Reno Omokri shakes the table and bursts a bubble again as he schools an Obidient on Nigerian history
Earlier today, a post was shared on Ooduarere where Reno Omkori replied to an Obedient on twitter/X. He has done it again. This time around he schooled an obedient that was trying to play the victim on Aburi Accord. The Twitter user by the ID @Benjami03827700 shared the screenshot below. See what he wrote below.
@renoomokri: Dear Obi, Thank you for your feedback. On Aburi, you may want to consider the following facts. When Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi abrogated regionalism and promulgated Decree Number 34 on May 24, 1966, which effectively ended regionalism, took control of all resources, including oil (all resources, including oil used to belong to the regions before Ironsi's decree), which had hitherto belonged to the regions, and domiciled them in his military government. Other members of the Supreme Military Council alleged that Ironsi did not consult them before promulgating the decree. It is not known if their allegation is true. However, Ironsi's Attorney General, Chief Gabriel Chike Michael Onyiuke, later said Ironsi did not need to consult them. Also, perhaps naively, ALL of Ironsi's advisers were Igbo, like him. They included Chief Francis Nwokedi, Dr. Pius Okigbo, and Colonel Patrick Anwunah. Calls for him to appoint at least one token non-Igbo fell on deaf ears. That decree ignited the counter-coup of July 29, 1966, in which Ironsi was killed and replaced with Lt. Colonel Yakubu Gowon, who did not participate in the coup but was a compromise candidate since he was a Northerner, to appease the North and a Christian, to placate the South. All Military Governors accepted him except Ojukwu. Eventually, the then Ghanaian military leader, General Ankrah, invited Gowon and Ojukwu for a peace meeting in Aburi, Ghana, between January 4-5, 1967. Agreements were reached, including that Gowon would broadcast first, AFTER CONSULTATIONS, followed by Ojukwu. However, upon return, Ojukwu made his broadcast first, which shocked other regions and jeopardised Gowon, who was almost removed by those who made him Head of State. Please note that Gowon had no control of the troops. He was, at that time, just a titular Head of State. The real power was domiciled with Colonel Murtala Muhammed until Murtala was militarily humiliated by the Biafrans at Abagana on March 31, 1968, after which Gowon relieved him of his command, and Colonel Obasanjo later became the darling of Gowon due to his military effectiveness against Biafra. You must understand that at that time, Ojukwu had full dictatorial powers in Biafra, but Gowon was hanging on a rope in Lagos. As a result of Ojukwu's broadcast, Gowon issued Decree Number 8, and later, on May 27, 1967, broke Nigeria into 12 states. That decree would NEVER have been passed were it not for Ojukwu's broadcast. Ojukwu rejected both actions and declared the Republic of Biafra on May 30, 1967, which ignited a police action by Gowon's government on July 6, 1967. Things degenerated into war, which did not end until Biafra's defeat on January 15, 1970, after Ojukwu fled on January 11, 1970. The war may have been prevented if Ojukwu broke away with only the East Central state, which was homogeneously Igbo. However, he insisted on the whole of Eastern Nigeria, which included non-Igbos in Calabar and Rivers, whose leaders, like Isaac Boro and Ken Asari-Wiwa, rejected Biafra. Even within Biafra, prominent Igbos, like Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, did not support Ojukwu's actions. They felt that a diplomatic solution could be reached. But after Colonel Ojukwu began executing his friends, like Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna, Colonel Victor Banjo, Philip Alale, and Sam Agbam, amongst others, for treason, they all kept quiet and began plotting to escape Biafra. This is why Nnamdi Azikiwe escaped from Biafra and turned up in Lagos in 1969, sitting beside General Gowon, declaring support for the Federal Military Government and condemning Colonel Ojukwu, whom he blamed for the deaths of millions of Biafrans. If Colonel Ojukwu had only waited for Gowon to broadcast after Aburi, there would likely have been no war. Thanks again, and may God bless you. #TableShaker

The door, to his amusement, was unlocked. Was that meant for him, or was Reno as careless as he was strange? Patrick sauntered inside, pushing the door shut with his foot. He heard it click back into place but he didn’t look over his shoulder to check as he walked further in the apartment, ghosting the same ambling trail he’d made a few nights previous. This time, Patrick came more sober and more cautious, not letting the eager curiosity show anywhere on his face or in his body language. Reno had invited him today without much explanation as to why, but based on their hushed exchange the morning after he awoke in the other man's bed, Patrick could guess. “Hello, dear,” he sing-songed into the air before tossing himself onto the couch. Reno was out of sight but surely within earshot. “Got another magic trick to show me?”

Meet the cast of The Right Stuff on Disney Plus: Actors and the real Mercury Seven comparison
Revisit the space race in this new series from Disney and National Geographic.
The story of the Mercury Seven is about to be retold for a new generation on Disney Plus, with an all-new cast in tow to play the aspiring astronauts.
Set in the 1950s, The Right Stuff depicts the desperate attempt by the US to beat Russia into space, starting as NASA selects seven elite candidates from the armed forces to be considered as potential astronauts.
Disney Plus has assembled a large ensemble cast for this latest adaptation, led by Suits star Patrick J Adams as media savvy marine John Glenn, and Jake McDorman as his rival Alan Shepard.
Who will be the first to make it into space? You’ll have to tune in to find out, but in the meantime, get to know the cast of The Right Stuff with our guide to the key players.
Jake McDorman plays Alan Shepard
Who is Alan Shepard? Shepard is an accomplished test pilot who is selected to be part of the Mercury Seven programme. He’s a charming ladies man but dislikes people prying into his personal life, nor does he know how to handle himself with the media. His main rival is John Glenn, with the two of them depicted as frontrunners for the coveted astronaut job.
What else has Jake McDorman been in? McDorman is probably best known for his lead role in Limitless, the short-lived television series based on the Bradley Cooper film of the same name. He also played Mike Pratt in the long-running US remake of Shameless, Jeff in vampire comedy What We Do in The Shadows, and Captain Metropolis in HBO’s Watchmen series.
Who played Alan Shepard in The Right Stuff (1983)? Shepard was portrayed by Scott Glenn in The Right Stuff film adaptation, who recently appeared in Marvel’s Daredevil and The Defenders as blind ninja Stick.
Patrick J Adams plays John Glenn
Who is John Glenn? Glenn is selected from the Marine Corp to be a part of the Mercury Seven and quickly rises to the challenge. He is very determined to be the first American in space, as he feels it will guarantee his legacy for generations to come. Glenn is also very polished and media savvy, gathering attention from the press with ease.
What else has Patrick J Adams been in? Adams is best known for the role of lawyer Mike Ross in the hit legal drama Suits, which he played across the first seven seasons. He has since appeared in Orphan Black, Legends of Tomorrow and Amazon Prime Video’s Sneaky Pete.
Who played John Glenn in The Right Stuff (1983)? Acclaimed actor Ed Harris played John Glenn in the original film, who currently stars in HBO’s Westworld.
Colin O’Donoghue plays Gordon Cooper
Who is Gordon Cooper? Cooper is a test pilot in the United States Air Force and the youngest of the recruits to the Mercury Seven. He’s skilled at his work but has a troubled home life which could wreck his chances at being selected.
What else has Colin O’Donoghue been in? O’Donoghue is probably best known as Captain Hook in the ABC fairytale series Once Upon a Time.
Who played Gordon Cooper in The Right Stuff (1983)? Dennis Quaid played Gordon ‘Gordo’ Cooper in The Right Stuff.
Aaron Staton plays Wally Schirra
Who is Wally Schirra? Schirra is a test pilot with a naval background who joins The Mercury Seven.
What else has Aaron Staton been in? Staton had a starring role as Ken Cosgrove in the acclaimed period drama Mad Men. Video game fans may also remember him as Cole Phelps in the 2011 detective game L.A Noire, which was recently re-released on next gen consoles.
Who played Wally Schirra in The Right Stuff (1983)? Lance Henriksen played Wally Schirra in the 1983 film, known for his sci-fi roles in Aliens, The Terminator and X-Files spin-off Millennium.
James Lafferty plays Scott Carpenter
Who is Scott Carpenter? Carpenter is another test pilot with a naval background selected to be a member of The Mercury Seven.
What else has James Lafferty been in? Lafferty is best known for his role as Nathan Scott in the teen drama One Tree Hill, which he played for a period of nine years. He has since appeared in the Netflix horror series The Haunting of Hill House.

Micah Stock plays Deke Slayton
Who is Deke Slayton? Deke is a test pilot hailing from the US Air Force who makes it through the rigorous testing to become a member of the Mercury Seven.
What else has Micah Stock been in? Stock recently appeared in the Amazon Prime Video original movie Brittany Runs a Marathon, and earned a Tony Award nomination for his performance in It’s Only A Play on Broadway.
Who played Deke Slayton in The Right Stuff (1983)? Scott Paulin played the Air Force veteran in the 1983 film, who also had roles in Teen Wolf and Turner & Hooch.
Michael Trotter plays Gus Grissom
Who is Gus Grissom? Grissom is a US Air Force pilot and member of the Mercury Seven, who enjoys hunting in his spare time. He keeps out of the limelight in comparison to the likes of fellow trainee astronaut John Glenn.
What else has Michael Trotter been in? Trotter’s previous roles include Reno in Marvel’s Inhumans and Elden Donahue in the American drama series Underground.
Who played Gus Grissom in The Right Stuff (1983)? He was first portrayed by Fred Ward in the 1983 original.

Airworthy P-51 Mustangs, 2019, Part 3
Part 1 Part 2
While they have been heavily modified at times, and the airframe’s original serial numbers are lost to time, Cavalier Mustangs are still Mustangs to me. They have probably seen more combat time than most surviving P-51Ds as well.
P-51D, 44-73877, Shaun Patrick
Green-and-gray RAF paint scheme, RAF roundels and fin flash, red propeller spinner, sharkmouth nose art, GA-S fuselage code. The aircraft served with the RCAF until 1958 when it entered civilian hands and flew on the air racing circuit. It underwent a full restoration in the early 1980s and flew under the livery of Old Crow until 2014, with a short stint as Cisco for filming Memphis Belle and as Detroit Miss 1999-2001.
P-51D, Contrary Mary, 44-84847, Anglia Aircraft Restorations Ltd
Overall silver finish, black-and-white checkered nose and rudder, yellow band on canopy rim, Contrary Mary nose art on port side, WZ-I fuselage code. The aircraft first appeared in North Dakota in 1999 after an uncertain civilian history and was sold to Duxford’s Fighter Collection in 2005 for restoration in Chino. Restoration was complete by 2007 and it operated out of Duxford until a crash in 2017. It recently flew again after a restoration at Fighter Rebuilders in the US.
Cavalier Mustang II, Bum Steer, 67-14866, Tom Friedkin
Overall silver finish, black-and-white checkered nose and wingtips, black rudder, DF-X fuselage code, taller vertical stabilizer. The aircraft was assembled by Cavalier in 1967 and served with the Bolivian Air Force from 1968 until 1977. It returned to North America and was bought by the current owner in 1991; in 2000 it crashed and was restored by Fighter Rebuilders to airworthiness once more.
Cavalier Mustang II, Mormon Mustang, 67-22579, John Bagley
Overall silver finish, red-and-yellow checkered nose, yellow rudder, C5-T fuselage code. The aircraft was rebuilt as an F-51D for Bolivia, where it served from 1967 until 1977. The current owner purchased the aircraft in 2006 and almost immediately afterwards crash-landed on a highway, requiring an almost complete rebuilt; it returned to airworthiness in 2009.
Cavalier Mustang II, Six Shooter, 67-22580, Chuck Hall
Overall silver finish, blue upper surfaces and rudder, yellow propeller spinner, D-Day invasion stripes under wings and fuselage, RF-K fuselage code, Six Shooter nose art on port side. The aircraft served with the Bolivian Air Force from 1968 until 1977 when it was recovered and returned to Canada for restoration. It entered the US in 1986 and was acquired by the current owner in 1996.
Cavalier Mustang II, Lou IV, 67-22581, William Glover
Overall olive-drab finish, yellow nose, D-Day invasion stripes on wings and under fuselage, E2-C fuselage code, Race 16 markings painted over national insignia on the fuselage.
P-51A, 43-6006, John Dowd
Polished aluminum finish, olive-drab upper nose, red-and-white stripped rudder, Race 6 marking on vertical tail, otherwise unmarked. The aircraft served with the Air Corps until 1944 when it crashed in Arkansas, and only returned to airworthiness in 1985 after an eight year restoration. It flew at Reno from 2005-2012 when it was sold to the current owner and restored to P-51A configuration.
P-51A, 43-6251, Miss Virginia, Planes of Fame Air Museum
Overall olive-drab finish, yellow propeller spinner, white stripes on rear fuselage, white band across vertical tail. The aircraft was acquired by Ed Maloney in 1953 and stayed with his museum (and the Planes of Fame branch in California) until 2001 when it moved to the Arizona branch. It underwent restoration to airworthiness in 1981 and most recently in 2006.
P-51B, Impatient Virgin?, 42-106638, John Sessions
Overall silver finish, yellow propeller spinner, large D-Day invasion stripes on rear fuselage and under wings, Malcolm hood, Impatient Virgin nose art on port side, E9-R fuselage code. The aircraft served with the 361st Fighter Group until a crash in 1945, at which point the wreckage was abandoned until recovery in 2003. Restoration finished by 2008.
(The aircraft in flight, likely 1944)
P-51B, Old Crow, 43-12252, Jack Roush
Overall dark green finish, yellow-and-red propeller spinner, white bands around inner wings and horizontal stabilizers, Malcolm hood, B6-S fuselage code, Old Crow nose art on both sides. The aircraft served with the Air Corps until 1944 when it crashed in Lake Louise, FL, during a training flight. The wreckage was recovered in 2001 and restoration finished by 2008 in time for Oshkosh.
P-51B, Berlin Express, 43-24837, Comanche Fighters
Overall olive-drab finish, yellow-and-red propeller spinner, D-Day invasion stripes under fuselage and wings, B6-0 fuselage code, Berlin Express nose art on port side, dragon nose art on right side. The aircraft served with the 363rd Fighter Group until written off in a 10 June 1944 crash; restoration began in 2010 and was finished by 2014. It flew across the Atlantic for the Duxford Flying Legends airshow in 2017 and remained there until 2018 due to a broken canopy.
P-51C, Tuskegee Airmen, 42-103645, Commemorative Air Force Red Tails Squadron
Overall silver finish, red vertical and horizontal stabilizers, red propeller spinner, yellow bands around outer wings, A2-4 fuselage code, CAF art under cockpit. The aircraft was acquired by the CAF in 1965 from a trade school and languished until 1999 when restoration began in earnest. It first flew again in 2001 and suffered a fatal crash in 2004, and a gear-up landing in 2016.
P-51C, Ina the Macon Bell, 42-103831, Kermit Weeks
Overall silver finish, red vertical and horizontal stabilizers, yellow bands around outer wings, 22 fuselage code. The aircraft flew as a racer for many years postwar before being acquired by Kermit Weeks in 1985; restoration finished in 2000 after almost fifteen years.
P-51C, Lope’s Hope 3rd, 43-24907, Dakota Territory Air Museum
Overall silver finish, black horizontal and vertical stabilizers, large national insignia on rear fuselage, otherwise unmarked. Restoration began sometime in 2004, with a first flight in 2014. There is little information available on the plane at the current time.
P-51C, Boise Bee, 43-25057, Warhawk Air Museum
Overall olive-drab finish, red propeller spinner, white bands around inner wings, rudder, and horizontal stabilizers, QP-B fuselage code, Boise Bee nose art on port side, white 19 under port cockpit. Restoration originally began in 1985, slowly continuing until its first flight in 2010.
Three down, eight to go

youtube
Bardzo podobał się remiks hitu Whitney Houston. Skutkiem tego znalazł się na #2.
youtube
W Top 10 mamy cztery polskie produkcje i dwie pochodzące z polskiego hip hopu. Oprócz „Disneya” jest to ten utwór, który zalicza #3.

dreamland | patrick & reno
summary: a restless night with too much remembering. whiskey, cigarettes, and sleeping pills help to smooth it over.
It happened again. Patrick woke with a sudden jolt from yet another nightmare, his heart slamming in his chest like this was still the first time it had ever happened. Though he awoke in a shroud of fear, the feeling quickly dissolved as he got his bearings back. Patrick was in Reno’s bed (and this was the third time a bad dream had slammed him awake, how embarrassing). He was fine, totally out of danger. “Fuck me,” he grumbled, tossing his head back on the pillow. At this point, a monster waiting at the foot of the bed was preferable. He could tell without checking that Reno was awake, too. If he wasn’t so mortified, he might have even felt bad about that, instead of resenting him for it. “What the fuck is wrong with me?” he asked the darkness as he pushed his hands to his eyes.
Although he still jolted up every time Patrick startled awake, Reno managed to keep himself from leaping off the mattress after the first few times. He sat up, instead, and turned to watch Patrick. His eyes glinted, reflecting light like a cat's as they adjusted quickly to see through the darkness. Waking up with his heart pounding was starting to get annoying, especially when he was more sober every time he opened his eyes. "Get up and do a lap." Reno stretched his arms behind his back with an audible crack from his shoulders, accepting now that he was going to be awake for the rest of the night. "Clear your head."
He didn’t want to get up and do a lap. Patrick wanted to go the fuck to sleep, and tell Reno to stop telling him what to do. But he knew that sleep was only going to result in another spiral out of control until he woke up terrified once again. And telling Reno off took energy he didn’t have right now. So, begrudgingly, Patrick rolled off of the mattress and got out of bed. He avoided eye contact and dragged his hand down his face. “Ugh. Fuck. This shouldn’t be possible— Can we just go downstairs? I know you’re not going back to sleep.”
Reno stared down Patrick until he finished speaking, at which point he climbed to his feet. "Yeah." His eyes darted to the side, into his rafters where his main altar was, but he turned away from it, pulled the blanket off his mattress, and headed down the stairs without another word. Yawning as he reached the bottom step, he cast a tired glance over to the lamp beside the couch and the bulb flickered to life. Even with the blanket around his shoulders a chill cut through the air. He headed over to the stove and laid a hand on the outside of the kettle to start the water boiling.
A surge of annoyance rolled over Patrick as Reno turned and walked away. What did he have to be upset about? Feeling defensive and put-off, Patrick waited several seconds before following. He only went as far as the couch, not accompanying Reno into the kitchen. Though, he did end up taking the advice and walking around in a wide circle. It helped him calm down just enough to stop his emotional state from tipping into outright anger. Sighing, more annoyed with himself now than anything else, he curled up on the couch and waited for Reno to join him there.
The water was boiling within half a minute and Reno took his time pouring the hot water into a mug. He turned and looked Patrick over for a second, gauging his mood, before walking forward to take a seat on the floor beside Patrick's legs. He raised the cup of hot water until he could feel the steam on his chin and pulled the blanket closed around himself. Unblinking, he watched Patrick over the rim of the mug, gaze weary but uncharacteristically clear.
Patrick could almost feel the stare, and shifted uncomfortably underneath it. He searched for something to say that wasn’t him complaining about his powers abandoning him, but nothing else came to mind. Eventually, he risked returning Reno’s prolonged gaze. The glow-in-the-dark eyes still sent shivers down Patrick’s back, but he leaned over anyway. “This is fucking annoying, huh?” He pressed his palm to Reno’s forehead, for no particular reason. “Or do you find it funny? Keeps you guessing, at least.”
Reno closed his eyes when Patrick touched his forehead and tipped forward, resting some weight against Patrick's hand for a couple seconds before folding his arms on the couch beside him. "Ha ha," he said plainly, lifting his head to look at Patrick again. "So what's up, you can't control your nightmares?"
The fake laugh made Patrick frown, and the question made him scowl. He sat back on the couch with a loud groan. “Guess not,” he grumbled. “I don’t know what’s happening. It’s like everything just shut off. I try to change anything and I get stuck in—“ he waved his hand— “it doesn’t matter. But I can’t make anything happen differently.”
Reno's head tilted to the side as he listened, expression unchanging. "In your own dreams, or other people's too?"
After a long pause, Patrick finally answered. “Both.” He suddenly felt cold, too, and crossed his arms over his chest. “I don’t even think I can dream walk right now. It fucking sucks.”
“Yikes.” Reno pressed his cheek into his shoulder, watching Patrick through his eyelashes. “What changed?”
Patrick could feel himself getting angry again. “If I knew,” he said slowly, “I’d fix it. And we wouldn’t be sitting here at three in the morning.”
Reno’s eyes narrowed as he now picked up on Patrick’s tone. He leaned back slowly, taking a sip of his hot water before putting it down on the ground. He pushed himself up to sit on the couch beside Patrick, huddled under his blanket. His attention drifted over to the liquor cabinet behind the couch. “You want me to keep you company or no?”
Patrick didn't look any more or less annoyed as Reno joined him on the couch, but he did uncross his arms and pinch the edge of the blanket. "Sure," he replied quietly, trying to sound like he didn't care either way. He followed Reno's gaze to the liquor. "Whiskey?"
“Hm.” Reno unwrapped one edge of the blanket and held it out, but changed his mind quickly and stood up instead, tossing the whole blanket at Patrick. The air was cold on his bare skin, but it helped clear his head. “You want?” He wandered to the balcony doors and peered out to the night sky. “It’s raining.”
Patrick just barely caught the blanket, and even then part of it settled over his face. He sighed into the fabric then pulled it down over his chest. "If you're having, yeah." But instead of finding a bottle, Reno wandered closer to the outdoors. Patrick didn't like this, for a reason he couldn't quite understand, and he dumped the blanket aside as he moved to join him by the balcony. "How exciting," he mumbled, wrapping his arms around Reno's shoulders from behind.
It was too cloudy to see the stars. Reno watched a drop of rain run down the glass, then leaned back against Patrick’s chest, shoulders tense. A sense of déjà vu hung over him, mocking him, and when he pressed his palm to the scar over his collarbone, faint tremors spread through his fingers. He curled his hand into a fist and pressed it to the glass. “Want a smoke?”
The strange, quiet tension rolling off of Reno was not new— he sometimes just got like this and Patrick usually let it happen without comment. However, the trembling was odd enough for Patrick to be curious. He watched Reno's fingers wobbling closed, and then knuckles thudding lightly against the window, and frowned. "Sounds good. My cigarettes are upstairs."
“I have some down here.” Reno moved to go fetch them but when he turned, Patrick was right in front of him and his mind stuttered over what he had been going to do. He exhaled through his nose and tilted his head down to rest his forehead against Patrick’s chest. His shoulders sagged. “Still want that whiskey?”
"What's happening?" Patrick asked as he worried, for just a moment, that maybe he was still dreaming. He held Reno's arms just above the elbow, partially to ground himself, but didn't hold on too tight in case it made Reno skittish. "You sound like you're short circuiting."
The grip on his arms helped bring Reno fully back to the current moment. He looked up at Patrick, scanning his face for a few silent seconds, gaze intent- he didn’t know what he was searching for, but whatever it was, he couldn’t find it. He looked away, but didn’t move further from him. “Just gotta reboot,” he responded with a twist to his mouth. “It’s been a weird fucking couple weeks.”
Patrick considered him for a moment, then crouched slightly to move his arms around Reno's waist. He stood again, holding Reno close, lifting him off the floor. A long exhale spilled from his chest as walked them both back to the couch. "Weird fucking couple weeks," he repeated quietly. He put Reno down and then handed him the blanket, tossing it over his exposed chest before he turned back toward the liquor cabinet. "Where are the cigarettes?" Patrick asked as he grabbed the first bottle of whiskey he saw.
Reno draped his arms over Patrick’s shoulders and rested his chin on his shoulder as he was carried over. The room was starting to shift from uncomfortably clear to spinning around him and once Patrick put him down he hunched over, pressing the heels of his hands against his closed eyes. “Tin on top of the cabinet,” he mumbled.
Only after he pulled down the tin and found a lighter did Patrick notice the alarming state that the cabinet was in. It was a mess, like it'd been taken apart and haphazardly put together again. All he could do was make the mental note and move on for now, though. He returned to Reno nudged him lightly with the end of the bottle. "Are you tripping?" he asked casually. "I have no fucking clue when you could have taken something, but it kinda feels like you are." He sat down beside Reno and stuck a cigarette into his mouth.
Reno took the bottle but didn’t open it yet, settling closer to Patrick on the couch. His eyes caught on Patrick’s hands, then his mouth, then the cigarette. He lifted a hand and touched the end- not even a full second later, a small flame started at the tip. “I’m sober.” He struggled with the cap of the whiskey, hands clammy, but managed to pop it off after a few tries. “For now.”
Just as he was about to light the cigarette himself, Reno's hand was in front of him and smoke started to rise into the air. Patrick blinked, surprised and confused about why he was surprised. It was only now that he finally felt just how tired he was. But his attention snapped over to Reno once he spoke. "Damn," he breathed out. He knew Reno got weird on the way down, but he'd never seen this. "Stone sober?" Patrick pulled on the cigarette then held it out.
“Something like that.” Reno took the cigarette and pressed it to his mouth, pulling the blanket up with his free hand and settling down. He leaned his head against Patrick’s shoulder and pressed the bottle of whiskey to Patrick’s chest. “What are you dreaming about?”
"Doesn't matter." Patrick took the bottle but didn't drink. He wished he'd lit his own cigarette so they wouldn't have to share. "It's some dumb shit from when I was a kid. Sounds fucking lame out loud." He moved his arm so it was draped over Reno's shoulder, allowing them to get closer, and hooked his ankle under the other's. "Why has it been weird? I know you haven't been this sober the whole time."
Reno held the cigarette to Patrick’s lips and took the bottle from him, putting it down on the ground beside the couch since neither of them had taken a sip. He turned, moving his legs over Patrick’s lap, and settled under his arm again. “Fuck, imagine. The combined withdrawal would take me out.” His laugh came out raspy. He dug his fingertips into the scar tissue on his collarbone. “You ever rip a wound open right before it heals?”
Patrick pulled on the cigarette as soon it landed on his lips, feeling simultaneously more relaxed and stressed out. Once Reno was settled again, Patrick picked up a new cigarette and handed that off to him, humming and smiling a bit at the attempted joke. He considered the question seriously. Frowning, head rolled back so he could stare at the ceiling, his finger making lazy, wavy lines along Reno's arm. "Yeah, I have."
Reno lit the new cigarette with the same ease as the other. Energy buzzed under his skin, but his head felt heavy with fatigue. He tucked his head under Patrick's chin when he leaned back. "Yeah." He blew a ring of smoke towards an unlit candle on the low table in front of the couch and watched the wick through the middle– a small flame flickered into being, then quickly extinguished into more smoke. "It's like that. Why's it been weird for you?"
The air above Patrick's head was hazy and getting hazier as he blew more smoke into the gathering cloud. "I don't know," he answered, closing his eyes and smiling a little. He pulled on his cigarette again. "Yeah. I don't know. I live here."
Reno turned his head and pressed his lips to Patrick's neck before his next drag. The corners of his mouth twitched upwards. "You live here?"
"Yeah," Patrick mumbled. Already, his cigarette was out, and he glanced to it with resentment. "New Athens." A strange weight pressed down on his chest, not caused by Reno. He ignored it. "Every time I'm here I deal with a special kind of bullshit."
"Huh." Reno leaned back to watch Patrick's face. He held out his own cigarette in offering. "Why'd you come back?"
He plucked the cigarette from Reno's fingers. "Because my asshole brothers fucking ditched me in the middle of a war." Patrick took a drag. "And I decided that they shouldn't be the only ones who get the nice city for it."
Reno reached out to press his fingers into Patrick's chest. "If you don't like it here I could help them have a worse time. Araminta's already got me giving Chase hay-fever."
Patrick considered the offer for a moment, wondering what Reno could do, but that thought fell away almost instantly. He lifted his head, his face a contortion of confusion and anger. "What?" He stared at Reno. "What the fuck? Why?"
Reno startled from his comfortable position, not expecting Patrick to move. He sat back up straight and watched Patrick’s expressions changed, confused about what caused this. “She asked me to?”
"Why?" he asked again, indignant. "For what reason?" His hand curled into a fist against Reno's arm. Nevermind that he was just considering the same thing, the fact that someone was actively targeting his brother was unacceptable to him.
Reno pulled his arm away from Patrick’s hand, reaching over for the bottle on the ground. “I didn’t ask. She wanted revenge for something and I’m trying to stop killing people.”
Patrick gave a incredulous scoff and puffed on the cigarette with a renewed energy. "Don't joke about that, Reno. That's my fucking brother. I'm allowed to fuck with him, but not you, and not fucking Minta, of all people. Fuck."
Reno slowly tipped his head back, lying back against the arm of the couch and staring up into the rafters. “I’m making him sneeze. It wears off after a month.”
There was a long stretch of silence after that. Patrick killed his cigarette and, because he was still angry, dropped the end on the floor. He took the bottle from Reno's grasp and gulped down as much whiskey as he could handle, wincing through every swallow. "That's it?" he asked once he was done, placing the bottle on Reno's stomach and waiting for him to take it back.
Reno took the bottle, cradling it between his hands before he finally took a swig. His throat burned, but he closed his eyes and waited for the nausea to fade. “Yeah.”
More quiet, then Patrick ran a hand down his face. "Fine," he grumbled. The temptation to get up and storm out of the apartment was strong, but he just turned his head away from Reno and steamed for a while longer. "Don't do anything else to Chase. Let's see how much Jesse is pissing me off when he gets back before I decide."
Reno laughed, once, and rolled his head back down to watch Patrick. The confidence with which Patrick was giving orders didn’t settle quite right with him.“I wasn’t planning anything else unless she told me to.”
Patrick angled his head back around with a sneer. He shoved Reno's legs off his lap and turned to face him for fully. "No. I don't care if she tells you to. Don't do. Anything else. To Chase."
Reno’s jaw tightened and he met Patrick’s eyes. He was still too sober for this, skin oversensitive and head heavy. “You’re missing something here,” he said slowly, voice low. “I don’t have to do what you tell me to.”
Rage buzzed all over Patrick's skin. Before he fully realized that he had moved, he was hunched over Reno, holding the whiskey out of the way so he could get closer. As his grip tightened around the neck of the bottle, the fingers of his opposite hand dug into Reno's wrist. "About this, you do," Patrick growled, baring his teeth.
Patrick’s motions happened as though in slow motion. Reno watched the ripples sent through the air as he moved- they stopped when, suddenly, Patrick was on top of him with his hand pressing down on his wrist. He blinked a few times, eyes focusing and unfocusing before they settled on Patrick’s face. The remaining tension and indignation bled out of him as a wave of fatigue took hold. He wheezed another laugh without changing expression. What was the point in arguing? He would agree with Patrick now, and then Araminta would threaten him into doing what she wanted, and then this whole circle would start up again and bring him along for the ride. “Okay.”
The laugh nearly made Patrick see red: not even the relent calmed him down, mostly because he didn't quite believe it anyway. For a moment, he pressed down even more, squeezing Reno's wrist tighter and tighter. After a slow count to ten, he finally let go. Patrick kept the bottle, though, and drank more as he settled back into his previous position on the couch. Now that the moment had passed it was like all the emotion was pouring out of him. With a tired sigh, he reached for yet another cigarette.
Reno rubbed his wrist with one hand one Patrick let him go, shaking his hand out to get rid of the pins and needles as blood slowly returning to his fingertips. Curling up at the end of the couch, he pulled the blanket around his shoulders and tucked his hands under his arms to start warming them back up. The moment of adrenaline faded quickly, leaving him lightheaded. "Feel better?"
If he was being honest, Patrick felt worse. But all he offered to Reno was a small, noncommittal shrug as he scowled into the darkness. He winced down some more whiskey, then leaned over to put the bottle on the floor, in reach of them both. Good thing he found the lighter, after all, because it felt almost ridiculous to expect Reno to light another cigarette for him right now. He clicked the flame on then sat back again, resuming smoking as if the outburst had never happened.
The silence stretched on until Reno stood up, dragging his hands over his face. He didn’t know why he was still sober, why he had bothered staying that way until now. The whiskey bottle was at his feet so he picked it up by the neck and headed out to the balcony, not bothering to close the doors behind him in case Patrick wanted to follow. The sky was still black, and the rain still coming down in sheets, but it woke him up to feel the wind and cold water on his skin. He dug his nails into the back of one of his forearms and hung his head, sending a prayer to his mother.
The alcohol finally started to go to his head; Patrick welcomed the buzz with almost relief. After what felt to him like several minutes of sitting alone on the couch, and once his latest cigarette was burned out, he reluctantly got up. Hovering in the doorway of the balcony, Patrick watched rainwater roll down Reno's back. A split second decision made him yank his shirt over his head and leave it in the dry air of the apartment. The rain was bitterly cold, but he leaned on the railing next to Reno. "You want me out here?"
The approaching footsteps were faint underneath the storm but Reno listened closely, tracking where Patrick was moving without lifting his head. He was soaked through at this point, a steady stream of water pouring from where the length of his hair had stuck together. Patrick was next to him, now, part of Reno kept note, but his eyes remained fixed on where the water dripping off his head disappeared to the street below. His throat was dry when he went to speak. Tilting his head back, he pushed the bedraggled strands off his face and smirked up at the clouds. "Only if you're gonna shove me over the edge."
Patrick was already starting to regret going out into the rain. The cold seeped under his skin and he started to shiver. "Hm," he responded in a low tone. "You're shit out of luck, then." Another chill slid over his chest but he stubbornly stayed put.
Reno laughed at that, rolling his head to the side to look at Patrick through the hair that flopped back over his face. He turned after a second, still leaning against the railing, and took his time sizing Patrick up, head to toe. "Come out to stop me drowning the whiskey?"
"There's still whiskey?" Patrick asked, incredulous, but with a smile tugging at his lips. "I thought you were coming out here to finish that off. Should have known you were the type to just sit out in a storm."
Reno held the bottle out for Patrick to take, a good few inches of liquor still left in the bottle. "Best kinda weather. Disruptive."
Patrick took the bottle and swallowed the rest of the liquor down as fast as he could. When he was done, his head was swimming. "Tasted like rainwater," he mumbled, words a little slurred as he placed the bottle at their feet. More out of habit than anything else, Patrick slid his hand over Reno's arm. A part of him wondered if it was too soon since his angry outburst, but that was drowned out by the alcohol clouding his brain.
At the first touch, Reno was ready for Patrick's hand to pass right through him– he was startled back to reality when they made contact. With an odd curiosity, Reno watched the movement, feeling as though he was settling back into his own body from wherever his mind had been before. He shivered, the cold catching up to him. "Want to go inside?"
He'd been about to ask, so Patrick nodded. He noticed that Reno still seemed spacey and all over the place (more than usual, at least) but it felt odd to ask more about it now. Something akin to regret needled at Patrick, but he ignored it. Once he was back inside, he picked up his shirt. But instead of yanking it over his head, he silently offered it to Reno. Whether this was his weird version of an apology, or a thoughtless impulse, or something else, he wasn't sure, and he didn't want to speculate.
Reno took the shirt with a nod, rubbing it over his head to partially dry his hair before tossing it back at Patrick with a smirk. He wandered over to the other side of the couch. "Thanks. Want a towel?"
Patrick's mouth fell open slightly as he caught the shirt. He scoffed, but matched Reno's smirk and shook his head. "I'm good," he said, decided that since his shirt was already soaked, he might as well dry his hair with it, too. He tossed it aside and sat back down, releasing a small breath. "Are you still too sober?"
Reno rubbed his wrists together and looked around. The lines of his apartment were uncomfortably sharp. "Yeah. I'm gonna grab a shirt." He disappeared up the stairs, then peered down at Patrick from over the landing. "Did you want to come back up here?"
The question made Patrick pause and frown, a little confused. He didn't get up from the couch, but eventually he did tilt his head back so he could stare up to roughly where Reno should be standing. "You trying to go back to sleep?"
Reno disappeared up into the rafters without responding. He dropped back down to the landing a minute later, wrestling a sweater over his head. “No. Don’t wanna be down there anymore.”
Well, he didn’t want to be alone down here. Patrick pushed himself from the couch, drank some of Reno’s (now cold) water, and searched in the dark for his shirt. It was damp and Patrick still felt the chill from the rain, so he took the blanket up with him, pulling it over his shoulders as he ascended the stairs.
Reno eyed Patrick somewhat warily when he appeared at the top of the stairs, but when he sat back on the bed, he left a clear space beside him. “Share the blanket.”
The cautious look made Patrick flare with a mixture of shame and annoyance. He pulled the blanket off of him, but stood there for a moment, not joining Reno on the bed. In the end, he just tossed the fabric down and wandered over to the window; it was starting to become his perch since the nightmares began again. His cigarettes were in his jacket, which he left beneath the glass— he’d known and prepared for this. As soon as he shrugged on the coat Patrick pulled out his pack and sat down, staring out into the nighttime.
Reno wrapped the blanket around his shoulders and huddled down. It had taken a while for him to feel the temperature outside, but now he was chilled through. While Patrick stared out the window, he watched the back of Patrick’s head. There was that sense of déjà vu again- for a second he could see, so clearly, blond hair instead of brown. It was ridiculous. Will had never even seen this apartment and despite the surface similarities between the two of them, Patrick and Will were far apart in Reno’s mind. He pressed his hands to his eyes again to the get the image out of his head. “Guess sleeping pills would make it worse, huh? The dreams.”
"Dunno," Patrick answered as he lit his— fourth, fifth cigarette? He didn't even know how many he'd had at this point. His tasted slightly different, and Patrick coughed slightly on the first inhale. "I never tried sleeping pills," he admitted. He never tried, because he never had to. He'd fixed his nightmares himself before he was old enough to be allowed to swallow any. A bitter sting spread over his chest on his next inhale. "Might sleep through the nightmares, though."
With the blanket still curled around his shoulders, Reno moved to the space on the floor beside his bed. If he was up, he might as well stretch. He folded over his legs. “Could make ‘em worse. Took some when I was still in school for stress dreams, it made them more fucked up and I couldn’t wake up.” Reno sat back up and moved one of his legs behind him before folding over again.
Patrick almost asked Reno if this was a dare. "I don't really care if they're more fucked up," he said. It was unclear to him if he was agreeing to an offer or not. "Not like I can't take it."
Did Patrick ever get tired of all the posturing? It didn’t seem like it. Reno flopped down to lie on his back, wondering why he was even trying to help. “Good for you.”
He was sick of his cigarette, so he lowered the hand holding it to his knee. Patrick breathed out something close to a laugh and glanced back at Reno. "Are you fucking saying you have some, then? Or just giving me some advice?"
“Yeah, I got some. I got everything.” Reno propped himself up on his elbows to look at Patrick, expressionless. “You gonna be a dick about it?”
The words stung more than Patrick was willing to admit. His expression hardened as his eyes settled on a random spot on the wall. Aren't I always? he almost snapped back. Once again, the temptation to just leave nearly brought him to his feet. But he was exhausted, and it was cold outside, and he didn't want to walk through the rain. "No. Fuck, Reno," he sighed, dragging his hand down his face. "I'm just fucking tired."
Reno felt around beside the mattress until he clasped a hand around a small bottle. He tossed it towards Patrick’s feet. “If you want to try it.” Sinking onto his back again, Reno’s eyes unfocused as he stared up into the rafters, trying to piece together vague shapes from the shadows there.
Patrick stared down at the bottle, spinning it around with a nudge of his foot. He reached down to pick it up, but didn't take its contents right away. Instead, he finished smoking, despite how sick it was making him. Eventually, his mouth dry and feeling a little nauseous, Patrick pried the cap open. He hesitated, shook two into his hand, then put one back. He swallowed the pill dry. "This is gonna fuck me up even more with the whiskey, huh," he said as he recapped the bottle. Patrick laughed a little. "Fuck. I didn't even think about that." Shrugging out of his jacket, he stood up and walked over to the bed. He placed the bottle beside Reno and lowered himself onto the mattress.
Reno shook a couple pills from the bottle and closed his fist around them, then threw the bottle down the stairs. He waited until he couldn’t hear it moving anymore. “Hasn’t killed me yet.” He rolled onto his side to face Patrick, expression blank as his eyes scanned over Patrick’s face. “Maybe they’ll make you discover a new power.”
He returned the stare for a long as he could, which was only a few seconds, then his eyes flickered up to the damp hair still sticking to Reno's forehead. "Has that happened to you?"
“Ha.” Reno only now took the two pills and swallowed. “I think I hit that peak a few years ago. All downhill from here.”
Patrick breathed out a small laugh, but it sounded hollow. He didn't want to think about this, so he angled his face toward the rafters and closed his eyes. "I guess we'll figure it out," he mumbled. "I'll come say hey if I can."
"I'll be sad if you don't." Reno's eyes stayed open, glinting in the darkness as he watched Patrick's face. It would be a while before he got back to sleep himself, he could feel that for sure. "See you in dreamland."

1787-1865 - The U.S. legally allows slavery even as other, less democratic nations abolish it
November 3, 1818 - American cavalry kills 186 unsuspecting Muscogee warriors, as well as women and children, just outside of Alexandria, Alabama
1830 - 1850 - American laws such as the Indian Removal Act force several Native American tribes west. Thousands of Native Americans die in what becomes known as the Trail of Tears
August 1-2, 1832 - American troops kill 150 Sauk and Fox Native American men, women, and children near Victory, Wisconsin
May 26, 1836 - Congress passes the “gag rule,” agreeing not to consider any measures on the issue of slavery and leaving more than 2 million African Americans in captivity and forced labor
October 24, 1840 - Colonel Moore’s rangers kill 140 Comanche men, women, and children along the Colorado River
April 25, 1846 - February 3, 1848 - U.S. President James K. Polk intentionally escalates tensions between the U.S. and Mexico, resulting in the Mexican-American War, which leads to the deaths of 25,000 Mexicans and 13,000 Americans, and amounts to nothing more than a land grab for the U.S.
May 15, 1850 - The U.S. army begins a bloody series of attacks on Native Americans by slaughtering nearly 100 Pomo people on Bo-no-po-ti Island in California
September 18, 1850 - Congress enacts the Fugitive Slave Act, which allows slaveowners to retrieve runaway slaves from “free” states and effectively makes the whole nation unsafe for people fleeing slavery
April 23, 1852 - An American sheriff leads 70 men to kill more than 150 Wintu people in Hayfork Valley in California
September 2, 1855 - American troops kill 86 Sioux men, women, and children at Blue Water Creek in Nebraska
January 29, 1863 - American soldiers under Colonel Patrick Connor kill 280 Shoshone men, women, and children outside of Preston, Idaho

November 27, 1868 - Colonel Custer’s cavalry kills as many as 140 Cheyenne warriors and 75 Cheyenne women and children as they sleep in Roger Mills County, Oklahoma
January 23, 1870 - The U.S. army kills nearly 200 Piegan Blackfeet Native Americans at the Marias River in the Montana Territory
March 31, 1877 - The Federal Government ends Reconstruction in the South, allowing the rise of Jim Crow laws and legalized lynchings for nearly a century and going back on the promise of “40 acres and a mule” for all freed slaves
May 6, 1882 - The Chinese Exclusion Act becomes law, preventing any further immigration of Chinese people into the U.S.
December 29, 1890 - American cavalry kills as many as 250 Sioux men, women, and children at Wounded Knee, South Dakota
April 21 - August 13, 1898 - False suspicions and warmongering following the sinking of the USS Maine push the U.S. into a war with Spain that enables America to interfere in the affairs of Cuba and the Philippines
February 4, 1899 - July 2, 1902 - The U.S. wages a war against the First Philippine Republic after forcibly acquiring the Philippines from Spain that results in the deaths of nearly 250,000 Filipinos
1902 - 1946 - The U.S. occupies the Philippines and establishes a colonial system there that gives America complete control of the Philippine economy (Even in granting independence in 1946, the U.S. insisted upon certain conditions that extended American dominance)
May 16, 1918 - Congress passes the Sedition Act, which makes it illegal for anyone to speak against the flag or the United States, and the U.S. government proceeds to convict over a thousand people, even after World War I ends
May 31 - June 1, 1921 - Racial tensions in Tulsa, Oklahoma explode into riots after several African Americans attempt to prevent a lynching. Police officers join in with white rioters in destroying the predominantly Black community of Greenwood as the National Guard fires on civilians with a machine gun and private planes drop dynamite on Black homes. Officials attempt to cover up the incident by only reporting 39 deaths, but Red Cross data from the time shows at least 300
May 26, 1924 - The Immigration Act of 1924 is enacted, which completely prohibits the immigration of all Asians and Arabs
February 19, 1942 - March 20, 1946 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt takes executive action to relocate all Japanese Americans to internment camps in accordance with widespread racism and xenophobia following the attack on Pearl Harbor
1945 - 1990 - The U.S. government employs ex-Nazi scientists and leaders in an attempt to gain a scientific and technological upper hand over the USSR in the Cold War
1952 - 1970 - The U.S. Air Force operates Project Blue Book, a “study” on UFOs following the rise of sightings and fears about the Soviet Union’s space program. Those who worked on the project have since stated that their actual goal with Blue Book was to debase and deny any claims of UFOs, instead of actually investigating
November 1, 1955 - April 30, 1975 - The U.S. engages in a controversial war in Vietnam in hopes of “containing” the spread of communism. The war leaves 4 million dead on all sides, and ends with a victory for communist North Vietnam
August 1956 - 1971 - The FBI uses a special organization called COINTELPRO to infiltrate and cause divisions in organizations they perceive as potentially dangerous. Targets include many nonviolent Civil Rights and socialist groups, and records indicate that for a long time, the FBI was wiretapping Martin Luther King, Jr. COINTELPRO was also involved in deliberately escalating the tensions that led to Malcolm X’s assassination. Even after the organization was exposed in 1971, the FBI continued to unapologetically use counterintelligence programs based on spreading misinformation about nonviolent targets
August 28, 1968 - Some of the 23,000 police brought in to control 10,000 anti-war protesters at the Chicago Democratic National Convention begin using tear gas and other violent tactics against protesters and bystanders indiscriminately
1973 - 2008 - Incarceration rates increase exponentially with measures like “The War on Drugs.” African American men take the worst of this, making up a wildly disproportionate part of the prison population. Even today, nearly 1 in 3 black men will at some point face prison or jail
February 28 - April 19, 1993 - The ATF and FBI take part in a standoff with an armed religious sect known as Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas. When Attorney General Janet Reno pushes them to make an assault, the ATF attacks the building where the Branch Davidians are hiding out, ultimately killing 82 men, women, and children
2002 - present - The U.S. operates a base in Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, where prisoners labeled “terrorists” are held without trial. Leaked documents show that many of these prisoners have only very weak connections to terrorists, such as living nearby, and show that waterboarding is being used to interrogate suspected terrorists
January 11, 2013 - Freedom of information activist Aaron Swartz commits suicide after months of sporadic charges brought against him by the FBI
June 2013 - Edward Snowden leaks documents showing that the U.S. government was spying on millions of people's emails and online conversations and collecting intelligence documents from other countries. This domestic spying is very likely ongoing, and Edward Snowden, if he was ever to return, would face federal charges
2014 - present - The U.S. population is 13.3 percent black, yet 26 percent of victims of police shootings are black. Among these victims is 12-year-old Tamir Rice, fatally shot by a police officer who was never criminally charged
(I put this together a few months ago, but I felt that today was the right day to post it. There are hundreds more incidents that I haven’t compiled here, but these are just a few of the messed-up things that our “free country” has done right under our noses. It’s time to stop acting like America, or any nation, for that matter, is anything more than a state monopoly on violence.)

Make a splash with a cool pool
This glamorous plunge pool in Elsternwick starred on TV reno show The Block in 2017. All pools pictured are by Franklin Pools. Pictures: Patrick Redmond Did you spend the summer holidays wishing youd taken the plunge and put in a pool? Its never too late there is always next summer to look forward to! So, where to start? First thing is to determine what you want out of your pool, says award-winning landscape designer and director of Franklin Pools David Franklin. Do you want a family-sized pool where playtime is the focus? Or do you work during the day and come home late at night? In this case, youre probably looking for something you can just slip in and out of, so a plunge pool may be more suitable, said Mr Franklin, known for his work on TV renovating shows Reno Rumble and The Block. Here, Mr Franklin shares important points to consider before putting in a pool.
Consider what size pool you really need. Location Check if your site has easy access, otherwise you might need building equipment and even the pool craned in, adding to the cost. Dirt from the pool dig might also need to be craned out. Mr Franklin recommended not having the pool in the centre of the backyard because it made the garden space less usable. Instead, locate it to the side and integrate it with the natural surroundings, while still allowing enough space for other garden activities. Dont put it too far from the house, he said. Bring it closer to your home and outdoor dining area so it becomes a feature you can enjoy when entertaining. He advised looking at the design and site together, not separately. Think about what size best suits your home and garden layout, which is where a pool builder with a landscape-design background can really help.
Locate your pool to the side of the yard and integrate the landscaping. Tiles Mr Franklin said lining the pool with glass tiles was definitely on trend, particularly blue tiles, which he said beautifully captured a holiday-resort feel. At least 95 per cent of our pools now are fully tiled. It gives a better look, better finish and keeps the inside of the pool cleaner, he said. However, he urged people to be wary of cheap glass-tile imports, which had been known to fall off.
Blue tiles will capture a resort-style feel. Costs Apart from excavation, other costs include design and landscaping and, of course, day-to-day running and maintenance. I would look at using a three-speed water pump. You can get ones that start on a high speed then drop this down to a lower speed, making it more economical to run, Mr Franklin said. And invest in a quality robotic cleaner because nobody likes spending time cleaning the pool. Alternatively, he said, an in-built pool-cleaning system was a smart move but more costly and had to be considered at the design stage. In terms of structure, fibre-glass pools are cheaper as they are made off-site, while concrete pools are pricier because theyre poured on-site.
Take all the costs, including maintenance, into account. Design Mr Franklin said to carefully consider the design of the area adjoining the pool and what could be added to extend your pleasure. Think about adding features, such as a day bed or seating, where you can relax beside the water. Glass windows in the pool are also popular because they provide transparency and make the pool feel bigger, he said. Youll be able to see straight into the pool from inside the house as well, which adds to the wow factor. Consider creating different levels in and around the pool. It makes the design look interesting and makes the pool fun. It also provides areas where you can sit and talk, even when in the water. Also consider a hand-poured, honed-concrete ledge. It will create a shadow-line effect that defines the perimeter and is something the kids can use to jump into the water. It looks fantastic and creates the effect that the pool is virtually floating, Mr Franklin said.
Adding features such as a day bed will heighten your enjoyment. Mistake to avoid All too often, people want pools that are too big and far too deep. Theyre after a 10m x 8m pool thats eight-foot (2.4m) deep all the way through. It makes the pool unplayable, Mr Franklin said. Tips for new pools Here is more advice from Mr Franklin for those considering putting in a pool: Install an app on your phone to remotely clean the pool and set the water temperature. This way, the pool will be ready to enjoy as soon as you get home. Set lights on a timer so the pool becomes a garden feature at night. Break up hard and soft surfaces to create design balance and make the colour of the water pop. Think paving with an area of decking. Go for a magnesium-based water treatment. Natural filtration systems, especially ones with an ozone element, are healthier on the skin, have no odour and give the cleanest, clearest water. Combine solar and gas systems to heat the pool and spa. Solar will generally do most of the work and is very cost efficient. Gas heating can boost the temperature quickly if it hasnt quite reached your ideal. www.franklinpools.com.au

Bob Davie’s New Mexico is overachieving mightily, but is too one-sided
The Lobos have got to get better than awful on defense in order to keep this up.
This preview was published April 7 and has since been updated.
In an age of increasingly competent pass attacks, the best way to navigate close games might still be to run the option.
Each year, I post an updated list of coaching overachievers and underachievers.
My second-order wins concept looks at single-game win expectancy figures.
The idea behind win expectancy is simple: It takes the key stats from a game (success rates, explosiveness, field position factors, and other factors that end up going into the S&P+ ratings), mashes them together, and says, "With these stats, you probably could have expected to win this game X percent of the time."
Add those figures up over the course of a season, and you get a glimpse of what a team could have expected its record to be.
Second-order wins are good for figuring out which teams might have been a bit lucky.
In 2015, the four teams which overachieved their second-order win total the most were Northwestern, Houston, Michigan State, and Iowa. The four combined for 47 actual wins, when their second-order win total was just 37.3.
In 2016, the tables turned; win expectancy said those teams should have won about 28.3 games, and they won 27. They fell back in line with expectations.
Through the years, certain coaches have managed to consistently overachieve, though. I haven’t posted this year’s list yet, but heading into 2016, Navy’s Ken Niumatalolo topped the overachievers list, averaging 1.1 more wins per season than second-order wins would’ve expected. Kansas State’s Bill Snyder was second at plus-0.9 per year. (Spoiler: they’ll be the top two in the updated list. They were both projected to win 7.2 games in 2016; they both won nine.)
Why am I mentioning this in a New Mexico preview? Easy: New Mexico overachieved drastically for the last two years. Second-order wins suggested the Lobos should have won about 5.1 games in 2015 and 7.5 in 2016; they won seven and nine, respectively.
The Lobos were the No. 5 overachiever in 2015, No. 10 in 2016.
One easy explanation: randomness doesn’t correct itself immediately. Just because you overachieved one year doesn’t mean you’ll revert the next. It’s hard to win nine games with one of the 10 worst defenses in the country, as the Lobos did last year. Maybe that’s not something they can count on, even if they did it two years in a row.
But maybe it’s the option. Niumatalolo runs it. The read option is one of Snyder’s base concepts, as is true for the No. 3 coach on last year’s list, Gus Malzahn. Maybe there’s something to be said for mastering deception in key moments.
In 2016, New Mexico had its best offense yet under Davie. The Lobos combined option-level efficiency (19th in rushing success rate) with big-play capability not typically seen in an option attack. They couldn’t pass, and it didn’t matter because you couldn’t force them to. And when things got tight, the Lobos just did what they do. They went 5-1 in one-possession games and won nine games for the first time in nine years and only the fifth time in 85.
When Davie came to Albuquerque in 2012, he didn’t have any lasting marriage with the option attack. When he was head coach at Notre Dame, his best offense came the year Jarious Jackson threw for 2,700 yards. But he saw the option for what it was: a way to control the ball and keep a defense flat-footed enough to negate athleticism advantages. And he hired former Sam Houston State coordinator Bob DeBesse to master it.
The results have been undeniable. Winners of seven combined games in the four years before Davie’s arrival, the Lobos raised the bar to about four wins per year, then broke through in Davie’s fourth and fifth years. They have ranked in the top 50 in Off. S&P+ for three of the last four years and hit 40th last fall. They win despite almost no defensive progress whatsoever.
I’m struggling to figure out how maintainable it is, though. Winning five of six one-possession games is almost never sustainable, but overachieving in general might be, especially with what the Lobos return — namely, quarterback Lamar Jordan, running backs Richard McQuarley and Tyrone Owens, and four offensive linemen with starting experience.
Still, the defense is starting over once again. Davie loaded up on JUCO transfers (two tackles, four linebackers, four defensive backs) to try to turn the tide. That all-in strategy could pay off, or it could just assure UNM is starting over again soon. Regardless, Davie — the most coveted defensive coordinator in America for a while in the 1990s — knows how much of a lead weight a bad defense can be. And he’ll need to do something about it if he wants to maintain these win totals.
2016 in review
2016 New Mexico statistical profile.
Second-order wins weren’t skewing in UNM’s favor early on. After an easy win over South Dakota, the Lobos played tossups with awful New Mexico State and Rutgers teams and lost both. They stole one back against San Jose State, but following a 28-point loss to Boise State, they were 2-3, and bowl hopes were remote.
The offense was beginning to find its groove, though, and following a shootout win over Air Force, the defense improved just enough to make a difference.
First 5 games (2-3): Avg. percentile performance: 30% (56% offense, 26% defense) | Yards per play: UNM 6.4, Opp 6.0 (plus-0.4)
Last 8 games (7-1): Avg. percentile performance: 45% (64% offense, 41% defense) | Yards per play: UNM 7.2, Opp 6.4 (plus-0.8)
You were guaranteed big plays and points in New Mexico games. I doubt that changes.
Offense
Full advanced stats glossary.
Davie’s approach has been beautifully pragmatic. It’s as if everything he’s done has come from the mindset of: “We can’t be good at everything, so we’re going to be good at a couple things.”
Davie has only once signed a class that ranked better than seventh in the Mountain West, but of the 28 three-stars he’s signed (per the 247Sports Composite) in the last five years, 11 have been either quarterbacks or skill position guys. He found an offense that can draw athletes, and he’s worked around everything else.
The results are undeniable. Despite ranking 104th in Passing S&P+, New Mexico had the most well-rounded offense in the MWC in terms of efficiency and explosiveness.
The Lobos do have some pieces to replace. Teriyon Gipson rushed for nearly 3,000 yards over the last three years and averaged an absurd 8.6 yards last fall. Slot receiver Dameon Gamblin was the closest thing the Lobos had to a possession receiver. Left tackle Reno Henderson was all-conference.
Still, they seem equipped to replace those pieces. Tyrone Owens split feature back duties with Gipson and between-the-tackles guy Richard McQuarley, and he was nearly as explosive as Gipson. Plus, junior Diquon Woodhouse appeared deserving of more carries (he gained 232 yards in just 27 rushes), and former star recruits Kentrail Moran and Daevon Vigilant are ready after redshirt years.
Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports
Tyrone Owens
At receiver, everybody but Gamblin returns. That includes not only reserve slot guys like Emmanuel Harris and Anu Somoye, but also a host of big-play options. Patrick Reed, Q’ Drennan, and Matt Quarells [update: Quarells has transferred to Iowa] combined to average 19.5 yards per catch in 2016, and Delane Hart-Johnson averaged 29.7 per catch in 2015 before missing last season after a car wreck. All that is required of the New Mexico passing game is the occasional play-action bomb, and the Lobos appear capable.
As for the line, injuries and shuffling led to seven players starting at least four games in 2016, and four return. It’s unclear how deep the line may be, but among those without starting experience, UNM boasts seven linemen who were either three-stars or high-twos. Line doesn’t appear to be a concern unless there are several injuries.
Then there’s Lamar Jordan. Listed as a receiver when he was being recruited out of Frisco (Tex.) Centennial High School, Jordan has been the perfect man to helm the Lobo option. He has taken a lot of hits and has yet to play a full season, but he’s rushed for 2,158 yards and thrown for 2,620, and he’s been the leader of two top-50 offenses. It would be a surprise if he weren’t leading a third.
And if or when he gets hurt, junior JaJuan Lawson, redshirt freshman Tevada Tuioti, or JUCO transfer Cameron Burston should be able to fill in. Burston is more of a drop-back passer, so he could fill a passing downs role at times regardless of Jordan’s health.
Barring a rash of injury, New Mexico has the pieces to run the offense it wants, and the Lobos could do it even better than last year.
Ivan Pierre Aguirre-USA TODAY Sports
Lamar Jordan and company
Defense
As impressive as it has been watching Davie’s pragmatism create one of the most dangerous mid-major offenses, it is strange to watch a Davie team struggle defensively.
In five seasons, New Mexico has ranked 117th or worse in Def. S&P+ four times and peaked (I probably could have used quotation marks there) at 107th in 2015. Veteran Kevin Cosgrove took over the unit in 2014 and engineered slight improvement for two years, but the 2016 defense regressed once more.
New Mexico knew what it wanted to be; the Lobos just couldn’t pull it off. They were good at attacking the run, ranking 76th in Rushing S&P+, 53rd in Adj. Line Yards, and 45th in stuff rate. In the MWC, being able to hinder a ground attack is Mission No. 1.
Mission No. 2, however, is “Don’t be completely awful against the pass.” Mission failed. After what appeared to be a decent start against woeful attacks (passer rating through three games: 122.1), the Lobos proved incapable of stopping teams that knew what they were doing. Over the final nine games of the regular season, they allowed a passer rating of 162, giving up a deadly combination: 62 percent completion rate, 15.7 yards per completion. Even in a run-happy conference, you can’t allow that.
It’s hard to see why 2017 will be different. Four of the top six tacklers on the line return, as do three of six at linebacker. But the top four tacklers in the secondary do not. Granted, due to injury, a lot of defensive backs saw the field, and the Lobos do return four DBs who made at least nine tackles. But three began as either walk-ons or unrated recruits, and none defensed more than three passes.
New Mexico needs a blood (and talent) transfusion in the back, and all hope will be in recent recruits. Davie signed four JUCO transfers — including three-stars Willy Hobdy and Jalin Burrell — to plump up the depth chart, and three-star youngsters like Corey Hightower and Nico Bolden will potentially see the field soon.
The good news is that the bar is really low. But that doesn’t mean it will be better, especially when you add in the fact that the players UNM does have to replace up front are the ones who sacked the quarterback. Of the four who had at least two sacks last year, three are gone.
Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports
Kimmie Carson
It’s still hard to worry as much about the front, though. Linebacker Kimmie Carson is solid, and end Garrett Hughes had 6.5 sacks last year. Plus, the Lobos employed a good-sized rotation, and 2016 understudies like end Cody Baker and linebackers Austin Ocasio and Alex Hart will probably be able to play about as well as the guys they’re replacing.
The intriguing part is that Davie also loaded up on JUCOs up front, adding two tackles and four linebackers. And his best-regarded signing class, the 2016 batch, now features exciting redshirt freshmen like end Teton Saltes and linebacker Rhashaun Epting. The pass defense might not be better, but at least the run defense might not be worse.
Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports
Special Teams
I can talk about the option all I want, but here’s something else that can flip close games: special teams. Jason Sanders was the second-most efficient place-kicker in the country per S&P+ (he was 6-for-6 on kicks longer than 40 yards) and one of the best kickoffs guys as well. Plus, Elijah Lilly was rather all-or-nothing in kick returns, but the alls were impressive.
UNM ranked 25th in Special Teams S&P+, and with everybody back, this should be a strength again, even if punter Corey Bojorquez outkicks his coverage at times.

Per S&P+, UNM had one of the worst defenses in the country and lost more of last year’s production than almost any defense in the country. The result: a projected defense that ranks dead last in FBS.
I don’t think it will be that bad — loading up on JUCO transfers might be dicey in the long-term but should lead to short-term overachievement — it’s not going to be good. And that means New Mexico should look like the New Mexico we’ve seen in recent years.
There are two ways to look at New Mexico’s schedule.
The optimistic way points out that every home game is winnable, and if the Lobos go 5-1 at home, they’re almost certainly bowling again.
The pessimistic way notes that every road game is losable, and a few (Boise State, Tulsa, Texas A&M, San Diego State, maybe Wyoming) are very losable.
The ceiling and floor are close together, though if the good fortune turns at all, reaching a bowl will be a bit of an accomplishment.
