Today was P’s “last” day of school. Amazing to see how much he’s grown in so many ways. Enrolling him in preschool was the best decision ever. He’s learned so much. And he was blessed with incredible teachers (esp Ms. Jackie!) who showed him love everyday! 10 years later...our families have grown, we have infinitely more responsibilities, we (probably?) drink a little less, we’re in bed by 9pm, we have a lot more worries, we smile and laugh just as much and we make it a priority to see each other every month. #GVDPC Day 15: “Who Do You Love?” I’m excited to finally finish the Going Viral Daily Photography Challenge! Even though it took me longer than 15 days to complete, I’m thankful for the distraction and for the opportunity to take even more photos of my little P! When I think about who I love, Brisa and P are at the top of my list. Regardless of the fact that P transformed from an angelic 2 year old to a tantrum filled threenager, I still love him so much. I love that Brisa’s love for horses has transferred over to P. He thoroughly enjoys visiting the barn and seeing Stormy. #GVDPC Day 14: “Pets” After P was born, within 6 months we lost #FritzHsieh and #PazHsieh. Awhile later, we adopted #TacocatHsieh and #HatchChileHsieh so that they could all grow up together. P dearly loves them both. It’s so sweet to see them interact and play! I was planning on using a photo I took of the dogs from earlier today, but then this happened. Brisa was showing a story time on her phone from P’s pre-school teacher when Tacocat and Hatch decided to join them too. #GVDPC Day 11: “Family” When I was a kid, my dad would always wash our cars. When I was old enough, I helped him wash our cars. When P was old enough, he started helping me wash our cars. Today, he wanted to wash his own car. I never thought of car washing being a generational family thing, but I love how much P loves washing cars. It brings me so much joy because of how much I love cars which I’m sure was passed down to me from my dad! What absolutely KILLS me about this photo is that P is sitting down while washing his car. He’s definitely inherited his dad’s coveted work ethic! =) I purposely set the car in the direct sun so that I could use a fast shutter speed to freeze the soap spray. #GVDPC Day 10: “Selective Focus” One of my favorite things to watch is P and Brisa’s mother-son time together. P loves baking with Brisa. He loves the frosting. The cake batter. The sprinkles. And obviously the cake. Brisa works so hard and for so many hours that moments like this are just so precious. She doesn’t get to experience as many things with P because she’s tirelessly working to care for our family. Honestly, we’d be lost without her. As P and Brisa were making the cake, there’s such an innocent joy in P’s eyes as he watches the ingredients become a batter. I wanted to shoot through something to add depth and frame their interaction more dramatically. #GVDPC Day 9: “Motion” In all of my portrait work, one of the consistent themes is movement. I feel like there is an inherent beauty to people in motion. They are less focused on being photographed and more focused on wherever they are headed. Magically, awkward hands, unflattering chins and utter annoyance about being photographed are simply forgotten. All that is left are moments of genuine expression and interaction. P moves. A lot. It’s quite rare when he’s sitting still. My camera struggled a lot (thanks Canon) to focus on P because of how fast he was moving in the dark. But I was able to catch him this one time and it’s perfectly P. Huge smile. Tongue out. Legs and arms flailing everywhere. #GVDPC Day 9: Black & White: Love is unrelenting pressure and unmet expectations. Love is scream-into-a-pillow frustration. Love is selfish. Love is incredibly difficult. What makes the concept of love so tantalizingly challenging to attain is that before you can genuinely love someone else, you must figure out how to love yourself first. Love is the greatest possession we experience in our lifetime. I feel incredibly blessed to be able to engulf P with my all encompassing, never compromising love. Even when he's acting ballistically irrational, I already look back at those instances with fondness because I know that's just part of him developing as a person. Brisa created this LOVE gorgeous mosaic out of chalk today. I envisioned this joyous photo of P happily interacting with it, but he was grumpy and didn't want anything to do with performing for the camera. And yet, I love this final image because of his little toes, his sunken shoulders and how he is literally surrounded by love. Day 7: Joy - Brisa decided to create a giant heart mosaic on our driveway today. I had no idea what she was doing when she started, but I typically trust her on things like this! With Paxton’s help, they created this awesome chalk mosaic! For the photo, I wanted to show how large the mosaic is while showing the joyfulness between Brisa and P. Day 6: Frame within a Frame - Day late on this one! Lately, P hasn’t been loving baths. So we’ve tried to play fun games and pretend stories to keep him in the bathtub for any length of time. Hatch always loves joining P in the bathroom during bath time. I’m actually shocked he hasn’t jumped in yet! I photographed P and Hatch’s butt from the hallway through the bathroom door and reflected through the mirror. Day 5: Play - We’re starting to get a bit stir crazy around here and so P and I decided it was time to bust out his favorite pineapple sprinkler for some afternoon fun! I really wanted him to jump over the sprinkler (and through the water), but he was a little too scared and I think the water a bit too cold. Day 4: Water - There’s water in wine, right? Initially, I wanted to photograph our wedding rings splashing in a glass of water, but after one attempt, I realized that I wasn’t going to have the patience to create what I wanted. So I resorted to pouring water. Which wasn’t all that exciting. Switched to wine for some color. Ended up shattering a wine glass.
