Thoughts on best ww2 tank and why? (Can pick separately for Early/Mid/Late War etc if no breakout contender) (Pic unrelated)

Hm. Well, that's definitely a question. I will break it down by period of the war, just to pad the post and give myself the chance to prattle on like a pretentious ass for a little bit longer.

Early war, I'm going to say that the best tank was the Czech (but co-opted by the Germans) ČKD LT vz. 38, which is more commonly known by its name in German service, the Pz.Kpfw 38(t). It's a fantastically capable light tank, and can outperform other early war tanks in nearly every metric. Its' only real competition is the German Panzer III, and the Czech design is simply much less complex and far more reliable than the panzer.

Late war, I'm going to say the British Centurion, and it's a fairly easy pick. For 1945, the Centurion was revolutionary, widely recognized today as the first MBT, and would sit at the forefront of nearly a century of armor design and implementation.

Mid-war is where it might get controversial. To me, the best tank of the mid-war is the Sherman, and it's not even close. Every other tank is fighting for second place. It's too easy to work on, too easily mass-produced, too survivable, too tactically flexible, and too generally capable of a medium tank for it to be anything else.

PQube announced that the Joy Brick-developed tank SRPG Panzer Knights has received an English text option on Steam. The publisher handled the English release, but the game was initially released in 2021.

Best Italian tank of WW2? Considering how little development they actually had, prototypes and drawing board designs are acceptable here?

Separate but related question, best non-major Axis and Allied powers tank of WW2? (i.e. outside of US, Britain, France, and China for the Allies, and outside of Germany, Italy, and Japan for the Axis)

Obscure tanks go!

As far as Italian tanks go, I'm going to say the Carro Armato p26/40. It was a fairly capable tank, with a capable drivetrain, a moderately good main gun, and pretty alright armor. It does kinda fall short though, because it only has a crew of 4, making the commander serve double duty, meaning that he doesn't have his whole head in the game.

Now, as to the second question:

My semi-cheat answer is the Czech ČKD LT vz. 38, which technically was adopted by the Germans as the Pz.Kpfw 38(t). It's a genuinely good tank, that I'd put up against any early-war light tank and give it decent odds.

My non-cheat answer is the Polish 9TP, which was a worthy competitor to the Panzer 1 and other tankettes, using a Bofors 37mm AT gun. It was a neat light tank, and I'd love to see how Polish rank development would have progressed, had it been allowed to progress to the planned 10TP and 14TP, instead of spending 40 years under the Soviet thumb.
