cloud: yup! depending on the version of the paracosm, there can be up to six or seven married couples on-screen, and several others with spouses offscreen!

sun: my youngest would be haley, who is generally a few months old. oldest is arashi, who’s like, 5000. in human age though? nonna giada, who’s 87.

moon: my very first para is a toss-up between austin and frankie. honorable mention to my stuffed monkey, monk (yes, yes, so creative) and his friends who, while i wouldn’t classify them as paras because they didn’t live consistently in their own structured world, were featured in some of my first recurring daydreams. as for austin and frankie? they’re aged up now, and i may or may not have a scene in every daydream where frankie drives by in a monster truck. who to tell?😉 (lmao he also has a recurring role in one of my older, nostalgic paracosms. so does austin.)

star: i started around six or seven, though i can pinpoint that it became maladaptive around sixth grade, so ten or eleven there.

earth: my first paracosm was an Austin and Ally spinoff. the only issue was that my then tiny little mind was not yet creative enough to create a setting outside of the one i was around. hence, the Austin and Ally cast, along with several of my original paras, lived in my little house (mini-me’s physics was wild. there were like, ten of them. and my house wasn’t big.) also, their mother was the golden fairy queen from tinker bell. the entire plot was just them getting up to some mad shenanigans. i loved it.

on femslash, desire lines, citational generosity, and me

Fandom is a strange place to be. In recent years I’ve spent an increasing amount of time pondering the proportion of my life taken up by femslash, pondering the way it’s changed other parts of who I am, questioning where chainofclovers ends and [real name] begins, drawing and redrawing those boundaries.

This is a question I have asked myself: “What does it mean that, in a year of working really hard on all sorts of writing, the most successful writing I did was about Grace Hanson having sex with Frankie Bergstein?”

No answers here, but something exceptional happened to me in October of last year, something that both exploded and solidified the conversation I was having with myself, with my wife, with a few close friends. Alice Kelly, then a student in the final year of her PhD, now a postdoc scholar of femslash, contacted me to say she was interested in writing an academic article about the literary citations in my Grace and Frankie fanfic “Done with the Compass, Done with the Chart.”

It goes without saying, but I’ll say it: !!!

And now, after months of writing and revision and hard work, Alice’s article “Fan fiction as feminist citation: Lesbian (para)textuality in chainofclovers's ‘Done with the Compass, Done with the Chart’ (2017)” is live in the latest issue of Transformative Works and Cultures. It doesn’t quite seem possible that there could be a work of scholarship about my fanfic. Like most writers I know, I’d write whether or not there was an audience, because even without an audience I’d have things to say. But that doesn’t mean I don’t cherish every comment, every moment of engagement. I can admit it: writing is better with an audience, better with a reciprocal community of readers and writers and readers-and-writers. The existence of this paper feels like one thousand fic comments. The intensity of my gratitude is, um, intense.

Alice wrote a beautiful paper, too. It manages to be about the queer heart of Grace and Frankie’s relationship, my writing (did I mention I’m in a state of disbelief?), Emily Dickinson (the title of my fic comes from her poem “Wild nights—Wild nights!”), Natalie Diaz (the epigraphs of the Grace chapters are quotations from her poem “From the Desire Field”), the way both the plot and citational structure of my story reflect the culture of feminist citation in contrast to and rejection of compulsory heteropatriarchal citational practices, and the way the gift-oriented nature of fanfic and fandom is a participation in that same culture. And a whole lot more. There’s Sara Ahmed! There’s the concept of desire lines as the queerness that insists upon itself, as the path forward when the conventional maps and compasses stop working! There’s Grace Hanson and Frankie Bergstein having and talking about sex right there in an academic journal!

The paper speaks back to itself and to a larger framework of fanworks and fan culture in countless ways. I’m incredibly grateful to Alice for writing it, and for including me in the process. It was an absolute pleasure to collaborate with her, to be invited in to ask questions and share ideas and learn from the histories and constructs she deftly explores. Thank you, @amk-1992.

I read the paper in its final published form on a solo flight last week. Before takeoff, I’d opened the webpage on my phone, then went into airplane mode and read the paper suspended in midair. It was a night flight, and the cabin was dark. No one—including me—had their overhead reading lights on. That felt unusual: on the several night flights I’ve taken in the past, there are usually at least a few pools of light illuminating the corresponding seats with beautiful specificity. But that night, the whole plane was dim but for seat-belt signs, No Smoking signs, and the glow from various cell phones and tablets, the ubiquity and accessibility of those self-sustaining screens creating, in fact, a reason not to turn on a light overhead. Because the light from cell phone screens doesn’t reach as far as light from a bulb—because it comes from below and not above, where everyone can see—my own cell phone felt like the brightest thing on the plane. And yet the light was unremarkable to the other passengers, who were either asleep or absorbed in screens of their own.

I was totally alone in the dark among rows of strangers, reading about myself.

That experience—a little light, a secret glow, a way to see myself more clearly—is not unlike my relationship with fandom and femslash. I’ve been part of fandom(s) for over a decade, and, as I can clearly see now, was fannish-but-devoid-of-outlet about media well before that official involvement. In many ways my relationship with fandom has been more fraught than my relationship to my own lesbianism.

I came out as queer more or less the moment it felt safe, trying on various labels over the first years, suffering through stilted conversations with well-meaning people who Really Wanted To Understand, feeling relief as my queerness became a normalized part of my relationships with family and friends, delighting in LGBTQ community, landing on lesbian and queer and femme as the words that fit me best, falling in love. While I believe acceptance and safety should be fundamental human rights, not conditional gifts to a lucky beneficiary, I’m extremely aware of how incredibly lucky I’ve been.

I didn’t write my first fanfic until I’d been out as queer for a few years. While I’d long grown past a need to hide my queerness, it took me much longer to grow out of hiding my fannishness. I hate the concept that there’s a definable distinction between real life and online life, but I subscribed to it nonetheless. In my “real life” I’m hardly a famous writer or anything like that. The audience for my poems and stories is a fraction of the size of the audience for my fanfic. Still, it was impossible for me to imagine merging the two ways that I write, the [real name] me who juggles day job and occasional freelance and writing and fandom and so many other things, and the chainofclovers me who goes into the fandom space to publish my fic and write tumblr posts and engage in enthusiastic conversation. I’m not entirely sure why I’ve felt so secretive about fandom in so many non-fandom contexts. I mean, it’s super normal to not want your coworkers to know that you anonymously publish explicit sex writing on the internet. That seems reasonable to me. But my writing as [real name] and as chainofclovers are all foremost about being a queer woman in the world and wanting to center queer narratives every chance I get. It’s what I’m here to do, under whatever name I choose! And given a safe and understanding atmosphere, in the three-dimensional world and online, there’s nothing contradictory about my many ways of writing queerness.

Although I believe that last sentence wholeheartedly, it’s still difficult for me to grasp what it would mean if my fannish life and the rest of my life were one and the same. It’s a difficult concept even though—because I’m always me wherever I am—it’s already technically true. I have many wonderful connections to people in my [real name] world and my chainofclovers world, all of which matter to me very much, but there’s only a small group of people who populate both worlds. One of my goals for the rest of my thirties is to continue to work on not compartmentalizing those worlds by default. So far, my decision to share chainofclovers with people from my [real name] life and to share my [real name] life with people who first knew me as chainofclovers has resulted only in good things, only in an increase in happiness, and an increase in the security and joy that comes from queer community, from, in a sense, the feminist citational framework that brings collective wisdom, history, and love to the lives of queer women and non-binary people.

I’m so thankful to Alice for placing me in that history. (I hope it doesn’t sound too grandiose to make that claim.) No matter how many people the article reaches, it reached me, and made me feel tangible. Some writers’ work isn’t remembered in the way they’d truly want until after they’re dead; I’m so blessed that it happened to me while I’m still here. That in and of itself feels very much in line with the gift culture of fandom and of feminist citation. When I posted “Done with the Compass, Done with the Chart,” I wanted to place Grace and Frankie’s lives in the context of Emily Dickinson and Natalie Diaz—I wanted my story to soak up all that good queer wisdom and the undeniable concreteness of queer love. In writing this paper, citations flying left and right, Alice has placed me in that same context. It was so generous of her to do that, and it—who I am as a fic writer, and Grace/Frankie sex, and Emily Dickinson’s fierce ghost, and queer narratives as my top priority, and my self as [real name] and my self as chainofclovers, all of it—feels like real life.

SPRING BREAK: SOUTH PADRE ISLAND TEXAS

Time to get out of the frigid weather and have some warm rays and Spring fun and this year, Lima Heights is giving an all expenses paid trip to South Padre Island, Texas! The following information on this post will give times, places and the itinerary of the trip which will occur April 24th-29th. Since we will be out of state, we expect you to be on your best behavior and represent the school appropriately.

AS A SPECIAL BONUS: We will be offering 50 points for doing any kind of scene during this trip. The catch? The scene MUST involve Water. Don’t care how, don’t care why, but it must incorporate water in some predominant way (this does not mean leave a glass of water by the night stand, it must play some sort of role in the scene).

(Everything on this post other than under the OOC heading is IC and public information)

Rules:

All school rules are still in effect - use titles, be appropriate, etc.

Curfew: Everyone must be in their assigned rooms between the hours of 12am-6am.

No one can leave the hotel unaccompanied. Escort rules at the school apply on this trip. 1 Dom-2 subs/switches, 1 switch-1 switch/sub.

No one can leave the town unless on an excursion listed on the itinerary.

No drugs of any kind.

Alcohol is only allowed for those of age and any ridiculous drunken shenanigans will be met with firm consequences.

Planned excursions are mandatory attendance.

We will be staying at Pearl South Padre Resort where 2 bedroom condos are booked. Each suite has two rooms, private bathroom, kitchenette with mini fridge and microwave, a king size bed, 2 queens and a pullout sofa in a living room with a balcony over the beach. The hotel has the following amenities: water activities (swimming, volleyball, parasailing, jet ski and paddleboat rental), spa, restaurants, fitness center, pools, hot tubs, swim up bar and horseback riding on beach. As always, any Triggering plots or plots that will affect a large amount of people MUST be talked about and approved by the admins.

There will be guards and staff EVERYWHERE as supervision, so keep in mind most anything you do can potentially be seen/heard etc.

If your character is going to break the rules, please be reasonable and understand there will be consequences.

Don’t break the game.

For the Water scene, have it played out by end of the day on the 29th. For this one only, we’ll accept WELL DEVELOPED head canons as well as full paras. Please do not give us four sentences. If I feel the HC is too weak (like I don’t have a good idea of what the scene was or how the characters were affected or reacted) I will not count it. I’m being nice because this scene is during a fun in-play thing, but please understand the point is for development and being creative.

New Haven’s Camacho Garage puts focus on contemporary Mexican street food

The wait is over, and there is a buzz going around town. Camacho Garage, featuring contemporary Mexican street food, has opened in New Haven’s Westville neighborhood, at 36 Fountain St.

The restaurant follows the trend of offering small plates, or tapas. Ceviche and raw bar offerings, and an extensive taco menu with fillings such as adobo marinated chicken, slow roasted lamb, confit of duck and wild mushrooms and cactus is offered, on house-made, heirloom, corn tortillas or “naked” as a filling over a bowl of grains, beans, greens and avocado.

Small-bite menu items include Tamal de Birria (slowly braised lamb and corn dumplings), Mexican Hot Dog (bacon wrapped turkey sausage dog), Ensalada de Nopales (cactus), and Duck Tambores (drumettes). The Queso Flameado (mushrooms and poblanos served with flour or corn tortillas and of course melted cheese) is served in a scorching-hot stone vessel — the perfect dish to share while your order is being prepared

.A few larger plates served family-style for four — “Para Todos” — are featured as well as daily specials. Mexican street corn, a traditional Mexican street food, is served topped with chipotle aioli, Cojita cheese, Ancho chili powder with a lime wedge to squeeze on top. Another favorite, fried sweet plantains, is drizzled with Mexican cream. With just the right kick, the Borracho beans are pinto beans cooked in beer and tequila with chipotle, onions, pickled cauliflower, carrots and jalapenos. Go all the way, adding bacon or chorizo.The desserts will wow you, too. The warm, filled churros, you won’t be able to eat just one; luckily, three were served. Milk chocolate stuffed figs, flan and paletas, chocolate lava cake and other heavenly sweet endings round out the menu.

Complementing the menu are libations including Mexican and local beers, specialty cocktails, tequila, mescal and traditional and inspired Mexican beverages. The beverage menu picks up on the garage theme with “Low Octane” offerings that include non-alcoholic beverages such as Jarritos fruit sodas, Topo Chico mineral water, Horchata, seasonal, house-made frescas and spritzers, refreshing iced teas and house-squeezed vegetable juices. The “High Octane” selections include favorites from the restaurant’s sister brands (i.e. the Geronimo Margarita), as well as 15-plus original cocktail offerings such as Papa Doble (Montelobos Mezcal Joven, Lazzaroni maraschino, grapefruit, lime), Frankie Goes to Hollywood (Plantation Pineapple, Lagrimas de Dolore Mezcal Joven, ginger beer), Senor Camacho (Presidente Brandy, Bruxo “X” Mezcal, lime, agave) and Wake the Dead (Casamigos Reposado, vanilla simple syrup, espresso, cocoa powder).The proprietors are no strangers to the culinary scene here and beyond. Executive Chef/co-owner Arturo Franco-Camacho, co-owners Robert Bolduc and Marc Knight, and the team behind the award-winning Geronimo Tequila Bar and Southwest Grill, Shell & Bones Oyster Bar and Grill, and Nantucket’s Bar Yoshi have created a fun and lively atmosphere. The vintage garage theme is reminiscent of Camacho’s father’s garage in Mexico.

Almodóvar, Malick, Jarmusch y Loach, pesos pesados del Festival de Cannes

París, 18 abr (EFE).- Pedro Almodóvar, Terrence Malick, Jim Jarmusch o Ken Loach son algunos de los pesos pesados que competirán en la 72 edición del Festival de Cannes, según la programación oficial desvelada este jueves en París por su delegado general, Thierry Frémaux. Una edición en la que 19 películas competirán por la Palma de Oro y en la que "Dolor y Gloria" será la sexta oportunidad para Almodóvar de hacerse con el premio principal del festival. La película de Almodóvar tendrá una fuerte competencia en títulos como el drama histórico "A Hidden Life", situado en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, de Terrence Malick, que marcará el regreso del director estadounidense ocho años después de haber logrado la Palma de Oro con "The Tree of Life". El trofeo tampoco se le resistió al británico Ken Loach en 2006 con "The wind that strakes the Barley" y en 2016 con "I, Daniel Blake". Ahora competirá con "Sorry, we missed you", la historia de una familia tratando de combatir las deudas que le asedian desde la crisis financiera de 2008. "Muy kenlochiana", en palabras de Frémaux. Entre los francófonos, otros clásicos del festival. Los hermanos belgas Jean-Pierre y Luc Dardenne buscarán su tercera Palma -tras las de "Rosetta" (1999) y "L'enfant" (2005)- con un título social y de actualidad, "Le jeune Ahmed", sobre la radicalización islamista de un joven en la actual Europa. También en este tono "Les Misérables", del maliense Ladj Ly, que pone el foco en la violencia policial y marginación de los jóvenes en la periferia parisina. El canadiense Xavier Dolan, uno de los jóvenes cineastas preferidos por Cannes, participará con una película que dirige y protagoniza, "Matthias et Maxime". El brasileño Kleber Mendonça Filho, autor de "Aquarius", fue seleccionado con "Bacurau", centrada en los oscuros secretos de un grupo de vecinos, que codirige junto a Juliano Dornelles, y que está protagonizada por Sonia Braga y el alemán Udo Kier. A Jarmusch le tocará abrir la competición con "The Dead don't die", una película de zombies protagonizada por un elenco considerable: Adam Driver, Bill Murray, Chloë Sevigny, Tilda Swinton, Steve Buscemi, Selena Gomez y Tom Waits. El filme se estrenará al mismo tiempo en las salas europeas, una exigencia que la organización del festival ha establecido para la obra seleccionada para la apertura, según dijo el presidente, Pierre Lescure, que aclaró que ya hay 400 salas dispuestas a acoger la proyección ese día. La presencia de directoras sigue siendo discreta aunque "in crescendo", con cuatro mujeres en la competición oficial: las francesas Mati Diop ("Atlantique"), Justine Triet, ("Sibyl"), y Céline Sciamma, ("Portrait de la jeune fille en feu"), y la austríaca Jessica Hausner ("Little Joe"), "bellos retratos femeninos", según Lescure. En la sección "Una cierta mirada", la segunda en importancia del festival, entran Annie Silverstein ("Bull"), la canadiense Monia Chokri ("La femme de mon frère") o Zabou Breitman y Eléa Gobbé-Mévellec ("Les Hirondelles de Kaboul"), adaptación del libro homónimo de Yasmina Khadra . La presencia española se limita a Almodóvar en la competición principal y a Oliver Laxe ("O que arde", sobre los incendios en Galicia) y Albert Serra ("Liberté", sobre la aristocracia en los años de la Revolución Francesa) en Una cierta mirada. Mientras la latinoamericana se completa con la brasileña "Vida invisivel", de Karim Aïnouz, en Una cierta mirada, y la argentina "Que sea ley", de Juan Solanas, en sesión especial. Además el mexicano Alfonso Cuarón asistirá como presentador de la proyección de una restaurada "The Shining", el clásico de Stanley Kubrick protagonizado por Jack Nicholson, y su amigo y compatriota Alejandro González Iñárritu presidirá el jurado de la competición oficial. Fuera de competición habrá hueco para estrellas ajenas al cine, como Elton John, que acudirá a la ciudad mediterránea para la presentación de una película en su honor, "Rocketman". Y los organizadores no aclararon si el futbolista argentino Diego Maradona presenciará el documental que lleva su nombre, realizado por el británico Asif Kapadia. Cincuenta y tres años después del estreno de "Un hombre y una mujer", dos instituciones del cine, Anouk Aimée y Jean-Louis Trintignant, regresan en una continuación con "Les Plus belles années d'une vie", de Claude Lelouch, también fuera de competición. El danés Nicolas Winding Refn, con una serie televisiva o veteranos como Abel Ferrara y Werner Herzog también se han colado en una programación a la que aún faltan algunos nombres por unirse, pero no será el de Quentin Tarantino, que no ha llegado a tiempo con su "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" para participar en un festival que se celebrará del 14 al 25 de mayo. De nuevo, ninguna creación de Netflix entró en el certamen, que sigue exigiendo el estreno en salas para la clasificación final. Pese a esto, Frémaux indicó que las relaciones con la plataforma son buenas pero que el requisito sigue siendo ineludible. Cannes rendirá homenaje en esta ocasión al actor Alain Delon, que recibirá allí la Palma de Honor por toda su carrera, y a la recién fallecida Agnès Varda, icono de la Nouvelle Vague, que protagoniza este año el cartel, un gesto con el que la organización parece querer sanar también las críticas por la falta de igualdad. "Le deseo que haga una buena película, que es lo que cuenta más por un artista como él", apuntó. - Sí estará en Cannes el cantante Elton John, que acudirá en el marco de la proyección de "Rocketman", filme sobre su vida protagonizado por Taron Egerton y Bryce Dallas Howard, dirigido por Dexter Fletcher y presentado fuera de competición. "Esconderemos un piano por si quiere regalarnos con su inmenso talento", dijo Frémaux. - Y estará pero no se le verá, el siempre esquivo Terrence Malick. Ocho años después de ganar la Palma de Oro del festival por "El árbol de la vida", regresa con "A Hidden Life", una historia ambientada en la Segunda Guerra Mundial y protagonizada por Matthias Schoenaerts y Michael Nyqvist. "No me pregunten si estará en Cannes", señaló Frémaux, antes de precisar, "estará pero vosotros, los periodistas, no lo veréis". - Fuera de competición llegará "Diego Maradona", un documental sobre el gran futbolista argentino, dirigido por Asif Kapadia, que ya se ha ocupado de otras figuras como Ayrton Senna o Any Winehouse. Será el segundo documental sobre Maradona que se presente en Cannes. En 2008 el astro argentino estuvo presente en el festival con la película que realizó sobre su figura Emir Kusturica. - El director mexicano Alfonso Cuarón no pudo participar el año pasado en Cannes porque "Roma" era una producción de Netflix destinada a las televisiones, lo que no estaba en consonancia con las normas del festival francés. Este año sí viajará a Cannes, para presentar una copia restaurada del clásico de Stanley Kubrick "El resplandor" (1980). - La cuota televisiva la pondrá Nicolas Winding Refren con su serie "Too old to die young - north of hollywood, west of hell", de la que se emitirán los capítulos 4 y 5, fuera de competición. Además el siempre polémico realizador danés participará en una clase magistral en Cannes en la que explicará las diferencias de hacer cine para la gran pantalla o series para la televisión, asunto sobre el que "tiene cosas apasionantes que decir", según Frémaux. - Se podrá ver, en Una cierta mirada, una nueva versión de un gran clásico francés, la vida de Juana de Arco. Bruno Dumont continúa con la historia de la heroína, cuya infancia narró en "Jeannette". De nuevo protagonizada por Lise Leplat Prudhomme. - Y Canarias estará presente en el festival a través de "La Gomera", un proyecto del rumano Corneliu Porumboiu que sigue a un policía que viaja a esa isla para aprender El Silbo (lenguaje silbado que es Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Unesco).
