Here's an anecdote I would like to share here...(Whether that's relevant to Shiguang you decide after reading it)

So once in a sns I did an anonymous post on how I want a best friend in my life. My conversation with an anon went like this(paraphrased)

Anon : what is a "meaningful friendship" to you?

Me : I kind of long for a "kindred spirits" kind of bond. I wish somebody would accompany on my life's journey, share an intellectual and emotional experience . Platonically, of course.

Anon : That makes sense . Though I fail to see why it would have to be platonic . What you describe is, I think, the ideal of marriage for most people.

And...with that I think shiguang's "why can't they just be best friends?" Argument ends there. Even an anon can see that my desires, when not outright romantic, can be compared to an ideal of marriage .

Idk if that doesn't represent Shiguang more than it can. They are committed to each other. Whether they are romantically or sexually involved??

Doesn't fucking matter.

Sure! If anyone wants to drop vintage lgbtq+ movies in the replies, go ahead. (As admin, I'm barred from recs until the tournament is over.) As I've discussed before, old movies worked with different norms, languages, and presentations than we expect today, for good or for bad—so while you probably won't find movies that frame queerness the same way a modern movie would, you will still find many vintage movies that play with gender and sexuality, some of which today read (or were intended all along to be!) very queer indeed.

it feels serendipitous that you're sending this to me... when i was a strange little lonely 6th grader i hyperfixated on msnd & i still consider that my first fandom ! i used to obsessively draw them at lunch.. they were some of the first fanart i ever made

Just a headcanon: as we all know, Link's tunic was heavily damaged after he was nearly killed by malice. He decided to wear his tunic as a belt because he was afraid that it would get damaged again and again. But when Zelda finally returned, she decided to repair it because this tunic means a lot for her.

prince Steve being betrothed to princess Nancy since he was 11 or 12 years old, but they only start interacting in person when he's 15 and he falls head over heels for her, since he already had this whole idea of being a better King than his father (and a better father than his father), being faithful, having a lot of kids and loving his Queen until he died.

and then a few days before their marriage at the ripe age of 16 ('cause you know, they had to marry as quick as possible for kingdoms to stay in peace or some shit) Princess Nancy gets drunk and calls him bullshit, calls their relationship bullshit and it breaks Steve heart since it wasn't bullshit to him, he really loved her, but after that he has no desire to go forward with the marriage since he wasn't willing to marry someone who didn't love him back

so with his heart broken and the clothes on his back he runs away, he grabs a horse from the royal stable and fucking books it, doesn't care where he is going, doesn't pay attention to were he's going, he just wants to get far away from the castle, from the kingdom and from the life that maybe wasn't completely his own.

and along the way he meets the kids and Eddie (and maybe Eddie could be a creature? a witch? or maybe just some guy that turns Steve's world upsidedown and shows him what real love is 😔)

The North Pole in Queens (or Chicago?)

In my tag ramblings on an earlier post, I said that Frederick Cook filmed The Truth About the Pole in Chicago. Robert M. Bryce said the same thing on his website (which is a fantastic resource, by the way).

After doing a little more digging in the contemporary movie magazines, I’m starting to suspect this isn’t correct. Cook, who would shortly make his debut on the New York vaudeville stage, may have looked a little closer to home for a filming location. This article from The Nickelodeon of 11 February 1911 tells how Fred brought his expedition gear to “Flushing, N.J.” for filming:

“N.J.” is a typo. It should say N.Y. Flushing was home to several film studios at this time, including the Gaumont studio mentioned in the article.

Gaumont was a French company, the American branch of which was managed by pioneering filmmaker Alice Guy Blaché and her husband, Herbert Blaché. Later, in her memoirs, Madame Blaché told us exactly what she thought of Fred:

[The Memoirs of Alice Guy Blaché, ed. Anthony Slide, trans. Roberta Blaché and Simone Blaché, p. 79]

Peary truther though she may have been, Madame Blaché would know who was using her studio. She also employed Cook’s manager-director, Wilbert Melville, as an assistant director at the Flushing studio. Perhaps Melville sought permission to use the Gaumont studio because he already had easy access to the space.

Looking at the ads for the film, we see that they first give the North Pole Picture Co. address as Flushing, and then later Chicago. Why the move? It could be that Cook and Melville wanted to have a presence in Chicago in order to more easily do business with theater managers who booked acts in the western half of the country. This is my working theory, but I need to do more research on Fred’s vaudeville appearances outside of New York. We’ll see what turns up. That’s the joy of research – I started with one question, and now I have a dozen more!

Sky! Are you getting the big regional winter storm coming Monday? I'm notionally not in its range-- in the sense that where I am things are staying a few degrees above freezing -- but the forecast is still set to get low enough I'm spending all weekend dragging tropical swamp plants inside so they don't die, which is a horrible time-suck and a nuisance. It also put me in mind of Swamp Link, and I've got a pitch for the big bad of Swamp Link AU if you're open to suggestions.

OoT Morpha, or a Morpha-similar bad guy:

As scary monster that haunts the water temple, the big bad fits really nicely as an antagonist to a Link with Zora family

Pairs nicely with Farore Cult too maybe? Maybe they let it out to try to flush out a Hero but then it slips out of whatever control they thought they could exercise over it

Monster that can travel in water is also ideal for a Link who is in water A Lot

After a full day of lugging swamp plants around I'm pretty sure both they and I hate anything even approaching even regular ice, let alone an ice curse.

Downfall timeline, so I think it's timeline compatible for Morpha to still be around, locked away somehwere?

IDK if you'd want to do a revision similar to Volga getting an intelligent/more-human form in HW, but if you needed a big bad who could talk creating a Morpha-inspired OC might work too.

I’m set to get some snow, yeah! Depending on the weather patterns I might only get an inch... or more like eight (...but hopefully not, if the roads are bad on Tuesday I’ll have to reschedule getting my wisdom teeth out, groan). And oooooh that’s a really cool idea!! Some kind of water monster thing would be really neat, for all the reasons you listed :D I don’t know that I would use Morpha, just because I’d probably want to make up my own scary water monster, but that’s a good starting point for sure!

I’m thinking... tentalus and morpha vibes, maybe mixed with that one tentacley thing in spirit tracks? Big tentacles, with scary teeth? I don’t know if I want to get too much like Bellum though, hmm. Maybe it’s some sort of water monster/spirit thing that like... wants to just flood all of hyrule? Maybe it’s really hungry or something. I feel like it needs a good REASON to be the big bad, you know? We need kingdom-destroying vibes here somehow.
