La Hougue Bie One of the ten oldest buildings in the world. Underneath the daffodil covered mound is a passage grave. There’s now a chapel on the top but there used to be a tower (built by a prince, which is why this can be found on Princes Tower Road) and then when that fell into disrepair it became a hotel for a time. Now it belongs to Jersey Heritage and is well worth a visit. . . . . . #jerseyci #jersey #jerseychannelislands #jerseyheritage #lahouguebie #daffodils #historyallaroundus #passagegrave #chapel #ancientmound #spring #february #exploring #lovewhereyoulive #visitjersey #visitjerseyci #theislandbreak (at La Hougue Bie) https://www.instagram.com/p/CL10X0cDBaR/?igshid=idgef2noa3y7

bryn cello ddu. petrified monolith? an unusual feature of the chamber, is a large free-standing pillar, not tall enough to have supported the roof, cylindrical in shape, and with a rounded top. the markings on the surface strikingly similar to the bark of a tree and have recently led researchers to believe that this was a petrified tree trunk. this would have meant that it was transported specially to the site there are no deposits on the island or nearby mainland that would generate plant fossils of this type. the stone in fact has been identified as blueschist, a metamorphic rock, formed at high temperature and pressure deep under the earth's surface. petrified wood in contrast, is formed when the original wood material is buried under sediment or volcanic ash and is slowly replaced by silicates. whatever the final outcome of this debate it has clearly been chosen by the tombs builders for its unique appearances for symbolic value. #bryncelliddu #chamberedtomb #passagegrave #themoundinthedarkgrove #stonecircle #rockart #petrifiedwood #symbolic #metamorphicrock #monolith #megalith #angleseyrocks #wales https://instagr.am/p/B_kINdmHwyU/

the mound in the dark grove. anglesey wales bryn celli ddu may be translated as ‘the mound in the dark grove’, and some have speculated that during its time of construction, it was located in a large clearing then surrounded entirely forest. archaeologists have suggested that the original stone circles were set up during the neolithic period, around 3000 bc. around a thousand years after it was built, it became an ‘entrance grave’ or passage tomb, a type of burial monument found around the irish seaboard. bryn celli ddu was accurately aligned to coincide with the rising sun on the summer solstices with the rays of light penetrating down the passage way into the burial chamber. this connects if firmly in the tradition of the irish passage graves notably new grange with its ‘letterbox’ opening projecting light onto the rear wall of its chamber. _____ green ‘entrance’ door, with its padlock and letterbox. columbia road east london. #bryncelliddu #passagegrave #passagetomb #entrancegrave #neolithic #stonecircle #solstice #letterbox #newgrange #irish #welsh #anglesea #megalithic #megalithicarchitecture #mound #ritual #standingstone https://instagr.am/p/B_c9SiIHOzc/
