Would you ever consider growing your hair out to shoulder length? I have a decently high paying job, and I'd be willing to give, say, 200 dollars PCM if you would do that, and send me photos. More money would be involved later, if you were willing to have an IRL meetup, or take medications that I ask you to. If that's not on the table, totally understandable, have an awesome day!

4K Ultra HD Review: Basket Case
Unlike most "prestigious" organizations dedicated to the arts (I'm looking at you, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences), the Museum of Modern Art doesn't ignore the existence of genre fare. Nevertheless, there's something surreal about seeing "This film is from the collections of The Museum of Modern Art" at the start of Basket Case, a sleazy exploitation picture shot on 16mm over the course of a year for under $35,000.
The 1982 film follows Duane Bradley (Kevin VanHentenryck), who carries around his formerly-conjoined twin brother, a deformed, fleshy menace named Belial, in a wicker basket. While Duane intends to get revenge on the medical professionals who performed their unwanted separation surgery, Belial indiscriminately kills anyone who opens the basket like a malevolent jack in the box.
It's clear from the start that some sort of creature is contained within the basket, but writer-director Frank Henenlotter (Frankenhooker, Brain Damage) smartly allows the tension to build before revealing Belial in all his glory at the end of the first act. There's no mistaking it for anything but inanimate rubber (save for a primitive stop-motion sequence), but its blood-curdling screams give it life. Special effects artists Kevin Haney and John Caglione Jr. both won Oscars for Best Makeup — for Driving Miss Daisy and Dick Tracy, respectively — less than a decade removed from Basket Case.
MoMA's 4K restoration of Basket Case's original 16mm AB negative reels arrives on 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible) and original uncompressed PCM mono audio via Arrow Video. Importantly, the restoration presents the film in newfound clarity while preserving the '80s NYC grime inherent to the film. The limited edition set comes with reversible artwork, a double-sided fold-out poster, and a booklet with writing on the film by horror historian Michael Gingold and a Basket Case comic strip by Martin Trafford, all housed in a slipcase featuring artwork by Sara Deck.
While no new special features were produced for the 4K, the plethora of existing materials including cover every conceivable aspect of the film. Henenlotter and VanHentenryck's breathless commentary from Arrow's 2017 Blu-ray doubles as a low-budget film school, from reusing sets to dumpster diving for decor. An archival track from Something Weird's 2001 DVD with Henenlotter, producer Edgar Ievins, actress Beverly Bonner, and Basket Case 2 production assistant Scooter McRae repeats most of the insight, but it's fun to hear their rapport.
Interviews are ported over with VanHentenryck, who discusses his cerebral approach to playing the character; Bonner, who wrote and starred in a play examining where her character might be 30 years after Basket Case; Florence and Maryellen Schultz, Henenlotter's identical twin cousins who play nurses in the film and share his unique sense of humor; and legendary film critic and The Last Drive-In host Joe Bob Briggs, whose campaign to host the film's drive-in premiere saved it from being cut by its distributor.
A joke interview with Henenlotter features the filmmaker portrayed by Albert Cadabra, a sideshow performer who edited Henenlotter's Bad Biology, in the nude. The Latvian Connection explores four crucial members of the Basket Case team of Latvian descent: Ievins, associate producer/effects artist Ugis Nigals, casting director/actress Ilze Balodis, and Belial performer Kika Nigals. What’s in the Basket? is a 78-minute documentary produced by Severin Films in 2012 covering the Basket Case franchise with cast and crew.
Three short films are featured: Basket Case 3½, an 8-minute mockumentary from 2017 in which Henenlotter interviews "Duane Bradley" (VanHentenryck) about the events of Basket Case; Slash of the Knife, Henenlotter's 1976 short film that ultimately lead him to make Basket Case, with optional commentary by Henenlotter and playwright Mike Bencivenga and outtakes; and Belial’s Dream, a 2017 stop-motion animated short by Robert Morgan (who just made his feature debut with Stopmotion), accompanied by its own brief making-of featurette.
Other extras include: the MoMA's 2017 restoration premiere introduction and Q&A with Henenlotter, VanHentenryck, Bonner, the Schultz twins, and Ugis Nigals; The Frisson of Fission, a video essay by film historian Travis Crawford exploring the history of conjoined twins and "freaks" in cinema; a 2011 filming location tour with Henenlotter and rapper R.A. The Rugged Man (who co-wrote Bad Biology) explore the filming locations; outtakes; five image galleries (promotional stills, behind the scenes, ephemera, advertisements, home video releases); three trailers; a TV spot; and two radio spots.
Henenlotter didn't set out to make a cult film — in fact, he didn't think anyone would ever see his feature debut — but that's what he accomplished with Basket Case. Shot on location in New York City, the picture doubles as a time capsule of a seedy version of Times Square that no longer exists; one littered with drug dealers, sex workers, and porno theaters. While the sequels would lean more into the comedy, the original film balanced its camp with well-placed shocks.
Basket Case will be released on 4K Ultra HD on April 30 via Arrow Video.

he made it from the wolf house to camp jupiter (a notoriously “testing” journey) in like a day. everyones asking him how and he just goes “well… i asked a stranger to use their google maps a sec?” it’s so funny. he just searches the highway lupa mentions CJ is stationed along and uses the live view thing & finds it
did javelin throwing in his school!
is like the only nice medic. everyone loves him because he is nice to genuinely everyone
his initials are PCM. if anyone knows the streams in india you will get that this is FUNNY (well. to me at least.)
for context PCM is a stream in the indian educational system that stands for “physics, chemistry, & mathematics.”
rajasthani!!
ABSOLUTE maggi addict. more than any indian food it’s maggi it’s such a problem you even have jason grace concerned for him like what??? sir youve been eating this three days in a row???
asclepius has very few children across both greek & roman forms but by FAR is he the favourite. also asclepius is a good dad!! (it’s also favouritism though the favouritism is SO real)
this is a separate fic about him im writing but he accidentally brings someone back from the dead. bro is fucked lmao

Hi! Firstly I must say that I found this account thanks to one of the Pharma content you shared and I must say I am very glad I found it. It helped me see a lot of things in the canon universe that I hadn't realized before, and to understand the personalities of some of the characters. And I wonder... What do you think about how fandom portrays some characters like Tarn, Getaway , Pharma and etc? Most of the fanfics I saw took these kind of characters a bit OOC. Is this because we don't have much of canon information about the characters or is it some kind of misinformation ?
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the Pharmaposting and stayed to look at some other TF IDW content!
Honestly, I've only really read fic with Pharma in it that I would consider OOC (and I don't feel confident enough in my analysis of Tarn to say what's IC for him or not), but I do have a suspicion that them and other characters being written OOC is indeed more about misinformation, or more accurately, fandom bias.
TLDR: People forget that "protagonist" doesn't mean good guy and "antagonist" doesn't mean evil guy, so fandom tends to give their favorites a lot of whitewashing and justifications for their shitty traits, while piling the antagonists with every flaw possible to show how EVIL they are. Also, fandom is just full of petty bias where popular characters will be treated with favoritism and good faith, but unpopular characters will be interpreted in the worst possible light even if it's OOC or contradicts canon.
A lot of people tend to fall prey to a sort of mindset called "protagonist centered morality" where basically, the protagonists always have to be good people (because many people assume that protagonist/POV character = the guys that are supposed to be Good and Right) and anything they do is right, even if it's not, because they're the protagonists. And the designated antagonists/villains are always evil in every way because they're against the Protagonists who are Good and anyone who's against the Good Guys must be Bad. And PCM is understandable to a degree, because it's only natural that since readers spend more time with the protagonists of the story, they are far more sympathetic to those characters and thus tend to give them more charitable interpretations or excuses for their actions.
If I had to hazard a guess, I would say that Pharma, Tarn, and Getaway (just as the specific examples you mentioned) get written as OOC because they stand as antagonists to the protagonists of MTMTE (to Ratchet, Megatron, and Rodimus respectively), and people like the protagonists more than the antagonists. So that means in fics, the antagonists are more likely to be written as one dimensional or villainous in OOC ways basically because of the inherent bias towards protagonists and the assumption that protagonist = good guy
For example, one frequent OOC take I've seen of Pharma is people writing him as if he's a Functionist. This is partially based on misinformation, because I think many fans just saw Pharma working with Tyrest to eradicate cold-constructed mechs and instantly jumped to "Pharma works with Tyrest and Tyrest is a bigot, therefore Pharma is also a bigot" while completely ignoring the actual contextual reasons behind Pharma being there at all (aka, Pharma was there because Tyrest found him and he would've died otherwise, also Tyrest is pretty clearly exploiting Pharma based on the ways he treats and talks to him). And they just jump to writing Pharma as a vain, Functionist prick because hey he's a Bad Guy and Bad Guy = Bigoted right???
Except that doesn't actually hold up to canon, since as we know RATCHET is the medic who spends by far the most amount of screentime talking about how forged medic hands are superior to cold constructed or any other form of hands out there, literally saying that he'll be "worthless" once his hands start working.
But the problem is that for the average Fandom Person with an incredibly black-and-white worldview, the concept of Ratchet, one of the good guys, one of the most famous of the good guys even, being a Functionist? That makes them really uncomfortable, because Functionism is bigotry and everyone who has bigoted beliefs has to be an asshole who's evil and does bad things, right? And protagonists are Good Guys who can't be Evil and Bigoted and Do Bad Things.
So then, people either selectively pick out or completely ignore canon and write Pharma as the Functionist and Ratchet as the pure, open-minded good guy. Because people assume by default that protagonist/POV characters = good and the antagonists = bad, and in order to show that the good guys are Good they have to be perfectly ideologically pure, and every antagonist has to be Horrible and Bigoted. I think this is especially bad in fandom because I've seen a lot of cases where villains are written as evil in every possible way with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Like, in canon a villain might just murder some people and laugh about it, but in fanon people write the villain not just as a sadistic murderer but as someone who's also racist, sexist, ableist, etc etc. Writers who are really inexperienced tend to rely on bigotry as a crutch to make sure the Designated Villain is seen as villainous beyond a shadow of a doubt in a way that's really eye-roll inducing because it's like, you can tell that the writers can't comprehend the idea of villains being interesting, compelling, or correct about anything, so they compensate by making the Villain Character absolutely repugnant and bigoted in every way so that it's abundantly clear that You Are Not Supposed To Sympathize With This Character Or Question The Morality of Their Perspectives You're Supposed To Just See Them As Pure Evil For My Morally Righteous Protagonists to Defeat.
So, while I can't really speak towards ways Tarn or Getaway are written as OOC in fandom, I have been in enough fandoms in general to know that fandoms are full of petty, stupid takes where fans are blindingly biased towards their favorites, to the point where they can't separate their emotional attachments to characters from reality. And they end up writing certain characters as OOC over the top villains in their fan fiction because they can't comprehend any other reason why ANYONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND would try to harm or get in the way of the precious, good, sweet protagonists who are right about everything and if they've ever done anything wrong then it was morally justified actually and they're totally different from these antagonists who did comparably bad things.
So to bring it back to Transformers: Fandom can't acknowledge Ratchet as a Functionist because that would mean that he's problematic and evil, so we have to make Pharma the Functionist because he's already evil so make him a bigot too. Also, if Pharma hates Ratchet and tortures him, it's just because Pharma is evil. What do you mean Ratchet stole Pharma's severed hands after leaving him for dead on a frozen planet? Pharma is evil, sweetie, that means that he got what he deserved and he has no rights to be angry about his body parts being harvested/used by someone else without his consent. Also, clearly the only reason Pharma wants his hands back is because he's an evil Functionist who thinks being forged makes him superior. Huh? What's bodily autonomy? No, Pharma is just evil and there's nothing understandable about his motivations at all. Being angry at your ex best friend for abandoning you, leaving you for dead, and then stealing your hands to use as his own is a JUSTIFIABLE reason for Pharma to be an antagonist to Ratchet, and Pharma isn't allowed to be justified in anything because he's evil! Evil people can't be right about anything because that would mean that evil people have feelings and sometimes the designated good guys might not actually be 100% good like I project on them in my head!
(I'm exaggerating for comedic purposes, but I hope you understand what I mean.)
Also, another thing about petty fandoms is that shipping is a big reason why characters get written as OOC in fan fiction. To put it simply, certain ships are very popular, and some characters outside of that ship are seen as "competition" for the OTP. Thus the "competition" is villainized so that it becomes abundantly clear that the characters of the OTP were totally meant to be together. For example, Pharma being written as the creepy stalker ex to Ratchet/Drift.
It's not even just a shipping thing either, you see it with popular characters being super coddled by the fanbase, and any characters who hate them in the story get written in fanfic as being the worst most abusive people ever. Fans of character A care so much about A being happy that they view any character being an antagonist to A as evil and standing in the way of A's happiness-- even if the antagonist is completely justified in their antagonism towards A.
If Tarn is written as OOC in your experience, I would hazard a guess that it's because Megatron is insanely popular among MTMTE fans and Tarn is an antagonist who threatens Megatron's happiness. Therefore Tarn has to be written as 100% evil and Megatron is blameless for everything Tarn did/became, because acknowledging that Megatron fucked Tarn up and then completely forgot he existed right until the moment Tarn threatened Megatron's good time would mean acknowledging that Megatron is kind of an asshole who maybe had karmic retribution coming to him.
I assume something similar would happen with OOC Getaway, but with Rodimus instead. Rodimus is very popular = Rodimus is our sweet boy who deserves the best = ew I can't believe Getaway mutinied against Rodimus, anyone who hates Rodimus is just an evil asshole = I will write Getaway in my fan fiction as being literally the worst guy in existence and being evil just to be evil = Getaway has no justifications for being evil because only someone who's 10000000% evil would ever do those things he did and steal what belongs to Rodimus.
Sorry for the really long response, and I am aware this is quite a cynical take on OOC writing in fandom. I am just very cynical because of the amount of stupid takes I've seen in fandom that are more based on people's biases and favorite/unfavorite characters rather than anything factually based in canon, and it's a pretty widespread problem in general that fandom tends to mischaracterize characters or ignore lore whenever it suits them. And again, I've only really seen OOC Pharma so when it comes to Tarn and Getaway, I can only make educated guesses based on what I've seen of canon and brief glimpses of fandom discourse.
#squiggle answers#this is really long sorry lol i kind of exhaustively explained my thought process when i didnt have to

heyy!! i hope you're doing well :))
i just saw you're thinking of taking PCM so here are some points i'd like for you to consider. you know yourself best and i believe in you and i believe you'll make the right choice but i feel obligated to tell you stuff about it since i study those subjects.
this is not to scare you or to tell you you're "unfit" or whatever. this is just to give you a better perspective on what the PCM life looks like <3
11th is a MASSIVE increase in difficulty. study from day 1 because you will struggle, no matter how "clever" you are (<- i put clever in quotes because academic performance =/= cleverness). Science stream in particular is difficult in itself.
lots of people enter a burnout stage after 10th. add to that the difficulty of 11th grade and you'll start feeling worthless. THIS IS NORMAL. EVERYONE FEELS THIS WAY.
i dont regret my choice but i know people who do. science is mera dil meri jaan i love sciences with all of my heart which made it easier for me. i *enjoyed* studying and learning in 11th but i also know people who dont. make sure you really like these subjects. i'd suggest going over the NCERT textbooks to get an overview of what you'll be learning. i was kind of split between science and arts and i did this and went with science because it seemed more interesting.
11th science PCM in particular will be easier with tuitions (especially if you'll be taking the JEE) (i'd recommend vedantu but you do you).
12th is so much easier than 11th.
i cant think of anything else rn
so yeah. i hope this is helpful. i believe in you and i'm sorry if this sounds scary. its not very scary but i figured you'd appreciate something like this :))
Oh my gosh you have no idea how grateful I am for this😭 thank you thank you thank you!
I have no idea if I like science or not. I just used the elimination method 😭. Mtlb humanities seems boring. I'm sure I won't be able to endure it for two whole years Mai Pak jaungi. Commerce me koi bhi interest nhi h meko. It's like eww noo. medical mere se Hoga nhi bcz uss field me jana is a big no meri trf se. Doctorgiri mere se nhi ho paegi. Toooooh bacha non medical 😭 lekin mujhe physics Ka darr lag rha h. Maine suna h ki bhtt mushkil Hoti h

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 Spoiler-Filled Review
Star Trek: Lower Decks is a mature animation which combines elements of the adventure, comedy, and sci-fi genres. Series creator Mike McMahan is known as a co-creator of Solar Opposites, a producer on Rick and Morty and as a consulting producer on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. This is the ninth series in the Star Trek franchise and second Star Trek animated series after Star Trek: The Animated Series ended in 1974.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the fifty-sixth article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on November 30, 2023. PCM editor Jean Henegan she said she added some content "since I'm a massive Trek nerd/fan, I added a bit of context around some of the things you pointed out...and cleaned up a couple of things that weren't quite accurate...Nice piece, overall." I have incorporated those additions here. Most of the text is the same as what I submitted on November 28th.
This animated series, which has aired for three seasons, takes a different tact than previous Star Trek series. It focuses on lower-ranked officers who engage in menial labor, known as lower deckers. Others are supporting characters. Star Trek: Lower Decks focuses on Starfleet, the military and exploration division of the United Federation of Planets, in the 24th century. It is tasked with establishing contact with races across the galaxy using a ship no one cares about: the USS Cerritos.
Four lower deckers are protagonists: Beckett Mariner, Brad Boimler, D’Vana Tendi, and Sam Rutherford. They are voiced by Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, and Eugene Cordero. Four others are recurring characters: captain of the Cerritos (Carol Freeman), first officer Jack Ransom, tactical officer Shaxs, and head medical doctor T’Ana. Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O’Connell, Fred Tatasciore, and Gillian Vigman voice these characters. All are well-known voice actors.
This series stands out because of its animation style, comedy, plot, and characters. Mariner is a big part of this. Her romantic relationships became a big part of the series, especially in the third season, when she is dating Jennifer Sh'reyan (voiced by Lauren Lapkus). Like actual relationships, they don't stay together, partially because Jennifer does not stand by her. She abandons Mariner when many on the Cerritos incorrectly think she is a traitor. Mariner is bisexual or pansexual. Previously, she dated Steve Levy. She tells Tendi, in a season two episode, that she dated "bad boys, bad girls, bad gender non-binary babes, [and] ruthless alien masterminds." She dated Amina Ramsey (voiced by Toks Olagundoye) while at Starfleet Academy. McMahan stated that "every Starfleet officer is probably at the baseline bisexual" and that there was no intention for "anybody to be strictly heteronormative or straight or cis."
Unfortunately, this is rarely explored in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4. There are some romantic vibes between Mariner and T’Lyn (voiced by Gabrielle Ruiz), a fellow crewmember on the Cerritos (who also happens to be Vulcan), in the fourth episode. They care for each other (as much as a Vulcan can care, with their repressed emotions), especially after knives keep stabbing Mariner during the episode. In the episode after, T’Lyn calms down Mariner’s emotions after her fever causes everyone’s emotions on the Cerritos to go out of control. In another episode, Mariner enjoys being kissed by a guy. Otherwise, her development during the season revolves around her promotion to a higher rank and ramifications of that decision. Although she is still part of “lower decks,” she is now a junior grade lieutenant, which makes her uneasy.
Boimler and Rutherford get closer, especially after the fourth episode. They even solve a disagreement by dressing up as Mark Twain and talking on a simulated steamboat. Both struggle with their promotions, although in different ways than Mariner. For instance, Boimler gets his first mission as commander and attempts to do everything himself. With some prodding from T’Lyn, he ends up sacrificing himself to save everyone and is later brought back to life. Rutherford also tries to find his place on the ship following his promotion. The closeness between Boimler and Rutherford has led some to ship them together. After all, in the eighth episode, Boimler doesn’t mind taking off his pants when Rutherford asks. Presently, there are less than 20 fics shipping them. Comparably, there’s over 120 fics for the Marinler ship (Mariner and Boimler). The latter has a small chance of canonization as compared to the Rutherford/Boimler ship.
Otherwise, there are wild plotlines, whether about Betazoid “diplomats” (actually undercover intelligence officers) with a hidden agenda who almost bring the Cerritos into the neutral zone where Romulans await battle, a fake marriage between Tendi and Rutherford, or megalomaniacal A.I. – known as Badgey – trying to get revenge. In the case of the latter, the A.I. comes out of the Daystrom Institute on Earth, returning following its initial appearance in season two. In the time between the seasons, it was imprisoned in a penitentiary holding other A.I. of a similar nature. His plans are foiled when he realizes that ultimate power is too much. The plans of two A.I., Peanut Hamper and Aegus, also fail after they realize that killing others isn’t worth it. Both commit to reforming their selves, so they aren’t evil anymore.
The depiction of A.I. in Star Trek: Lower Decks is somewhat similar to the rogue A.I. in Futurama's Season 8 Part One, or near-planet-destroyer Light Hope in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. It differs from the mixed representation in Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and Cleopatra in Space, or more positive depictions in My Dad the Bounty Hunter, Kizuna no Allele, and Supa Team 4. This matters considering social media rumblings that some actors will not vote for the recent contract between SAG-AFTRA and the Hollywood studios due to reportedly subpar A.I. provisions [Note: The previous line was removed from the PCM version.]
Throuhgout the season, there are also scenes with spoken poetry, a bar fight (started by Mariner, naturally), and an instance of Boimler getting addicted to a Ferengi television series. There’s even a funny episode where everyone recounts their experiences about being stuck in a cave with different Starfleet officers. However, it’s the journey that Mariner takes over the course of the season that truly hits home as the season comes to a close. Following her promotion Mariner struggles to be a leader, desperate to keep bucking command. How can you be rebellious against the command structure when you are part of it? She asks herself this question, trying to determine what her purpose within Starfleet is. It isn’t until the close of the season that she truly understands who she is and why she is so hesitant to take on more responsibility.
In that episode, Captain Freeman is worried about Mariner. She’s unsure why Mariner is taking risks and trying to get herself killed. She orders Mariner’s friends to distract her. This backfires. Mariner, along with T’Lyn, Tendi, and Boimler, all teleport to a planet surface before their ship is destroyed. When they admit they are worried about her, and reveal the Captain’s order, she is unhappy. She agrees to stay with them until she slips out during the night. In the process, she bonds with a Klingon, who tells her what no one has stated directly: she’s at war with herself.
youtube
This is only part of Mariner’s attempted self-examination. It is akin to Yor Forger asking herself why she is an assassin in episode 33 of Spy x Family, lingering doubts of Teru Momijiyama / Shy in Shy about her reasons for being a hero, or Sora Harewata-ru / Cure Sky wondering why she hesitates to fight the Undergu empire in episode 42 of Soaring Sky! Pretty Cure. Mariner reveals she is partially in Starfleet to honor Sito, a friend from her time at Starfleet Academy who died a senseless death several years earlier, which makes her continue to question Starfleet’s mission. She admits that while she doesn’t hate Starfleet, she tried to get out of a promotion. She believes Starfleet should solve the puzzles of life, not start wars (which could violate the Prime Directive). As she tells the Klingon, she doesn’t want to send her friends off to die. She wants to be an ensign and nothing more.
Ma’ah (voiced by Jon Curry), the Klingon, suggests that she honor her friend, slay her enemies, and study to be better. In response, she hugs him, rather than fighting him, and says they should work together. The episode hints at her future leadership, possibly in Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5. She rallies everyone together in a rousing speech. Unfortunately, she is kidnapped by “Nicholas” Nick Locarno (who, like Sito, previously appeared in live action in Star Trek: The Next Generation and were once again portrayed – in voice over – by their live action actors Robert Duncan McNeil – who also starred on Star Trek: Voyager – and Shannon Fill), who beams her up into a mysterious ship – a ship that has been “destroying” various species’ ships throughout the season. Thanks to her efforts, Boimler, T’Lyn, and Tendi, along with new allies, destroy a Klingon warbird. They are disappointed that Mariner isn’t aboard.
The Season 4 finale ends with a bang, as it turns out that ships “destroyed” across the galaxy have joined the renegade Nova Fleet/Squadron. It resembles the rag-tag rebel fleet in Star Wars Rebels. There’s a major difference: Nick is willing to engage in terrorism, i.e., threat or use of violence to cause panic or intimidate, especially as a method to affect political conduct, as defined in the Third Pocket Edition of Black’s Law Dictionary. Mariner easily stops this. She calls out Nick as selfish and brainless, then steals a genesis device, which can destroy planets.
Captain Freeman shows her dedication to her daughter, and to the well-being of her crew. She goes to extreme lengths to rescue Mariner. After a failed contest on her homeworld of Orion, Tendi agrees to work for her pirate sister, D’Erika (voiced by Ariel Winter), so they can get a battleship. They use the decrepit warship to smash through the barrier. It creates a hole big enough for the captain’s yacht to enter. In the process, they save Mariner. Nick is left on her ship after he tries to kill her and activates the genesis device. In a moment of clever dark humor, Nick is destroyed by the device since he can’t pay the money needed to deactivate it (since it is a Ferengi model, of course).
The episode ends with Captain Freeman not court-martialed, T’Lyn refusing to return to her previous ship, and the four protagonists come together for a party in the mess hall. While they party for a short bit, this soon ends, as Tendi feels obligated to fulfill her end of the bargain she made with D’Erika: she must return to a life of piracy alongside D’Erika. Although this depresses Rutherford, neither he, Boimler nor Mariner, stop her from leaving. Tendi prepares herself for what comes next. Undoubtedly, her story will be expanded in Star Trek: Lower Decks fifth season, which was in production as of March.
As noted earlier, queer representation was lacking in this season, as opposed to previous ones. In the past, I’ve written that the ship engineer, Andy Billups (voiced by Paul Scheer), was possibly asexual. A recent post on treksphere makes the same claims. It argues that Tendi is aromantic, Billups is an asexual icon, and points to possible asexual vibes from Spock, Data, and Odo in the Star Trek franchise – although all three characters have relationships with women at various points in their stories. Such claims are only headcanons, similar to those who believed that Page in Tron: Uprising was asexual. There are no asexual characters in the Star Trek universe, to my knowledge. As such, having a canon asexual character in Star Trek: Lower Decks, outward in their identity like Todd Chavez in Bojack Horseman, would be great.
Asexual representation in animation, and in popular culture, is slim. While Alastor in Hazbin Hotel, Lilith Clawthorne in The Owl House, Peridot in Steven Universe, or Perry the Platypus in Phineas and Ferb, are asexual, they were confirmed off-screen. The same is the case for Spongebob Squarepants and Percival "Percy" King in Epithet Erased. Some have stated that Seiji Maki in Bloom Into You and Shōko Tanimoto in The Case Files of Jeweler Richard are asexual. In a previous review, I noted this was the case for Hime Shiraki in Yuri is My Job!. I've seen social media chatter about the manga which comes to a similar conclusion.
Hopefully, Star Trek: Lower Decks fifth season expands on Mariner‘s personal relationships and her identity, and that of the other protagonists. Undoubtedly, it will retain its mature comedy and quirkiness. All the while the characters will be thrown into conflict-prone situations, a breeding ground for trauma. This is not unique. There are multiple series airing this fall featuring characters in tense and stressful situations, sometimes involving murder of human beings. This includes certain The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess and Spy x Family episodes.
Otherwise, people anonymously described their conditions at Titmouse in a largely-circulated spreadsheet about animation studios. In the spreadsheet, which has 11 entries for the aforementioned animation studio, people praise Titmouse for good pay, flexible and healthy working hours, opportunities for rapid advancement, and good management. Others criticize Titmouse for disorganization, overwork, low pay, and say it is only good for those entering the industry. Clearly, it’s a mixed bag. There are different experiences, depending on each production, if I’m understanding these entries correctly.
In my previous review of Star Trek: Lower Decks, I noted that LGBTQ+ representation is at the heart of the show. I pointed to myriad examples of such representation (and in the franchise), and note that many fan fictions for Mariner are skewed toward men. As such, I still see the interactions between Mariner and Boimler as platonic rather than romantic. I understand how people see them as the latter, shipping them as Marinler, but I see them as good friends, rather than good lovers.
youtube
In the past, this series had some of best queer representation in mature animation. Other examples include RWBY, Disenchantment, Final Space, Bojack Horseman, and Harley Quinn. In season 4 of Star Trek: Lower Decks, this was less emphasized. Even so, the series is still moving in an inclusive direction. It isn't like Star Wars: The Bad Batch. That series had "four White men and one person of color, in the main cast," as I wrote in January.
This direction is clear from the cast and crew. Tawny Newsome and Dawnn Lewis, who voice Mariner and Captain Freeman, are both Black women, like their characters. Noël Wells (voice of Tendi) is of Tunisian and Mexican descent. Eugene Cordero (voice of Rutherford) is of Filipino descent. Gabrielle Ruiz is of Mexican descent. Carlos Alazraqui is Latine. Black men such as Marcus Henderson, Phil LaMarr, and Carl Tart also voice characters. There are some White male voice actors, such as Jack Quaid, Jack McBrayer, Jerry O'Connell, Fred Tatasciore, Paul Scheer, and Paul F. Tompkins. White women like Gillian Vigman, Lauren Lapkus, Georgia King, and Jessica McKenna voice characters too. Although, they are not the majority of the main cast, they comprise much of the recurring cast.
Many of these names were familiar. For one, Newsome voiced Jessica Williams in Craig of the Creek, Quaid voiced Clark Kent / Superman in My Adventures with Superman, and Cordero voiced Jamie in Steven Universe. Lewis voiced LaBarbara Conrad in Futurama, Professor Klabrax V in Cleopatra in Space, The Chief/Tamara Fraser in Carmen Sandiego, and Fannie Granger in Spirit Riding Free. LaMarr is best known for voicing Hermes Conrad in Futurama, Virgil Hawkins / Static in Static Shock, and John Stewart / Green Lantern in Justice League, along with Sky Gunderson in Disenchantment.
Alazraquiprominently voiced Puff in The Proud Family (in the reboot/revival) and Skylar in Elena of Avalor. Winter voiced Princess Sofia Cordova for the entire Sofia the First series, in the Elena of Avalor series finale, and in Elena and the Secret of Avalor, a backdoor pilot for Elena of Avalor. Wells, O'Connell, Tataiscore, Scheer, McKenna, McBrayer, Lapkus, Tart, and Tompkins, had assorted voice roles, as well. However, this isn't counting anyone in the guest cast.
In terms of the show's music, the opening and closing themes were good, and it fits with the action. I don't recall any tracks there were necessarily memorable (apart from the opening and closing tracks). So, I'm downgrading the music score for this review. Even so, Chris Westlake did an excellent job as the series composer. The music echoes Star Trek scores in other parts of the franchise. Those who directed, wrote, storyboarded, and animated each episode, including some well-known names like Jamie Loftus, McMahan, and Grace Parra Janney, deserve plaudits for their hard work as well.
I look forward to the fifth season of Star Trek: Lower Decks. I hope that the personal identities of the main cast are explored more in the next season. I'm optimistic that Paramount executives realize the series' value. It would be devastating to have the series cancelled unceremoniously like Star Trek: Prodigy. Netflix recently nabbed that series as part of the streaming wars.
Star Trek: Lower Decks is currently streaming on Paramount+ or for purchase on PrimeVideo.

like I’m sorry but Americans do need to realize that like geography or whatever subject is being discussed at the moment only being “elective” past middle school is a very normal thing. that happens in a lot of countries. sure maybe you do them for the first two years but most schooling systems I’m familiar with split you into your streams by 11th grade at least. I was a PCM+CS student which means anything that wasn’t science non-medical I got the bare minimum CBSE education of. And like. It’s not like we did super varied stuff too? We only do world history and stuff in 9th and 10th grade and then 11+12 if you take the humanities as your subjects. Most of our education is focused on India (many criticisms of the way these subjects are taught and written about but not relevant here) but like. girl I know Sudan is a country simply because I’m not like, a 4 year old.

I finally have a referral to see a rheumatologist for my funky blood work I had a couple months ago. However, when I went to see my PCM she didn’t want to put in the referral because “she doesn’t think that’s what it is” and that I should get the chronic rash biopsied for allergies. I was allergy tested by the allergist who said you don’t have allergies based on the testing and also how the rash is presenting AND based on blood work that she did that included the allergy tests in addition to markers for autoimmune. Several of the autoimmune markers came back elevated or positive. My oncologist wants autoimmune ruled out before I change current medications. I told the PCM please call the allergist if you have concerns about why I need this referral. I also told her that I find it to be frustrating that I am given varying opinions based on every medical professional I have spoken to. I want to know what is wrong and why I break out in hives everyday unless I’m on high dose Zyrtec for something that is not an allergy. I wish my oncologist could put things in for me when I saw her yesterday she was 100% on board with seeing the rheumatologist to rule out autoimmune.

So. As a little kid, before my parents' divorce, I was absolutely living that rich kid life. Which, for me, meant being beaten constantly for stepping out of line in any way, not allowed any kind of rest, and being laughed at when I threatened to call CPS because "they won't care about you." But money wasn't a worry.
Then the divorce happened. And my mother decided that instead of getting a job, she ws going to live off our child support. And by live I mean buy every piece of silver she could get her hands on (why silver? No clue). I was paying for all my clothes (inc school uniform), my food, my phone, and anything else I needed from the time I was 14(I was lucky enough to have gotten a job as a wedding singer which paid pretty decently). Whenever I wasn't able to do so, my mother would always tell me that my father hadn't paid child support and I should ask him (which always resulted in rage because he absolutely had). I eventually learned to stop asking. Also somewhere between age 13 and 15 we were homeless because my mother insisted my father buy her a house and he refused and they played chicken so hard we ended up homeless for a year.
Then my mother insisted on sending me to the most expensive university she could get me into (I genuinely think this was just a fuck you to my farher) in a country I couldn't work in (unless it was for the school), told my father and the court my cost of living was something astronomical, and then withheld tuition til the very last minute every semester, got me to use my scholarship to pay rent, and then withheld the majority of the child support (I think I ended up with something like $300 pcm for bills/food/medical (disabled)/transport in a major city. Oh and when I eventually lost my scholarship (again, disabled) rent got added to that $300 top (at that point, I had met my partner, he was aware of the situation, and thankfully was happy to deal with rent).
She continually told me there was no money, despite sending me LITERAL SILVER GOBLETS in the mail purchased from US auctions to bring home in my suitcase so she could avoid paying customs duty.
It took me years, coaxing the divorce decree out of my father, and amateurish accounting before the rest of my family actually believed me.
Rich people are just as capable of abusing the shit out of their kids as anyone else, and the ones that do generally do so with impunity (see KellyAnne Conway posting her daughters nude on Twitter for three secs. I bet yall forgot about that one). Even the ones that don't hit their kids absolutely use money to control them, and these kids almost never get taught the skills they'd need to live without that money, to keep them more dependent on their parents.
Those kids aren't all right.
As a kid, when your parents are poor, you're poor. If they don't have money, that means none of you have money. But if someone's parents are rich, that doesn't necessarily mean the kid is. Sometimes rich peoples' kids aren't rich kids, they're just some rich freak's exotic pets that can talk but aren't allowed to.
