I recently projected a reel of trashy grindhouse trailers that included a tv spot for the Twilight People. Now I had never seen the film and needed to rectify that plus I wanted to see what this Filipino flying Bat Man was all about. The Twilight People stars producer John Ashley in a low budget mashup of the Island of Doctor Moreau and the Most Dangerous Game. The doctor character is played by Charles Macaulay assisted by the stunning Pat Woodell who incidentally shows up in several of the other trailers and tv spots on that reel I screened. The doctor has a bevy of mutant animal human hybrid freaks that he is creating to survive the world that he believes is becoming to harsh for mere humans to exist in. The hybrid humans consist of the bat man who flys around on wires that piqued my interest in the trailer, a Pan like horned antipope man, an ape man, wolf woman, and lastly a severely underutilized Pam Grier as the Panther woman, Rawr! She also thankfully shows up a few times in my trailer reel. The highlight of the film is the manic performance by Jan Merlin as the doctor’s heavy. He’s a special kind of crazy who likes to pass the time drinking warm milk as he lustfully eyes his wall of guns. He’s just itching for John Ashley to attempt to escape so he can hunt him down and kill him, or f*ck him. It’s not exactly clear which. All of this is set to a music track that I really dug and kept making me think this would work well sampled by LTJ Bukem with a drum loop. So pour yourself a tall glass of warm milk and enjoy the Twilight People.
