I have a headcanon that in between seasons 2 and 3, Tommy H. and Billy cornered Eddie in the bathroom and literally drowned him in a toilet. Steve entered the bathroom just in time to see Eddie stop thrashing, and he pulled him out and gave him CPR.

Tommy ran off, terrified he’d killed someone, but Billy stared with an unsettling grin on his face until Steve screamed at him to get out when Eddie started coughing up water.

Munson isn’t one of Max’s friends, but Harrington certainly is, and Billy remembers what Max said, remembers the needle in his neck and the helplessness when she slammed that damn bat down between his legs. So he spits on the tile beneath him and leaves Harrington with a smirk.

‘Believe it or not,’ Eddie coughs out, ‘I’m not on the best terms with the chief, man. Not surprised you don’t remember I got busted at one of your stupid parties. It’s their word against mine. Steve had apologized to him for the sawdust he’d had to spread out when Steve had come back to school with the nausea of a concussion. He had been nice, and showed a certain pride in his job. He hopes Mr. Pasco had cleaned these toilets thoroughly.

‘Your word and mine.’ He says quietly. He doesn’t know why he’s being quiet.

Eddie scoffs. Coughs twice.

‘You’re gonna go to court for me? King Steve?’ He flops the back of his hand against his forehead, nearly taking Steve out in the process, ‘What WILL the neighbors think?!’ He sags in Steve’s arms. Steve holds him tighter. Eddie coughs a little more.

‘They’ll think that Billy’s a homicidal asshole and that Tommy will go along with anybody who’s popular enough to make up for his dogshit personality.’

Eddie breathes in sharply, then leans down to cough over the bend in Steve’s elbow. Steve rubs circles into the patch on the back of his denim vest.

Childhood and Cultural Heritage-Quotes:

The cultural heritage of children and childhood is complex and varied, incorporating material objects such as toys, intangible heritage such as songs and games and the spatial heritage of the buildings, environments and landscapes that children inhabit.pg.2

Museum representations of childhood have often implied that children’s heritage is less serious and less important than that of adults. pg.209

The nineteenth and twentieth centuries emphasised this trend, with childhood memories featuring as a major theme in Victorian literature and in the emergence of psycho-analysis and psychology (Fass 2010). pg. 210

This strong cultural and individual impulse to sentimentalise childhood has often led, unsurprisingly, to nostalgic representations of children’s material culture within museum displays. pg.210

Private collectors may partially explain why their collections so often portray sentimentalised understandings of childhood, as opposed to objects which raise more difficult and troubling questions about childhood experiences. pg. 210-211

(On Patrick Murray, collector and founder of The Edinburgh Museum of Childhood): in 1974 he reflected on his pride at offering adult visitors to the museum a reminder of beloved artefacts associated with their early years (Heyes et al . 1993: 1, 2). For Murray, satisfying the adult desire for nostalgic excursions to childhood was an important achievement of the museum. pg.211

Dedicated museums of childhood tend towards romanticisation whilst displays about working or institutional childhoods emphasise the abusive aspects of the past. pg.211

it is impossible to appreciate precisely what toys mean to the children who play with them. She argues that given this, scholars and museums should distinguish between the material culture of children and the material culture of childhood, with the former being objects manufactured or adapted by children and the latter those objects made by adults (Brookshaw 2009: 379– 81). Extending this analysis to museums, one might argue that there is an important difference between museums of children and museums of childhood, with the second type predominating amongst cultural institutions. pg.212

(About Edinburgh Museum): With few interactive displays there is relatively little incidence of young visitors playing, though children can be observed riding a rocking horse, dressing up or reading. pg.212

(About Edinburgh Museum): Higher numbers of adults reminiscing about their pasts can be observed here than at similar institutions such as the Victoria & Albert Museum of Childhood, and visitor engagement with displays is more often the hushed tones of adults reminding each other they used to play with certain toys or games. pg.212

Displays have considered the ways in which class, race and gender create multiple experiences of childhood, rather than universalising and idealising a single version of childhood. pg.213

McCord Museum in Montreal and the Auckland Museum were more interested in the historical perspectives and experiences of children themselves, bringing them closer to the definition of a ‘museum of children’. pg.213

Visitors were also invited to contribute their own memories of childhood as they were leaving the exhibition through comments or drawings. pg.213

Others (museums) have prospered by reinventing themselves as serving the interests of children, not just as subject matter, but as audience too. pg.216

(On the V&A Museum) consciously seeking to engage adult visitors by including more ‘serious’ topics as befits a national museum of childhood, without alienating the families and school groups who have long enjoyed visits to the museum (Stephens 2009). pg.218

Given that a pure museum of childhood is in danger of becoming an economically unviable niche interest, and a children’s museum might struggle to be more than an adventure playground, the V&A Museum of Childhood attempts to find a balance between these two identities. In catering to the needs of young visitors as a children’s museum, the museum attempts to be educational and fun, through a learning centre, dedicated play spaces, and book-reading and other directed activities. This all takes place amongst more formal display cases curated historically or thematically, giving those (generally older) visitors interested in the history of childhood a chance to engage with such material. pg.218

The most interesting contemporary museums engaging with histories of children and childhood are able to simultaneously satisfy visitor expectations while still managing to encapsulate and represent the dazzling diversity that comprises children’s experiences in the past. Rather than merely ‘putting away childish things’ within glass cases, some museums are now managing to complicate and challenge our very definitions of what is children’s cultural heritage. pg.220
