The Goddess must rise. These boys forget the force that gave them life, standing upon the bodies of women in blinding self-praise. It is out of the highest motherly love of compassion that we taught and allow them to walk upon us and our land, eat the fruit that we provide, mimic our creative energy, suckle the milk and honey from our breast while they rape, silence, disrespect and oppress us in egoic illusions. They think they can heal without us. Without them, we are balance, harmony, peace. Without us, they cease to exist. This tower must fall down to the earth. #Mbokodolead: From FMF to the digital footprint of female triumph.
#Feesmustfall is a social and political movement that significantly changed the face of student politics, race relations and socio-economic truths in South African universities. This hashtag helped students around the country assemble, discuss and keep up with movements from province to province; a clear indication of the power of social media. When incidents were captured, this hashtag was used as the online meeting point for people to catch up, and document their experiences during protests and meetings.
The movement, though pivotal when unearthing issues of financial and racial prejudice, bore a different injustice that seemed to be forced into silence. Women within the movement found themselves having to fight hard to make their presence felt, as they were drowned out by male presence and dominance during the movement. I’d like to talk about the creation of #Mbokodolead as a hashtag that marked the beginning of a persistence to acknowledge intersectionality in the movement. I would also like to discuss how the hashtag is now used as a general term of female leadership and achievement independently from #Feesmustfall.
Ndlovu & Vraagom (2016) mention that the beginnings of the movements, including #Rhodesmustfall, were initially built on the acknowledgement of black struggle. With race, class and gender as evident intersectionalities within the movement, the suppression and favouring of certain forms of oppression began to come to light. Patriarchy’s head reared itself from within the movement, with people who did not identify as male finding themselves marginalised from a movement that should include them and their experiences that intersect with race, as students. A divide was surely created from hereon, with members of the movement who did not identify as male began to make their voices known and heard. The task here, to let it be known that this movement extends far beyond racial politics.
During an interview with Power FM (2015), Anele Nzimande, Former Vice Chair Of The Law Students Council explains that #Mbokodolead was created to include women from various political affiliations on campus, who were commonly enduring sexism during the movement. She notes that the students themselves have “an innate rejection to women’s voices”, which attributed greatly to the reinforcement of male dominance within the movement. Magu (2015) recounts the sidelining of women during  the June 16  student protest of 1976 and the emphasis that was put on the racial aspect of the movement. Within this, the leadership role would, by default, be taken on by men and result in women being supporters rather than contributors. She continues on to describe the quick realisation to the déjà vu of silence that women once experienced once before. This changed the direction of the social movement after women at Wits were not permitted to lead in song. As a result,  the women branched off from the initial movement to created their own - #Mbokodoloead. This would become the home of an alternative documentation of the movement, without male lead discourse and direction. It would also aim at giving a sincere look at what was truly happening in the movement.
It makes absolute sense why #Mbokodolead so desperately needed to become a thing. When Magu continues on, discussing personal encounters with the dismissal of women and members of the LGBTIAQ+ community, it is clear that men in the movement expected #Feesmustfall to only address race. She describes seeing a poster written “end rape culture” and hearing a man say that instead, the poster should have read “end structural racism” instead. This indicates that rape culture and the safety of women, according to him and potentially many others, is far less of an issue than racism. Conversations and observations like this, due to how discreet the conversation was, would not have made it to any mainstream media. As far as they know, this incident never happened. For this reason, hashtags like #Mbokodolead and #Patriarchymustfall would create a platform for conversations like this to be known.
The warped view on injustice by men in the movement has a major role in the creation of #Mbokodolead, where it seemed that men could seemingly fight for racial equality and rights, but still harm women and LGBTQIA+ members within their race as an exhibition of dominance. An incident posted on Twitter where a lesbian woman is being strangled by men at Wits during an altercation (shown below) reinforces the statements which outline the control which men expect to have over anyone who does not identify as male in the movement. Beyond men, #Mbokodolead has managed to trickle through to be used as a way to identify women who are successful in areas other than #Feesmustfall. From job interviews, to selfies, this hashtag has found itself exclusively representing women, their milestones and their strength.
From #Feesmustfall to #Mbokodolead, the digital space has the ability to allow people to create upon ideas that currently exist. More so, women in this instance were able to find a unique way to recount their untold and unheard stories of prejudice. This could have been done another way, perhaps, but the connectivity social media allows between people works quickly enough for stories to be shared, and for a term to be redefined as it continues to live on the digital space.
