哥本哈根 Day 4: Christiania & CC

那天天气不错，连续几天阴天，终于迎来了太阳。遂决定逛逛传说中的 Christiania。

Christiania 是一个「自由城」，于 1971 年成立。从我所住的 Christianshavn 走过去，不过十分钟左右的时间。其具体的法律地位我也不得而知，但是在里面的只要走一番，便可从气氛里知道它们的居民享有相当的自由。事实上，它并没有一个明显的边界。只要跨过这毫不起眼的马路，就正式进入 Christiania 地盘了。 

Christiania 的「博物馆」是值得一去的。它是一个由咖啡厅、live house、商店、储藏室等构成的一个 complex。与我平时多见的光鲜亮丽的博物馆不同的是，它老旧且欠修缮，仿佛是随意将一个破旧厂房直接改装而不加翻修而成的。可以看出，这里的 owner 是在资源紧张匮乏的条件下尽力将这些功能组合到这个建筑里。一切都以实用主义设计。

Christiania 是不受市政府管辖的，因此法律也不适用。所以 Christiania 居民有着自己约定的 Common Law。若仔细阅读，还蛮有趣的。

其实在 Christiania 多少可以窥见如果人类社会生产力遭受重创的假想情况。他们有着自己简陋的回收设施，有核心商业街，也有专门吸大麻、不许摄影的街道（在那里我见到了一个大叔蹲在一个 bench 上，一口叼了三根）。

如果你漫步在 Christiania，会慢慢发现「🟡 🟡 🟡」以各种形式出现在形形色色的物件上。这便是 Christiania 的 logo。

Christiania 地方也不算特别大，走着走着就来到了护城河边。在天气好的下午，河堤上总有成对的人在上面分享一只烟，或是各抽一支（或许是大麻）。

在河边散步是一件非常惬意的事情。时不时总能遇到散步的行人，还有主人带出来的小猫咪。

作为半个明尼苏达人，这里的冬天简直显得生意盎然。对于北欧地区来说，纬度比明尼苏达还要高，非常不像话。

北欧的短日照让我的时间感有些错乱，也不知道在 Christiania 逛了多久。我最终的目的地是位于相对北部的 CC。既然太阳还在，决定步行过去。事实上也不虚此行，一路上有许多看似寻常却 mildly interesting 的建筑。用随身带的 Rollei 35 + Rollei Paul & Reinhold 640 拍了不少照片。途中也路过了 Royal Danish Academy 的建筑系，看了一下学生作品展。

走了许久，赶到 CC 时已经快要日落了。因为没有手套，手也即将冻僵。正好进入 CC 避寒。

CC 是一个巨大的展厅。这次有两个 interactive 的展览，分别是 Doug Wheeler 的 「LC 71 NY DZ 13 DW」和 James Turrell 的 「AFTERSHOCK」。这两个展都非常值得体验。可惜这两个展都不许拍照，虽然拍照也难以展现沉浸式体验 1/1000 的妙处。

待我从 CC 出来，太阳已经下山。月亮升了起来。

后记

出来后，因为路途遥远，想改搭公交回去。除了在地铁站之外，我还没有试过哥本哈根的公交系统。先是试了地图上 suggest 的渡轮，发现无法使用信用卡支付船票，只好改坐大巴。来到车站，已经有许多人在等车了。随机问了一个印度人（与他同行的还有一个澳大利亚人，似乎是同事）是否能用信用卡直接买票，被告知不行，建议下载一个叫 「DOT」的 app。因为我的手机号不支持漫游且 Google Fi 不支持短信验证，我没法注册 DOT 账号。印度人爽快地让我用他的手机号注册了 DOT。不知为什么，那天大巴迟迟未来。后来蹭了他们两个的的士才得以舒服地回到酒店附近。

虽然太阳已经下山，但是时间还早，于是又逛了附近一个叫 Overgaden 的 gallery 才回酒店。

不得不感慨哥本哈根的艺术浓度和质量，令我这个明尼苏达乡下人啧啧称奇。

Paul Young has an interesting discography and he still carries on with his music, though I would claim that Good Thing, his latest, might be a bit too much of that with the covers of his influences. While I would claim Paul Young continues to show he remains a great vocalist, I really wish more producers of different idioms would contact him, the record suffers from a return to form syndrome, since the LP belongs into the category of disc which many see as those where the musicians reach the comeback to their heights. Sadly, some of these don't achieve this lofty goal and Good Thing does feel like that. True, Paul Young makes us remember his early triumphs, yet he rarely uses any of the idiosyncratic elements of them, he merely does a fine facsimile of his successes.

Cara Clarinha,

Last week I was in Seattle, a big and interesting city, there to do a bit of final mixing on Pequenos Milagres, and to record some music for another piece.   The mix went well and it is now, with the voice over, much more audible.  Thanks to friend Steve Peters for that.  And then recorded some music for the Yellowstone Canyon film, cello played by Lori Goldston, with a bit of there/gone feedback included.  Likely that music will wander into other things as well.

While there visited the Henry Gallery, a museum connected with the university and saw a few exhibitions, one a sprawling one filling the entire floor with what I think of as an academic art of the sort that exists only because art schools and critics exist.  Utterly forgettable, a kind of literature never meant to be read.

And then another woman, Cecilia Vicuña, working in Chile and New York.  Her work was interesting and “fun”, and reminded me of Paul Klee and Alexander Calder – playful, not serious.  Many of her pieces were very small.  I like these kinds of things, though I do not consider them “art” but more in the world of design or graphics.  Pleasurable, but nothing that cuts deep into the soul.

  She also had a hanging work, with long pieces of cloth in a circle, going up 5 meters or so.  Like the small pieces, it was pleasant and enticing, but craft, not art.

I also stopped by the James Turrell Sky Room at the museum:

After four days I returned on the ferry and bus, back to Port Angeles, back to Carver country” to ponder a bit more on that.  I visited his grave again and shot more pages of the little book there.  And thought some more.

  And on getting back had a most wonderful meal – the best lamb I have ever had – cooked by Steve, whose place I am staying at.  Before going to Seattle I had trimmed his 3 meter high hedges, up on a ladder with an electric chainsaw, working out my muscles in a manner which I hadn’t done in a while.  There was other yard work done, and now my body is sore – a good kind of soreness though.  And feeling not bad for 76 years.

While in Seattle I brought to a close the original reason for my journey back to the USA, the proposal to make a film here with certain promises made, but over the summer it was already clear that things would not unfold in the way described, and I decided to bring it to a stop.  I had come to America knowing that could happen as easily as not, so I am not bothered by it at all.  Instead I’ll try to make another film with Steve in Port Angeles, centered around his work as a mental health therapist.  And work with other things already shot, some many years ago, some new.

Still nothing really firm on other possible things, though both the Kolkata workshop and the Cuban one are looking likely.  Like all these things they can disappear in a moment. Meantime I wait and am patient.

In Portland now for the weekend and then return to Port Angeles where I will be alone for 10 days, and hope to try again to paint again, as well as work on editing and other things – photography projects, video things, and music.

Oh – a big surprise !  I have been asked to sing my country-western/folk songs at next summer’s Ravenna music festival!  I need to have 10 songs down well, which should be no problem.  And the albums recorded with Christian Ravaglioli should be released soon, or so he tells me.  Though soon in Italy (like Portugal) can be a long time !

And that is my news of the moment.  I hope school is going well, and that you are happy with friends and Tiago.  And of course I hope to hear from you, but again, I am patient.

CURANDO LA CASA

Sobre Houston esquina con Bowery se ubica el icónico espectacular de Calvin Klein, en esta ocasión la modelo Gigi Hadid viste unos jeans y tres calzoncillos que sobresalen, desnuda de la cintura para arriba, cubre sus pechos con el cabello a la Brooke Shields en La laguna azul. A unas cuadras de ahí, sobre Bond Street se encuentra su nuevo departamento, un lugar espacioso con dos pisos, ventanas a la calle y una terraza. Durante el 2019 la modelo empleó su tiempo libre curando este espacio. En palabras suyas “Spent all of last year designing and curating my passion project/dream spot”. Amén de lo mal que contrastan los cojines estampados de Jean Paul Gaultier sobre los sillones de tejido de punto Missoni, la alusión a Warren Buffet con las portadas de The New Yorker en el baño o la pluma amarilla gigante de Think Big -out of nowhere-, me gustaría repasar aquí las piezas de arte que ella eligió para decorar su morada.

La primera pieza que veo está en la sala, a un lado del televisor, se trata de una pintura abstracta de Austyn Weyner titulada Starry Fucking Night, se presenta en un formato no convencional con seis lados irregulares, sobre un fondo oscuro hay formas orgánicas pequeñas y amarillas, aunque más que estrellas veo frutas partidas a la mitad, diría que zapotes amarillos repetidos por todo el cuadro. La artista dibuja los contornos y sobre la misma tonalidad va rellenando en capas hacia el centro. Otra pieza, que incluyo aquí por que la misma Hadid la presenta como obra de arte y la creadora se denomina artista, son las puertas de los anaqueles de la cocina forrados con pasta de distintos colores. Penne, farfalles, y fetuccini entintados con verde, azul, amarillo y anaranjado. La “artista de la pasta” es Linda Miller Nicholson, quien sorpresivamente declara que este proyecto le tomó seis semanas.

Siguiendo hacia el fondo, al lado de la puerta del baño se lee un mensaje de bienvenida proveniente de una pieza de Eamon Harrington: Welcome - All ages, all colors, all sizes, all cultures, all genders, all beliefs, all religions, all types, all people, safe here. La propuesta de Eamon es poco interesante, se caracteriza por retomar la violencia e instantaneidad de las pintas de protesta callejeras sin aportar nada más, y aunque tiene piezas más atractivas, Gigi eligió esta con fondo rojo, que se puede pedir también en distintos colores y medidas.

En la cuenta de Instagram de la modelo, desde donde realizo ahora esta visita, encuentro dos piezas más de Austyn Weyner, una en el descanso de la escalera y otra en el pasillo, pero no se aprecian bien. Googleo “modelo gigi arte” para conseguir más imágenes y me aparece en la pantalla Kendall Jenner junto a un James Turrell. El hallazgo me hace pensar que elegí a la modelo equivocada para visitar su casa. La casa de Kendall en Hollywood es una clásica representante del estilo californiano. Mientras más scrolleo más me fascina. Esta vez es por medio de Architectural Digest que logro entrar y ver ese fantástico halo de luz rosa de Turrell puesto así nomás, al lado de la puerta de entrada principal. Pienso que seguro proviene de la Pace Gallery, se puede programar en el color que prefieras, es perfecto para una casa en la que dominan los colores neutros y las formas orgánicas como esta. En la sala de estar, detrás de unos arcos anodinos veo un binomio de Barbara Kruger (Good/Evil) que seguro compró en Art Basel Miami; ella y sus hermanas son asiduas visitantes de esta feria. Hay alberca, jardín, terrazas y grandes ventanales. Un salón de belleza y un taller de pintura, con un caballete del siglo XIX, para que la modelo se despeje pintando. Un espacio muy particular es la pequeña sala que antecede al dormitorio. De un lado cuelgan un par de puertas italianas del siglo XVIII pintadas a mano y de imitación bizantina. Del otro un letrero-escultura neón de Tracey Emin con las medidas del pene, el largo y grueso, de un ex novio de la artista.

Otra edición de Architectural Digest la protagonizan Kim Kardashian y Kanye West. Recién mudados han remodelado una vieja casa en Calabasas California, alejados del ajetreo mundano. Todo es blanco en el "monasterio belga futurista", como lo llama Kanye. Techos infinitos, espacios pálidos y vacíos. Aquí no hay lugar para los viejos y llamativos Jeff Koons. Lo que sí veo es obra de un artista más espiritual,  Anish Kapoor, una pieza circular de la serie White Dark. Que decepción saber que es de fibra de vidrio esta pieza cuyo acabado parece mármol de Macael. Uno de los grandes salones de esta casa minimal está destinado a una pieza textil habitable de Isabel Rower, es de gran escala y algo parecida a un pulpo gigante, una especie híbrida entre Ernesto Neto y Raíces de Rivelino. Para su casa Kim no escatima en adjetivos: "un refugio familiar salvajemente idiosincrático", un “monasterio minimalista”.  A la pregunta de cómo llamaría al salón donde habita la pieza de Isabel Rower, si instalación artística o sala de juegos, Kanye West responde: “Todo lo que hacemos es una instalación artística o una sala de juegos”. Caigo en cuenta, se han construido su propio cubo blanco.
