How Plastic Waste Handlers Can Be EPR Responsible In India?

The global consumption, usage and reckless disposal of single-use plastics like plastic cutleries, plastic bags, and plastic water bottles, have kicked in multiple environmental hazards. 

With oceans becoming an insecure place for aquatic animals, fresh lands turning into landfills dumped with plastic waste, the imposition of the EPR responsible plastic waste rule by the Central Pollution Control Board is a major success in India.   

What Is the Plastic Waste EPR Rule & how it’s Encouraging Eco-Friendly Plastic Packaging Practices?

The word EPR stands for Extended Producer’s Responsibility, which refers to all those regulations mentioned within the plastic EPR rules circulated by CPCB. The main purpose of introducing plastic waste EPR law (Extended Producer’s Responsibility) is to ensure that the Plastic Waste Processors, PIBO (Producers, Importers and Brand Owners) follow the CPCB’s guidelines in plastic packaging. Some of that EPR for plastic packaging guidelines have been shared below. 

Key EPR Plan & Guidelines for Plastic packaging In India:

Producers must be EPR responsible 

Producers must take responsibility for end-of-life management of plastic packaging, collection, recycling and malleable pliant disposal as per EPR for plastic waste management rule. Whether its collection, separation, transportation, recycling and disposal of plastic waste, it must be done as per EPR for plastic waste management rule in India mentioned by CPCB. 

Recyclable Plastic Packages should be designed

It has been found that recyclable plastics are way less harmful than the single use plastics. By designing recyclable plastic packages, the number of EPR authorised recycling facilities can also be increased throughout the states. Such initiatives can avoid harmful or complex ingredients while producing pliable substances.

Encouraging EPR authorised plastic collection points 

Some of the Indian states like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra have dedicated EPR-authorised collection points for gathering plastic waste as per EPR plan for plastic waste management. The CPCB is encouraging the EPR-responsible plastic handlers to join the initiative of increasing plastic collection points in other metropolitan cities as well.  

PIBOs must take their EPR responsibilities seriously 

The PIBOs must be registered with the Central and State Pollution Control Board to set up collection and recycling infrastructure as per EPR compliances for the plastic industry. 

The PIBOs should also meet the following compliances as well:

Meeting 25% of plastic packaging waste generated in 1st year, 70% within the second and 100% by the third year 

Promote the agenda of recycling plastic content in packaging

3. Communicate with the PWPs (Plastic Waste Processors) to develop and implement plastic EPR rules for creating awareness among plastic handlers. 

4. PIBOs should submit a detailed transparent annual report to PCBs mentioning the number of plastic packages recycled and the target met for the specific quarterly.

CPCB must monitor the enforced EPR for plastic law  

The Central Pollution Control Board Of India must monitor that all the PIBOs are implementing the plastic law mentioned in EPR guidelines. On finding any violation of EPR law for the plastic industry, strict fines & penalties are to be imposed, depending upon the extent of the law violation. 

Collaborating with PWPs to raise public awareness

The PIBOs should team up with the PWPs (Plastic Waste Processors) to raise awareness among the general public for avoiding single-use plastics. They should also associate with non-governmental and governmental bodies, municipalities, recyclers and NGOs to develop effective strategies and solutions for combating plastic pollution. 

Factors to Consider Before Buying pliable-substances From plastic-traders  

In foreign countries like Europe, informal sectors take pride in generating 58% of plastics, which are eventually recycled. If the reports are to be believed, 50% of the consumed plastic is being recycled in Europe only! The same practice has already been imposed in India too. 

In fact, it would be unjust to deny the responsibility of bulk-plastic purchasers and plastic traders while talking about EPR plastic waste compliances in the country.

Depolymerization Of plastic- The depolymerization process is another way to reuse plastics. It cuts down the polymers into monomers so that the output produced from the process can be used for the production of new plastic.

A warped printed circuit board (PCB) is one that does not sit true on a flat desktop. Although there are several reasons as to why this should happen, there are two specific causes that cause board warping. One of them is layout related, while the other is process related. If the PCB is found to be warped before the start of assembly, the problem has occurred between layout and fabrication.
