LENNON ITEMS RECOVERED: A recording of a 1965 Beatles concert was among more than 100 items stolen from Yoko Ono in 2006 that have been recovered in Germany, the Associated Press reports.
A pair of Lennon’s granny glasses; handwritten lyrics for “I’m the Greatest” and “(Just Like) Starting Over;” and diaries, including an entry made just hours before Lennon’s Dec. 8, 1980, murder were also recovered. Ono verified the items’ authenticity.
”(Ono) was very emotional and we noticed clearly how much these things mean to her and how happy she would be to have them back,“ prosecutor Susann Wettley told the AP.

The Vinyl of the Day is ‘Red Octopus’ by Jefferson Starship, 1975. In their previous incarnation as Jefferson Airplane, the band was one of the leaders of the psychedelic music scene of the 60s, becoming one of the most popular bands in the country and earning lead singer Grace Slick a position as one of the most prominent female rock musicians of her time. BUT after the 70s hit, the various shifting groups that Slick and Paul Kantner had been recording with as Jefferson Airplane dissolved in the early 1970s and the return of Jefferson Airplane founder Marty Balin, the new group ‘Jefferson Starship’ began. The group decided to create a much more commercialized sound which was a total contrast to their past works, paving the musical direction of their next two albums. Certified double platinum by RIAA in 1995, ‘Red Octopus’ is the best-selling album by any incarnation of Jefferson Airplane and its spin-off groups.
There's no denying that Red Octopus is one of the most successful commercial albums ever produced by a previously counterculture band. On this second official release of Jefferson Starship, Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, Marty Balin and company boldly toss off the last vestiges of the Jefferson Airplane era and stride whole-heartedly into the world of mid-70s corporate rock. And Red Octopus manages to achieve that rare intersection of broad commercial appeal and quality. What song is more symbolic of an era than Miracles? Perhaps only the reconstituted Fleetwood Mac of the early Buckingham-Nicks era comes as close to commercially evoking the mid-70s spirit of album oriented rock radio. As blatantly commercial the appeal of Miracles is, I still like it. The line "I had a taste of the real world (just a drop of it), when I went down on you girl" was one of the most daringly suggestive lines of the day and also one of the most pointedly passionate. It still sounds that way today and the full version of Miracles is a song of which I never tire. By and large, the rest of Red Octopus is a very enjoyable album. Never has Grace Slick's voice rang out with more confidence and authority. In addition to Miracles, my favorites are Fast Buck Freddy, Al Garimasu, Play On Love, I Want To See Another World, and the instrumental Sandalphon which is briefly evocative of Procol Harum. The play of Papa John Creech and the musicality of Pete Sears add much to the aural appeal of Red Octopus.
If I had to recommend one album by Jefferson Starship, Red Octopus is the one to which I give an enthusiastic recommendation - it constitutes the apex of creativity for Jefferson Starship as a band.
AllMusic Review by William Ruhlmann
Technically speaking, Red Octopus was the first album credited to Jefferson Starship, though practically the same lineup made Dragon Fly, credited to Grace Slick/Paul Kantner/Jefferson Starship. The difference, however, was crucial: Marty Balin was once again a fully integrated bandmember, writing or co-writing five of the ten tracks. And there can be little doubt that it was Balin's irresistible ballad "Miracles," the biggest hit single in the Jefferson Whatever catalog, that propelled Red Octopus to the top of the charts, the only Jefferson album to chart that high and the best-selling album in their collective lives. This must have been sweet vindication for Balin, who founded Jefferson Airplane but then drifted away from the group as it veered away from his musical vision. Now, the collective was incorporating his taste without quite integrating it -- "Miracles," with its strings and sax solo by nonband member Irv Cox, was hardly a characteristic Airplane/Starship track. But then, neither exactly was Papa John Creach's showcase, "Git Fiddler," or bassist Pete Sears' instrumental "Sandalphon," which sounded like something from an early Procol Harum album. Slick has three strong songs, among them the second single "Play on Love." Like Dragon Fly, Red Octopus reflected a multiplicity of musical tastes; there were ten credited songwriters, seven of whom were in the band. If there is any consistency in this material, it is in subject matter (love songs). The album is more ballad-heavy and melodic than the Airplane albums, which made it more accessible to the broader audience it reached, though "Sweeter Than Honey" is as tough a rocker as the band ever played.

PROMISE OF THE NEIL: Promise of the Real will be back in the road with Neil Young in 2018 and the partnership between Young and Willie Nelson’s sons Lukas and Micah has also resulted in a new studio album “that’s coming out sometime soon,” Lukas Nelson told the American-Statesman of Austin.
“And we’re going to go on tour with Neil, so next year is going to be crazy,” he said. “Neil’s our priority; we’ll wipe out the whole summer for him.”
Young has played only one show in 2017, a gig with POTR at Farm Aid; he and the band released the single “Children of Destiny” in June.
RADIATORS HEATING BACK UP:The Radiators, who disbanded in 2011 save for nearly annual reunion shows, are in the studio, guitarist Dave Malone said on Facebook.
“I’m pretty sure me and the boys are recording a new Radiators record,” he wrote. “I’m also pretty sure that it’s going to be called Welcome to the Monkey House. Whoo-eee!!!!”
HELLO TO A FAREWELL TO KINGS: Rush plans a 40th-anniversary re-release of A Farewell Kings. Out Dec. 1, the four-disc set includes the original album remastered; Rush’s Feb. 20, 1978, concert in its entirety; covers of select album tracks by Dream Theater (“Xanadu”), Big Wreck (“Closer to the Heart”) and others; a previously unreleased studio outtake, “Cygnus X-2 Eh;” and promotional videos.
WHEN BLACK FRIDAY COMES: Record Story Day falls on Black Friday (Nov. 24) and will include exclusive releases from Ryan Adams, Tori Amos, Chuck Berry, the Byrds, Gary Clark Jr., Papa John Creech, Steve Earle, Jerry Garcia and Howard Wales, Janis Joplin, Paul McCartney, Willie Nelson, Iggy Pop, Queen, Yusuf/Cat Stevens, Utopia and Muddy Waters among others.
