Book Review: Pathfinder AP #1, Rise of the Runelords Burnt Offerings

Yesterday, we looked at the very first hardback of the Pathfinder system, and today, we’re going back further to the very first Adventure Path under the Pathfinder name! That’s right, it’s Rise of the Runelords time!

By coincidence, I’ve actually started a playthrough of the revised compilation version of the AP in hardback, so it’s interesting to get to look at it through fresh eyes.

This was it, the beginning of an era, A new setting specifically made with D&D 3.5 in mind, and the start of what would become a full-fledged phenomenon.

For many people, this was the first look at the Lost Omens setting, with it’s own gods and lore and the promise of a rich ancient history that would rear it’s ugly head and give adventurers something or someone to fight to preserve the society of today.

So let’s talk about the actual adventure itself without spoiling anything! The adventure opens on a lovely festival consecrating a new temple when a goblin raid occurs! The party is tasked with fighting off the raiders as well as dealing with a few events in the aftermath, but soon after, it becomes clear that the goblins were actually working for someone, and the conspiracy runs surprisingly deep into the town’s past, as well as hinting at a sinister ancient power which will arise in the following adventures.

As one of the very first Pathfinder products, this book helped establish the look of the setting and the system, not to mention the lore! Everything from the schools of magic being tied to the seven deadly sins in the Ancient Thassalonian Empire, to the more relevant “10 facts about goblins” spiel that actually elevated goblins from being one of D&D’s personality-less generic evil humanoids to something so iconic and beloved that they’ve become one of the mascots of Paizo as a company.

Even though it was originally written as a 3.5 adventure, Burnt Offerings offered a rich setting with elements ranging from ancient magical empires to being a rumor-haunted region with at least 3 cryptids lurking nearby, to revitalizing the concept of goblins to being delightful little weirdos in addition to just “bad guys”.

On the other hand, I hope you like the new goblins because with the exception of a few monsters and the ringleaders of the conspiracy, goblins make up the majority of the fights in this adventure. Additionally, while it’s not super obvious in this particular adventure, but the Rise of the Runelords AP in general definitely draws upon the early Pathfinder themes of edgier, more adult lore with more blatant violence and dark themes than your average adventure, which isn’t for everyone.

That will do for today though, and I hope you enjoyed it! And if you enjoyed how Pathfinder revised goblins to be more interesting in this adventure, then you’ll love how they gave many more monsters a similar treatment with tomorrow’s subject!

What are the good pathfinder adventure paths? (I haven't read any of them)

These are my impressions from reading them (not playing them) and are biased by my preferred style of play:

Rise of the Runelords 1 - Burnt Offerings: Fairly solid, a good mix of social encounters, combat, and dungeon delving

Kingmaker 1 - Stolen Lands: This is the only adventure I have played. I am not a fan of hex crawls generally and this one felt particularly aimless. A lot of the stuff it does is setup that shines in later adventures, but it is a roughhhh start

K2 - Rivers Run Red: Hexploration is still too aimless, but the nation building mechanics help a lot with that, and there are some clever interactions between the two

K3 - The Varnhold Vanishing: Feels like the AP really hits it's stride here, much more direction in the hexploration. Would actually run this one

Carrion Crown 1 - The Haunting of Harrowstone: The town events and dynamics are actually quite neat, but they never really go anywhere. The stories of the spooky prison also didn't feel like they built on each other to become more than the sum of their parts. This is exacerbated by each part of this AP taking place in a different location which means almost nothing here can be built on. If the whole AP stayed in this one town which reacted to what you did this would actually be amazing. As it is, 5/10

CC 4 - Wake of the Watcher: Good lovecraftian fun, would run

CC 6 - Shadows of Gallowspire: A gauntlet with not a lot of story. Way too many liches, which I feel cheapens them. The rules for the gallowspire itself are neat tho

Shattered Star 1 - Shards of Sin: Got like five pages into this one and had to put it down. The first encounter just felt so cliché and manipulative. Maybe it gets better later

Mummy's Mask 1 - The half-dead city: The first half is a functional pyramid-delve that unfortunately has literally nothing to do with the rest of the AP. The second half has another pyramid-delve where the PCs accidentally stumble across the path of the McGuffin with little understanding of why it might be important, it didn't seem engaging as a hook. I believe that gets fixed in MM2, but it leaves this adventure feeling very hollow

Iron Gods 1 - Fires of Creation: Like Expedition to the Barrier Peaks this one felt gimmicky and "clever" in a way I would find frustrating as a player. A matter of taste. Unfortunately it also comes with a whole bunch of new and somewhat cumbersome rules to use

Agents of Edgewatch 1 - Devil at the Dreaming Palace: This one was solid, but felt like there was a lot of filler? Stage seemed to half twice as much stuff in it as necessary. Maybe this is fun at the table and helps fill out the fantasy of being detectives, but it was a frustrating read

Abomination Vaults 1 - Ruins of Gauntlight: Top 2 adventure, going to be running it next week! A megadungeon that cuts straight to the point, has a lot of interesting encounters as well as consequences that carry over between encounters, and narratives that crisscross it

AV2 - Hands of the Devil: I liked the sidetracking back to the town, felt very The Whispering Cairn, it is a pity none of the town stuff has consequences or follow-up down the line. The dungeon levels themselves kind of drag, feeling like there is maybe too much filler. You could probably cut out a third of it, a whole dungeon level's worth (and I would love to play it then)

AV3 - Eyes of Empty Death: Like AV2, but without the town side quests. Would probably slap as two levels instead of three

Fists of the Ruby Phoenix 1 - Despair on Danger Island: Another kind of aimless-feeling hexploration, and the dinner scene feels far too long when reading it (maybe it plays better)

FotRP 3 - King of the Mountain: A lot of nice payoffs to previous setup, the Celestial Dragon quest felt like it had slightly too many steps. Campy, bordering on self-parody at times. Whether that is a good or a bad thing is a matter of taste

Strength of Thousands 1 - Kindled Magic: Got five pages into this one and put it down because it was roleplay-heavy and I was looking for something combat focused. Those pages were amazing though and I'd recommend playing it. Kind of the opposite of Shards of Sin?

Quest for the Frozen Flame 1 - Broken Tusk Moon: This one starts off very slow and then moves into two bits of mediocre hexploration. The hexploration is better than that in Stolen Land due to the leadership mechanic and having something to run away from

QftFF 2 - Lost Mammoth Valley: Top 2 adventure, I think it loses out to Ruins of Gauntlight due to being the second adventure in a path rather than the first. An actually good use of hexploration, each part builds on the others. Good variety. I would have liked more opportunities to gain Reputation Points in the valley, it seems like grinding them out at the end would be a pain. And not letting the tribe participate in the battle at the end feels like a missed opportunity

QftFF 3 - Burning Tundra: It's fine. Leadership score really only gets used twice in the whole AP and that sucks? The hexploration in the middle seems like filler content. Overall fine though, better than most on this list

Honorable Mention - Emerald Spire Superdungeon: While not an adventure path it is similar in size in content. Unlike most megadungeons I've read (looking at you Dungeon of the Mad Mage) it largely keeps up the variety and pacing throughout. It does this by having each level be written by a different author and giving them more or less free rein. Megadungeons feel like they'd be a slog to me, but if I were to run any of them (besides Abomination Vaults) it would be this

I just looked at the cover of the 4e Player’s Handbook 1 for the first time in years and realized the wizard on the cover is in almost the same get-up as Seoni, the Pathfinder iconic Sorceress. 4e’s PHB predates the PF RPG release by a year, but Seoni’s character art debuted in Burnt Offerings (Rise of the Runelords #1), which originally came out as a 3.5 module a year before the 4e book (and a month after 4e’s announcement).

This isn’t pure coincidence, either: both are works by Wayne Reynolds. I wonder what’s up.

Most of the haunts are tied to events long in the past. A skill roll is allowed to notice the haunt before it strikes. The haunts act like traps, but can only affect and be seen by the character attuned to that haunt. This manifests in the form of seven haunts six haunts are assigned to individual PCs, with the seventh being universal. In addition to the ghouls and the killer’s murdered bride, the house is possessed by a failed lich. As I said, this doesn’t just mean undead. Multiple clues point toward his mansion house, so it’s not the case of there being only one solution. His earlier trip to Sandpoint was a big bluff, so there’s no need to worry about whether or not you played him in character when he showed up before. Conveniently, he’s had the opportunity to go insane. The murderer is an NPC introduced in Pathfinder 1. As a nice touch, several newly made ghouls have been dressed as scarecrows, just waiting for living creature to walk by. With the right skills, they can quickly uncover the murderer, but before they can act on this knowledge, they’re called upon to visit a farm now infested with ghouls. Even beyond investigating out of the goodness of their hearts, the PCs will likely be intrigued to learn that the murder victims are marked with the same seven pointed star they found in the goblin’s lair.Ĭlues can be found at the latest murder scene and by talking to townfolk. Bodies start showing up in Sandpoint, and the sheriff asks the party to investigate the gruesome murders. The adventure can start anytime after the bulk of Burnt Offerings is completed (and it is possible even before that previous adventure is finished). Pett realizes that horror doesn’t mean “lots of undead.” Although there will be plenty of ghouls, Pett also presents us with a murder mystery, a haunted house, and an evil cult. The Skinsaw Murders, written by Richard Pett, is a horror adventure. SPOILER WARNING- Being a review of an adventure, there will be information in here that will likely spoil your fun as a player. Most of the illustrations here are pencil sketches from the journal. The Pathfinder’s Journal took the form of excerpts from a journal. I could have done without the diseased rat. As I said, not bad, but they do seem out of place. While not bad, these two have exaggerated features leaning toward the grotesque. I’m less impressed by the Skinsaw Cultists and their leader. The Skinsaw Man is appropriately terrifying.

Several NPCs in the adventure are given full body images. Pathfinder is now two for two on location artwork. I’m not sure if this is the same artist responsible for the half-page pictures last issue, but these do appear to be brighter. Each gets a solo picture, and they share the other two. Inside, the iconics are featured in four half-page pictures- although, at this time only Valeros and Seoni had their character art done, so they’re the only ones featured. Reynolds remains one of my favorite fantasy artists, so the cover is a selling point for me. Sharing the cover is the second iconic, Seoni, tattooed sorcerer.

As with the goblins on Pathfinder 1, the ghouls have been revamped in appearance, now with bluish skin and long pointed ears. This time, a gang of ghouls (what is the collective noun for ghouls? A pack? My dictionary is silent on this matter) drags a wrapped corpse from a well, while in the background a party of adventurers (again, no help from my dictionary, but that must be the collective) approaches a creepy mansion. Once again, Wayne Reynolds does the cover. I have much fewer complaints about this issue’s art than I did for the first issue. Additionally, the adventure is structured in such a way that one could play just a chunk of it with almost no changes. The monsters are useable in any D20 game, and most of the other articles provide background information for playing in the Pathfinder setting. However, just as the October issue of Dragon has traditionally had a horror theme, so too does this issue’s adventure.įor those who aren’t interested in running a six part adventure, Pathfinder can still have value. It is not a magazine, but instead a 96 page soft cover perfect bound book. Pathfinder is published under the OGL and is compatible with D&D 3.5. In addition to the Pathfinder’s Journal and six new monsters, the city of Magnimar and the goddess Desna each receive coverage in articles. The featured adventure is for fourth level parties, and they should reach level eight by the end (although the next adventure is advertised as for seventh level characters). The Skinsaw Murders is the second issue of Pathfinder and the second part of the Rise of the Runelords adventure path.

“Harvest” / “Sigilla Magica” installation and ink drawings, gallery Circle 1, Berlin, Nov ’17

The candles have been lit, the incense has been burnt; my work now vibrates in the rooms of gallery Circle 1 until December 23rd. What started as a vague idea of creating artwork for a list of magical plants, has years later finally taken shape. Now was the point when everything fell into place naturally. It was preceded by searching and researching, trial and error, sowing, growing, loss and gain in the very basic and earth-bound occupation as a gardener and harvester. The first hand study of the actual plants laid the foundation, my rediscovered love for ink became the tool for manifesting my visions.

The installation is hence titled “Harvest” and consists of an earthen altar with dried plants and harvest related offerings: self baked bread, honey from the neighborhood and self-made beeswax candles. The souls and spirits that were contained in the once alive, now dead corpora of the plants, find a new house in the form of fetishistic ink drawings: the “Sigilla Magica” series.

With these new forms I also find an own language, which aims to both entertain and communicate memes to the viewer. 12 ink drawings reference 11 magical plants as well as the ‘queen bee’ – “Regina Bombina” – governing the vital interaction between plants and pollinators. In addition, 2 anthropomorphic drawings depict the Aconite and Mandragora in half-human form, as the armed and poison-dart struck “Wolf Shaman” and beheaded and re-headed “Regina Amandrakina” with her freakish offspring. Lastly, 2 botanical studies of the roots of the Aconite and Mandragora are meant to act as a bridge between abstraction and realism and honor the individual and fascinating shape of each in detail.

Who killed Jien Garson?

Arrival in Andromeda The novel Nexus Uprising describes how Sloane Kelly wakes up by accident in Andromeda. The Nexus is being torn apart as it moves through – what later will be described as – the Scourge. There are fires, doors are being ripped apart, systems are failing and a whole piece of the station breaks of. After Kelly saves herself and others from cryopods near her own, she wants to find Jien Garson, who she deeply admires. She heads for Operations. She firsts runs into Chen, a janitor, who also woke up by accident. He seems panicked, wants to get to safety badly. In another room, she finds an Asari that’s barely alive. She’s named T’vaan and with her last breath gives some details about the strange phenomenon that caused all the damage (hinting it’s not an attack, but something else, the Scourge we now know). She also tells Kelly to look for Garson in Chamber 00, where Garson’s cryopod is located. Chamber 00 is empty, all the pods already opened. There’s one person there. Foster Addison, with a head wound. “We were all up in Operations. For the arrival”, she tells Kelly. Kelly asks why she isn’t in Operations then. “I’d just left it to find Jien.” “She’s alive?” Kelly asks. “At last check. Before official launch of arrival protocols, the science team wanted to nail down final readings. Jien had just stepped out so when we were ready, I went to get her.” Kelly wants to know why Addison looked for Garson in Chamber 00. “I stopped in here for a sec. I had to use the… restroom.” Addison didn’t find Garson yet. “I was heading back to see if she’d returned when the whole ship lurched.” Kelly finds out T’vaan was also part of the science team. When Kelly and Addison arrive in Operations, there’s a lot of damage. They find the bodies of the Nexus’s senior leadership. But not Jien Garson. They find a list of everyone attending the ‘arrival ceremony’. Except for Addison and Garson they all died because of the Scourge. They find out that Jarun Tann is now in charge, or at least until Garson is found. He’s still in stasis at that moment. Meanwhile search parties are send out to look for Garson. 27+ hours after arrival in Andromeda In the 27 hours after arrival, Jien Garson is not yet found. Those who woke up by accident have to do a lot of stuff to save the mission. One of those things is to fix the oxygen in the Nexus. To do this, a large part of the Nexus is shut off from oxygen. Those who are awake (up to 600 pioneers) can only access a small part of the station. Then Kelly is called to the improvised morgue. Among the 100+ dead bodies, there’s a body bag. In it, is Jien Garson. “Where was she found?” asks Kelly. “In one of the apartments near Operations. We were doing a room to room, clearing bodies”, a tech (gaunt man with tired eyes) answers. A second life support-tech, his colleague, says: “Wounds are consistent with all the rest. Environmental damage. Significant burns. It’s… not a pretty sight.” Addison arrives as well. Kelly sees the last glimmer of hope bleeding from Addison’s eyes. Kelly pulls the body bag. She can’t piece together any evidence of identity at first. Much of Garson’s face is hidden under charred skin. The smell is terrible. Burnt and swollen flesh, left to rot for untold hours in open air. The Scourge survivors are accepting her death as a Scourge causality. At that time there are around 600 pioneers awake on the Nexus, confined to a limited area of the station. Among them, the killer? 14 months after arrival in Andromeda Pathfinder Ryder learned the official story about Garson’s dead: one of the casualties by the Scourge. He’s still investigating her apartment, curious for hints about a mysterious Benefactor that made the Andromeda Initiative possible. Tann doesn’t know about any Benefactor. SAM uses environmental data to reconstruct the scene of Garson’s death. SAM manages to do that with 82 percent precision. He generates an image of Garson lying on the bed in the apartment and ‘an additional unknown person’ standing next to it. It seems to be a male, but with 82 percent precision we can’t know that for sure, perhaps? “This was no accident. She was murdered”, says Ryder. “But… wait. This whole area was shuttered back then – didn’t open ‘til the Hyperion arrived. So what was Garson even doing here?” Further scans show a secret door to a hidden room. There are two datapads in there. Datapad 1: Voice: “This is Jien Garson, I don’t have much time, I’ve been hiding in the sealed-off sections of the Nexus since we got here. Someone’s trying to kill me. And now I can hear them down in the hydroponics area – they’re coming. I’ve embedded what I know in my VI in the Cultural Center. This log has the code. And whatever happens – oh god, they’re outside the door!” Datapad 2: Written: “Garson Notes. Entry 1.1 (2819). In 2179, once mentioned “A storm is coming.” Said “evidence was clear.” Meaning? Andromeda – why? Hyperion, still no contact. Where is Alec? Did they get him, too?” Ryder visits the VI in the Cultural Center. He hears her secret message on his private channel: “For years, there was a silent partner involved with the Initiative. The truth is, I was running out of money. Then a ‘benefactor’ stepped in. I didn’t ask questions. I never met them face-to-face. That was a mistake… I lied to everyone. Something big spooked them in the Milky Way, and now they’re moving 100,000 of us to Andromeda. I hope it’s all for the good, but… I have my doubts. And now I think they’re going to remove me. Alec Ryder and I had a codeword for this: “Fulcram.” He may have learned more.” Summing up Jien Garson was last seen alive at Operations, just before the Scourge hit the Nexus. After that she hid in her apartment, fearing for her life. One or multiple killers (she’s talking about her murderers in plural) tracked her down and killed her, making it look like another Scourge casualty. There is – in theory – a 27 hour window in which this could’ve happened. Potential suspects In Nexus Uprising there are couple of persona’s mentioned, who could be the killer. Although there’s a big chance the killer is not mentioned in the novel of course. Let’s run through a couple of them. Chen the janitor Chen is running around the Nexus on his own when Kelly encounters him. He appears to be in panic and might just be introduced by the writers to show the chaos. There is no reason – apart from him being mentioned – to assume he’s involved. Foster Addison Addison is the only surviving member of the ‘science team’ that woke up earlier in Chamber 00 to inspect first readings in Andromeda. Her reason for being in Chamber 00 (bathroom break) is suspicious. Unlike Kelly, Kesh and Tann the writers never describe her thoughts. You don’t know what she’s actually thinking. While Kelly, Kesh and Tann thoughts are described in detail, at the moment of arrival they all try their best for the greater good and are upset about Garson’s death. Furthermore, Addison is the first to discuss succession protocol while others are still hoping to find Garson alive. At the same time she seems upset Tann is ranked above her in that protocol (she didn’t know the order) and she still seems sad when she finds out Garson is definitely dead. William Spender Addison’s right hand, of who we know is a bit shady, was still in stasis when Garson was killed. He can’t be the killer. Jarun Tann Jarun Tann was also still in stasis when Garson died. So it wasn’t his way of taking over power. This is confirmed by his thoughts described by the writers. He never expected this to happen and just tries to do his best. The two life support-techs The two life support-techs that find Garson in her apartment could be suspicious. What were they doing there? According to the game that section was sealed-off, shuttered back. And Garson does describe men coming to her apartment in Datapad 1. But that’s far from proof, there could even be a slight writing inconsistency between the novel and the game about the section being sealed-off. Also, the life support staff was awakened by Sloane Kelly, so they weren’t awake during the initial hit by the Scourge. The Benefactor Garson suspects the mysterious Benefactor ordered (or even committed?) the murder. Further details about this Benefactor are in Alec Ryder’s logs and memories. It was the anonymous Benefactor, not Jien Garson, who first approached Alec about the Andromeda Initiative. He (or she) used Ellen Ryder’s disease to motivate Alec to cooperate, offering him his last straw to make SAM happen. Castis Vakarian tells Alec about the Reaper threat, while his son Garrus is still in C-Sec, so pretty short after Mass Effect 1. Alec tells the Benefactor about the Reaper threat, he or she already knew that ‘something’ was coming. But after it got confirmed by Alec, the Benefactor wants to hurry the Andromeda Initiative. When Alec arrives in Andromeda, there is a message from Jien Garson for him. ���Alec, this is Jien Garson. For the record, Year 2185. It’s about “Fulcrum.” I’m on the Nexus, and we’re going into stasis for the voyage. Looks like you’re already asleep. I’m very uncomfortable with our “benefactor,” and the fact that we still don’t know who they are… and all these lives in our hands. I should’ve done something sooner. This is all very troubling, Alec. Let’s talk as soon as you reach Andromeda.” He replies: “Jien, I got your message about “Fulcrum.” It’s now 2819. We reached Andromeda, but have no sign of the Nexus. I have the same concerns as you. In all likelihood, the Milky Way… well, something terrible happened there. At least the benefactor spared us from that. But why keep hiding? Something’s off. But we’ve got bigger problems at the moment – Habitat 7 may be a bust. Finding a home is all that matters now.” Traits of the Benefactor - Has a lot of money - Is interested in SAM - Was involved with the Initiative ‘for years’ (before ME1 it seems) - Was an early Reaper threat adopter (right after ME1) - Wanted to kill Jien Garson upon arrival in Andromeda Other clues? So, is the killer someone we already know? When did Jien Garson get murdered, who had motive and opportunity? Is the Benefactor the killer, or did he/she order it?

[[Summary: Finally, it's here! My longer series, starring the story of Wren Ryder and her relationship with the Angara Jaal, as well as her companions. This takes place post Andromeda, so please keep in mind that spoilers will be a-plenty. In this chapter, Wren contends with political situations and introduces Jaal to Scott, but her twin is displeased to hear that she hasn't disclosed everything to her new lover. But what secrets could she be holding?

The more colonists that came from stasis, the more protesters there were on the Meridian. Today, they crowded the docking bay, waiting for Wren Ryder to step off the Tempest, all wanting their voices to be heard. Loudly.

“What if I just… didn’t leave the Tempest this time? I could have all the important conversations on vidcon, buy supplies from there. No reason to deal with… all that.” An expansive hand gesture took in the crowds visible from the ship’s windows even as she turned to Jaal with a shrug. Out of all the places in their brand new galaxy, they had chosen to stay here, among their own kind. The protestors were all human, but that they had taken time out of their lives, fresh from the thaw, to protest her was sheer dedication. All these precious seconds taken just to argue with little old her. It was almost flattering.

“But then how would I meet your brother, dearest one?” Jaal had a point, but that didn’t mean Wren had to enjoy it.

Pulling her hoodie over her head, desperately wanting to put the actual hood up as a shield against the world, Wren joined the rest of her crew milling around the extended ramp. “Okay, you’re all off duty. He is terrified of the Bleaching and has worked with explosives for quite a while now. He's not a pyromaniac, though. He simply loves to find new uses of the black powder that makes pretty colors.

Jhony (Couldn't make it to the first session) - Half-Orc Rogue - Johny would have loved to be a pirate and have a life of adventure and treasure in Riddleport... sadly, the harsh conditions at sea are not his cup of tea. He's a larger than life Half-orc that doesn't consider himself one. After a horribly bet gone wrong, Johny was forced to flee the city and lay low for a while... he decided to go a nice little town not too far away from Magnimar to try his luck and enjoy the famed local cuisine.

So it begins...

Yulious, Yvan, Gunther and Aisha arrive to Sandpoint first thing in the morning through the Tanner's bridge. Valora sometimes helps as a bouncer at the Pixie's Kitten (they are her neighbors after all) specially now that the town has attracted a lot of tourists there ought to be some troublemakers and she wants to make sure the girls are safe. Yvan and Yulious debate if they should visit the brothel (do they have enough money?) but then remember that maybe, just maybe, it would be best to deliver the sacred statues of their gods to the Cathedral first. Gunther is directed to leave his cart of fireworks at the southern side of the plaza in front of the Cathedral. Aisha is wandering through the streets, turning heads... with a Charisma of 18, she's as useless as she is beautiful. VERY. She's the walking definition of a damsel in distress.

Yulious and Yvan meet Father Zantus to deliver their statues and he was relieved they managed to make it in time. Valora ends her shift and goes to hear the opening speeches with the others. Using the prep sheets from Trik motivates the characters to try and try and try again to win some of the prizes... at the end it nets them one cloak of resistance for Gunther and Yvan, as well as a bunch of Masterwork Arrows. During these contests... Yvan and Yulious notice Valora and Aisha standing by, watching as the others take their turn at the contests, and Yvan rashly approaches to ask their names.

"Hey strange girls, what are your names?"

"Strange!? What's that supposed to mean?" Valora gets triggered. Tells him it's none of his business and finds it incredibly creepy a hooded unknown guy randomly asking for their names.

Yulious apologizes for his brother's lack of tact and presents themselves. Valora gives her name but then grabs Aisha by the arm and says they have to go. Valora leaves and brings Aisha along to find Sherif Hemlock to tell him there are a couple of suspicious hooded fellows that she feels are trouble. Hemlock promises to keep an eye on the guys. Aisha and Valora present each other and decide to stick along... Valora is worried Aisha looks extremely feeble and innocent to she will try to keep her out of trouble with all the people around.

Even though Yulious broke his nose during one of the races, the rest of the Festival goes on smoothly. The party converges again during lunch, attracted by Ameiko's Salmon Curry. Valora saves Hannah a bowl and Hannah realizes Yulious broken nose. Valora reluctantly allows her mom to fix his nose... Hannah notices both of them are Aasimar. She is a little surprised at first as for this campaign, she was one of the midwifes attending Nualia when she miscarried. It's been 5 years since she saw any other divine blooded people. The brothers thank her for the help. Yulious wants to check for maps of the region as he's interested on what kind of treasure or hidden secrets can the Hinterlands offer to his brother and him... Sadly, the Way North is closed for the festivities.

They move to the consecration of the Cathedral. They wait for Father Zantus to start their speech- and hell breaks loose.

They don't even wait for me to call for perception rolls, they are rolling away trying to see what killed the dog. You don't kill a doggie in this table and live to tell the tale. They spot the goblins easily. The encounter takes a while... as most of them are rolling low. Yulious casts magic missile and Aisha uses Inflict Light Wounds... the goblin withers away because she's upset he killed the puppy. Everyone stares at her.

They finally end up dispatching the first 3 goblins, and Valora wants to go for her mount (a Cave Salamander... yeah) that is at The Gobling Squashed stables and to check on her mom. At that point, Gunther's fireworks explode and they are forced to deal with the Goblin Warchanter's group. Yvan and Valora roll natural twenties + confirmations like there is no tomorrow... and the goblins lay dead in a single round. I allow Valora to run to get her mount and check on her mom on the way back while the others are healing and try unsuccesfully to help the slashed doggie. Valora gets to see Daviren having a field day killing goblins. Aisha cries over the dog's body and Gunther swears he will make sure they regret this. As soon as she gets back, they hear Die, Dog! DIE!

Valora, Aisha and Gunther get on the mount, while Yvan and Yulious rush to the gate. There is another dog hurt? With a surprise round, Gunther crits the Goblin commando with max damage x4. The Goblin's head explodes before he even heard them coming. Valora charges with her reach weapon, crits, and makes a goblin kebab. Aisha drops herself from the mount over the dying dog and heals him. Yvan takes his greatsword and crit charges too. In the blink of an eye, everything is done. Aldern immediately praises Aisha as his and his dog saviour.

The rest of the goblins rush to flee and the party wants to give chase. Hemlock arrives and tells them to make sure the streets are safe instead, they are still trying to figure out exactly what happened. That door shouldn't be open.

Valora - "Wait, where are the guards of this door?"

Me - "...mmh?"

Aisha - "surely, there were guards here... right? Even closed, it wouldn't be left unguarded. ((OOC: Other wise it would be quite stupid on their part))"

Me - "... I guess?"

Yvan - "...Soooo?"

Me - "Some of the guards left their post to check on the festival?"

Yulious - "They must be hold accountable for their incompetence!"

The party was still a little unconvinced. They keep wanting to go out to follow the Goblins. They have a Ranger and also Valora's Cave Salamander has scent, after all. Hemlock tells them is going to be night soon... but they don't care because most of them have lowlight vision or darkvision. Hemlock insists there are more dangerous things out there when darkness falls and Valora remembers the tales of the Sandpoint Devil that her "Aunt Shalelu" tells her to keep her from wandering too far away from the town. She ends up disuading the others. Ameiko arrives to inquire with Hemlock what the hell was all that, and offers the others free lodging. They gladly accept and Yvan even tries to flirt with her... horribly. Valora glares at him and motions an "I'm watching you" warning sign. Aldern gifts the dog to Aisha and promises to repay everyone for saving his life after things calm down.

Take away:

I underestimated my group's will to follow through total goblin genocide because the goblins killed a dog. Even if they were somewhat wounded they where completely on board of tracking the goblins back to their lair and reenact John Wick. This is a very proactive group... They are used to follow through any leads right away... so I'm sure they will try to track them back in the morning but I'll have them find a straggler group of Goblins instead... and after the crypt scene I'll make it rain. I fear that if they start asking around (specially when Shalelu explains the tribes), they will push forward to Nettlewood or Mosswood for guerrilla tactics against them.

I'll have Daviren offering the party the bounty on Goblins ears the very next morning.

Other than that, the session extended way longer than I had anticipated because of all the roleplay they did during the festival contests. I was taken by surprise when they asked me who was guarding the north gate and I didn't remember anything related to that particular plot point other that Lonjiku left it open (which they obviously don't know yet). Any ideas I can use?
