There’s a stereotype that Jews are open about mental health and we all have a therapist -- but frankly, that’s not true. There are people of all ages in our communities who need more help than they’re getting.

Everyone has seen a tree. Their branches and bark are familiar to us. We know what to expect when we look at them, touch them and smell them. Maybe that’s why visiting the towering giants at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks in California is so overwhelming. The sequoias are trees, but somehow more than trees. You can expect them to be tall, but seeing them for the first time is a jarring experience. How can something so familiar feel so astounding? It’s just something you have to experience for yourself. Photographer Antonina Pattiz remembers her visit well, “The scene felt like pure magic because we were the only ones on the trail. In the quiet chill of the January air, we felt like we had the world at our feet.” Photo courtesy of Antonina Pattiz .

A Reevaluation of Jimmy Carter's Presidency
A new documentary film called Carterland and Jonathan Alter's biography His Very Best: Jimmy Carter, a Life (ebook) are among the recent media attempting to reconsider and recontextualize the presidency of Jimmy Carter. From Megan Mayhew Bergman in The Guardian:
"Here's what people get wrong about Carter," Will Pattiz, one of the film's directors tells me. "He was not in over his head or ineffective, weak or indecisive -- he was a visionary leader, decades ahead of his time trying to pull the country toward renewable energy, climate solutions, social justice for women and minorities, equitable treatment for all nations of the world. He faced nearly impossible economic problems -- and at the end of the day came so very close to changing the trajectory of this nation."
Will's brother, Jim, agrees. "A question folks should be asking themselves is: what catastrophes would have befallen this country had anyone other than Jimmy Carter been at the helm during that critical time in the late 1970s?"
I'm gonna need a three-episode series about Carter on You're Wrong About, stat. If there's any justice in the world (wait, don't answer that), in 50 years' time Ronald Reagan's presidency will be considered the disaster that is was and Carter's will look better in comparison.
If you're interested in seeing Carterland, it looks as though it's not out widely quite yet -- the only place I could even find a trailer is on this Atlanta Film Festival page (click "Play Trailer" at the bottom of the page).

The Best National Parks To Visit In The Fall
The Best National Parks To Visit In The Fall
As the end of summer draws near, you might be anticipating more cozy time at home. But don’t forget that autumn is one of the best seasons for outdoor exploration in the United States. Fortunately, there are natural wonders in our own backyards. “Fall is my favorite time of year to visit the national parks,” Jim Pattiz, co-founder of the organization More Than Just Parks, told HuffPost. “The…

Portland Protest Photos 2020
As you may have noticed Portland has been in the news quite a bit lately with most of the coverage focusing on the activities surrounding what have been called both peaceful protests by some and violent riots by others.
Many of us have seen some of the Portland protests photos many of which have raised eyebrows to say the least.
As a resident of Portland, I have been contacted by a number of concerned friends and family members wondering if I am “OK” and their consideration has been heartwarming. Yes, I am “OK”.
As someone who captures images and shares stories for a living I felt compelled to capture some of what is going on in my city to share with anyone wondering what is going on in Portland.
After going to numerous of these gatherings I’ve been awed by the images, actions, and stories I’ve experienced firsthand. This is my account of the goings-on here as a Portlander.
