Sunday 30 December 2001 - train ride through Liechtenstein, the Ötztal and nonstop through Germany to Salzburg - Mozartkugel
Hi everyone! Grüezi mitenand! Hallo allerseits! Üdv mindenkinek! Ahoj všetci!
Twenty years ago today, I rode the train from Zurich HB to a not-yet-refurbished Salzburg Hbf which was built long before the intention of Austria to belong to the European Union, Schengen and Eurozone. My last visit to Salzburg was 20th and 21st June 1998, but this time would be the middle of winter.
I woke up about 5:30 AM, took a shower and by 6 AM, breakfast was ready. I ate some bread, cheese, sliced meat and drank coffee, just enough to last until suppertime. After I checked out from the hostel, I had to walk to the Besenrainstrasse bus stop, located at the indoor swimming pool Tannenrauch, because the current bus stop at Mutschellenstrasse and Tannenrauchstrasse, which is the current location of the School for Children with Physical and Multiple Disabilities, built years later, did not yet exist. There was snow on the ground as well as sleet. I had my camera on, and noticed a difference between snow and sleet. The individual snowflakes appeared a bit greyish in comparison to the sleet which was as white as white could be. The bus came and took me one stop to Morgental, and then it was a matter of crossing two streets to the tram stop for line 7 to the HB.
When I arrived at the HB station, it would not be until 9 AM when the ÖBB Korridorzug (corridor train using a foreign country but without stops) would depart for Salzburg and Vienna. I walked around the southeast part of HB closest to the Limmat, and took some photos of the Walchebrücke, the Limmat and Neumühlequai. About 8:40 AM I went to the platform where the train was to depart from, and I boarded the Panoramawagen on loan from SBB. I was on the right side. At 9 AM, the train departed. It travelled along Lake Zürich but not through the Zimmerberg Base Tunnel, as it did not exist then. It passed by Thalwil, Pfäffikon SZ, Ziegelbrücke GL, and Mels SG before making a loop following the Sargans SG station. The loop was meant to eliminate the need to change direction at that particular station. Also the section between Zürich HB and Sargans was the same section that I rode on Monday 11th September 2000, and farther afield to Chur GR. The train went along the loop to Buchs SG and followed the Rhine river. Across the Rhine was the Principality of Liechtenstein. I recognized the Gagoz bridge that on 11th September 2000 that I crossed by bus from Wartau SG to Balzers in Liechtenstein. A few minutes later, the train stopped at Buchs SG. At Buchs SG, the train would change direction and the Austrian customs guards would be ready to inspect passports. I received a Schengen stamp of Buchs-Sargans. Already Austria was a Schengen member but the reason that the customs were not performed at the following station of Feldkirch (Vorarlberg), was that the rails in Liechtenstein were already owned by ÖBB and at some stage, Liechtenstein had a customs union with Austria before it switched to one with Switzerland.
After the train left Buchs SG, it crossed the Rhine into Liechtenstein. I took some video of crossing the bridge, and although it was cold outside, the sky was mostly clear and sunny. The train passed through Schaan, the ÖBB stop for Vaduz. Nendeln was the last stop in Liechtenstein before crossing into Austria at Feldkirch. For the rest of the journey, I would be on the left side of the train. The train stopped also in Bludenz, St. Anton am Arlberg after crossing into Tirol, Ötztal, Innsbruck Westbahnhof and Innsbruck Hbf before going north. The train stopped for ten minutes in Innsbruck before heading north to Kufstein. After Kufstein and before Salzburg Hbf, there would be no stops. This is because this train was not scheduled to stop at Fieberbrunn or Hallein, which are much slower routes than between Rosenheim and Freilassing, which is relatively flat and straight by comparison. In February 2012 I would make a similar journey, only from Zürich HB to Innsbruck Hbf.
About 3:30 PM the train arrived in the as-yet unrefurbished Salzburg Hbf. The sun was about to set. The border crossing that I remember from June 1997, where trains from Germany would terminate, had since December 1997 been disestablished and was scheduled for eventual demolition. I needed a bus pass, so I bought the 72-hour tourist card called the Salzburg Card which would expire about 3:45 PM on Wednesday 2nd January 2002. I could not pay for it in Euro, so I had to pay for it in Austrian Schilling. I took my luggage to the bus station just outside the railway station, and found the trolleybus line 51 that would go to Polizeidirektion along Alpenstraße. The stop I needed would be at Egger-Lienz-Straße. I remember at that stop from 1998, that there was a Julius Meinl coffee shop, with its controversial logo. I checked into the Eduard Heinrich Haus which is the main hostel for Salzburg and is a member of the Austrian YHA affiliate, so my membership card allowed me a discount on the three night accommodation. I had a bunk bed in a room for six people - did the other five ever show up? I think the entire time I was there, I was the only one.
I took a nap, and I think I ate supper at the hostel for an extra fee. Then I took the bus line 51 from the Egger Lienz Straße to downtown. While I waited for the bus, the traffic signal would have a bell go off each time the light would turn green for vehicular traffic crossing Alpenstraße. And there was much slushy snow all around. The bus took me past the district and state courts to Altstadt at the Mozartsteg, a pedestrian bridge across the Salzach river that connected with Mozartplatz and the Residenzplatz. I walked along the Judengasse, Rathausplatz and Getreidegasse to Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz. I noticed at the Salzburger Sparkasse at Alter Markt, the sign for the countdown to the start of the Euro, was one day and four hours, so it must have been about 8 PM local time. Also I noticed the Mozart Geburtshaus and made a point to visit the next day.
After Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz, I returned to Mozartplatz along the Universitätsplatz. Somewhere I bought myself a couple of the famous Mozartkugel. The Mozartkugel were praline, marzipan and pistachio in a dark chocolate sphere. I bit into one, and was able to see the layers. Unfortunately my camera could not get the colors quite as distinctly as the lighting was not so good. I went to the Mozartplatz and watched people ice skate. The DJ was playing music, among which included "Blond" by Rainhard Fendrich and "Super Trouper" cover version by the A-Teens, not ABBA.
About 10 PM I took the trolleybus line 51 back to Egger-Lienz-Straße, and walked to the hostel. I listened to some music before going to sleep. No one ever came into the room, so I guess the other guests just had not managed to arrive that night.
Tomorrow, last shopping day with Schilling, the Mozart houses, view from the castle and a snowy afternoon. And Euro starter kits for sale after 10 PM. The long way home on foot.
Hope you will join in tomorrow’s adventure!
Ich hoffe, Ihr nehmt am morgigen Abenteuer teil!
Remélem, csatlakozol a holnapi kalandhoz!
Dúfam, že sa zapojíte do zajtrajšieho dobrodružstva!
