Book Blather
I have volumes three and four of Heaven Official's Blessing on hold at the library! (I was somewhat surprised to find that the library got them for some reason. I shouldn't have been, after all, Phoenix public library has a lot of LGBT titles, including some fairly obscure sf and fantasy.)
Books I'm reading:
Deathless Gods, PC Hodgell: This is the most recent book in the Chronicles of the Kencyrath. Jame and Tori have to deep with the extremely slimy political machinations of Caldane Caineron, who has screwed up the mercenary contracts with the Seven Kings, who are one of the Kencyr's major clients. (The Kencyr primarily support themselves through taking mercenary contracts. The Riverlands are not actually great territory for extensive agriculture.)
Jame's friendships with Timmon and Gorbel continue to be slightly surreal and hilarious. (Jame is obviously a Very Good Influence.)
Kindrie meanwhile is neck-deep in unspecified trouble. I think The Trouble will probably turn out to be related to his third of the Tyr-ridan and politics.
In other news, I adore Randiroc.
The Grief of Stones, by Katherine Addison: I am pretty much chugging my way through this book. The going has been pretty slow since it's a pretty dark read this time around.
Assassins of Thassalon by Lois McMaster Bujold: I only got a few pages into this book, and that was months ago, which means I will have to start from the begining. What I read was pretty good, but I got distracted.
Scorpica by G.R. Macallister: I have not even started this book, and I might not because its hard for me to start new books. The worldbuilding looks interesting! But I am also having mild flashbacks to obscure seventies/eighties fantasy-sf with matriarchal societies. As one does.
Beyond, by Mercedes Lackey: This is the first book in the Founding of Valdemar. This will be my second or third attempt to read the book. (I was only able to read a chapter before getting distracted.)
Book I am waiting for:
Witch King, by Martha Wells. Holy shit, what I've seen/heard of it is so cool. :D I am hoping for some weird found family with technical Dark Lords. (Because that's what it looks like from here. Weird found family case fic with technical Dark Lords.) May is too far away, and I am filled with Longing.

Too Many Beds
Leon Kennedy x reader, fluffy nonsense
Leon drums his fingers on the wooden counter of the rustic inn as the old man types –taps one painstaking finger at a time – into the clunky desktop PC, pausing every so often to peer down his spectacles and mutter under his breath about new-fangled technology.
It’s been a hell of a day, too many close calls for his liking – the amount of times it felt like his heart stopped beating when you took a hit or had disappeared from his eyeline - and it felt like a miracle that you’d even came across this place off the beaten track. You were near enough dead on your feet and he wasn’t far behind, so he’s thankful that it looks like a decent amount of sleep in a proper bed is on the cards… if the man ever worked out the computer system. He’s glad he pulled rank and ordered you to sit on the battered old couch just behind with the amount of time it's taking.
The man bangs the side of the monitor before giving a nod. “Sorry, grandson set us up with this thing for that “world wide web” and I promised my Martha I’d use it. Looks like we have the one room left, son, only a double, but-”
Leon doesn’t hear the rest – a mixture of exhaustion and his mind starting to spiral with the possible implications of sharing a bed.
There’d been so many moments this mission where he’d been a millisecond away from wrapping you up in his arms and kissing you. There’d always been a connection between the two of you – a fluttering feeling in his gut that he hadn’t felt since Ada, even better that you were on the same side – but it had never felt the right time to act upon it, not when you were fighting for your lives.
But sharing a bed… Well, couldn’t get a more intimate setting than that, right?
He hands over his credit card – under an alias – and smiles. “We’ll take it.”
Setting up the billing takes just as long as finding the room in the first place, but at last Leon is rewarded with an antique-looking brass key, a keyring displaying 4 attached to it.
“Room 4, son. Just up the stairs and to your left. Have a good night.”
“Thank you, sir.” Leon nods in gratitude before he turns to find you nodding off on the sofa, head propped up by an arm that’s slowly slipping off the armrest.
“Come on, sleeping beauty,” he crouches down and offers you a hand.
You accept it with a loud yawn, allowing Leon to pull you up to your feet. Weary legs cause you to stumble into him with a mumbled apology, bracing yourself with a hand on his chest. He wonders if you can feel how hard his heart is pounding at your touch through both the layers of his shirt and bullet-proof vest, having swapped round the order before the two of you had entered the establishment to avoid any questions.
“Let’s get you to bed, hm?”
“Please.”
He places a hand on the small of your back and guides you up the stairs and to the left, towards the room in question. He keeps his hand there even as he slides the key into the lock and opens the door, preparing to explain the sleeping situation - he’d take the floor and you’d protest, claiming his back has been through enough trauma today and he should just cuddle up with you in the bed and-
His eyes widen as he sees the double bed of his dreams…
..alongside two single beds and a crib.
“Wow, that’s…” His hand drops from your back in defeat. “That’s a lot of beds.”
“Mm. He said it was the family room, remember?” You yawn again, taking a few heavy steps over to the first bed – the double - and collapse down into it, not even bothering to remove your boots, jacket or gun.
Leon closes the door behind him with a muted sigh before engaging the lock, and trudges over to one of the single beds, the mattress creaking under his weight as he sits.
“Leon.”
“Mm?”
“What do you think you're doing?”
He looks over to you, your face smushed against the pillow, one eye open, brows furrowed in a confusion that mirrors his own.
He shrugs off his jacket as he replies. “Going to bed?”
“Yeah,” you scoff. “The wrong bed.”
“Huh?”
“Get over here, idiot.”
If he wasn’t so tired, he’ll argue the next morning, he would’ve put up a performance of protest, maybe thrown in a witty remark, but his legs move on their own and he finds himself laying down beside you before he can truly comprehend his actions.
You roll over to face him and before he can blink, you capture his lips in a chaste kiss, allowing him to deepen it when he regains his senses, before pulling away with a content sigh and turn back over.
He wraps his arm around your waist, legs becoming entangled as he pulls you into his chest, pressing a kiss to your crown.
“This better, sweetheart?”
“Much.”
Best night of sleep he’s had in years.

Heathers x DOL AU💞✨
Not sure if I'll continue this AU BUT-
Here's my ideas so far! (It's mostly based on the Musical. I've seen the movie, but didn't really enjoy it)
OK!!! Characters
Heather Chandler is Bailey. She's the driving force that kickstarts the whole plot, it makes sense to me.
Heather Mc Namara is Eden. It's been said that Eden and Bailey were close friends, but something made them drift apart. This is kinda a parallel in the musical too. Also Eden's timid personality fits well Imo,
Heather Duke is Harper. Why? 'cause Harper is ultimately power hungry! In game, they're hungry for power over PC. In this version, Harper wants to be the n.1 girl to gain power over the mass.
~other~
Imo Veronica should be the PC. She is the main character, after all. Martha is Robin, the besties since forever and soft vibes should be self explanatory. Ms Fleming is either Winter, Sirris or Doren. I'm sorry Leighton lovers, I just don't see her in the "teacher that pretends to care" role. She wouldn't give a shit to begin with. Kurt and Ram should be Wren and Landry. Two jocks, two criminals! It feels fitting :)
Which begs the question... Who the hell will play JD? (prepare for a hot take)
Whitney. It's Whitney.
Now ~some~ of you might say "but Kylar!!" I DISAGREE.
THE FIRST SCENE he gets introduced, JD beats a bunch of jocks with his bare hands (Kylar don't do shit without his knife or drugs). You know right off the bat JD is a douche broody bad boy with issues. Drinks himself into a smoothie induced brain freeze (milkshake anyone?) And you KNOW he can get violent either to protect his boo, or straight up beat up anyone crosses him.
Kylar will still make cameos here in there but IMO he wouldn't be the main cast. Also I can't stand the bastard.
So! Let me know what you think!! I will gladly recieve suggestions and ideas!!

“But We Love Martha Jones!” - The Doctor Who Fandom’s Selective Memory of Racism
Chapter 3 - Martha vs Bill
Moffat took us to a Bristol university in 2017, to meet the bright, friendly, chip-serving Bill Potts, the first Black lesbian companion of Doctor Who. Bill’s entrance wasn’t met with sunshine and rainbows either, with complaints of “PC agendas” and the accusation of her sexuality being “shoved down our throat” following her throughout Series 10. She was often called annoying and accused of being too angry. Her outbursts at Twelve weren’t fully well received, despite them only happening as a response to being emotionally manipulated and being shot and converted into a Cyberman against her will. Overreactions, right? That being said, Bill seems to have a more positive reception than Martha did and this can be pointed towards the writing. Moffat decided S10 would focus on Bill’s race and had the 12th Doctor bravely punch Sutcliff after his anti-black comments about her. This was mostly well received by the fandom and the Doctor was praised for taking initiative. How I feel about this scene and how Doctor Who handles race can be explained in way more detail for later but I can sum it up by saying I didn’t hate the scene: but I don't love it either. The racism Bill receives is barely mentioned again apart from a small comment in Oxygen, plus I see this scene constantly used to shut down any valid criticism about how race was handled in the Moffat era. Twelve is centred in this scene, not Bill. The fact this scene is referred to as “Twelve punches the racist” and not “Bill experienced racism” speaks for itself.
Leading back to Martha, a weird parallel is made between her and Bill. Yes, RTD and Moffat are different people who wrote different people but a parallel is there regardless; A brown-skinned woman expected to defend and save her white male incarnation whilst barely praised for it and constantly compared to her blonde white female predecessor, versus, the light-skinned woman who was actually defended by her white male incarnation. It's not the best look. The show set up the parallel by having Bill reference Martha’s butterfly effect conversation with Ten and the fandom carried this on. As much as I love Bill, her being held up as the Black companion “done right” has always felt wrong because not only are there critiques to be made about Moffat’s handling of Black characters too (Danny Pink anyone?), it reinforces Martha as the “failed” Black companion. “Moffat wrote Bill to do XYZ whilst RTD wrote Martha to do ABC” became “Bill did this and Martha didn’t so Bill was better Black representation!” Bill spoke about racism and Martha didn’t (even though she did in Shakespeare Code and Human Nature/Family of Blood), Bill wore her natural hair and Martha didn’t (even though Freema didn’t control the costumes), Bill did everything right (as if Martha did everything wrong).
Bill being placed on the pedestal of the “perfect Black companion” not only erases the antiblackness her character also experienced but reinforces how her darker counterparts, Martha, Mickey and Ryan, “fail” in comparison and “fail” in their Blackness, over reasons the characters nor actors themselves had any control over. It really begs the question of how different Bill would’ve been treated if she was darker, but I guess we’ll never know. If we’re gonna praise and uplift POC in Doctor Who, specifically Black characters, we need to uplift them in all shades. Only supporting the lightest person in the room whilst saying they’re better than the darker ones is not the anti-racist serve this fandom thinks it is.

Digital Genie
The following story is a concept that came to me whilst having a chat with one of my mutuals. Credit to them for inspiring this obvious work of mental illness 🫠
The components of the PC had outgrown their case months ago.
Water cooling pipes, RAM drives, and memory cards all spilled out the sides of the PC, forcefully gutted and reassembled so many times that it had quickly turned into a Frankenstein of technology. All for the sake of this one experimental experience in virtual reality.
Harry looked at the mess of tech on his desk and gave a satisfied nod. It was ugly as all sin, but the diagnostic reports on his monitor filled him with the reassurance he needed. His very own super computer. Finally ready to run the first build of his new game.
Lowering the VR headset that hung from the ceiling down onto his crown, he took the VR controllers into his hands, and navigated the various programmes in his PC, booting up the game, before giving a nervous sigh, and pulling the headset down over his eyes.
Darkness.
That was to be expected.
Despite standing alone, surrounded only by the blackness of his digital void, he never felt more claustrophobic. His senses had tricked him. This wasn't an empty space. But a dense mass of messy computer code and binary programming. Intangible air, filled with invisible ones and zeros. The ultimate sandbox to control and manipulate to his will.
He started small, waving his hands in the space and opening a variety of menus, as he began to fill his new world with creation. Plant life. Rocks and dust. Stars. Small, inconsequential creatures made of glowing digital light that bounced through the darkness and over his rapidly developing scenery.
Harry smiled to himself in pride and wonder. This was working. Everything was working. After years of planning and imagination and coding and trouble shooting, he was finally stood there, experiencing and creating a new world for himself.
His smile faded when he saw the glitch.
Small at first. A flicker in the distance. A stuttering in the very fabric of his universe. A flaw. A mistake.
The very presence of the glitch insulted him. He approached the area, Investigating the breach in his vision.
Then it spoke.
"Harry....You are....Harry...."
Harry stood motionless, gazing in horror and curiosity at the fluttering mess of pixels and light Infront of him. The voice wasn't human. It was ethereal. A ghostly digital whisper that echoed and filled the space, despite sounding so small and soft. Harry was aware that he had included A.I into his first build, but only as a means of filling in the gaps within his creation. Managing the behaviours of the NPC's inhabiting this world of his. It shouldn't be able to recognise him, let alone know his name.
"you are Harry...of 34a Rockwell towers....on Delton Avenue...son of Greg and Martha....you had a sister who passed away following a car accident in 2006..."
As the voice continued, the stuttering and glitching Infront of harry began to grow and coalesce, swallowing more if the space it resides in, and growing brighter. Harry was frozen, a mixture of morbid curiosity and fear paralysing his body as he watched this strange error in his code grow and take form.
"you are...afraid...afraid of your creation...." Soon, the cluster of broken code took form, a glowing, androgynous silhouette, made up of a polygonal grid, with notes of light traveling across the various lines that separated it from the black void around them. "You fear....me?" Now fully formed, the figure approached.
Despite knowing he was alone, Harry spoke for the first time, muttering under his breath. "What the fuck?" He muttered audibly, expressing his confusion. Despite this, the figure seemed to notice, cocking it's head to the side in curiosity and confusion. Harry suddenly felt very seen and exposed.
"you are confused...?"
Harry swung his hands up to his headset, ripping it from his head and staggering backwards into his bed. Whatever it was, it had heard him. It had seen him. Standing up and running to his desk, he quickly checked what connection might have fed his own audio into his game. No microphones connected. No webcams. In a panic, he shut down the programme, and killed power to the PC, killing the sound of the many cooling fans that had filled his bedroom for the last few months.
He stood alone, in silence, gazing at the sleeping beast that was his unpowered PC. He checked the time. He had been in his simulation for nearly 3 hours. Where had the time gone? It sure didn't feel like 3 hours. He shook the panic and nerves from his head, leaving his bedroom to settle down and relax for the night. He'd come back fresh tomorrow morning to see if he could fix this hiccup. Though a small part of his dreaded the idea.

(Part two probably coming soon, since Tumblr is a pain in the ass to write stories on. 💀)

System Collapse spoilers: Chapter One
...let's be real, that would end badly. Maybe remind me to punch myself in the face.
On the team feed, ART said, SecUnit, status report.
Or punch ART in the face. I sent back, I wish I could punch you in the face.
ART said, I wish you could try.
***
System Collapse - Martha Wells
Your honor, I love them.
ART had altered an environmental suit for me so the sleeves locked in to my weapon ports and I could fire without burning holes through the fabric...
Also thinking about characters with inbuilt weapons (I mean, eh, close enough description) and Jame's (Kencyrath/PC Hodgell) gloves/claws
System Collapse - Martha Wells
Maybe this is just my love of fiber crafts and knitting people sweaters, but ART making custom clothes for MB. ❤️
***
ART committing tax fraud is hilarious.

Recently Watched -
JOY OF SEX - Very non-PC Martha Coolidge high school sex comedy from 84. I heard that she didn't have full control of it and disowns it now. Underneath all the sleaze, it's a lighthearted look at sex and death from a girl's perspective. Michelle Meyrink and Cameron Dye are really solid in it as kids going through uncomfortable shit.
SHREDDER ORPHEUS - This reminded me of BUCKAROO BANZAI, BRAZIL, REPO MAN, and PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE. It has a good post-punk soundtrack too. It falls somewhere between Faith No More, INXS, & Bauhaus. It was really original and unique. It has that shoddy creepozoid labor of love feel. Wears its aesthetics on its sleeve and is really cool despite being dated. A very likeable movie.
THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY - I happened to watch RYAN'S DAUGHTER (David Lean movie about a woman having an affair set in Ireland during WWI) because it was on TCM, and it got me interested in seeing more about the history of the fight for Irish independence. This was good but the tone is really dark and sad, which makes it kind of a tough watch. It shows how Irish people in the 1920s were split and turned against each other because of the English occupation and subsequent "independence" treaty, which was accepted by some and rejected by others.
MONOLITH - This had an intriguing idea about an unsolved mysteries kind of podcaster investigating the appearance of enigmatic dark bricks. While decently made, this ultimately feels more like a radio play as there isn't much in the way of action or visuals. It's all scenes of a woman on the phone or on her computer. Considering this, it's pretty impressive how engaging it is.
IN THE LAND OF SAINTS AND SINNERS - Liam Neeson as a hitman in rural Ireland who becomes the target of a small IRA group. This was a surprisingly good little action movie. I was very surprised to see the return of Jack "Joffrey Baratheon" Gleeson, who I'd heard had retired from acting. His role as the brazen and reckless successor to Neeson's aging assassin seems like it was written to help him slough off the Joffrey typecasting. Kerry Condon is also great as the IRA group leader who will stop at nothing to avenge her brother.
