Are you still doing the whump awakening asks? Because I've been re-reading The Return of the King and it just hit me like a lightning bolt. Faramir and the whole Houses of Healing arc were absolutely my whump awakening. In particular this line:
"Last of all he came. His men passed in. The mounted knights returned, and at their rear the banner of Dol Amroth, and the Prince. And in his arms before him on his horse he bore the body of his kinsman, Faramir son of Denethor, found upon the stricken field."
All of those scenes are whumpy gold, but this one is seared itself into my brain ever since I first read it. Also possibly the source of my fondness for the 'manhandling to rescue' trope?
Yes 👏👏👏 Just yes

Hi! I would like to ask if you could maybe recommend Band of Brothers blogs to follow? I'm interested in fanfic, graphics, GIFs, everything related to Band of Brothers. I hope it's not rude I sent this ask to more people, I'm new to Tumblr and I still have a lot to learn about Tumblr etiquette.
You sure can, Kind Anonymous Friend! And this ask isn't rude at all - rec lists are a time-honored tradition here on Tumblr and I'm happy to help. Sending a couple people the same ask isn't usually considered rude ...unless you're copy-pasting the exact same writing prompt to six different writers. In which case yes, that's rude. Don't do that, please.
I'm fairly certain everyone on this list liked Band of Brothers or The Pacific at one point. Fair warning, they may have moved on to other fandoms, but I think most, if not all, still post BOB content from time to time!
Network: @hbowardaily - also has a discord server!
Visual Makers: @rebeccapearson @basilone @lupoteodoro @supervalcsi @onlyyouexisthere @tvserie-s-world @lyselkatz @fayestardust
OFC writers: @shoshiwrites @softguarnere @latibvles @noneedtoamputate (also new here!) @loveduringthewar @floydmtalbert / @arethosedustyjumpwings @upontherisers @sergeant-spoons/ @stolemyspoons @msmercury84 @coco-bean-1218
@mads-weasley @thoughpoppiesblow (semi-hiatus) @softspeirs / @dreamingundone (on hiatus but coming back!) @wexhappyxfew (also coming out of hiatus) @coraxaviary (on hiatus but has a big fic!)
In the HBOWar orbit: @almost-a-class-act @junojelli @bobparkhurst / @derry-rain @wereinadell @papersergeant-pencilsoldier @sharpshootershifty @sir-mr-dr-roe @lucky-bastards @aloraundomiel @cody-helix02 @churchkey @anthrobrat @general-taylor @majorhortonisonleaveinlondon @winnix85 @dcyllom
If you're looking for reader inserts or MLM fic, I'm sorry but I'm not the person to make recommendations on that. But this should be enough to get you started!

Landslide | Chapter 98 + EPILOGUE | A Home With You
"Home wasn't a set house, or a single town on a map. It was wherever the people who loved you were, whenever you were together. Not a place, but a moment, and then another, building on each other like bricks to create a solid shelter that you take with you for your entire life, wherever you may go."
― Sarah Dessen, What Happened To Goodbye
Joseph Toye was not someone to forget promises he made, however long ago they might be and he seemed pretty earnest with upholding a promise he made back to her in November of 1944. He wanted to take her out for a drink and even a dance. And, similarly to his parents, he was adamant about it, just like they were adamant about their tea and pillows and fresh eggs for breakfast.
Irene had let her borrow this beautiful maroon dress, with buttons along the front, with a pleated collar and a fluffy black scarf to wrap around her neck for the cold. Mrs. Toye told Natia that it felt like she was sending her Joe out on his first date and Natia had never laughed harder at the thought of little Joe going out on a first date as a 15 year old.

With bittersweet emotions, I present the final chapter and epilogue of Landslide. There is an extended thank you and author’s note in the epilogue, but thank you ALL, if you even took a minute to read a chapter or get interested in the utter joy that was Natia Filipska. I wasn’t sure when to post this, and just couldn’t contain my excitement anymore and decided, let’s post :) It was an honor to get to write this fic and to write Natia; I enjoyed so many aspects of this fic and will miss it so so much.
Natia will always be my fav badass agent :’) now, she finally has earned some deserved peace and quiet and I hope you all enjoying reading her final chapter + epilogue. THANK YOU ALL! and of course, happy reading (and here’s to the future!)!
644 pages, 2 and 1/2 years, a whole bunch of fun OCs, side plots, snarky remarks, wholesome friendships, and a fulfilling main OC later, Landslide is COMPLETE!

A Pact and a Friend
Tumblr media
Hello and Merry Christmas to @papersergeant-pencilsoldier from your @hbowardaily Secret Santa!
The prompt that intrigued me most was taking my OC from Band of Brothers, and putting her in The Pacific. I was apprehensive at the thought, but I had more fun than I anticipated with these two. I hope you enjoy <3
Summary: Melanie Davis, a shy but talented nurse from North Carolina, finds herself treating the wounded coming from the island of Peleliu. One in particular makes an impression.
Word Count: 2.2K
Warning(s): None
~~~
The hospital ship groaned through the Pacific Ocean, while the carnage across Peleliu raged on. Thankfully, the Marines on board could not hear the sounds of the battle this far out at sea. Melanie Davis looked over the deep blue at the island and wondered how many more boys - alive or otherwise - would make their way to this makeshift ward. How many more would perish for the sake of a line that never seemed to move? And how much more could she take of young men screaming and dying, crying for their mothers or God?
She closed her eyes and inhaled deeply, the salty sea air ironically soothing given the warfare that hummed through it. But for a moment, she could imagine she was back on the Carolina coast in the familiar days of her childhood vacations, before she had ever learned of war or pain.
She had not intended on remaining this long on deck, but she was still recovering from the last conversation she’d had with one of the Marines. He’d broken down in tears as he looked at the scars on his face, sure that his wife would no longer desire him. She did her best to assure him that true love went beyond anything that was only skin deep, and though he wasn’t totally consoled, he thanked her for trying.
The war had shown her more gruesome scenes than that, but something about it made her heart just ache so much worse than before. Yes, treating wounds was messy and ugly work, but the real challenge was not for the doctors and nurses who did their job and moved on. It was with the Marines and the people who loved them, who would have to navigate life with a man they didn’t recognize.
“Melanie?” The voice of her colleague, Bonnie, interrupted her thoughts. “You coming back?”
Melanie nodded and swallowed hard, tucking her frizzy curls behind her ear. The humidity of this part of the world certainly did nothing for her vanity either.
“Yes, I’ll be right there,” she replied.
With one last look at that dreadful island, she turned and followed Bonnie back to the ward.
Melanie made her rounds again. Thankfully, her shift was almost over. And while her cot on board wasn’t the most comfortable place she’d ever slept, she was looking forward to returning to it. But even that relief did not come as soon as she hoped. One of her patients asked for a card game, and she happily agreed, ignoring Bonnie, who shook her head in disbelief. Melanie took some solace that it meant she could sit down at least.
The game only lasted half an hour before he fell asleep. But the whole time she played, she felt the patient in the next bed’s eyes on her. His glance kept floating between her and the book in his hand. She kept her focus resolutely on her card game. When it was over, and she collected the cards to return them to her box, she faced him.
“Can I get your anything?” she asked politely.
He smiled, and she observed that he had a kind - albeit bruised - face beneath his mop of dark curls. But his eyes betrayed his expression. It was the same look she had seen on every man who came through here. Eyes that saw things that were no longer in front of them, but staring as if it was just a hundred yards away.
“Isn’t your shift over?” he returned.
“I don’t mind,” she assured him. “What do you-”
“I’ve seen you around,” he said. “You do this a lot, huh?”
“Do what?” she questioned, mouth turning down.
“Stay after and play cards and read aloud and all that,” he explained.
“I was always taught nursing is more than giving shots and taking vitals,” she answered. “And I never want you men to feel like you aren’t really cared for.”
His muscles seemed to ease further into his pillows. “What’s your name?”
“Melanie,” she told him.
He blinked, and she knew what surprised him since his eyes flicked to the lieutenant insignia on her collar.
“I prefer to be on a first name basis with patients,” she said. “I’m not your officer, not really.”
“That’s refreshing,” he smiled again. “I’m Bob. Bob Leckie.”
“Nice to meet you,” she said.
“Where are you from, Melanie?” he pressed.
“Mount Airy, North Carolina,” she told him.
“Damn, I thought it was Georgia,” he sighed.
“Georgia?” she blinked. “Why?”
“Because you talk like Scarlett O’Hara,” he replied through a chuckle.
“Oh, how you do run on,” she replied, waving a dismissive hand. He raised a smug eyebrow and she rolled her eyes. “Alright, I heard it.”
He chuckled again. “You married?”
She folded her arms across her chest. “Have you been sent here by my mother?”
At that, he outright laughed. “I’ll take that as a no.”
“You’d be correct,” she confirmed, holding up her bare left hand for extra emphasis. “What about you?”
“Nope,” he answered, shaking his head, and he too held up his left hand.
“Many men don’t wear a ring,” she pointed out.
“Yeah, but that’s sort of unfair, don’t you think?” he returned.
She shrugged. “Depends on who you ask.”
“I’m asking you.”
“Well, personally, it wouldn’t bother me either way,” she said. “If the person I end up marrying wants a ring, he may have one, and if he doesn’t, so be it.”
“You’re awfully diplomatic,” he said.
“What’s the matter with that?” she wondered.
“Nothing, I guess,” he said. “Have you ever considered politics?”
She chuckled. “Don’t be silly.”
A beat passed, and Melanie realized it had been a long time since she’d laughed. There had been nothing but tragedy. Even patients telling her about their personal lives managed to break her heart. She never had this sort of casual back and forth that truly let her forget, at least for a moment. She pointed to his book.
“Any good?” she asked.
He shrugged. “I guess so. It’s hard to focus.”
She picked up his chart and scanned it, finding quickly the cause of that was his concussion. With a nod, she set it back down.
“Not surprising, given the circumstances,” she said. “Would you like me to read it to you?”
“Actually,” he said, looking bashful for the first time since their conversation began. “I’ve just needed someone to talk to about…anything other than the obvious.”
 She wondered if he could read minds somehow. Or hearts, even. He had so clearly voiced exactly what she needed as well.
“Alright,” she agreed, taking a seat beside his outstretched legs. “I’ll be the friend you talk to about anything other than the war.”
He offered his hand and they shook on it. Across his knuckles were more scabs and bruises, so she handled it gently. He smiled again.
“So, what kind of nursing did you do before?” he wondered.
“I worked on the maternity ward,” she told him.
“You liked it?”
“I loved it!” she said. “The happiest days are when babies come.”
“I’d argue the happiest days are when they’re made, but to each their own,” he returned.
“Oh, my!” she gasped. Her cheeks got warm and she looked at her hands folded neatly in her lap.
He grinned, mischief in his eyes. “Have I embarrassed you?”
“Only a little,” she returned honestly, and cleared her throat before changing the subject. “Um, what did you do back home?”
“I was a reporter for a local newspaper,” he told her. “I wrote about sports.”
“Any favorites?” she wondered.
“I have an affinity for baseball,” he said.
“Did you ever play?” she continued.
“No, I don’t have the discipline,” he joked.
“Well, surely you must have some to be a writer,” she insisted.
“Writing itself is a discipline, those who practice it actually have very little,” he replied.
She smiled. “You’re mighty clever, Bob.”
“And you are very sweet, Melanie,” he returned.
She lost track of how much time she spent there with him, but it must have been hours. More and more patients succumbed to slumber after they’d been fed, so Melanie realized it must be nearing evening. The room had gotten darker too without her noticing. But Bob was so engaging. He was smart, witty, and creative. He told Melanie about a girl back home named Vera, who he hoped to see again. He spoke little of his parents, becoming withdrawn when they came up. He listened well when she spoke of her humble upbringing in the Carolina foothills, nodding with sympathy when she expressed her own complicated relationship with her mother, though she avoided details.
The conversation came to a stop when she let out a yawn in spite of herself.
“Tired?” he asked.
“A bit,” she admitted.
He jerked his head toward the exit. “Go on and get some sleep.”
“Are you sure?” she asked.
“Yeah, I’d hardly be a friend if I didn’t let you get your rest,” he said. “And it’s not like I’m going anywhere.”
“Very well,” she agreed with a smile. “Same time tomorrow?”
“Yeah, but maybe see if you can get us a table by the window next time,” he joked.
She giggled. “Good night, Bob.”
“Night, Melanie.”
She retired to bed. But every day, for a whole week, she sat with him after her shift was done and they chatted. About anything and everything - except the war. They did not ask why the other enlisted or if they had any loved ones they worried about. They didn’t discuss plans for post war life. Melanie was only permitted to even ask about his wounds while she was on duty. Otherwise, it was strictly the business of life outside of war. They talked about books, movies, music, and religion. She frequently felt he was too smart for her, as he’d drop in deeply philosophical remarks throughout, but he never condescended, either. Melanie began to look forward to her talks with Bob Leckie, as it was her only reprieve from everything around her.
 After the week, Melanie took her usual seat at the foot of his bed, a grin on her face that made him raise a quizzical brow.
“May I break our pact to tell you some very good news?” she asked.
He seemed hesitant. “Well, the saying goes that no news is good news.”
“You can’t honestly believe that in your profession, can you?” she returned.
“Got me there,” he conceded. “But I am going to ask for something in return.”
“What’s that?” she wondered.
“You know what I want,” he told her.
She froze. Her accent was a frequent topic of their conversations, mainly because he continually compared her to the famous southern belle of Gone With the Wind. He’d already asked this of her a couple of times.
“Oh, come on now, Bob, you -”
“It’s the only price I’ll accept for breaking the pact,” he cut across her.
She resisted the urge to stamp her foot. “Very well, I’ll do it.”
“Excellent!” he said victoriously. “Now, what’s this good news?”
It was too good to continue being cross with him, so she offered another pleasant smile.
“You’re going home,” she told him. “You’ve been approved to return to the States.”
His mouth fell slightly agape as the breath left his lungs. He cut his gaze away from her and down to his lap, where his book had landed after sliding out of his grasp. Slowly, he toyed with the edges of the pages. This wasn’t at all how Melanie had pictured this going.
“I’m sorry, Bob,” she said. “I hope I haven’t upset you.”
“No,” he replied quickly. “No, not at all, it’s just…I can hardly believe it.”
However much they pretended, Bob was not an exception to the other men who came through the hospital. He was one of many, who Melanie already knew would be returning almost unrecognizable to the people from his life before. He was not disfigured in his face like the man who was afraid to go home to his wife. Bob was scarred in his soul. And he had clearly anticipated further maiming.
“Do you need a moment alone?” she offered.
He shook his head, clarity returning to his eyes. “No, no, I’m alright.” After a beat, he smirked at her. “I still need my payment.”
“Oh, gracious -”
“You promised!”
Ignoring the flush rising in her cheeks, she sat down, and took Bob’s hand, shooting him a desperate look. He snickered.
“Oh, Rhett,” she sighed dramatically. “If you should go - where shall I go? What shall I do?”
Bob looked back at her sternly, doing his best Clark Gable. “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”
They shared a laugh and he patted her hand.
“Thanks, Melanie,” he said.
“You’re welcome,” she replied.
He cleared his throat, looking forlorn again. She only tilted her head to the side, shooting him a curious glance, which he picked up on.
“You should know, I very much give a damn about you,” he told her. “May I write to you when I get home?”
“I’d like that,” she said with a smile and a nod. “I have enjoyed you so.”
He gave her hand a squeeze. It was true he was returning home with scars and heartache. But he was also walking away with a rather unexpected friend.
Hey! If you're still doing the 5 sentence prompts, 31. Flowers - for Marian Singer ;) 💜 please!
Hey Kat, thanks so much for the ask! I hope you like this 💙
Tumblr media
The edelweiss flower Georgia had given her had long since shriveled up and died, but Marian still held on to it. The kid had brought it back from God knows where, and Marian felt that she ought to keep it with her as an act of loyalty. So, here she was in terrible, rainy Holland, with a dead a flower, a dead officer, and even more trouble on the horizon if Montgomery’s plan didn’t start working soon.
top 5 the Pacific characters and top 5 scenes? :)
Thank you! ❤️ I really don’t think the top 5 of characters is gonna contain a surprise, but.. the scenes one is embarrassing. It really is. I’m going to just.. quietly shrink back into the corner as y’all laugh at me.
Top 5 The Pacific characters
John Basilone (did you expect anyone else? did you? hahahahaha I am the one sitting here going LOVE JOHN BASILONE YOU COWARDS on repeat indefinitely and I will not stop my love for this man is relentless I have no dignity left in my body)
HOOS!! (I scream, top of my lungs, in exactly the way one should scream about Hoosier. if you don’t love him then what are you even doing, please love yourself and give yourself the care and affection you deserve by investing in this salty bastard’s wellbeing)
Andy Haldane (if I were to hashtag this man, he’d be #husbandmaterial and that’s that on that. I would follow him anywhere in the world I’m so soft for him)
Eddie Jones (.. where one goes, the other.. you got it. I can’t not name Eddie, he’s a sweetheart and his reactions give me life. one of the most capable lieutenants you’ll ever see, one of the most accidentally intimidating men in the world)
Lena Riggi (I, too, would fall in love with her. smart, capable, independent, cute as heck, keeps you on your toes -- what’s not to love??)
Top 5 The Pacific scenes
John almost getting into that bar fight while drink-mixing like a pro to honor Manny’s passing (it’s the epitome of his character, enjoying life to the fullest but also always ready to throw hands -- if you need to understand why I love him this much, watch that scene again and pay really close attention to his non-verbal stuff)
John -- yes, again -- going out golfing and getting war flashbacks (it’s the finest depiction of how subtle PTSD can be, how it can just sneak up on you when you’re in the middle of something else, how utterly displaced John was back home and how cruel it was to take him home like that and expect him to be okay)
John (I SWEAR THIS IS THE LAST ONE) doing the most at Guadalcanal and just.. essentially snapping into that battle frenzy and gaining some kind of preternatural calm that lets him do exactly what’s needed at the moment it’s needed (it’s so good and it’s done so well, that exhaustion at war with what needs doing and that inner peace in the middle of all that chaos)
THE TANK SCENE THE TANK SCENE THE TANK SCENE (do I need to explain myself no I do not it is the biggest moment of “holy shit these guys are insane in the best way” in the entirety of HBO War shows and not a day goes by when I don’t think about Andy and Eddie stopping a tank)
“You are ugly, I want Hoosier” followed by “take a number” (the flirting! the looks! the HCo stupidity on full display! the way this scene evolves into them singing happy birthday to Sid! the cuteness and softness please!)
✨ Robert “Rosie” Rosenthal ✨
“We’re here to fight the monsters, Croz. Yeah. And, yeah– Yeah, that’s made us do some tough things… but-but we had to. There’s no other way. The things these people are capable of… No, they got it coming. Trust me. They got it coming.”
Hello again! Couldn’t help but drawing this beautiful soul, one of the best (if not the best) characters of Masters of the Air.
Kinda like this one, but the shadows on the reference photo were a bit odd so it wasn’t that easy doing the shades… especially the mouth/moustache area, as you can see it came out a little weird. But anyway, hope you like it! 💛
1, 9 and 10 for the top gun ask game :) (also, it's been a while, I hope you're doing well!)
Omg how are you???
1. Who’s your favorite character & why are they your fave?
Are you ready for this? Are you ready?
It's Amelia - Penny's daughter.
I think she serves as a good barometer of how much Mav has changed as a person and grown up - not just because she sort of forces him to confront the passage of time, but that he deals with her, a thirteen year old girl, as someone who's worthy of time and attention and a question about her schoolwork, not just a 'So where's your mom' and a short brushoff. Don't get me wrong - it's a little awkward. But he's trying. He gives Penny and her daughter space to have their conversation about the boat. And she lays out the LAW after he jumps out that window, and Mav is now at a point in his life where he can listen to something like that.
What’s your favorite scene in either movie?
I saved you life!
I SAVED YOUR LIFE! That's the whole point. What the hell were you even thinking?
You taught me not to think!
And the '…goddamnit so I did' is just - great. This movie is a comedy.
Favorite part of the soundtrack from either movie?
The Anthem from the original soundtrack has been stuck in my head all week.
Landslide | Chapter 97 | In His Arms
" I don't want to lose you. I can't imagine ever feeling this strongly about anything or anybody ever again. This was unexpected, my soul's connection to you. You stole my loneliness. No one knows that I was wishing for you, a thief, to enter my house of autonomy, that I had locked my doors, but my windows were open, hoping, but not believing you would enter."
― Douglas Coupland
The first heavy snowfall of the year was finally hitting Philadelphia. She didn't think that as if she were a local; the headlines of the newspaper store she passed read it across the top line. She had only just gotten off the boat into the city, noticing the white flurries that fell from the sky and blanketed the ground, as well as the Christmas decorations that paraded off of city street corners and buildings, twinkling lights that glowed amongst the clouded and dreary, gray sky, and the bitter chill that carefully wrapped itself around her body and made her feel horrendously cold.
Natia didn't think she'd be in America for Christmas; by any stretch. One week had turned into two back in May 1945, and by two months, it had turned into being there day by day through August and into September and through to December.
Six Sentence Sunday
Wow, it's been a minute since I posted damn near anything here. I've missed tumblr but haven't had any sort of capacity for it. Today, however, two of my faves passed Six Sentence Sunday along, so thank you @realhunterswearplaid and @thrillingdetectivetales for pulling me out of a funk I had going. These six sentences are completely out of context, but belong to this darned WIP I've been working on for what has felt like FOREVER. It's the nagging fix-it sequel to Our Hearts Were Lonely Hunters
“You should elevate this,” he joked, pulling Gene's casted arm onto his chest as he settled back in and got comfortable.
Babe woke the next morning with what felt like a bruise on his collarbone from Gene’s arm cast shifting against him in the night.
Worth it his brain chided, as he came to enough to also feel the solid warmth of Gene next to him. A cascade of similar images, of waking up with Gene wrapped around him, washed through him. The images were five years old at that point, a different year and a different bed, but then time collapsed and they were here and he was there and he suddenly couldn’t remember anything in the interim of then and now, overwhelmed as he was with contentment at the feeling of being needed and needing someone, of laying like that in warm sunlight and cold winter mornings.
Home his heart beckoned back, flopping over like the puppy his dad had brought home for Ma that one Christmas hoping to get out of some fight he couldn’t remember.
I should tag people... ummm... @churchkey @thoughpoppiesblow @papersergeant-pencilsoldier @vintagelavenderskies @were-supposed-to-be-surrounded
