Kari Wergeland, who hails from Davis, California, is a librarian and writer. She moved to Oregon at the age of 14 and eventually attended the University of Oregon, where she earned a B.A. in English. She also holds an M.L.S. in Librarianship from the University of Washington and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing with an emphasis in poetry from Pacific University. El maratón femenino en Budapest, con 1-2 para Etiopía y presencia sudamericana

Las fondistas etíopes ratificaron su dominio en maratón y concretaron el 1-2 de la prueba femenina en el Campeonato Mundial de Budapest, en la cálida mañana de este sábado 26 de agosto, en el comienzo de la penúltima jornada. El maratón masculino se disputará mañana y también allí los etíopes llegan conlas máximas ambiciones. Amane Beriso Shankule cruzó primero la meta en la Plaza de los Héroes de la capital húngara con un registro de 2:24:23, quedando el segundo puesto para la vencedora del año pasado en Oregón, Gotyom Gebreslase, que ahora terminó en 2:24:34. Las etíopes estuvieron por copar el podio ya que Yalemzer Yehualaw –vencedora del maratón de Londres 2022- también estuvo junto a las líderes, pero sufrió el calor en los tramos finales y fue desbordada por la marroquí Fatima Ezzahra Gardadi (medalla de bronce con 2:25:17) y por la experimentada israelí Lornah Salpeter (cuarta con 2:25:38). Yehualau consiguió el quinto puesto con 2:26:13, seguida por la mejor entre las keniatas, Rosemary Wanjiru, quien marcó 2:26:42. Su compañera Sellye Chepyego Kaptich quedó en el puesto siguiente con 2:27:09. Otra atleta que ha lucido en la última década, la estadounidense Lindsay Flanagan, consiguió el 9° puesto en 2:27:47. La mejor entre las sudamericanas fue la ecuatoriana Silvia Patricia Ortiz, 29ª. con 2:35:09. La ecuatoriana Andrea Paola Bonilla abandonó. En total, 70 maratonistas largaron a las 7.00 (hora local) con un clima de 23°C. Las etíopes desplegaron un juego de equipo que les permitió alejarse del resto del grupo líder hacia el km. 30. Shankule, quien tiene un antecedente de 2:14:58 con la victoria en Valencia 2022 (tercer registro mundial de la historia) se convirtió a partir de allí en clara favorita. Curiosamente la veterana ecuatoriana Chacha (40 años) fue la que tomó la delantera en los primeros 5 km. que pasó en 17:48, tres segundos por detrás del grupo líder.
