This is one history lesson that you won’t fall asleep in!
Escape rooms are everywhere today – from physical locations around the world, to virtual games online, and in movies and TV shows. Amazingly, just a decade earlier, the vast majority of people around the world would not have heard of escape rooms. Have you ever wondered about the history of escape rooms? Which was the very first escape room in the world? When and where was India’s first escape room set up? How did online escape rooms become so popular? Questions like these, and more, are answered in this blog post. A brief history of escape rooms (as in 2022) Text-based escape games.
Interactive role-playing entertainment. Real Escape Game in Japan. Parapark in Hungary and HintHunt in the UK. Real Escape Game (San Francisco) and Puzzle Break in the USA. Clue Hunt in India. Online/virtual escape rooms take off during the 2020 COVID shutdown. What is an escape room? What are the features of an escape room? Yes, you have a very good idea of how an escape room works, and why they’re such an awesome thing to do with family and friends. However… There are other kinds of games, like mazes, haunted houses, scavenger hunts, ‘interactive entertainment’, which resemble the escape room experience. Here are the features what is escape room that make the escape room game completely unique… It takes place in one or two spaces; you don’t have to waste time walking from point to point. There’s a time limit, usually 60 minutes. It places the players in a dramatic storyline, like a haunted house. Players have to effect some kind of a ‘solution’ or a ‘resolution’, like finding out the reason behind the house being haunted (continuing the above example).
Players have to actively take part – finding clues, solving puzzles, and accomplishing tasks. The design of the puzzles and the tasks, combined with the time limit, makes it critical for players to communicate among themselves. They don’t require specialized knowledge or skills. They aren’t physically challenging or demanding. Now you know, for example, why the history of escape rooms doesn’t stretch back to ancient Greece, when the world’s first labyrinth (a very complex and large maze) is said to have been built. Precursors to escape rooms – live-action entertainment and ‘point and click’ video games The closest precursors to escape games as we know them would be a kind of click-and-point video games and various live-action, interactive entertainment forms that were born in the early 2000’s. Text escape games In 1988, software programmer John Wilson created a game called Behind Closed Doors. I’ll let you guess what the game was about. This was a text game, that is, it consisted entirely of text, instead of graphics.
Players would have to input text commands, such as run game (to start the game), open chest, get object, and so on to control the game… And the program would respond with output text, telling the players the result of their commands. As ancient as this sounds, you can guess this built interaction into the gameplay – that is, the player can interact with the game environment and decide how to proceed. Click-and-point ‘escape the room’ games During the 1990’s, several click-and-point escape the room type video games, like Planet Mephius Myst, and Crimson Room (the most successful game of this kind)… …were developed. These involved players trying to escape from a room or a location, using the pointer to find and uncover clues and perform actions. Apart from the obvious (visuals and graphics always score over text), this was a step up from the text escape game. It didn’t require the game to spell out the options available to the player in the form of output text. The player had to see and interact with the game environment and find out what options they had. In-person, live-action, interactive entertainment Live Action Role Playing entertainment were a crucial precursor to the modern escape room. During the early 2000’s, theater performers and game developers tried to innovate ways of scaling up their offerings, and turning the audience into active participants in the performance.
This resulted in the creation of in-person, live-action interactive entertainment. In-person – as they required participants to be present in person at the game site. Live-action – as they took place in real life, not on a computer screen or a gameboard. Interactive – as participants could actively engage with the proceedings, instead of passively following them. The best-known of these are: True Dungeon – inspired by Dungeons and Dragons, this pits players against a series of challenges, finding weapons, earning XP, and so on. First hosted in 2003. Sleep No More – a performance based on Shakespeare’s Macbeth. It allowed participants to move through the arena and interact with various characters and elements at their own pace. First performed in 2003. 5 Wits – a real-life adventure that includes a storyline, tasks and puzzles, but may not have a clear and satisfying endgame. Set up in 2004. While we’re getting closer and closer to the escape room, the gameplay clearly differs from the typical escape room scenario…as I’m sure you can see. The very first live escape room game – Real Escape Game The very first escape room in the world was Japan's Real Escape Game. The very first live escape room game in the world was Real Escape Game, set up in 2007 in Japan by an entrepreneur by the name of Takao Kato. He wanted to create a new form of entertainment, and got the inspiration for an escape room from a girl who was hooked on the online escape-the-room type games. Takao had created his new game as an event instead of the permanent escape rooms we have today. Even with minimal advertising, tickets got sold out quickly. The first one was in Kyoto, where a hundred and fifty people took part but only six managed to escape. Takao then set up a new and larger game…this time in Osaka. T
his too proved wildly popular. The sustained popularity of these temporary events persuaded Takao and other enthusiasts and entrepreneurs to design permanent location escape rooms… And it wasn’t long before escape rooms started opening up all over Japan, China and other Asian countries. Escape rooms take off in Europe – Parapark and HintHunt In 2010-2011, a Hungarian social worker by the name of Attila Gyurkovics got inspired by online find the object and escape the location type games. He wanted to create something similar in real life. And the first escape room in Europe – Parapark in Budapest, Hungary – was born. In 2012, Attila Nagy and Csaba Vinkler set up HintHunt, the UK’s very first escape room, in London. Escape rooms reach the United States – Real Escape Game in San Francisco Escape rooms first appeared in the USA in 2012. Remember Takao Kato from earlier? His friend Kazuya Iwata opened a Real Escape Game franchise in San Francisco in 2012. This was the first escape room in the United States. Next year (2013), Microsoft and EA alum Nate Martin set up Puzzle Break in Seattle – the first American escape room company. That same year (2013), India too got its very first escape room – Clue Hunt, in Bandra. And there’s been no looking back.
The 2020 pandemic and online escape rooms Like most physical businesses, the 2020 pandemic and shutdowns across the globe hit the industry hard. But rather than accept defeat, the industry innovated. Some got their game masters to strap on cameras to their heads, with the idea of offering a streamed adventure online. Others licensed virtual escape games, and offered those as an alternative to physical escape rooms. On the other hand, the people that were stuck at home really enjoyed the chance to have a thrilling experience with their loved ones online. And online escape rooms have become a part of the industry ever since – a wholesome complement to physical escape rooms. The escape room industry, post-2020 Despite challenges such as growing input costs, the brutal shutdown of 2020 and lingering after-effects of the COVID pandemic, The escape room industry has grown in strength across the globe. We’ve spawned legions of ordinary fans, movie franchises (Adam Robitel’s Escape Room), TV programs like Celebrity Escape Room, and on and on. We are an intrinsic part of modern entertainment culture. Searching for an escape room near you? Searching for escape rooms near you? Google ‘escape room near me’. Provided you don’t live in a completely offbeat location, you’re sure to get multiple search results. Go through the escape games they have, and book one that appeals to you! Review the best Escape Room in Dubai NoWayOut
What is NoWayOut? NoWayOut is an escape room in Dubai JLT, which contains four top-of-the-line rooms, each with a distinct theme. These rooms include: Da Vinci, School of Magic, Maniac and The Ring. The genres of these rooms are historical, fantasy, mystery and horror escape games respectively. The rooms have been carefully designed to maximize user immersion and to completely test the skills of each player. Through our state-of-the art facilities, players must use teamwork, creativity and their problem solving abilities to ‘escape’ within the hour. Our knowledgeable game masters are there for players. First of all, they clearly explain the escape room concept and then outline the backstory of each theme – preparing players for a fully immersive hour. NoWayOut is one of many escape room companies that feature excellent game masters, another being Escape Reality Dubai. The game masters are crucial components of the overall experience as their knowledge gives new players time to fully grasp the rules and and gives veteran players a chance to get reacquainted with the concept. As well as relaying the rules and regulations, game masters also set the scene for whichever theme the player has chosen. An example of this would be building a feeling of suspense or horror – it all depends on the room theme the players have chosen. At NoWayOut you’ll find everything you need for the perfect event. We are flexible and can cater to any client. Your staff or colleagues will enjoy our services just as much as school or university students. Whether it’s hosting on-site birthday parties or utilising our portable corporate games for your corporate events – you’ll find it on our website. How did Escape Rooms Start? SCRAP, a Japanese company, created the first documented escape room in 2007. The concept was much like the one we have today: players were ‘locked’ in a themed room and had to solve a series of puzzles and riddles within a specific time limit to ‘escape’. Its instant popularity resulted in escape games becoming a regular activity in Japan, China and eventually the rest of Asia. Attila Gyurkovics can be credited for creating Europe’s first escape room. A few years after the first documented room in Japan, Attila Gyurkovics’ ParaPark became the pioneering force behind the experimental entertainment industry for Europe. Today there are over 8000 escape rooms worldwide. How did escape rooms evolve into what they are today? We’ll have to go far back to 1988 to find the true origins, which can be found in John Wilson’s text based game Behind Closed Doors. This is one of the earlier examples of the escape subgenre. Here, players had to enter text commands to escape a restroom. It goes without saying that the escape genre has evolved to new heights since advancements in technology. Following on from these basic text based games, others such as MOTAS, Viridian Room and Myst took centre stage. The most influential of all escape game genre and the pioneer of what we see today comes from the renowned Crimson Room developed by Japanese maestro Toshimitsu Takagi. Released in japan in 2004 the game amassed a massive player views, reaching hundreds of millions of plays. The game is considered the main inspiration behind the modern day escape rooms and we have to salute and give respect to this great ground-breaking phenomenon. How do you play an Escape Game? You’ve probably heard of an escape room game – but you wouldn’t be alone in wondering what the actual process is behind the concept or simply asking, how do you actually play one? The concept is relatively simple and the title aptly describes the basics of what you need to do. Here are the linear basics of playing an escape room from start to finish. First of all, the most obvious thing you need to do is gather your team. Searching on Google for: ‘best escape room Dubai’ will show you results for most escape rooms in Dubai. They typically require between 2 and 6 players - so gather a motivated team to get started. Your team can be made up of friends, family or work colleagues. Due to the flexibility and variety of escape room themes, you’re guaranteed to find something that suits the make-up of your group. Book one of the games! There is a versatile array of escape rooms in Dubai. Themes range anywhere from fantasy escape rooms to mystery escape rooms among many, many others. There also are a number of live escape rooms in Dubai for players who are looking for an even more immersive experience. A live actor escape room can completely change the dynamic of your gaming experience. Their role varies depending on the theme you have selected, so be prepared for any outcome. They can encourage your progress by providing hints and clues whilst remaining in character or halt your progress by aiming to frighten and confuse you. The live actor isn’t there to make up the numbers or simply be a showpiece – you can be certain that they’ll have a relevant role in the game. They’re there to add to the immersion of the horror room, for example, or provide clues to drive the narrative. Listen to what they have to say to make the most out of the experience. An escape room in Dubai JLT with a live actor means you’ll be playing with someone vastly experienced and familiar with every aspect of the room. They’ll be showing subtle hints and clues with their body language and movements. Remain observant throughout the hour and you never know what hint or clue the live actor will show you next! Escape room actors are great at what they do and must be respected throughout the game Their job is to continuously play the same room whilst having to adapt and improvise to the dynamic of each new group that they encounter. Their job is hard so it would be reasonable to assume that they need the respect of all players. Let’s get into the most important aspect and central feature of the escape room concept: clues and puzzles. To escape, you must find clues and solve puzzles. Clues are hidden throughout the room. Search thoroughly and find them in unexpected places to advance through the narrative. As we previously mentioned, try out escape rooms with live actors to experience a room with live clues. The actors have the option to tell players clues or help with puzzles whilst always staying in character. Escape room puzzles will consist of logic based technical games, finding hidden objects or objects that visible but seemingly out of reach. Others puzzles could involve players to match together different items or the mind-boggling process of descrambling anagrams and solving strange riddles. The purpose of completing these tasks is to give the players an idea of what to do next. These puzzles are effective at getting your group thinking creatively and out-the-box, which encourages greater engagement in the task and drives a strong team ethic. There will be multiple puzzles scattered around the room – so don’t think there will only be two or three. Completing ALL of these puzzles will eventually lead to your ‘escape’. The most recognisable features of an escape room are the following: lock and keys, locked door, multiple rooms inside your chosen game, hidden doors, puzzle games, a specific theme. Typically, escape rooms in Dubai will have a 60-minute timer, which starts ticking down as soon as the doors are shut. Escape within this time to ‘win’ the game! Get locked in and now the fun begins. Remember: you can leave at any time – just let the game master know and they’ll let you out.

Day 11 of our cruise ... Yesterday was a sea day so we slobbed the day away only dragging ourselves out of the room for food and drinks and a show. Today we are in Malaga and the sun is shining rather enthusiastically so we thought let's enjoy this weather by doing 2 more escape rooms :D The first one was the X Door and this was a good room with a lovely host nothing exceptional about it but nothing bad either. The second was Parapark and much like their UK branch this one was also good but nothing exceptional about it. The host at this one really didn't speak English but was able to help us anyway with pictures. Another towel animal guessing game for you I think it looks a little like a bat?

HISTORY AND ORIGIN OF ESCAPE GAMES
First seen on: https://lockacademy.com/en/history-and-origin-of-escape-games/
The origin of Escape Games comes from video games called “Escape Room” or “Escape Game”. The player has to solve riddles by interacting with his surroundings in order to escape from a room and access the next level. The first video game of Escape Rooms, Crimson Room, was out in 2004. Toshimitsu Takagi was its maker. The term Takagim will appear to designate this type of games.
It was the Japanese company SCARP, in 2007, that chose to create the concept of Live Room Escape. Takao Kato, its founder, wanted to stage the players in a themed room where they had to solve riddles in order to escape from it in a defined period of time (usually one hour). The history of escape games was then developed in the rest of Asia, before arriving in Europe. In Chine, the “Beijing Takagism Club” was founded in 2012.
Budapest, in Hungary, was the first city in Europe to create a Live Escape Game. Indeed, in 2011, the company Parapark was born. Its founder, Attila Gyurkovics, had the idea to open a Live Escape Game without the knowledge that they were already well developed in Asia. He was working on a new Team Building activity. One year later, the origin of escape games continued with the first franchise in Hungary: Hint Hunt. The same year, SCRAP opened the first Escape Game in the United States, under the name “Real Escape Game”. Hint Hunt was quickly brought to England, and then in France in 2013. 2013 is also the year when the history of escape games started in Canada.
Today we count 367 escape rooms in France, with more than 64 Escape Games in Paris throughout 20 firms. Following Hint Hunt’s example, many rooms were opened from April 2014 to 2015. In fact, almost 10 news firms opened each month between April and June 2015. And the history of Escape Games is far from being finished because new rooms open each week in France!
Lock Academy arrived in the historic of Escape Games in Paris, on the 10th of October 2015!
WHAT ARE THE INSPIRATIONS OF ESCAPE GAMES?
We can see differences between Asian and European rooms. In Asia, the Escape Rooms are more focused on competition, whereas in Europe the clients are keen on immersion.
A great source of inspiration for Live Escape Games is live role play. Those games ask the players to personify a character. The players will interact with the others while pretending to be his character in order to solve their mission. In a Live Escape Game, the players are in a scene where they sometimes have to personify characters in order to escape their room.
Treasure hunts also inspired Escape Games because the players need to look for clues in a specific room.
The different themes of the escape rooms are often inspired by movies or books. Other firms like Lock Academy chose to create their own universe. Indeed, at Lock Academy you personify detective apprentices and play in the unique rooms of the school in order to solve mysterious investigations!
Are you ready to become real heroes and live up to the challenge? Discover our investigations!
Will you be the best detective?

Escape the Room
We’ve all seen the recent popularity of escape rooms, of course, Escape Games Canada has paid special attention since we’re part of the phenomenon. Escaping is a great option for young adults to connect with friends, and certainly a morale and team building activity for employees. Escape rooms can have themes or dynamically designed sets; most companies offer a few different game options to cater to different tastes. The puzzle solving, the riddles, the storyline, the trap doors, have all grown to such popularity that even just developing new Escape The Room games is fun for the owners; and that’s why we love it! But where did this all start?
Video Games – The Original Escape Room
The idea originated with the “point and click” video games of the 1980’s and has evolved beyond just video games to become lifelike representations of these puzzle room scenarios. A Japanese developer by the name of Takao Kato first developed his escape room in 2006 in Kyoto, Japan. He hoped to bring the excitement he found in Manga books and video games to life. He started his company, Real Escape Game, in 2007 and operated a growing number of escape rooms under that name. The first room was small by today’s standards, built to hold 5 or 6 players, but the idea was embraced by the public and since then, rooms have cropped up all over the world. At last count, there was a total of over 2800 escape rooms worldwide. Some of them hold a limited number of players, while others can accommodate up to about 20 players at a time. From Kyoto, the idea spread to Singapore, and we have Kazuya Iwata, a friend of Mr. Kato’s, to thank for bringing the game across the ocean to San Francisco in 2012. Pictured above, Nintendo DS Game “Nine hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors” was built around being locked in a room and finding your way out while solving a mystery!
A Worldwide Phenomenon
In 2011 a Hungarian company by the name of Parapark was opened in Budapest and later brought the business to over 20 locations in Europe and Australia. The owner, Attila Gyurkovics, claims that it was his experience as a personality trainer and not the Japanese escape rooms that were the basis for his idea.
Parapark is now located Geneva, Switzerland In cities, both large and small, the escape room phenomenon continues to grow and games are more and more in demand. It’s thought that escape rooms offer a realistic (but safe) escape for adults from busy lives and responsibilities; somewhere in which they can build teamwork skills and use their minds in ways completely different from what their jobs may offer. Although the rooms are often visited by people from all walks of life and all ages, the average escape room visitor is between the ages of 20 and 35 years. Whether you enjoy a horror theme or something with old fashioned flair, there is very likely an escape room that caters to your tastes and idea of fun. It’s a way to put yourself in a daring escape situation, without any of the actual danger. Remember, you can always leave the room in case of an emergency. But we would suggest you use the facilities beforehand, otherwise, you might ruin your fun by leaving early! Click to Post
