3 - Paranormal Activity Next of Kin
Tumblr media
Synopsis: A young woman leads a team on producing a documentary about her birth family at an isolated Amish farm.
Year/Country: 2021 / US
Subgenres: found footage, cult
Reason for watching: Despite the genre being somewhat overplayed, I remain a fan of the paranormal activity films and found footage more broadly.
Highlights: I think there was some good atmosphere in this one. Also there was some legitimately scary moments.
Lowlights: The style (found footage) actually detracted from the film, I think.
Rewatchabilty: Maybe.
Overall review: I did like the story though it was simple at its heart - a young woman has found her birth family through her DNA and discovers that her mom was part of an Amish community. She sets out to find more and is convinced to make it a documentary. Creepiness and secrets start to come out during her time at a remote farm. Though I'm a found footage fan, I felt that by making this film in that style it only muddied the end result - the climax would have been so much more effective if I didn't keep questioning why the cameras were being used the way they were (and, I could be wrong, but I think there were some moments where the logistics didn't even make sense). The movie would have still worked with the trio as documentary film makers being filmed in a more traditional way.
Who should watch it?: Paranormal Activity competitions (I'm not actively one, but wouldn't mind making my way through them). Die hard found footage fans. I feel that the genre is so divisive that if you don't like the genre, you definitely won't like this.

I have to admit that when I first heard of this film, I completely dismissed it and was angry that they were bringing back the series after it ended so well (I liked the The Ghost Dimension, so sue me). But watching it now, I realize that I slept on a really good film! The mystery of who the mom was genuinely interesting and well done. The tension was built up nicely and the pay off was pretty good. My one criticism is the creature design at the end. All this build up for a standard "emaciated white person" design. Could have at least added extra arms.
Final thoughts: maybe this would have done better if it wasn't attached to the paranormal activity label?

All Paranormal Activity Films (1-7)
Paranormal Activity 1-4 - SAFE
Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones - SAFE
Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension - NOT SAFE. Graphic v* scene during the exorcism when everything seems fine you can see it coming she v* into the camera (because it was filmed for 3D). I watched it and if I remember it was green because of the night vision. (Between 1h and 1h 17m not exact but just after you think the exorcism is over)
Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin - SAFE

SUMMARY: A young woman travels back to a secluded Amish community in hopes of finding about her family before she was abandonded as a baby. Strange supernatural events start to take place around her and she with the documentary crew finds out the community might be hiding something sinister among them.

So here I am again, watching a bunch of YouTube analyses of horror movies I haven’t watched, looking at CZsWorld’s videos about Asmodeus and Paimon in Paranormal Activity and Hereditary respectively;
And upon thinking about how both stories end the same way, with the demons succeeding in possessing a human host with help from their in-movie cults…
I had the image of Asmodeus and Paimon meeting up on Earth (probably in some bar or something) in their new bodies (Samuel and Peter) and chilling together, catching up on what they’ve been doing and swapping stories on the many MANY people they harassed/traumatized/straight up murdered with the help of their followers.

when you're watching a horror movie and you have to occasionally pause and walk away to collect yourself.. not because of the horror bits, but because the main characters are So Fucking Rude that they are giving you a vast case of secondhand embarrassment
i'm not worried that you will be KILLED
I'm worried that you will be CAUGHT and have to EXPLAIN YOURSELF and yes this is a horror movie and I'm sure the plot means that at least a couple of these people are actually Hiding Insidious Doings, but you don't have the right to invade their home with cameras and pry into their affairs
i'm gonna finish this because I Have To Know
but it's gonna take me all night because i can't deal with how selfrighteous they are being

the first paranormal activity movie was scary bc it had the "it could've happened to you. it still could happen to you. are you brave enough to sleep with the lights out? is your house yours or do you belong to this house or something so sinister you couldn't see it in your worst nightmare?" factor which was amazing. the second and third one took that fear off bc the haunting/possession was linked to a family BUT the fear was replaced with "what if your family was also fucked up and someone made a deal with demon but you was never aware of it because that's not exactly the thing you'd talk about during family dinners? what if you were cursed bc someone in my family was greedy enough to sacrifice you even before i was born?". the ghost dimension however lifted both of those fears off to replace it with "oooh scary dark shadow thing just hanging around in a very specific house linked directly to the first haunting/possession. the child is becoming possessed in such a way it could have been an early season supernatural episode. scary shadow thing and scary little girl in a white nightgown ooooooo so scary so terrifying are you shaking in your boots yet or is another jumpscare necessary?" which was well. pissing on the whole franchise with a movie with plot so dense yet so disconnected to the main storylines it could've been a standalone movie not linked to ANY horror movie franchise and that separation, in my opinion, could've saved the whole thing

The Franchise Files - Paranormal Activity - The Conclusion.
So after watching almost 9 hours of Paranormal Activity movies, what are my thoughts? Well, if we pretend Next of Kin doesn’t exist, this is a pretty decent franchise. We stick with the same cult/coven and demon throughout all 6 movies. We get new characters every time, but the overarching story stays the same. The story itself has a very clear beginning, middle and end. The films just weren’t…
