#circus#disability in the 1800s#disability#freak show#freakshow#when people were called freaks#bad parenting#parents selling their kids to circuses so they dont have to raise an inhuman wretch#disabled kids being put on display for their conditions that need medical supervision#disabled adults in circus who grew up as disabled kids in circus who saw all the other disabled kids die young#disabled circus workers aka freaks who couldnt get along with the other freaks#because of competition and internalized self-hatred/ableism and being raised in an industry that hates you and#and repeatedly being treated as subhuman until they eventually internalize that as well and treat the other freaks around them as subhumans#lack of respect#abuse#sad sad history#we have always been monsters#and to a certain extent you cant even blame the circus owners for their abuse#they just did what they could to make enough money to survive#travelling circuses dont make a lot of money#and freakshows were popular at the time#they were obviously still wrong for it but its not like anyone ever wanted to run a circus like that#at least from what i know about this#which is very little
