Axetale: Trepidation
Prologue
Ebott City, a run down city of what once was. Filled with old buildings, an overflow of crime, and a cold feeling of dread no one could shake.
Maria, throughout all her life living here had been one of the lucky ones. Born into a stable household with loving parents and going to the best schools the city had to offer.
But she never took it for granted, at every opportunity she did what she could to give back.
Community service, soup kitchens, donating old clothes and toys she didn't need anymore.
Anything she could do that would at the very least help one person, she would do.
But tonight something was different.
Exiting the hospital she began walking back to her car.
She was severely underdressed for the weather, burying her hands into her jeans in an effort to stay warm.
The streets were empty, with only the occasional car passing by. No doubt due to the storm alert she had received earlier.
Despite how cold it was, Maria still enjoyed the snow. It reminded her of her father, back when they would play in the yard during the winter seasons. She would always end up running back inside because of how cold it was, only to return minutes later once she was warmed up.
The memory brought a slight smile to Maria, lifting her spirits despite everything.
The memory fleeted, leaving her with the reality of her situation.
She took a look around to see if anyone was near, upon confirming so, she went into the nearby alley and waited for a moment.
After gathering herself, Maria took out the envelope she had taken.
She wasn’t supposed to have it, but her curiosity got the better of her.
Carefully opening the seal, she opens it and takes what’s inside.
The first item was a black key with no noticeable features or marks, making the use for it unknown to her.
The second item was a folded piece of notebook paper, opening it revealed a written down location.
Parkstreet Apartments
APARTMENT 36
She knew of the place, it was downtown right by the park. The name sounded familiar to her, she couldn’t remember why but she remembered seeing it somewhere.
The buzz of her phone snapped her out of it.
She checked and saw that she had 2 missed calls from Tony.
She knew by leaving Tony’s place the way she did would get him to worry, but before she could do anything else, she needed to know.
Clutching the key and paper in her right hand, she made her way back to her car, and began heading towards the location on the paper.
There was no turning back now.
Five minutes later she was right outside the apartment, its old design and structure looming over her.
Reassuring herself, she kept repeating the apartment number to ease her nerves. As she went into the building she felt the immediate warmth within. She had a sigh of relief to be out of the cold, and was now fully ready to continue.
She made her way to the elevators and went to the third floor, greeting a nice old lady as she went to the apartment door.
She wasn’t a hundred percent sure if the key she had would even open room thirty six, but even she knew now was a bit late to just give up.
Besides, she couldn’t give up on her friend.
She took a breath and inserted the key, smiling when she heard a click.
She walked inside and closed the door behind her, immediately feeling the cold around her. Despite the building itself being warmed, the apartment she was currently in was very cold, nearly as much as outside.
“Amy?”
She called out, but to no avail. It seemed the apartment was empty, with only the presence of the cold acknowledging her.
She pushed forward nonetheless, and went into the living room. A TV laid on the floor, broken with all sorts of cords and attachments laying on the floor by it.
The cold was worse here than by the door, almost like a source for the temperature was near.
"A-Amy?"
No response.
Maria had a new feeling in the apartment than before. Before was the anxious and worried viewpoint of the situation.
Now she was afraid.
She felt her chest sink the more she was in the apartment, and her instincts were telling her she was going to find something bad in here.
Upon obeying them, Maria turned for the door, but was suddenly frozen in place.
"Maria?"
From the small hallway in front of her, came Amy's voice. But something was off, her voice was muffled, as if she were talking through a cup.
Despite that, Maria still rushed down the hall in search of her friend. There she found a door to what she presumed was the bedroom.
"Amy! Oh my, are you o-”
Maria cut herself off as she realized something, down by the corner of the hallway, something caught her eye.
Maria remembered back to when she and Amy were shopping for clothes to wear to work. Out of everything Amy bought that day she didn't forget one thing.
The pink and rose shoes.
And there laying on its side, worn out and covered in dark stains.
Was one of them
Maria now realized just how cold it was in that second, and just how much blood was on the walls.
Once the doorknob began turning, Maria bolted out the hallway and rushed towards the front door.
For a split second she looked behind her and saw the bedroom door wide open.
Suddenly she was outside in the snow, out of breath and sweating profusely. Her fear and adrenaline had made the last minute hard to remember.
In an attempt to compose herself, she closed her eyes and thought of everything that she had seen.
The array of cords, the broken TV, the cold, Amy's shoe, the blood…
But just what had been in the bedroom? Why did she hear Amy's voice? Whose blood was on the walls? Maria was confused and afraid, but one thing was certain.
That wasn't Amy, and wherever Amy was...
It wasn't safe.
While inside the apartment the weather outside seemed to have gotten worse.
What was a gente drift of snow, was now the approaching storm.
Maria checked her pockets and realized her car keys were missing. Looking back up at the third floor she only presumed they were still in that apartment.
Maria knew she wouldn't be going back up to get them. Based on her location she guessed she was only about a mile or so away from Tony's.
Pulling out her phone in an attempt to call him, she was met with no cell service, the weather's fault no doubt.
The apartment lobby was warm enough to wait until the storm passed, but Maria didn't feel safe in the same building as that room.
She thought back to the nice lady she had seen, she could ask them for help. But what could they do? With the phone lines down and the condition of the storm, no one would be coming.
Maria wanted to get to safety, she wanted to leave this place, she wanted to get back to Tony.
So she started walking.
Her lack of warm clothes was now taking a serious toll on Maria. Every second she was out there, she could feel her limbs less and less.
Along with her approaching hypothermia, the same feeling of dread hung over her.
Even despite leaving the apartment and the building altogether, the feeling never faded.
The same watching presence from whoever was in the bedroom, remained.
As if, it never left.
Maria fell on her hands, the storm had gotten to an extreme point, nothing but the white of snow surrounded her. Along with the cold pushing wind that Maria was up against.
Two blocks away she could see the deli across from Tony's house, she was so close.
She tried to get up but failed, her body had finally given out from the cold.
She was going to die here, she thought. But the truth of what was to come would only be worse.
The last thing Maria saw before she lost consciousness was the darkness she had felt earlier, now taken the shape of a man.
Their eyes strangely glowing a hue of indigo, with something dark leaking out of them.
The dark overcame her, as they carried Maria to an unknown fate.
