年度末日は休日。遅くまで寝ていて、起きてからすぐドジャーズの試合中継を観る。山本由伸が好投するも大雨で中断。一方こちらは快晴で春のような陽気。久しぶりに洗車する。ただ爪が甘く水垢のような汚れが落ちておらず妻に指摘されて拭き直す。終わったあとはコーヒーとお菓子、からの昼ごはん。そして14時からはプロ野球中継を観る。テレビ神奈川で放送していなかったためU-NEXTでしばらく観ていたが、受信の調子が悪くなんども途中で止まりやり直し。うんざりしながら観ていたが、イニング終わりの画面に見覚えがあり、ひょっとしてとBS-TBSにチャンネルを変えると、案の定同じ放送がやっていた。そのまま観ていると、妻がヨガに出かけるからその間に映画を観ていれば、というので、劣勢のDeNAの逆転を信じて、いや実のところ見限ったのだと思うが、とにかく昨日購入した『小説家の映画』を観始める。これまた画面がひっきりなしにストップするためイライラする。序盤寝てしまうがそこからはほぼ一気に（最後の最後だけ妻を迎えに行って帰ってきたあとに観た）鑑賞。その後『バナナマンのせっかくグルメ』を観ながら晩御飯を食べ、お菓子を食べてから、妻がドラマを観ている隣でコーネリアスを聴きながらノリノリで指をパチパチ鳴らしていたら怒られて、しばらく一階の自部屋で、YouTubeで小山田圭吾や小沢健二の昔のラジオ番組を聴いたり、しばらく積読になっていたフィル・スペクターの伝記を読みながら過ごす。

さて3月のまとめ。体重は先月より1キロ以上増えてしまう。1月から2月も約1キロ増だったので、ここらで止めなければ。映画はたったの11本。家で仕事をすることが多かったせいだろう。ただ、そのほとんどが甲乙つけづらいほど印象深い作品で、今月の一本が決められない。うーん、ただ世評が低いのに個人的にグッときた作品ということで、やはり『俺らのマブダチ　リッキー・スタニッキー』を推そうかな。

映画

1. 小説家の映画 / ホン・サンス　★

映画監督であるホン・サンスにとって、作中の小説家の言葉や態度は噴飯ものだろう。接する人間が彼女に敬意を示しながらもどこか腫れ物に触れるような扱いをしていること、そして映画を観終わったあとの主演女優のうんざりした表情からそれがうかがえる。小説家の映画には「小説家の」という修飾語がつくものなのだ、という思いが込められているにちがいない。それがこれほど（一見）のっぺりしとた会話劇として表現される凄み。

In 1982, Chris Spheeris and Paul Voudouris recorded and privately released an album of new age spirituality entitled Passage, one that did not sell well at the time but has since grown into a highly sought classic of American space music (thus leading to this essential and loving reissue by Emotional Rescue and Mountains in the Sea). The genesis of the album was an invitation by some forgotten biofeedback company to compose therapeutic music intended to help treat nervous disorders…a concept which helped pushed the duo far beyond their progressive folk-rock roots into realms of longform sonic serenity. And Spheeris and Voudouris approached the task with great care and sincerity, even spending time constructing detailed diagrams in order to perfectly map out their journey of vibratory healing. 

Once ready, they invited in Vince Andrae on additional synthesizer and recorded the whole of Passage in one day with no overdubs…a fact that’s all the more remarkable given how beautifully constructed and densely layered the whole thing is. And there’s a distinct progression of vibe and mood across album, which speaks to the way Spheeris and Voudouris envisioned the music working on the psyche: first comes “Prism” and its aquatic bass swells and webs of crystal arp mesmerism…a shimmering and hyperactive world meant to meet the listener at the same level of stress and anxiety with which they enter; then “Mosaic” calms the soul with meditative dripping sounds, sci-fi filter sweeps, and ghostly layers of synthesis billowing like ocean fog; finally, “Passage” leads the spirit towards celestial transcendence with softly smoldering hazes of rainbow drone minimalism. 

Chris Spheeris ~ Paul Voudouris - Passage (Emotional Rescue / Mountains in the Sea, 2019) The rapidly flowing synthesizer arpeggiations of “Prism” are like vortices made from myriad bubbles…all cycling through a deep sea expanse with slow motion filter sweeps bringing the patterns in and out of focus. Starlight string drones hover in the air while reverb and resonance fx dance throughout the spectrum and at some point, Spheeris’ fingerpicked electric guitar fades in from the depths with methodical webs of gleaming crystal that create mesmerizing polyrhythms as they play off the ever-morphing synth spirals. Ghostly whistle tones flutter softly and echo fx mystically modulate while occasionally subsuming the mix in a world of diamond-toned shimmer and the way the plucked tones of heavenly light intermingle with aquatic space atmospherics recalls strongly the work of Laraaji (especially his recent collaboration with Seahawks). Towards the second half of the song, whale drone lullabies are generated by slowly swelling cello synthesis…these euphoric and ever evolving currents that ease the mind and help to counteract the hyperactive and increasingly blurred gemstone soundbath with layers of meditative bass ambiance. And as the track comes to a close, the crystalline guitar layers recede, leaving galactic synthesizer sequences to waver like a mirage while massive waves of pitch-bending synthesis seek out the sky.

“Mosaic” follows with towering streaks of electronic spiritualism washing in and out…like some mythical orchestra of tamburas and harmoniums emanating from the center of all existence. The slowly breathing and vocal filter sweeps are intertwined with majestic string swells whose haunted decays lingers before bending into a psychedelic fog and dripping and clacking sounds move throughout the background, perhaps generated by Voudouris’ bamboo. Otherworldly bodies of fluid seem to hover in place while oscillating strangely and atonal feedback drones arc into the air while weaving melodies of cold cosmic grandiosity as the track pays tribute to Klaus Schulze’s Irrlicht and Tangerine Dream’s Zeit, with the trio creating a dense world of overlapping sonics and alien resonances. Elsewhere, synthesizers imitate the ethereal spiritualisms of Gregorian monks, only as if singing out from the ocean floor. Or perhaps they sound like a choir of angels within a darkly glowing body of gas…their waves of harmony and currents of dissonance intermingling. Mind-melting blasts of synthesis flow in from every direction as the song executes a barely perceptible climbs towards slowburn symphonic maximilaism and all the while, understate fx work the mind on a subconscious level with subliminal psychedelics and hidden layers of sonic healing.

“Passage” begins with primordial drones rising from the core of the Earth and moving through deep filter distortions and wavering modulations. Desert guitars scratch out shadow atmospheres and bleary-eyed orchestras evoke rainbow colorations smothered in burning smoke. Rattling bell tones are smeared into a delirium haze and overlapping resonances bring to mind the spiritual intonations of a Tibetan singing bowl while a dreamworld melody develops beneath the pearlescent cloud atmospheres. The vibes of radiant new age magic and balearic wonderment recall Hatchback as well as Iury Lech, with obscured piano leads decaying through a lush landscape of pink and gold. And as the track progresses, time spreads out, slows down, then stops altogether, leaving the soul afloat in a paradise of affirming transcendence. Other than oceanic waves of sea-blue ambiance that repeatedly crash to shore, there is little in the way of rhythm or pattern to latch onto, with the trio instead preferring amorphous and immersive layers of synthesis to guide the spirit towards bliss. Sometimes, feedback oscillations break from the ethereal tapestry…these white light streaks of rotating sonic ecstasy that seem to wrap around the mind...while longform movements and soft swell motions are created from chance overlappings. It’s the kind of harmonious sound that only comes from a group of souls in complete communion and their deeply affecting gifts of universal peace and cosmic love serve as an eternal salve for the weariness of the world.
