A dramatic event was at the core of the Eleusinian Mysteries, an abduction or else death of the sacred Kore (daughter), and a reunion with her mother that signified the return of blooming on earth, the return to joy after an anxiety crisis and mourning. The Eleusinian Musteries are an advanced example of the ritualistic incarnation of a myth; we do find similar examples in many other world traditions, but the difference is that in Eleusis the emotional charge offered by the initiation became conscious to a great degree. If Persephone symbolises the unknown, the chaotic material of the unconscious mind, then Demeter must be an earthly hyperconsciousness, ready after the grief of her loss, to absorb her journey to other dimensions, the "otherworld", so in that sense Persephone's return could be the enrichment of our consciousness. Are Demeter and Persephone two distinct faces or two sides of the same coin? As we see in the symbolism of the Triple Goddess archetype, Persephone stands for the young girl, Demeter for the woman in her full bloom and sensibility, while Hecate, their consort appears too, as the Crone, the wise old woman. Depending on the researcher these names and positions vary, the base remains the same though, being the relationship of a woman with herself throughout her life, also with femininity in general, other women too. The psychoanalytical element seems unavoidable, the Mysteries seeming ancient become contemporary as we start to wonder about female relationships and social representations.

(Art: 'Fisherman by the Laïta', 1890 by Paul Sérusier)
* * * *
Feelings like disappointment, embarrassment, irritation, resentment, anger, jealousy, and fear, instead of being bad news, are actually very clear moments that teach us where it is that we’re holding back. They teach us to perk up and lean in when we feel we’d rather collapse and back away. They’re like messengers that show us, with terrifying clarity, exactly where we’re stuck. This very moment is the perfect teacher, and, lucky for us, it’s with us wherever we are.
