Het warenhuis van V&D met rechts de Hoogstraat, 10 januari 1951.

Het warenhuis Vroom en Dreesman is vrijstaand gesitueerd op de hoek van het Beursplein, tussen de Hoogstraat en de Leeuwenstraat (Deze winkel verving de vooroorlogse vestigingen aan de Binnenweg, Hoogstraat, Jonker Fransstraat en de Van der Takstraat). Het is gebouwd in de periode 1948-1950 naar ontwerp van het bureau Kraaijvanger.

Toen V&D in 1950 haar deuren opende, was er in de directe omgeving nog maar weinig bouwactiviteit te bespeuren. Het was alsof men afgewacht had waar het grote warenhuis zich zou gaan vestigen, in de drie jaar daaropvolgend, stond de hele naaste omgeving in de steigers.

Het had een lange tijd geduurd voordat het warenhuis haar plaats had bepaald. In de oorlog was V&D gevestigd in een, ook door de Kraaijvangers ontworpen, noodonderkomen in het noodwinkelcomplex Dijkzigt. Vanaf dat moment werden er verschillende ontwerpen vervaardigd voor een nieuwe permanente vestiging, o.a. voor een locatie aan de Nieuwe Binnenweg en de Parkavenue in het plan Witteveen (nu Karel Doormanstraat).

Opvallend aan het nieuwe ontwerp was de uitwerking van het Amerikaanse type warenhuis, met een zo open mogelijke begane grond met transparante gevels en daarboven een min of meer gesloten massa, waarbinnen de verkoopruimtes door kunstlicht verlicht werden. Het betekende een grote omslag in het denken over winkelprogramma's en typologie.
