The goal of toddlerhood is to teach responsibility 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩 It sounds good right? Don’t we all want a responsible toddler, who can meet their own needs without much adult assistance? A child who can manage their own belongings and only needs to hear “no” once? That is what adults have wanted for centuries. And we have tried every method that we could ever think up to make this happen, yet still…. Toddlers get the reputation of being terrible but maybe it’s our expectations and goals that are “not so great”? Well the field of child development agrees that it is our expectations and adult driven goals that make toddlerhood soooo challenging. Those who understand typical toddler behaviour and have reasonable expectations, tailored to the needs of the child, are far more likely to find some joy in the toddler years.
