In Arirang's Pops in Seoul interview, P.K says his name is Park Myung-kyu (not Myung-gyu). His stage name comes from his real name, Park Kyu, PK. Since he's the one explaining it, it must be right. Which means Pops in Seoul spelling Kanghan's real name as Young-bin (not Yeong-bin) is probably also right. (I hope this doesn't sound rude or anything. Just trying to be helpful. I don’t know Korean well, so there's not much else I can do.)
I’m aware. I saw seen MVP’s Pops In Seoul segment. Essentially you’re right but also wrong. (Wrong about it’s not right to spell there names as “Myunggyu” and “Yeongbin.”) I’ll explain why I spell their names the way I do. So I do hope you read it all.
When you learn Hangul, you learn how each letter is pronounced. This then is paired with English letters so you can visually see which letters the sound makes when you pronounce them.
[P.K’s Name broken down]
The way you pronounce “Kyu” and “Gyu” are different but similar. In the Korean alphabet, the hangul letter that makes up the second part of P.K’s name is “ㄱ” which can be pronounced with a “G” or “K” sound if it’s in the initial position. When you romanize his name the spelling can be spelled either way due to it being the first letter in the character. Although pronouncing with more of a “G” is phonetically correct which is why I spell it with a G. In most cases, NOT ALL but MOST, words that begin with“ㄱ” will be pronounced with a “G” sound rather than a “K.”
[EDIT - 170426]
With a little bit of digging, I discovered that the Arirang staff had actually spelled P.K’s real name wrong on his “Pops In Seoul” profile. I checked all the P.K fansites that I know of and in their bio they all have “영규” in it. When romanized it’s spelled as “Younggyu/Youngkyu/Yeonggyu/Yeongkyu.” I also checked MVP Brazil where they announced that the name on P.K’s profile in the Pops In Seoul video was also wrong and that his real name is in fact “Park Youngkyu/박영규.”
I’ll break down Kanghan’s name which also applies to the Twins since they both have Yeong (or Young) in their names as well.
[Kanghan & The Twins Name broken down]
When you write Kanghan and the Twins full name in Hangul it’s as follows: 영빈 & 영진. They are romanized as “Youngbin” and “Youngjin.” When you write out the character “영” exactly like how each letter is sounds it’ll be written as “Yeong.” The letter ㅇ is in the initial position so it is silent. The letter ㅕ follows next and it’s pronounced as “Yeo.” Lastly is the letter ㅇ again but because it’s in the final position it’s pronounced with an “Ng” sound. Putting it all together it spells out “Yeong.” This is why I write Kanghan, Jin, and Been’s names as “Yeongbin” and “Yeongjin.”
Arirang shows will use the romanized spelling for most Korean names and words because that’s what you do with any language you’re trying to spell with English letters. Romanization isn’t always accurate to true tone pronunciation. Even if it comes from a TV Station.
One VERY VERY VERY important thing to remember is there’s absolutely no correct way to romanize any language that has it’s own system of sounds and alphabet/syllabary.
Many Korean idols spell there name one way but we as International fans write it another way. For example, many people tend to write Rap Monster and Suga’s names as “Namjoon” and “Yoongi” but I seen them write there names as “Namjun” and “Yunki” before. And that’s simply due to how you write, spell, and pronounce their names in Hangul.
I hope that you can see why I write their names the way that I do now. I won’t change how I write there names either. I’ll continue to spell it as Yeongbin, Yeongjin, Myeongjin, ect… because that’s simply how they’re written in Hangul.
