Doris … April 12, 1939. Doris sang with Barney Rapp’s band at his nightclub Sign Of The Drum.
Barney Rapp was a popular band leader and jazz musician for nearly three decades. He is best known for discovering Doris Day and launching the career of Rosemary Clooney.
Barney Rappaport was born in Connecticut on March 25th, 1900. When he was 20-years-old he organized a Jazz orchestra that was styled for dance music. He named it "Barney Rapp and His New Englanders." In a unique move, Barney, unlike most orchestra leaders of his day, played the band's drums. The New Englanders gained a popular following on the East Coast. Barney eventually moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and then to Cincinnati. Once there, his band became a regional attraction, routinely getting their music played on the radio. The band eventually recorded several albums on RCA Victor and Bluebird. Among their early recordings is an MGM film short featuring the band.
The band toured the country in the 1930s and 1940s. Barney needed a vocalist and hired singer Ruby Wright. She became the featured singer with Barney’s band. The professional relationship between Barney and Ruby eventually turned personal and the two were married in 1937. The couple bought a nightclub in the Cincinnati area and named it the ‘The Sign of the Drum.’ Of course, Barney, Ruby, and the New Englanders often performed there.
Barney launched the careers of many artists who went on to achieve great fame: His most famous discovery was 14-year-old Doris Kappelhoff. Barney asked her name, and upon hearing it said: "It’s a very nice name but a little too long for the marquee outside." He suggested the name Doris Day after hearing her sing "Day After Day.” Doris replaced Barney’s wife Ruby as the band’s featured singer when Ruby became pregnant in 1939 • After hearing the teenage Clooney Sisters, Rosemary and Betty, sing on the radio in Cincinnati, Barney recommended the girls to bandleader Tony Pastor • Others who got their start with Rapp include actor Eddie Ryan and singer Barry Wood, who is best known for being Frank Sinatra's immediate predecessor as the lead male vocalist on ‘Your Hit Parade.’ Wood also performed with musician Buddy Rogers.
In the fall of 1956, Barney and Ruby started the ‘Reds' Rooters Fan Club.’ Waite Hoyt, Hall of Fame pitcher and Cincinnati Reds Radio Broadcaster, urged his friend Barney Rapp to promote a fan trip to Milwaukee to help root the Reds on to victory. Over 700 people traveled by train to cheer on their team. This was the beginning of the Red Rooters’ Club. Under the leadership of Barney, the Red Rooters’ Club took fans all over the world including every National League city, several American League cities, Japan, and Europe. Over 100,000 Rooters have traveled to root for the Reds.
Barney Rapp died on October 12th, 1970, at the age of 70. He is interred in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Sixteen Spanish nuns have announced they are breaking from the Catholic Church and instead placing themselves under the authority of Pablo de Rojas Sánchez-Franco, a self-styled bishop who was excommunicated in 2019.
The 16 Poor Clare sisters, part of the Franciscan Order of Saint Clare, were based in the dioceses of Burgos and Vitoria in northern Spain.
The schism comes against the backdrop of conservative anger over the leadership of Pope Francis. In February, 90 Catholic clergymen and scholars wrote a letter to "all Cardinals and Bishops of the Catholic Church," urging them to oppose a document approved by the pontiff that allowed priests to bless same-sex couples. Earlier this month, Francis angered many American conservatives by describing efforts to prevent migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexican border as "madness."
The 16 nuns, led by Sister Isabel of the Trinity, announced their break from Catholic authorities in a five-page open letter published on their convent's website.
In the letter, Sister Isabel said Catholics have had to endure "the silence of our pastors," who "left their sheep alone and helpless to face the wolves."
Referring to the papacy, she added: "From the Throne of Peter we have been receiving contradiction, confusion and doublespeak, ambiguity, lack of clear doctrine, which is all the more necessary in stormy times, to hold the rudder more firmly.
"During this time the sisters, each in her own style, way and rhythm, have been contemplating a question, a doubt about the one who steers the Barque of Peter, and his closest collaborators. A doubt which, in time, became SCANDAL."
Newsweek has contacted the press office of the Holy See for comment by email.
Sister Isabel also said the Vatican prevented the community from selling an empty monastery in Derio, the proceeds of which were intended to pay for a new monastery in Orduña. She said the decision was a bid to control "traditionally minded communities and keep their real estate to sell."
The sister said the group would instead put itself under the authority of Sánchez-Franco, whom she styled a "legitimate bishop of the Holy Catholic Church" despite his excommunication by the Vatican.
She added: "They are going to call us heretics and schismatics, crazy, and many more very disagreeable and calumnious things, but don't believe them; at least this once, don't let them fool you."
In an attached 70-page document titled "Catholic Manifesto," the group said it recognized "H.H. Pius XII as the last valid Supreme Pontiff," adding that "the see of St. Peter is vacant and usurped."
In a broadcast on Spanish radio station COPE, Archbishop Mario Iceta of Burgos, under whose jurisdiction the 16 nuns fell, said when he first heard they were leaving, he "thought it was fake news," the Catholic News Agency reported.
He said the schism "seems absolutely wrong," adding that the church must see "if it is possible to heal it, cure it, reverse it" through dialogue with the nuns.
According to the Catholic News Agency, the archbishop added: "I don't know if they realize the profound consequences that this step has and that is why my option or my opinion is that this should not be done precipitously, let this media tidal wave pass, let's see if it's possible to establish a relationship with them and dialogue and look at these issues and give them time to reconsider this situation that seems so surprising and strange to me."

ok i couldn't resist i had to read the Jinger NYT article immediately:
(CW: sexual assault and r*pe mention)
they almost exclusively refer to Jinger as Mrs. Vuolo which for some reason makes me feel feral. it's just clunky and I don't like it.
the Jill Dillard erasure!!!!!! another article claiming Jinger is the 'first' to question her parent's religion when that is just 1000% not true and like, what kind of fact checkers would not investigate if any of her siblings were up to something similar?
and on that note, why won't Jinger herself acknowledge Jill???? purely to sell more books as the 'first' to break away, bc that's pretty irritating
i learned from this article that Bill Gothard never married which is just fucking hilarious to me. all these rules about how to live as a married couple and this bitch really had no experience or idea what he was talking about (another example of how men really do just be saying any old thing and getting away with it)
Jinger makes a point to the interviewer that the reason she is trying to avoid the term 'deconstruction' is because she doesn't want to scare off readers who might currently be involved with IBLP or similar structures, to which I say, fair. she says that of all the people who'd possibly read the book those people are her intended audience (although I'm sure she's not mad at being an NYT bestseller right now).
the interviewer notes that the book is very generous to Jim Bob in Michelle, which I know I've talked about a lot before, just noting it again.
apparently she talks about Josh a bit, says they haven't spoken in 2 years, calls him a hypocrite and compares him to Gothard so. at least there's some kind of shit talking.
Bill Gothard is still alive and has started a new organization, apparently. Jinger adds in the book that she believes the women who have accused him of harassment and r*pe.
here's what they include about MacArthur's church, which I think is important for people to know:
"Mrs. Vuolo characterizes her current church in Southern California as very different than the environment she was raised in. The church, Grace Community Church, is led by John MacArthur, a popular pastor known for his rigorous preaching style, his opposition to “superstitious” charismatic theology and, more recently, his resistance to keeping his church closed in the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic.
The church is conservative on issues like homosexuality, gender, and women in church leadership. Christianity Today reported this week that leaders at the church repeatedly advised women to avoid reporting their abusive husbands and fathers to authorities, and instead to forgive and submit to them. ..... The church plays a large role in Mrs. Vuolo’s family’s life. Her husband leads a Bible study group for college students and is employed by a seminary affiliated with the church, the Master’s Seminary, where he is working on a doctorate of ministry. “Becoming Free Indeed” credits a ghostwriter named Corey Williams who is the seminary’s chief communication officer. “This is what people won’t like about this story,” said Austin Duncan, director of the seminary’s MacArthur Center for Expository Preaching, who knows the Vuolos well. “They still have a standard of authority that’s outside of themselves.”"
To which I just have to say, nobody's issue with Jinger's religious affiliation is that she still "has a standard of authority outside" herself 🙄🙄🙄 or at least not people who are coming at the story in good faith.
The issue is listed clearly in the paragraph above that one: it's a church that still promotes misogyny and homophobia, and is anti-science and intellectualism. As did Bill Gothard, he just added a bunch of stupid extra rules on top of it.

World building and theories of Engage
Attitudes towards Solm.
‘Solm is an open minded country. They have always had good relations with Firene.’
That is how Alfred in Chapter 4 : A Land in Bloom, introduces Solm to Alear. The introduction is friendly and paints a positive picture of the queendom. It is mentioned that Queen Eve had no problem agreeing to sign a nonaggression pact with them which continues the friendly picture.
Céline is a little more cautious when she considers Solm. When Fogado invites her for tea in their support conversations
Fogado: ‘Being royals of Solm and Firene, I think it’s important we get to know each other. Talk about different values and whatnot. Could be beneficial for both of us.’
Céline: ‘Haha, spoken like the prince of a nation obsessed with trade.’
Fogado: ‘Nothing wrong with a little give and take.’
Céline: Forgive me, but I must decline for now. The Firenese lifestyle is more pastoral. We lack your taste for intrigue and risk.’
Fogado: ‘You make tea with me sound like some kind of big adventure.’
Céline: ‘Quite a dangerous one, yes. Good day, Prince Fogado.’'s
Céline's role as a princess and protector of Firene requires a certain amount of suspicion and caution. Two royals from different countries engaging in tea is not as simple as tea with friends. There are risks of secrets being leaked and offence being caused. Her attitude towards Fogado's invitation is not surprising considering these facts. In her mind Solm is a trading nation that keeps secrets and can engage in unconventional and risky political and diplomatic activity. She is also aware that Fogado uses his charisma to gather intelligence.
‘Such as the way you curry favour with foreign nobility to pry information out of them.’
Her view of Solm is as a nation engaging in secretive and risky activity and any engagement comes with hidden motives. I
Hortensia is equally as suspicious of Fogado's motives.
‘Act innocent if you want, but even in Elusia, we’ve heard what a flirt you are.’
She accuses Fogado of being a flirt and is surprised to learn that he is actually helping people and not just socialising for the sake of it.
There is a theme of ignorance about Solm's environment and culture. This is evidence through the various support conversations the Solm characters have with characters outside their kingdom.
Vander is surprised by the singing, howling and dancing at a religious gathering he attends with Pandreo
Framme selects an outfit for Timerra made of heavy fabric which does not suit the heat of Solm and limits movements which is important for her ability to fight at a moment's notice.
Boucheron teaches Panetta the etiquette of Firene and is surprised to learn that there are no etiquette requirements for nobles in Solm.
Alcryst is invited to parties by Pandreo. At first he fails to enjoy them because he is trying to apply British convention to them. He is surprised to learn that there are no rules or structure to a Solm party.
Anna asks Timerra what would sell well in Solm.
Diamant tried Timerra's style of leadership, intrigued by her concept of being able to protect her people if she knows them.
This ignorance is demonstrated in the main story as well. Alear and the royals of other nations are shocked by the casual nature of Solm's royalty. In Chapter 13: The Sentinels, Alear and the royals are surprised and stunned as Fogado shouts for his mother in a very normal, casual way. There are no airs or graces, not even when Sefonia and Fogado mention the potential location of their powerful and precious Emblem ring; ‘the doodad drawer'.

feeling torn and conflicted because Matt Chandler (lead pastor of The Village Church) is one of the only pastors whose speaking style is able to keep me engaged all the way through a sermon, but as I look into the policies and belief systems of the church, I realize that they are non-affirming towards the LGBTQ+ community and don’t allow women to hold leadership roles. so now I feel almost guilty supporting them.
I think there has to be some middle ground where I can agree to enjoy and appreciate certain sermons but disagree and reject bad theology, but I’m not quite there. my anger and hurt at the church is at the forefront of my mind right now. there’s a small, distrustful part of me that thinks “if they’re wrong about the queer community and about women in leadership, what else are they wrong about theologically?” and while that’s something I can find the answer to myself through research and with time, it bothers me that I feel the need to be mistrustful of almost every church now.

The Benefits of Getting a Master's Degree in Divinity
Pursuing a Master’s degree in Divinity is a transformative journey that goes beyond academic achievement; it’s a profound exploration of faith, leadership, and service. As society becomes increasingly complex, the need for well-educated, compassionate leaders in faith communities is paramount. A Master's degree in Divinity not only deepens theological understanding but also equips individuals with practical skills essential for effective ministry. Institutions like Okanagan Bible College offer robust programs that prepare students for this vital role, fostering growth in both personal and professional dimensions.
Tumblr media
1. Deepening Theological Understanding
One of the primary benefits of obtaining a Master’s degree in Divinity is the opportunity to engage deeply with theological concepts. Students explore biblical texts, church history, and doctrine, gaining a comprehensive understanding of their faith tradition. This foundational knowledge is essential for anyone seeking to lead a congregation, as it enables them to interpret scripture accurately and communicate its relevance to contemporary issues.
Courses are designed to challenge students’ thinking and encourage critical reflection on theological matters. This deep engagement helps future leaders articulate their faith more effectively and engage in meaningful discussions with diverse audiences.
2. Developing Practical Ministry Skills
A Master’s degree in Divinity goes beyond theory; it emphasizes the development of practical ministry skills. Programs typically include coursework in areas such as pastoral care, preaching, counseling, and community engagement. These skills are crucial for effectively serving in a church or faith-based organization.
Many institutions incorporate practical experiences, allowing students to apply their learning in real-world ministry settings. Through internships and hands-on projects, students develop the confidence and competence necessary to lead their congregations and make a positive impact in their communities.
3. Preparing for Leadership Roles
Leadership in faith communities requires more than just theological knowledge; it demands strong leadership qualities, including vision, integrity, and the ability to inspire others. A Master’s degree in Divinity cultivates these attributes by providing students with opportunities to practice leadership in various contexts.
Programs often include training on different leadership styles and how to foster collaboration within congregations. This prepares graduates to lead with confidence and authenticity.
4. Enhancing Communication Skills
Effective communication is a cornerstone of successful ministry. Whether preaching a sermon, leading a Bible study, or engaging in community outreach, the ability to convey messages clearly and compellingly is essential. A Master’s degree in Divinity provides extensive opportunities for students to hone their communication skills.
Through coursework that emphasizes writing, public speaking, and interpersonal communication, students learn to articulate their thoughts and beliefs effectively. This skill set is invaluable not only in ministry but also in any professional context where clear communication is crucial.
5. Cultivating Spiritual and Personal Growth
The journey toward a Master’s degree in Divinity is as much about personal and spiritual development as it is about academic achievement. Students engage in self-reflection, exploring their beliefs, values, and calling. This introspective process fosters a deeper understanding of oneself and one’s relationship with God.
Institutions that prioritize spiritual formation as part of their educational experience encourage students to cultivate their spiritual lives through prayer, worship, and community engagement. This leads to a more profound sense of vocation and purpose.
6. Building a Supportive Community
Another significant benefit of pursuing a Master’s degree in Divinity is the opportunity to build a network of supportive relationships. Graduate programs often bring together individuals with similar passions and goals, creating a community of learners who can encourage one another throughout their journeys.
Students often find a nurturing environment where they can collaborate, share experiences, and support one another in their academic and spiritual pursuits. The connections made during this time often lead to lasting friendships and professional networks that extend well beyond graduation.
7. Preparing for Diverse Ministry Contexts
Tumblr media
The church exists within a myriad of cultural contexts, and leaders must be equipped to serve effectively in diverse environments. A Master’s degree in Divinity prepares students to engage with different cultures and understand the unique needs of various communities.
Many programs emphasize cross-cultural competence in their curriculum, encouraging students to appreciate and learn from diverse perspectives. This training prepares future leaders to address the challenges and opportunities that come with ministering in a globalized world.
8. Exploring Career Opportunities
A Master’s degree in Divinity opens doors to various career paths within the church and beyond. Graduates may pursue roles such as pastors, chaplains, educators, or nonprofit leaders. The degree also provides a strong foundation for further academic study, including doctoral programs in theology or ministry.
Institutions often provide guidance on career planning and vocational discernment, helping students explore the numerous possibilities that await them after graduation. This support is invaluable as students navigate their paths forward.
9. Commitment to Lifelong Learning
The pursuit of a Master’s degree in Divinity instills a commitment to lifelong learning. Theological studies encourage critical thinking and an openness to new ideas, fostering a mindset that values continuous growth.
Students are encouraged to remain curious and engaged with theological developments and societal issues, promoting a lifelong journey of faith and learning that extends beyond the classroom.

What to Expect on a School Open Day in the UK
Choosing the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions you’ll make as a parent. Independent school open days in the UK are an excellent opportunity to explore prospective schools firsthand and gain valuable insight into their culture, curriculum, facilities, and values. Attending an open day can help you determine if a particular school aligns with your child’s academic and personal development needs. Here’s what you can expect from a typical school open day in the UK and how to make the most of your visit.
Tumblr media
1. Welcome Presentation by the Headteacher
Most school open days start with a welcome presentation by the headteacher or principal. During this session, the school leadership outlines the school’s ethos, academic philosophy, achievements, and future plans. You will also learn about the school’s pastoral care, the support offered to students, and its approach to personal development. This presentation sets the tone for the rest of the day and offers an overarching view of the school’s values and goals.
2. Guided Tours of the Campus
Guided tours are a central feature of school open days. You will have the chance to explore the school’s facilities, including classrooms, science labs, sports halls, libraries, arts centres, and outdoor areas. Often led by current students, these tours offer insight into the school’s everyday operations and provide an opportunity to see the school in action. Tours give you a feel for the learning environment, class sizes, and the quality of the infrastructure and resources available.
3. Classroom Visits and Lesson Observations
Some schools allow parents and prospective students to visit classrooms while lessons are in progress. Observing a class can give you a sense of the teaching style, student engagement, and the classroom atmosphere. It’s also a great opportunity to see how teachers interact with students and how effectively they manage different learning styles and needs.
4. Meet and Greet with Teachers and Staff
Tumblr media
5. Interaction with Current Students
Engaging with current students can be one of the most revealing aspects of a school open day. Students often guide the tours and are available to answer questions about their experiences. You can ask about their academic workload, extracurricular activities, school culture, and what they enjoy most about attending the school. Hearing directly from students offers an authentic view of what life is like at the school and how it caters to student needs.
6. Extracurricular Activities and Clubs Display
Many schools use open days to showcase their extracurricular programs. You might witness performances from drama or music clubs, exhibitions of art, or sports demonstrations. These displays highlight the non-academic offerings that are crucial to a well-rounded education. Schools often emphasize extracurricular activities as essential for developing leadership, teamwork, creativity, and other personal skills. This also gives you insight into the diversity and quality of opportunities outside of the standard academic curriculum.
7. Pastoral Care and Support Systems
Pastoral care is an important part of a child’s school life, and most schools will present information about the support systems they have in place for students’ well-being. Open days provide the opportunity to learn more about the school’s approach to emotional, mental, and social support. You might hear about mentoring programs, counselling services, or initiatives designed to nurture students’ personal growth and resilience.
8. Q&A Sessions
Many schools incorporate formal or informal question-and-answer (Q&A) sessions into the open day schedule. This is your chance to ask any specific questions about the admissions process, entrance exams, scholarship opportunities, special education support, or academic expectations. It’s a good idea to prepare some questions in advance to make sure you cover all the areas that are most important to you and your child.
9. Information on Admissions and Scholarships
School open days are also an opportunity to learn about the admissions process. Staff members will explain how to apply, any entrance exam requirements, interview procedures, and deadlines. Many schools, particularly independent schools, will also provide information about available scholarships and bursaries, which can be invaluable for families considering private education.
10. School Atmosphere and Culture
Finally, perhaps the most important aspect of attending an open day is getting a feel for the school’s overall atmosphere and culture. Pay attention to the mood of the staff and students, the energy around the school, and how people interact with each other. Trust your instincts — if the school feels welcoming and supportive, and if the environment seems like a good fit for your child’s personality and needs, that’s a positive sign.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of a School Open Day:
Research beforehand: Look up the school online, review its curriculum, and familiarize yourself with its values and offerings. This will help you ask relevant questions.
Bring your child: If possible, take your child with you so they can form their own opinions and ask questions themselves.
Prepare questions: Consider what’s most important to you (e.g., academic support, extracurricular activities, pastoral care) and write down key questions.
Take notes: If you’re visiting multiple schools, take notes during each visit to help you compare later.
Reflect afterward: After the visit, take time to reflect on what you liked and didn’t like about the school. Involve your child in this discussion, too.
Conclusion
School open days 2024 in the UK offer an invaluable chance to explore potential schools in person and gain a deeper understanding of what they can offer your child. From tours of the facilities and meeting with teachers, to observing classes and engaging with current students, these events provide a comprehensive view of the school’s environment. By preparing in advance and knowing what to expect, you’ll be able to make an informed decision and choose the right school that aligns with your child’s needs and aspirations.

Islamic Schools in Manchester: Nurturing Faith and Excellence in Education
Tumblr media
Manchester, a vibrant city known for its rich history, diverse culture, and dynamic educational landscape, is home to a number of Islamic schools that play a pivotal role in shaping the minds and morals of young Muslims. These schools offer a blend of religious and secular education, ensuring that students are well-prepared to thrive in the modern world while remaining grounded in their Islamic faith. This blog explores the key aspects of Islamic schools in Manchester, their importance, and the impact they have on the community.
1. The Role of Islamic Schools in the Community
Islamic schools in Manchester serve as more than just educational institutions; they are central to the spiritual and cultural lives of the Muslim community. These schools provide a safe and nurturing environment where students can learn about their religion, heritage, and moral values, while also receiving a quality education that meets national standards. By offering a curriculum that integrates Islamic studies with conventional subjects, these schools ensure that students grow up with a strong sense of identity and purpose.
2. The Curriculum: Balancing Faith and Academics
One of the distinguishing features of Islamic schools in Manchester is their balanced curriculum. Students receive instruction in core subjects such as mathematics, science, English, and humanities, alongside Islamic studies, Quranic recitation, and Arabic language. This dual focus not only equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to excel academically but also instills a deep understanding of their faith and responsibilities as Muslims.
Islamic studies cover a wide range of topics, including theology, jurisprudence, and the life of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). These lessons are designed to foster a strong moral compass and encourage students to live by Islamic principles in their daily lives. The integration of religious and secular subjects ensures that students receive a holistic education that prepares them for both worldly success and spiritual fulfillment.
3. Holistic Development: Beyond Academics
Islamic schools in Manchester are committed to the holistic development of their students. This means nurturing not just their intellectual abilities, but also their emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. Many Islamic schools place a strong emphasis on character education, teaching students the importance of honesty, respect, compassion, and community service.
Extracurricular activities are also an essential part of the school experience. From sports and arts to debate clubs and charity projects, students are encouraged to explore their interests and develop a wide range of skills. These activities help students build confidence, teamwork, and leadership qualities, all within an Islamic framework.
4. Supporting Students with Diverse Needs
Manchester’s Islamic schools are committed to providing an inclusive education that meets the needs of all students. Many schools offer tailored support for students with special educational needs (SEN), ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed. This includes personalized learning plans, specialist teaching staff, and access to resources that cater to different learning styles.
In addition to academic support, Islamic schools often provide pastoral care and counseling services to help students navigate the challenges of adolescence. By addressing the social and emotional needs of students, these schools create a supportive and nurturing environment where every child can thrive.
5. Parental Involvement: A Key to Success
Parental involvement is a cornerstone of the success of Islamic schools in Manchester. Schools actively encourage parents to participate in their children’s education, whether through regular communication, parent-teacher meetings, or involvement in school activities. This partnership between parents and educators ensures that students receive consistent support both at home and in school.
Many Islamic schools also offer workshops and events for parents, covering topics such as parenting in the digital age, Islamic parenting principles, and how to support children’s learning at home. These initiatives help to strengthen the bond between home and school, creating a unified approach to education.
6. Challenges and Opportunities
Like any educational institution, Islamic schools in Manchester face their own set of challenges. Funding can be a significant issue, as many schools are independently run and rely on tuition fees and community donations to cover their costs. Additionally, there can be challenges related to integrating Islamic education with the national curriculum, ensuring that students meet all required academic standards while maintaining a strong focus on religious studies.
However, these challenges also present opportunities for growth and innovation. Many Islamic schools are exploring new ways to enhance their curriculum, incorporate technology into the classroom, and expand their facilities. The increasing demand for Islamic education in Manchester is also leading to the establishment of new schools and the expansion of existing ones, providing more options for families in the community.
7. Prominent Islamic Schools in Manchester
Manchester is home to several well-established Islamic schools that have earned a reputation for excellence. Among them are:
Manchester Islamic High School for Girls: Known for its strong academic performance and emphasis on Islamic values, this school provides a supportive environment where young Muslim women can excel.
Manchester Muslim Preparatory School: Catering to younger students, this school offers a nurturing environment where children receive a balanced education that includes both secular and Islamic studies.
Afifah School: A co-educational Islamic school that prides itself on its inclusive approach and commitment to academic excellence, Afifah School serves students from early years to secondary level.
These schools, among others, play a vital role in the educational landscape of Manchester, offering high-quality education that aligns with the values and beliefs of the Muslim community.

The Way Forward
How we got here.
It can take years or even decades to arrive someplace. It is also possible to find yourself somewhere quite unintentionally. If two ships were to leave Los Angeles and have slightly less than a one degree difference in their westerly route across the Pacific, it would seem they are sailing on a parallel track for a while. Slowly and almost imperceptibly the other ship will fade from view and by the time each ship finds land they would be hundreds of miles apart.
I think the C ot N finds ourselves in a far different place than we would have envisioned a few decades ago. The unraveling was underway decades ago. In a culture beset by real issues kids went to camp and swam in girls swim times and boys swim times. Hours were spent explaining why musical styles were evil, only to see those styles now regularly featured in our worship services. In short, our holiness message had become hopelessly intertwined with a stifling legalism that could not separate vital faith but meaningless side issues.
At the same time others increasingly saw value in taking the church down a road that looked a lot like the culture. If the greater culture wanted to recognize ever increasing ethnic and racial identities, and new-found sexual identities, then the church needs to go down that path as well. The Balkanization of the culture does not deter this quest, even as it seems strikingly at odds with the Galatian proclamation that “in Christ, there is neither Jew nor Gentile, slave nor free, male nor female.”
Last but not least we have also fallen victim to the political and cultural divides that are prevalent in these last decades. We have not only failed to love, we refuse to believe the best about each other, and find it very comforting to quickly assume the worst. The actions of a few become everyone. What we hear in passing about a D.S. or professor somewhere becomes evidence for what all of leadership or academia is doing. We do not even pause long enough to discover if it is true, or consider whether we heard a story shaded by personal bias.
So now we trust no one. Everyone else is a “them.” They do not see things like “we” do. We fail to see that the “we” group gets smaller and smaller all the time. There is a lack of trust and a lack of willingness to have a conversation. Are there issues – yes. Are there people who say things that should be addressed – yes. There always have been. This is not new. What is new is a lack of willingness to engage, really to love each other.
Present Situation
It is easy to say that as we start the second quarter of this century we do not know who we are. We have long since failed to understand our place in the Christian world. 50 years ago we were so uncomfortable with our culture it limited our effectiveness. Today, for the most part, we are so comfortable with our culture that it is limiting our effectiveness. In a desire to be relevant, we have lost our ability to see culture through a distinctly Christian lens.
In earlier times NTS served as the flagship of our denomination. It set the theological tone. For a number of reasons that world began to crumble. Some are cultural, some theological, and still others are economic, but today we live in a denomination where that is no longer the case. There is no flagship and greatly diminished denominational identity. Subscriptions and readership of our Holiness Today is down, so there is no voice at the center.
The majority of our pastors now receive their ministerial education through the COS. While I am thankful in some ways, it is a far less strenuous and reflective course. There is value in getting pushback and criticism in personal classrooms. Today one can go through the COS in SWID or in N California, and have distinctly different experiences. It is safe to say that most of the energy in our denomination is at the edges. On one side are those who have difficulty explaining how we are different than the Baptist church down the street, or are comfortable taking us to a fundamentalism that has never been us.
On the other side are those who want to take us in a way that looks little different from modern political concerns. Identity is found in ever smaller interest groups, and qualifications for leadership are primarily defined by melatonin levels, or what reproductive organs one has.  Gone are the days when the main qualification for men and women was the presence of the Spirit in their lives and ministry.
So we are left with drift. Not a denominational drift, but a drift of various factions of the church. There is no flagship – no central unifying force and no lamp to lead.
Theological Way Forward
In many ways we have forgotten who we are. In some minds we are little different than the evangelical, non-denominational church down the street. We have so entered that world that when we hear a thought that is different, we immediately defensively react.  This is the time to remember that we are Wesleyan. We believe that grace is poured out to every single person. We believe that we must go to everyone.
We also need to remember that in addition to being decidedly non-Calvinist, we are also not charismatic. Worship is not waving hands in the air during music, but how we live when no one is looking. And the best evidence of the Spirit is not emotion or fervency, but how straight we walk, and how much we love. We proclaim grace. We baptize infants. We honor gifts and graces for leadership to women. And over everything we proclaim holiness. Holiness is not a side issue or a second, but the full expression of what God does in a life. We must not get side-tracked by political issues. Politics is downstream of theology and culture. When we forgo our area to pursue certain political ends we actually reduce our effectiveness. We change hearts, not votes.
We once again need to present a full Biblical explanation and exposition of holiness. What is it? Why is it important? How is it achieved? Why is it important to us? All are vital questions, but secondary to the next political campaign.
Institutional Way Forward
Here is where get to the nitty-gritty, and is the part that will be most controversial. Yet if we are serious, we must think about it. Our current system was created for a world that no longer exists. We created educational institutions close enough to drive to in every part of the country. This is not the way people choose schools today. Quite simply, we have too many colleges.
We need to reduce our number from the present 7 down to 5, or even better – 4. Let’s be honest, 20 years from now we will have 4 or 5 colleges anyway, but with little to show for it. Let’s be intentional and think about this. This is the time to sell a few, and use the proceeds to endow the rest. Turn these colleges into places of material and financial strength.
I know the reasons that is tough. Our colleges are independent. However, with leadership this too is possible. With 4  colleges we can determine as a denomination what we want to be featured in our schools of Christian Ministry. We can also make a statement that the preferred route of Ministerial Prep is at our colleges, with in person learning.
Pastoral Way Forward
This is the last piece of the puzzle. If someone had done this 30 year ago, we would be ion a different position now. It is late, but there is time. We can take a slice of the proceeds previously mentioned and create an Endowment Fund for ministry preparation. We can put this vision forward and give people a chance to contribute. If we determine what we want to teach, and state our preference for preparation, when these people graduate and serve in our churches we can use the proceeds to lessen the impact of college loans. We can create a purposeful pathway for our best and brightest to serve.
I think it is highly doable to get to 10 million dollars. Then there will be nearly $500,000 every year available to help our pastors prepare and serve while easing their load financially. That amount would only increase year after year.

Chapter 1: Two pastors react to Tim Alberta's book "The Kingdom, the Pow...
COMMENTARY:
Calvinism is the core issue in the Evangelical rebellion, Hegel disdained Calvin because Martin Luther wasn't a Calvinist and the TULIP doctrine violates Free Will, Luther abandoned the Total Depravity Gospel of the Catholic Confession when he nailed his 95 Thesis to the door
I am an Army brat and I was raised in the Liberation Gospel of Jesus, George Washington and the Anglican tradition of the Army Protestant Chapel As an Anglican, George Washington eschewed the religious' "enthusiasm" of Cromwell and the Round Heads and the abiding spirit of his Mess at Valley Forge was Deist, Constructively, I am a Deist and went to Vietnam on the basis that my salvation was assured by the Cross and my role was to participate in the construction of the Kingdom of Heaven  by example and at the tips of my fingers with the servant-leadership ethic of Mission, Men, Self and submission to the Goddess of Duty, Yaweh, Queen of Battle, an element of ontology Cornelius shared with Jesus displayed in Matthew 8:5 - 13.
My first encounter with Toxic Calvinism was in 1966 with Bill Bright's business model for Christian Nationalism, Campus Crusade for Christ. My best friend in Theta Chi at Indiana University was a fan of Billy Graham and brought a Campus Crusade for Christ into the House for a Christian revival, I had no interest in their version of Jesus, but my friend kept after me to accept Jesus as my personal savior,
I was deeply offended. I was at IU to  earn an ROTC commission as part of my preparation for a military career as a Christian vocation, I have had a conscious relationship with the Holy Spirit since 1953 and fully submitted to Jesus and I thought my friend understood this, He didn't have c clue and he kept after me to decide for Christ. This was the first time I had an active and extended conversation with the Holy Spirit over a specific issue and he counseled me to go through the motions to please my friend, which I did, Forever after, he was credited with leading me to Christ and it soured our relationship, My friend eventually went on staff at Campus Crusade with his wife and avoided military service. Aside from the bogus theology, Campus Crusade for Christ was just another refuge from military service like Bill O'Reilly's draft shelter as a teacher.
Personally, I couldn't understand why any red-blooded America bot wouldn't want to go to Vietnam.
Among  other things, Campus Crusade for Christ promised spiritual ecstasy  that was sublime and superior to the sex, drugs and rock-and-roll of the liberal elements on campus, which the Jesus Freaks really emphasized, Sexual arousal remains an important factor in the social cohesion of the Pro-Life Fascism of the Evangelical movement which translates, politically, into the religious enthusiasm disdained by George Washington and me. Evangelical preachers misconstrue the exxual arousal in their services with the Holy Spirit, but it is, in fact, the Spirit of God unconstrained by the Holy Spirit that animates MAGA Christianity Trump's polls is reflecting the sex appeal of his WWE cage match campaign style that fits right into the sexual arousal of the Evangelical tent meeting,
