One fay while scrolling through Facebook, I happened upon a work in progress by Michael Simbajon of my favorite X-Men femme fatale, Spiral. You so rarely see her drawn, I immediately inquired if it was available. To my delight, it was both available, and it was affordable too. I immediately laid dibs. As Michael was finishing up Spiral, he asked his watchers if they'd be down for another character? A unanimous vote cried out to add Longshot. This was fine by me as he's one of my favorite heroes. Michael contacted me a little later with the jealous boyfriend idea. I thought it was a great play. And now this cover has finally made it to its new home. Was watching Tony Kent a week ago on Whatnot draw a killer Red Sonja. He was feeling like keeping the fantasy character coming, so when his faithful companion, Shelley, started scrolling through blank covers for ideas. As she was flipping through, I saw this Hanna Barbera Future Quest cover. And when I was a kid, my favorite HB cartoon was Thundarr the Barbarian. And the idea popped in my brain in a second. Fantasy female + Hanna Barbers = Princess Ariel So I asked Tony if he knew the cartoon and character. And sure enough, he did. #mailcallmonday I received two kick ass packages as I walked through the door today. One from the excellent folks over at Clan McDonald Comics and one from eBay. On Superbowl Sunday, CMC had a sale of slabbs, and if you picked the winner of the game before kick off, you got an extra discount. I chose correctly and got a great deal on these two covers. First off, Notti & Nyce Cosplay Gallery Vol. 2 Fatally Flawless Mortal Kombat Scorpion chase variant signed by Mike DeBalfo. You could only get this cover if you bought the 10 cover packs, and even then, there was only a chance of getting it as there were only 100 made. I never thought I'd afford this book, and now 37/100 is mine graded 9.6 by CBCS. Don't ever let FOMO get you. With patience and time, most comics become affordable. The next thing I got from CMC was a CBCS 9.6 grade copy of the Wildstorm 30th Anniversary Special. I love Grifter & Zealot. I love the WildC.A.T.s. With a Jim Lee cover sporting these two and CMC prices, it was too good to pass up. About the same time I got these two books from CMC, I got an offer I couldn't refuse on eBay. A seller offered me a CGC 9.8 grade copy of the first issue of Katana, the David Finch sketch variant for a bill. I immediately said yes! I've been wanting this book for a bit, and other sellers are asking crazy prices. Again, patience and time win the day. The latest edition to my Slave/Huttslayer Leia collection. This time I commissioned the amazing Nanci Vasconcellos. After seeing her hand painted covers, I knew I wanted one for my collection. She painted a version of one of my favorite characters Spiral in a version as Red Sonja that was truly amazing. If you name a character she's probably painted her. Yet another book totally worth the wait. SR International Comics had a commission event with Aldrin 'BUZZ' Aw a while back. BUZZ is a tremendous artist so I had to take in this opportunity. But COVID and real life gets in the way of even the best laid plans. Last December I finally got to see how my commission had come out. I immediately loved it and had Steven Rose send it off to CGC for grading. After a few months with CGC down in Florida, the book is finally home. Got another incredible cover from the incredible Tony Kent today. Tony's had a little difficulty with Whatnot because of Canada Post, so I hit him up directly for a commission. He let me know some ofvthe new covers he got in, and when he told he had a Princess Leia cover I knew I had to get a new Hutt Slayer Leia for my collection. The cover arrived today and I love it! I let Tony have free reign on the cover, and I'm blown away how it turned out. My ill gotten goods from Baltimore Comic Con! I was able to get some excellent commissions this and a few bad ass prints. First up from Gus Mauk I was able to get on his pre-con list so when I got there Saturday I had this fabulous Slave Leia to add to my collection. But I had to pick up the battle worn Logan! It immediately reminded me of that scene from the movie. After that I was able to get on a few commission lists to be shipped to me later, but woke up to one of them being completed overnight. CB Zane hit me up to show me his Slave Leia was complete. That's a wake up ladies & gentlemen! Now I'm hoping to hear from Steve Lydic about Shipwreck on G.I. Joe cove and David Hindelang about a Spider-man 2099 vs Batman Beyond cover. Also hoping to hear from Daxiong about a Slave Leia/Dragon commission. On the print side of the house I grabbed Conan & War Angels from the incredible Jason Metcalf, and ordered a killer Dragon of Sin print from Sammy Castillo. Have to give an honorable mention to Jordan P Jackson. I wanted to grab his Samurai Kida print, but lost track of time and money. May have to order it from him if possible. But the absolute best part was meeting a long time friend in person. Mister American Ninja himself, Charlie McElvy. Charlie and I have supported each other's creative work online for years. It was awesome to mert him at the show. This man is living one of my dreams. Published Comic Author. I recently commissioned Hugo Pelcastre to draw an homage to Ryan Stegman's Spider-man Renew Your Vows 1:25 variant cover. And he knocked it out of the park! I loved the theme of Stegman's cover ever since I first saw it. But as a Ben Reilly fan I've wanted to get this variant drawn as soon as I saw the original. Never understood why Marvel didn't bring these two characters together? Just like Nadia needed her geek, Black Cat needs her Spider. Ordered some killer books from New Kadia Comics including a NM copy of highly underrated Nightwing #117. Everyone looks at Birds of Prey #8 as a Key book, because of Nightwing and Oracle's first kiss. But no one seems to bat an eyelash at that time Dick asked Barbara to marry him, and she accepted! Written by Devin Grayson (she is still the best Nightwing writer IMHO), this story happens directly before the Infinite Crisis storyline, and sadly wasn't followed up on. But with the recent return of Dick Grayson's memories, the engagement was counted as cannon among them. The copy I got today is pristine and I plan on getting it graded bt CGC to match my BOP8. Got a #mailcall from the fine folks over at Clan McDonald Comics when I got home this afternoon. A little while back they had several commission opportunities all at once. Taking advantage of it I had a cover piece commissioned by one of my favorite artists, Mike DeBalfo. I was then able to get that artwork colored by one of the colorists, Ula Mos! So last year Mike, and several other artists, drew a tribute set to Mortal Kombat on a series of Notti & Nyce covers. By far the best of the set was the Scorpion homage drawn by Mr DeBalfo. However it was the chase cover to the entire set and I was never able to get a copy for my own collection. It has become very hard to find. So when CMC opened up DeBalfo commissions I knew what I was getting, but deciding on which cover became the question. I settled on the Hell Arisen cover because I found the title fitting. I want to thank Steven McDonald and Clan McDonald Comics for another amazing cover opportunity. Mr. DeBalfo, thank you for the amazing piece. Ms. Mos, your colors bring it to life! I have some great friends! When I got home this evening I found a little package on my doorstep. On top of an already fantastic day with my family at Sesame Place, this was the cherry on the top. Inside was a new Funko Pop from Epic Collectibles of one of my all-time favorite Superheroes. Longshot! My good friend, Travis, got me this just because he knew it was one of my favorites. Which in its own way is very fitting. Longshot's power works based on Altruism. For his luck to work, he just needs to do something because it's the good or correct thing to do. Back in the beginning of February my father passed away. At the same time we were just getting over COVID. What was probably the worst week in my life, I had one of the most awesome things to happen ever. I got to have dinner with Ben Percy. Mr. Percy was coming to Annapolis, MD for a signing event of his new comic The X Lives/Deaths of Wolverine during the first weekend in February at my local comic store Third Eye Comics. Utilizing their rewards program I was able to have dinner with one of my favorite writers in the comic industry the night before the signing. Ben Percy has written for two of my favorite heroes; Nightwing and Wolverine. But I gotta tell you he was cool and down to earth at yhe same time. We talked about writing, about comics, and just had a great time. We were having such a great time no one thought to grab any pictures. My only regret of the night. Just before he had to go I asked him to sign a bunch of books for me. Mostly some variant covers of his new book andsome Year Zero. But one thing I did have was Teen Titans 12, the first appearance of the Bat Who Laughs. At Awesome Con this year I sent it off to CBCS for signature verification and grading. The book returned just as I was heading down for my Mom & Dad's Celebration of Life. That moment is now safe, and holds a very important place in my life and my collection. I was only able to get one commission this year at Awesome Con, so I wanted damn sure to make it a good one. When I saw Mike Hawthorne's work on two of my favorite characters, I knew I found my artist. Mike said he loved both characters so I asked who he'd rather draw. I found out a long time ago to trust the artist and if they like what they're doing it comes back even better. When I asked him for Weapon X, he was totally on board! I was only at the convention one day this year, so I got the finished cover sent out to me a few weeks later. And damn was it worth it!
