so i have this disease called "my comfort media is chess the musical" and obviously stranger things owns my life rn, you can guess where this is going but hear me out: steddie chess au

and i know what you're thinking! steve as the american and eddie as the russian, and you're so right, but consider! eddie as the talented but hot-headed american who spends years fighting for everything he has until he becomes jaded and goes off the rails, and steve as the passionate and likeable, very by-the-book russian, and robin as florence (but platonic with a capital p),, mostly bc eddie is sooo pity the child and is incredibly charismatic in his own right and steve has such a strong sense of duty but feels trapped where he is being used by people in positions of power over him. and then you make it gay, presumably culminating with eddie realising the true meaning of christmas chess and helping steve to realise too so he wins and they get together or whatever, that's not actually important
