tales. Soon after his stories were over, he asked the Pokémon of the land why they’d hadn’t heard of him and his Team Pearl. That’s when the Pokémon revealed to him that they were ignorant of the Exploration Team Federation, exploration teams, and guilds. Indeed, they only knew of the mystery dungeons and lived in fear of them. But the Pokémon of the new region weren’t just afraid of the mystery dungeons. There had also been the recent rash of natural disasters. Seeking to fix this, Lucario and the rest of his Team Pearl formed the Pokémon Rescue Organization. This organization sought to save Pokémon from the natural disasters and mystery dungeons by funding rescue teams. Unbeknownst to them, all of their theories were wrong. None of the things they’d theorized were to blame for the natural disasters. Indeed, the Gardevoir who was cursed in the place of her human master sensed that the Master was afoot, and had come up with another mad scheme. Realizing what must be done, she went through the spirit realm to find a human who existed during the Rebellion and proposed that she wipe their memories of their life. Due to the Rebellion’s effects on humanity, they agreed. This is when the events of Red/Blue Rescue Team happened. We’ll just skip that. A rough estimate of eight years later, three Pokémon brothers, all named Slowking, discovered a set of areas in a region entirely ignorant of the Rebellion. In truth, this place had thrived as a Pokémon haven, free from the reach of humans for countless eons. One was a beach, another a volcano, the last a grassland. The Slowking brothers started up the Adventure Squad Association, dedicated to exploring this new region. This is when the events of Blazing/Stormy/Light Adventure Squad happened. We’ll skip that. After a good three decades, humans had become nothing but myths. A few Pokémon found a new region, which had the appearance of a society regressing into more animalistic tendencies due to isolation. In order to address this problem, the Pokémon formed the Institue for Doing Innovative Operations and Travels, or IDIOT, whose purpose was to allow these feral Pokémon a chance to see the outside world. They were successful, so IDIOT’s focus shifted to allowing friends to form alliances with each other for whatever the purpose may be, and rebranded themselves as the Helping Adventurous Pokémon Prosper Institute, or HAPPI. Despite HAPPI’s positive reception, Pokémon were still bitter. The Voice of Life, embodied in the form of a Hydreigon, saw that this negativity was going to lead into the premature awakening of the Dark Matter. Due to said awakening being early, this incarnation of Dark Matter was simply called “the Bittercold.” Hydreigon took to the time stream to find a human from who was pure of heart, before the Rebellion corrupted everything. Unbeknownst to him, the Master was the one who triggered the awakening with the very first feeling of hatred, with the hopes that he’d get a second chance with the Dark Matter. This is when the events of Gates to Infinity happened. SKIP IT! The Master learned from his mistake last time, and decided to be patient to get his second chance with the Dark Matter. Only about a year later, the opportunity presents itself. Little did he know that two old foes are going to return… Now, we’re here in Super Mystery Dungeon. If a new Mystery Dungeon comes out, I’ll have to expand the timeline… Or this whole thing could be jossed with the next release…

So I found a walkthrough of “The Phantom Fable” and its reaction time
But don’t take my word for it click here to form your own opinion and thank the hero that made this possible
I like how connie has no patience for the townies.
It also has just a lil bit of plot like lore about the various magitech artifacts (It's interesting that gems from Peridot's generation aren't really that familiar with them anymore) and Steven is still recognizeably in his season 4 slump. Also even though the book is supposed to be super old there's a lot of those triangular sigils around - is the book so old that it's from before PD came to be?
arcane acropolis
Really excited about the potential for lore speculation from these new locations! So they were researching magic in this place! It does look like your archetypical mage tower with all the bookshelves and aqueducts though the apocalyptic log on the computer says "mad science", and it seems like some mage gem went behind the Diamonds' backs because even they thought this was too dangerous. One always wonders how the weird magic artifacts from the early seasons fits into the greater canon.
Video games tend to be good at this "environment-based storytelling" but this is actually presented pretty well in a sorta melancholy haunting manner between the BGs, the music, the "ghost" of that unfortunate Pearl, various scattered hints that only sort of form a whole. Perhaps the uppity mage gem was Lonely Pearl's master....
...
OUCH from what I'd read it seems like they just "forgot" her/ didn't care enough to go back for her before the corruption attack but this seems like a way more complex story, like more of an individual act of cruelty/ deliberate punishment.
The mage gem deliberately "forgot" her while leaving the outpost, but it was HER who betrayed the empire. The mage gem was deliberately cruel, too, telling her that she would be coming back.
Lonely Pearl was basically being an upstanding citizen, reporting foul play to the Diamonds.
That is, if they even had the right "traitor" at all. Did they just assume it was her because of something like a “gossip hen” stereotype?
But from how she acts she seems pretty devoted like her master was her whole world - maybe they got the wrong traitor and she was innocent all along. Or she tattled because she was concerned about her master's own safety. In any case they really done her dirty
In any case I’m not even sure this took place on Earth. Did she just go nuts/feral all by herself? If so this is the first time we’ve seen that, seems like it was more some recording of wherever the magic book was made. Was this a recording? Is the real her still trapped out there or did the book absorb her out of pity? Where is she now if she’s anywhere at all? Or was it all an illusion?
It’s a nice Detail that it couldn’t capture Steven and Connie because, as Lapis and Peridot theorize, it doesn’t know how to ‘categorize’ them.
The taglines for the GUYS and GALS were genuinely funny IMHO
Buried Bastion
The Ruby Squad!
Though I do not quite get what Steven and Garnet are theorizing there.
Is it ‘our’ Rubies but in the past? Them inserted into some older memory of CG Ruby being deployed somewhere?Gah I love trippy stuff but you gotta give me a hint so I can work it out
It does seem to be earth tho. The desert too. Come to think of it, were the structures in the desert Pink Diamond’s former palace? Since she parked her ship there and was lurking around there without telling the others. Eyeball DID use to be part of her guard.
If this all takes place on Earth this means Lonely Pearl is either still at the research facility or in the bubble room/ set to beuncorrupted.
The rest of the squad was Era II tho none of them had really heard of PDs shattering, Leggy was implied to be fresh from the ground. (Which implies that both Rebel Ruby and Eyeball are in fact relatively old for Rubies. As footsoldiers it figures that they’d have one of the higher attrition rates)
And as usual their lines are comedic gold and full of personality Sand in my shorts lol
Perhaps in reality it was actually eyeball, but with a different squad of Rubies that are now long dead.
Maybe i’s an erised/ Xion type situation. Steven sees the Ruby Squad, Garnet might be seeing CG Ruby’s old comrades.
In any case they seem to be guarding an artifact - presumably the book - so it “wont fall into rebel hands”. Interesting.
This whole level has a very zeldaesque feel to it, there’s even pots to smash! I suppose the first one could then be likened to final fantasy.
No wait that’s the era II sigil. So this here is definitely late in the war.
“Glyph of Illusion”, hm? So now the trippyness shall become interactive
The broken computers make me so angry. I want more apocalyptic logs damnit
YEAH Late war, the screes show fusion experiments and its full of those tubes they emerged from.
And they found some magic bombs, too
Ohhhh boy, it WAS the fusion experiment lab. We know what it actually looks like now. Also was it just implied that they started with living dearth row inmates? Ouch.
UGH there’s bits of uncessesful specimens all over.
Note that there’s those red, vein-like “powerlines”, but they look more like the ones in the temple than the ones seen in various Era II structures
So they were sent to gather the last remaining research data and leave not witnesses - I mean clearly the Rebels never found out until Peridots arrival
Too bad we won’t know which of them said which of the Megaruby’s lines
In the end our heroes are not sure how much of this was real - but we all know there were fusion experiments. Maybe even the book only knew so much
Interim
Kinda curious where Amethyst has gotten to. Since we did both the distant past and the middle of the war. The sequence breaking in the forest and the beach is also kinda interesting.
Mysterious pillar saying “avoid the light”. Fascinating.
is that a nest full of donuts?
Aww you can find the hidingplace of onions friends in the forest
whoha its just like that one temple in breath of the wild!
Lost Labhyrinth
Looks like somewhere cold. There’s some random Quartzes but otherwise not much plot here. It’s like they ran out of ideas
ooo exit holes... in ice? Okey I possibly take that back plot might be forthcoming
I like the common theme that for each level the first half was named something vaguely mystical as it might look to an outside observer, and then the second bit is a crisp, spartan designation once the MCs figure out what it is. The duality of man gemkind, I suppose, though they really are kinda spartan as whole at least the mainstream/monarchist faction.
Figures that there would be more kindergartens than just the two since we haven’t seen he one where the earth-grown Rose Quartes came from. Since this is delta that one must’ve been Gamma. Might not even exist anymore.
That would mean there were four. One orange, one purple, one pastel, and one for the actual!rose quartzes.
There’s a mean Jasper but it’s not OUR mean Jasper. Why are eye gems all.. like that?
Ahhh I see. They’re hunting a group of off-colors. Possibly rebellious off-colors.
“You’ve sucessfully rescued all my Crsystal gem sidekicks” I can’t even
But of course they were only distracting us until the antagonist finally shows themselves and inevitably napps greg
yet more sequence breaking then
Interesting that you get the white sigil pieces in beach city
Final Dungeon
whats this zerg slime? re we doing starcraft now
though i suppose its also a tad like the blight ganons from breath of the wild where you had to shoot the eye
the musics also getting interesting
so its motive rant o clock. Coool voice, too
this is indeed getting breath of the wild-y. the korok forest anyone?
So far I was thinking that maybe the book spirit, excuse me, Fable, decided to record shameful occurences or maybe parts of gem history that were not so great aside from just recording the glory, perhaps even out of sympathy/emphasizing with the outcasts but as of now it seems more like she’s simply lonely
Poor Steven, it was mindfuckey how she offered to let him see his dead mom. He sorta feels pretty ambiguous about her so he’d probably be more frighteed by that prospect, but I’d say this would have worked on many a Standard Protagonist, like if this were Harry Potter or Shinji Ikari? napped.
Book-ception?! Fairly typical twist at this point but it would’ve been a waste not to do it. So they were napped after all, and put with all the humans in beach city
It’s interesting that she perceives Steven as “being unable to resist an adventure” but framed more in terms of the thrill than just chronic-hero-syndrome.
Now we are getting bullethell-sy for the final battle. Even the music is vaguely undertale-ish. i mean with how you have to get the one green bomb to defeat her that does kinda seem deliberate
So he talked her down of course, by promising to tell her some less awful stories for a change.
And she winds up as Steven’s diary because of course
Nice enough from a design standpoint I guess cant realistically expect more than this from a spinoff game

Days Return
 Word count - 2,874
Amethyst is late as usual for training, and Spinel goes out into the inhospitable weather to locate her.
The months rolled by. The Crystal Gems accepted the only known survivor of the Corruption Song, though a cheater Spinel claimed she was for not even coming into existence until the war was all gone. Anyway, the Amethyst required some work to come into a being that was more of a gem and less of a feral robonoid. The group had time to spare, alternating duties of training and team choreography, this alongside dealing with corrupted gems and gathering the remnants of shards they could manage to locate throughout ancient battlegrounds. Maintaining team synchronization was essential for fusion, and staying busy distanced them from darker tasks.
Today, clouds hung thick above the temple and poured a suffocating layer of down across the sea cliff. Everything was white, and the waters rolled lazy and blue against the glistening shore. Flurries swirled through the caverns entrance, dusting the glossy floors and warp pad with sleet.
Spinel stepped carefully off the slate and hopped her way down to the more tractable surface of the beach. She shook the drift piles forming on her shoulders and surveyed the coast. It was unbearable to look at, blinding and bright. Days like this put her in a sour mood. Yet she grinned; it was more of a grimace.
“Amethyst!” she called, forming her hands into a large megahorn. “Amethyst!” The gem could hear her. She was nearby. Just refused to emerge. “You won’t beat me at my own game.” She trudged through the thick drifts, ankle deep. If not for the expanding sea, it would be easy to lose track of her position in relation to the Crystal Temple. Miles up one side of the beach, no Amethyst. Miles around the point and into the fields, no Amethyst. She climbed to the peak of the coastal cliff, surveying the contrast of bleach to azure.
“Better not find out she was hiding somewhere in her room.” She bounced down the rocky face and marched up to the shore. Slush and silt formed glittering crystals, she gazed down on her marred reflection when sheets of glacial water wheezed in. “Heh. An improvement.”
The search resumed, halfheartedly she hiked this and that way calling, “Amethyst!” Spinel didn’t bother with the megahorn. “AMETHYST!” Sometimes, she stalled to peer at the perfect sheet of white stretching for miles that way and this. Too much white.
“‘She’s outside,’ she says. ‘Playing in the snow,’ she says.” Spinel kicked at the snow cap of the shallows, carving out a furrow in the crust. “Couldn’t give me a lil kiss?”
A stifled sound at her backside sent her whirling. Nothing in the drifts. She was certain that was a giggle. A childish, immature sound.
Spinel sighed and rolled her eyes. “I need to stop hanging with—” Impact caught her side, and she pitched sideways nearly into the water. “HEY!” It was….
 Pearl?
“Now-now Spinel, yammering on like that is so…. So… a smarty word for not elegant.” Ahha. An Amethyst parading as a Pearl.
Spinel shook the residual frost from her face. “You’re late for training. Either go inside, or I’ll haul you in. I prefer the latter, actually.”
“Can you just go in, tell them you never found me? I got lost in the desert. Tell them that.” Amethyst reverted to her typical shape and plopped down into the white puff. Within seconds, her legs vanished beneath a layer of white.
Spinel dragged her frozen legs from the shallows and crouched beside the other gem. She began scooping handfuls of the white fluff up around Amethyst’s waist. “Training is important. And it can be fun, if you’re working on showing up a certain stuck up loon.”
“Bah! You never train.” Amethyst flopped to her backside and helped Spinel cover the rest of her face.
“I do. Just not when you’re around.” She winked. “Gotta protect my trademark super-secret techniques.” Only Amethyst’s eyes were visible. Somehow, that seemed physically impossible. “Seriously, they’ve been waiting a day for you to show up. They got nothin’ better to do.”
“They can wait another, or two. Look at this stuff!” Amethyst wriggled about, and kicked her featureless booties into the air. In another minute, she’d be buried again. “This is great! It’s getting everywhere. It turns everything white! Where’s it coming from?”
Spinel sighed. “The sky. The clouds. You’ve seen snow before.”
“But not falling! When it’s on the ground, it’s so boring!” She rolled over into a sitting position, and skid her legs sideways through the drift. “It keeps comin’ and comin! Look! You got piles on your head.”
Spinel shook her shoulders again. “Last chance, Lil Amethyst. I’m not— HEY!” She ducked the snowball thrown at her face. “If that’s the way you want it!” She pounced.
 But Amethyst was gone.
Spinel crouched on her feet and hands, sifting through drifts. How’d she do that?
Right when she realized she was way open for an attack, she snapped her face up in time to receive another projectile. And went down in a splayed mess, creating the perfect impression in the white blanket.
Amethyst dropped to her backside, sinking into the snow. “The look on your face! WHAP!” She was laughing hard, beating at the frozen ground. Up until something beneath the snow snaked around her wrist, then she was cartwheeling through the air. She gave a shout, barely catching a glimpse of Spinel’s sinister grin.
“Ooh! Challenge accepted!” She let Amethyst bound through the snow uncontrolled. Her limbs recoiled, and Spinel stooped to gather up large handfuls of slush. “You’ll rue the day you thought toppling me would be easy. Hah!” Before Amethyst lost momentum, she heaved the large frost block. It flattened against the top layer like putty. “Let me know when you’ve had enough.”
Amethyst managed to emerge, kicking off layers of ice and dirt. “Never!” She chucked a half-formed snow clump, which Spinel dodged with a sway of her body. “What are we calling this contest? Snow… clash?”
Once more, Spinel was hoisting together a lethal amount of snow. “Catchy, but wrong theme. How ‘bout a snow… brawl?” She hefted up the ridiculous mound of snow—
Amethyst put power behind the snowball and beamed Spinel in the snout. The snow mound toppled and buried the gem completely. “I win! I win! I WIN—”
“Not a CHANCE!” A jagged etch of pink and magenta sprang from the core of the mound, an armful of snowballs in one arm, the other already swinging them out. “Admit defeat! Go inside! Garnet is more merciful than I am!”
“NEEEVER!” Wailed Amethyst. She ran for it, the whole barrage clinging to her back made her look like a gem abomination. Then there was Spinel giving chase, another impractical lump of snow held high-high above her head. She lunged at Amethyst, and managed to let the mush plunge onto them both. Maybe it was meant to be that way.
“What are you two doing?” Rose Quartz peered up at the monstrous heap.
Spinel emerged from the top first, shaking ice patches off her pigtails. It clung to her form, giving her a candy, frosted appearance. She dug around in the heap beside her, and produced one Amethyst.
 “A snow clash!”
“Snow brawl,” Spinel grumbled. She leered down at Rose. “Wanna play?”
Rose blinked, taken by the snarky grin. “Uh, well… Spinel. Amethyst.” The latter was already gathering up a wad of snow. Miniscule, but there was plenty of heart in it. It would also have a powerful trajectory behind it. “I’m not really into playing… games. Right now.”
“No?” Spinel stuck out her tongue. It was very childish, and reminiscent to the oldest of old days. “The mighty and great Rose Quartz, scourge of Home World, leader of the rebels, can’t be bothered with a game of—”
“Snow Cla—” Amethyst was in the process of reforming her shape, but Spinel shoved her back under the icy heap.
“Spinel.” Rose backed away. “I’m warning you.”
Spinel dragged her lanky body from the snow, already gathering up muddy frost between her large hands. Another outrageous snowball, as per her specialty. “Oh RooOOOooose,” she crooned.
Rose gave a yelp and began running. “Don’t you dare! Spinel!” She grabbed at handfuls of snow and flung it backwards, but wasn’t managing anything intimidating aside from casting flurries to spiral. Like tossing petals at an enraged tigress. “This isn’t fair! I’ll— I—” She dodged the projectile, and countered with one that was more suitable of the contest. Spinel collapsed backwards, but was still hoisting together frost to hurl.
With a mighty battle cry, Amethyst charged from the base of the snow mound and fell upon Spinel, before the gem could slither away. Rose Quartz rushed in to assist, but Spinel somersaulted backwards.
“Got me a hostage!” She sat up to her torso in trounced ice, limbs coiled around Amethyst in bundles. The threat was not so impactful, with Amethyst’s own arms wrapped about her neck.
 “I’m the hostage!”
A large snow ball hit Spinel square in the face. The frost clung there, and Amethyst poked in two eyes, a nose, and an upward curve for a smiley.
“Just WHAT are you two doing out here?” Pearl sidled up beside Rose, looking her leader over. She cast her eyes upon the goofy masked Spinel and Amethyst in her lap. “I should have guessed. Diverting our new and impressionable teammate with inane activities, such as this worlds insufferable weather conditions.”
 Rose sniggered. “Lighten up.”
“Oh PeeAArlll….” The snow flaked off Spinel’s face, revealing a snide grin.
“Spinel! No! Don’t you dare,” snapped Pearl. She backed away, as the Spinel uncoiled from Amethyst and began a threatening approach. The limbs didn’t coil back in, but stretched as Spinel hunched forward. “You know I hate it when you do that!”
“Come and play with us Pear—” A shadow doused out the intensity of light, and Spinel looked up. Pearl booked it as the rose embroider shield loaded with ice dipped over Spinel’s head. The shield vanished and an estimated truck load of snow fell atop the gem.
Pearl wiped a patch of ice from her shoulder. “Well. That is one way to dispatch that nonsense.”
Amethyst hid behind Rose, cackling her head off. “Oh no,” Rose uttered, clasping hands over her mouth. “Do you think that poofed her?”
“Doubt it.” Pearl managed a mere five steps from the two, when the ice erupted. A spiral of snowballs rained out from the stretched figure, all the while it cackled manically. Snow went everywhere, gems ducked or stooped at the mercy of the barrage.
Rose summoned her shield and managed to block the volley, but Amethyst lobbed her own icy missiles and caught the side of Rose’s wild curls. Pearl ducked and weaved, evading the first few spheres. The next twelve hit their mark, and she was soon a snow figure poised rigid.
“Ahh!” Rose was screeching, but it was full of mirth. She was racing away from Amethyst, trying to block cold projectiles pitched by the smaller gem, or from Spinel. This she was failing, due to Amethyst curling into a ball and zipping this or that way to exploit all openings. “Amethyst! That’s enough. Defeat! I concede!”
“I’ll save you!” Spinel tackled Rose, plowing her down.
 “Not helping!”
“Spinel!” Pearl shook the thick case of ice off, the coating layered on her legs she knocked away with a spear. “Unhand Rose! Amethyst! Y— Where’d she—” The zipping lilac ball mowed Pearl down. The buzzing shape cut through the ice, changing course erratically and heading right for Rose and Spinel.
Rose knelt and was about to summon another shield, but Spinel ducked forward shaping her arms like a ramp. “Up ya go!” Amethyst went airborne. “And for a bit of calculation….” Spinel trailed off, as she plucked up enough snow for a typical orb. She launched it, hit Amethyst square in the side, and the gem plummeted. Pearl was barely recovering from getting run over, when Amethyst crashed on top of her.
Spinel puffed out her chest. “HAH! I W—” Another truck load of snow, compliments of the shield.
Rose knelt beside the heap. “My hero.”
“Can someone please explain to me, what is going on?” Garnet crossed the beach, hands behind her back. “I’m inside, clearly aware that this was the most likely scenario. But you Pearl?”
Pearl shoved Amethyst off her backside. “It wasn’t my intent to get involved. Rose approved this!” She aimed an accusatory finger.
 “No I didn’t.”
“No she wasn’t!” Amethyst barked. She heaved a snowball.
Garnet caught it. And revealed, she already had one hidden behind her back. She crossed her arms, flinging the projectiles at Pearl and Amethyst respectively—
Spinel exploded like a spring from the snow at Garnet’s feet. She smashed a handful of frost into the stoic face. “Oh… GaaaAAArrrneee— UCK!” Garnet locked a gauntlet around Spinel’s shoulders.
“You win. I’ll play.” She rolled the Spinel up in a snow heap and flung that at Rose.
“Garnet! You— how could you!” Rose bolted summoning her shield, albeit too late. The packed frost hit the top edge of the forming shield and an icy sheet collided with her face, Spinel in tow. Both gems went down in a tumble of limbs and clumps of slush. “Spinel!”
 “Sorry! I’m stuck!”
Calmly, Garnet gathered up more slush, while Amethyst pelted her head with packed missiles. Pearl ended that quickly by pelting Amethyst in the face, only to receive another snowball to her own.
“GARNET! I’m trying to assist you.”
“Do I look like I need it?” The snow was already melting off her shoulders.
This went on throughout the day. Cackles of laughter and loose goose threats shooting back and forth, given wings on the frigid missile’s participants tossed. In the midst of nonsense, even Pearl began to show hints of her competitive side and humor. She tossed lame one liners, built a small fort of ice, and did not poof when one of her snowballs smashed into the back of Rose’s head.
When the light began to fade and the pastel blues became rich purples and pinks, the snow fighters sat at the edge of a frozen shore staring out to sea. Frost clung to their forms, adhered fast as if welded there. None of them had the urge to expel the crust. Except Pearl.
“So much for training,” mentioned Pearl. There was no annoyance in her tone, but she seemed preoccupied. “So much for getting anything done today.”
“There’s always the next cycle,” Garnet offered. “When the earth rotates. No great loss.”
“Who cares?” Amethyst mumbled. The snow was still falling, covering up the rabid fissures and barriers built across the beach. It also covered her, as she lay at the down’s mercy. “S’not like we’re gonna go and do anything else, aside from train and go off scouting. Why can’t we have some times when we don’t have to do anything important? Why we always hafta be going someplace, somewhere, and say we done something?”
“It’s important,” Rose offered. “We’ve told you how it is. Why we are doing these things. Since the war—”
 “Yeah-yeah.”
 “Amethyst,” Pearl hissed. “Don’t interrupt!”
“It’s fine.” Rose turned her attention to the Amethyst. “We’re the only ones left. We’re the ones responsible for this.” Amethyst humphed.
“If it wasn’t for our scouting,” Garnet began, “we wouldn’t have found you. We keep hope that there are others out there. You want to meet other gems, like us?”
 “I guess….”
“But…” Spinel hummed in a sing-song tone, “it was nice not having to do anything important. Not so grim.” She grinned up at Rose, eyes bright. “It’s been a long time, I can’t recall when it was I had this much fun.”
Rose smiled, and brushed some of the snow off Spinel’s hair. “Better days will come. We won’t always be able to stop and enjoy the best ones, but the time will come back to us, and we’ll be able to just… be.”
Spinel melted under the gentle caress. “Forever.”
“Forever?” Pearl pondered, mesmerized in the glimmering refractions dancing across the waves.
 “Forever.” Amethyst echoed.
“Forever… is a long time,” Garnet declared. “But we’ll have each other. If that’s how it is, then we can tackle the improbable and eventual. But only if we look after each other, and depend on one another.” She reached over and ruffled Amethyst’s frost tangled, mop head.
“Until the sky tips and the Earth splits, and the plates cease moving,” Rose followed. “We’ll find our own existence here. Our own lives. Our own freedoms, and pathways, our own private destinies. That’s what we have now. Each other, and what we want to become in this new world.”
The sky darkened, purples became velvety cobalt’s, the depths of space came forward to peer in on the planet it surrounded. A little slice of home to observe the gems, marooned on the world they fought and sacrificed to preserve. They stayed out there for hours longer, until eventually, the group returned to the Temple to begin preparing for their next course of action. The following hour. The coming event. The inevitable of time turning around them.
