Peter Parker and the Homecoming Dance....
Let’s cut right to the chase: Has Marvel done it again? Or is it a freak flop?
Well, I’m sorry to say,
C’mon guys? Do you really think I’m going to bash the MCU, let alone Spider-Man Homecoming? It’s like you don’t know me at all.
The writers assume you know the origin story, so the movie picks up with Happy Hogan picking up our beloved Petey and bringing him to the airport to fight in CA:CW. So the story we get is a coming-of-age, acceptance-of-self type story as Peter struggles with Spider-man’s exclusion from the Avengers and tries to decide what type of hero he is.
I don’t think that’s a spoiler, as it’s pretty much all in the trailer. What you see is what you get. The acting is, as always, fabulous. Marvel’s absolutely A+ casting strikes again. I love Tom Holland. A lot. So did the guy sitting next to me. (Who sits directly next to a total stranger in the theater?) Robert Downey Jr. is in the movie enough to count, but he doesn’t steal the show. It is clearly a movie all about Spidey.
[On a side note, there’s a song on the soundtrack called “Maximum Effort” and my mind immediately supplied, “Even the movie writers ship Spideypool. Holy shit.” But Peter is 15 in this movie, so please, Wade, don’t go there yet.]
The supporting cast knocks it out of the park, too. Seriously, the acting is awesome. Some fans might struggle with a younger, gorgeous May. I love this iteration, but I’ve not read all the comics yet. If sexy May isn’t your thing, I get it, but if you give her a chance, I think you’ll love her as much as I do.
Plus plus also and.... This movie is freaking hilarious. I, and the rest of my theater-mates, laughed my way through the showing. And yeah, it was late and we were pretty punchy, but the characters are geeky and awkward and relatable. Combine that with the always-tight-and-onelinertastic writing of the MCU and the jokes are unbeatable.
My only critique is this: The actual storyline, while nicely embellished, is pretty standard. The power-redemption story of Spider-man copies the first Thor movie, and Peter’s high school arc has all the hidden-hobbies, boy-girl drama of High School Musical. Normally I’d rant and rave over a plot that I’ve seen so many times before, but honestly it’s packaged so well that I pretty much don’t mind at all.
Final thoughts: Go see it. Go see it again. Keep going to see it until it’s out of theaters. A film for everyone - Team Cap or Team Iron Man!
