These ebooks are in both PDF and EPUB. Both include illustrations, and the PDFs are in full color. We have years worth of book design experience now and they're pretty damn pretty + have fun backmatter.

They're pretty thoroughly self-edited, but still, self-edited. People have said very positive things about the characters and plot. <3

It's a passion project and we would be making/selling these regardless of if they pay off.

We are currently otherwise unemployed because our mental health is shot and every job we've worked has become literally dangerous for, uh, retaining our will to live reasons.

Currently, they are only on Itch.io. We might sell them on other platforms once the full series is done, and other platforms will be significantly less generous about royalties than Itch.

there's no "free" option because authors deserve to make some money on their work actually

"novel length" in this instance means somewhere in the 60k to 120k range, and for the purposes of this question this is a book which you are interested in reading (whether from the excerpts or summary or because you have faith in the author)

"ebook" would be any ereader format (epub, mobi, pdf, etc)

obviously this question ignores pricing tier stuff from vendors like amazon that give you a different payout depending on how expensive the book is

everyone: please stop paying money to "buy" digital copies of media. for example, if you lease a car, you're essentially renting it long-term, but if you buy it, it's yours. why should any other item you buy be different?

if you want a digital copy of media, those usually come free with most DVD/Blu-Ray purchases (even with some music CDs, which are easy to make a digital backup, regardless), which you get to actually own and even resell later. just like a car

if you just want to stream something that might go away without notice, streaming services exist. how Amazon has gotten away with charging extra for selling streaming content they tell users they're "buying," in addition to charging for streaming content via their Prime Video charges, is a mystery. especially when said content will eventually disappear when their temporary license to show it expires

before Amazon and Netflix etc killed the video-rental industry, you could go to a store like Hastings or whatever and either buy a new movie (for, say, $15), buy it used (for, say, $8), or rent it (for, say, $1.99). if Amazon wants to charge extra for shows they don't want to include in their Prime Video, they could rent them for a buck or so more, not charge as much as it might cost to actually own a copy that you can re-watch any time in the future, but not actually deliver you a copy your own

if you want to buy buy media, only pay for something you will actually own. you can always rip a personal copy of physical media for backup use to play through your computer or phone if you prefer, but you do not own something that can be taken away

side (but closely related) note: why in the actual fuck do we let game companies get away with "selling" us games without physical media and which require connection to the company servers to play? that's called renting, folks, not buying

As for patterns, there are soooo many good sources!

There are the ubiquitous Pleasant Company Pretty Clothes patterns floating around as pdfs (and the originals/ copies floating around on the secondhand market, if you prefer that to printing them).

These patterns provide several looks for the original PC girls— Samantha, Kirsten, Molly, Josefina, Addy, and Felicity. Includes dresses, underthings, coats and jackets, shawls, and their school outfits.

Hat to Hem on YT made a really cute video recently recreating Samantha’s Cranberry Christmas Dress with these patterns. SomethingBeautifulHandcrafts/ allmydollscollector on YT makes lots of sewing blog videos using these patterns.

These are good if you want to DIY reproductions, or they can be used as a jumping off point with different fabrics. See my Josefina’s Thanksgiving Dress, made using Josefina’s Christmas Dress from Josefina’s Pretty Clothes.

There are commercial patterns from the big sewing companies (Simplicity/ It’s So Easy, Butterick, Kwik Sew, McCalls/ It’s Sew Simple, Vogue) in historical and modern looks. These are available online and in big box stores like Joann’s and Walmart.

Word of the wise— I never purchase these unless there’s a sale on at Joann’s— they go for 1.99, limit 10, but that’s way better than MSRP.

I myself am partial to books! They’re a great value for the number of different patterns that come with them. I get them at fabric stores, Half Priced Books, online secondhand book sellers, independent shops.

Molly's clown outfit from a while back is so cute and whimsical. What was your inspiration and thought process going in? Also, would you mind sharing the pattern for it? What sort of places do you recommend to get patterns from in general? Thank you so much

Last April, I attended a lecture on the philosophy of clowning. It was all about finding joy and whimsy in life, stomping out seriousness, that sort of thing. So that was my inspiration!

For inspiration, I looked at both actual clown outfits, clown dolls, historical clowns/ pierrots/ jesters, and modern Halloween costumes. There’s lots of different areas to draw inspiration from, but for my first clown outfit, I decided to keep it simple. I went with the most basic harlequin color block style. Normally it’s a onesie, but I was into making separates at the time and didn’t have time to draft a whole new pattern.

My fabric choices were guided by what Joanns had in stock. I wanted polka dots and very colorful/ 90’s kidcore/ rainbow aesthetic. I wound up with two teal and white polka dot fat quarters, a half yard of a rainbow print, a roll of rainbow baby rick rack, and two kinds of narrow polka dot grosgrain ribbons.

I also used stash materials including red bias tape, narrow teal ribbons, solid red grosgrain ribbon and baby rick rack, white cotton fabric, red buttons, lightweight interfacing, and variegated thread.

For patterns, you don’t need any specific one. As long as you have a basic dress pattern with a puff sleeve, and a bloomer pattern, you can hack it into Mollypop’s clown separates :)

I used:

basic dress bodice, lengthened to shirt length. (Do NOT cut bodice front on the fold. Add a seam allowance at the center front to allow for splicing together the two different fabrics).

Long puffed sleeves— short ones can also be lengthened. One of each fabric. These were hemmed, trimmed with rick rack, and gathered with elastic.

A bloomers pattern and rectangular waistband to make the puffy pants. The pant legs were also hemmed and trimmed with rick rack. Then they got an external casing from red ribbon to run elastic through. Gathered top to the waistband, put a snap at center back to close.

To make the neck ruffle, I trimmed a white rectangle with more rick rack, then gathered it. Then I bound the neckline with a bit of bias cut polka dot. Another piece of red ribbon was used as a sash.

I drafted her hat from a cone. Any witch hat pattern could be used instead. I took inspiration from the “brimless” witch hats in the manga Witch Hat Atelier.

Her braids got wire braided in, just like I saw done in my sister’s school play when we were kids.

Lastly, her big smiley face sticker is from a real clown at a clown event I attended at the university :)
