I have asked for peace on so many mornings. Standing beneath the great grey glove of the sky Waiting for it to open its fist upon me So that I might taste the runoff from heaven. Like gentle evenings on the edge of the rice field When all the leaves cupped rain like pilgrims’ hands Pilgrims who have finally reached the well. Drink with me.  Because I am through waiting for water. I have arrived with dust on my feet and screams in my hair I have arrived with the fist of the sky clenched in my chest I have arrived with the meat and tender muscle of my tongue. There is a woodpecker caged on the front porch And I am wondering what would happen If I just let it out.
