The Rabbit, The Rat, and the Hog (Chapter 5) - Delicate Handywork

I guess I just can’t stop my creativity with this fic! Chapter 5 is a bit shorter than the rest, but I think it ended on a pretty good note! Chapter 6 coming soon! :)

The warming light of the sun filled the Outback, bringing life to the otherwise destroyed and destruction ridden wasteland. There was no structures or buildings as far as the eye could see, it was an abandoned desert wasteland. The only movement stemming from a chopper motorcycle that swiftly crossed the land. Roadhog had his destination set, and with Junkertown nearly a hundred miles behind him, he was able to slow down his speed to conserve fuel, and make the drive a little less stressful, and more relaxing. He had told his dumb partner it was not a wise idea to intervene in the aftermath of the mech fight, but did Junkrat ever listen to him? Hell no. All Roadhog could do was watch as Junkrat launched himself from the rooftop and down onto the ground below, putting himself between D.Va and Slayer. Roadhog was not wrong in his prediction that things would go south, and now Jamison had a severely injured side, and they had an unlikely and unwelcome guest. In light of her managing to get Junkrat to his motorcycle and keep him alive, Roadhog took pity on the girl and allowed her to escape Junkertown with the duo. Roadhog was not normally one to take pity, as he was the more cold and distant, but the girl managed to keep Junkrat alive, meaning that the split half of his treasure promised by the latter was still safe.

Halfway through the journey out of Junkertown, Hana had fallen victim to pure exhaustion. Her arm was wrapped through a loop on the strap of Roadhog’s belt, and her body leaned forward against the much bulkier individual as she rested rather soundly, despite the bumps in the road and the roaring engine of their transport. It was both the pain of the bullets sprayed in her arm, as well as the loss of adrenaline that fueled her crash. There was no dream in her head, it was the hardest sleep that Hana had ever had, until she was very suddenly awoken from the dream by a sudden jolt from her body and the one that she was leaning on.

Roadhog had accidentally hit a rock, causing the motorcycle to jump and Hana to snap her head off of Roadhog’s back and into an awake and alert position. A few heavy pants left her chest, attempting to calm her racing heart as she looked on the right side of the motorcycle. She could not see any buildings or city outlines, who knew how far away she was from Sydney, from her friend Sumi. “Sumi…” Based on the positioning of the sun, there was no doubt it was around 10:00 or 11:00 in the afternoon, well beyond her shift change with Nari. She felt a sickening feeling rise in her gut, causing her to remove one of her arms from the strap she was holding onto. A sting of pain was sent through her arm and chest as it was the arm with the bullets that she had subconsciously moved. She shifted her head to the right, looking at the coagulated blood spots. She could barely see the shimmer of the bullets from the sunlight, and she felt herself get nauseous. She moved her arm back down, before her gaze caught sight of the other passenger.

Junkrat was still slouched awkwardly and no doubt uncomfortably in the side car, though it was apparent that he had shifted a little bit. Whether that was by his own free will or not, Hana did not know or care to find out. What she could make out from his form however, was the dried blood on his left side where the shotgun left a brutal wound. The blood from what she could see was dried, and from the shade of the sunlight she couldn’t see any buckshot left inside, but there was some in there no doubt about it. As D.Va continued to look over the form of the lanky male, taking in the large tire that was still mounted on his back, she recalled that he was the one who had intervened the night before, and it was thanks to him that she was not dead. Why did he do that… She thought to herself, a sudden change in the light of the background drawing her attention from him.

She looked to her right, and began to see the formation of a small mountain range they were approaching, it seemed to grow in a diagonal fashion as the chopper drew closer and closer, the sunlight eventually being blocked out by the mountain. Roadhog took a sudden turn inwards towards the mountain, heading straight towards what looked to be nothing but a solid wall. The sudden motion of the chopper caused a yelp from Hana, who gripped onto Roadhog’s body. The latter responded by shifting his head backwards to glance at her for a second, a chill running up her spine as if she had disturbed the devil himself. When his head turned back forward, she noticed something entirely different about the mountain. The rock gave way to a metallic structure, buried inside of the mountain side. It was indiscernible from a distance, perhaps designed in a way to conceal it on purpose. The closer they got to the building, the slower the chopper moved, Hana’s head was moving in all directions as she marveled at how the building was so well camouflaged.

Roadhog slowed the motorcycle to a crawl as they entered a large garage door, pulling inside of what looked to be an abandoned factory for omnic robots. There was scattered machinery all over the place, discarded weaponry and random assortments of metals, wiring, and paneling. It was so surreal that a place like this existed, as she was used to the technologically advanced South Korean government. When the vehicle stopped, Hana was the first to climb off, gripping onto her arm as she gazed around the building, there were various rooms dimly lit by the faint light coming from the sun, and she could see what appeared to be papers and blankets in one of them, when a sudden grunt caught her attention.

She flicked her head back over in an instant to see Roadhog lifting Junkrat out of the sidecar with ease, his body still motionless, but not silent as heavy groans of pain could be heard. She saw Roadhog motion his head toward a nearby room, where he was already moving towards, and Hana was quick to follow suit, keeping her voice down. Roadhog paused for a moment just outside of the room, turning to the small girl and speaking in his deep voice. “Unhook the tire and gun from his back.”

D.Va wasted no time, nodding her head as she moved forward, pulling on the tire for a moment as she tried to figure out where she could unhook it. She saw a small buckle just underneath Junkrat’s right arm, she carelessly pushed his arm out of the way and unfastened the buckle, the tire falling to the ground with a heavy thud. Her hands then moved to the frag launcher that was resting on another strap on his shoulder, carefully unhinging that one and setting it on the ground. Roadhog grunted in response to her work, a sign of approval from what she could tell as Roadhog took Junkrat inside of the darkened room, setting him down on a flat table. He moved to a nearby desk, or what Hana assumed was one in the darkness of the room, when suddenly a solar charged lamp was flicked on, illuminating what appeared to be a crude medical room.

The original purpose of the room was definitely not medical care, more like a station for hardwiring and delicate work with circuitry, as there was several tables close together, with destroyed computer monitors and various tools scattered about. She stepped inside of the room cautiously, watching as Roadhog turned on two more lamps in the room, giving it enough light for him to begin working. He seemed to coldly pull Junkrat’s left arm out of the way, examining the wound for a moment through his mask before moving to a desk. He grabbed a dirty toolbox and then moved back to Junkrat’s side, opening the box and exposing a series of medical tools and bandages. Looks like this was a common enough occurrence for them to need medical kits. Patiently, Roadhog examined the wound, grabbing a cloth and some sterilizing alcohol. “You might as well be useful, hold this light for me.” He commented gruffly, extending a hand with a small flashlight.

Hana nodded her head and moved forward, grabbing the flashlight from his hands and turning it on, focusing on the wound and allowing Roadhog to begin cleaning it to locate whatever buckshot could still be in there. She was used to injuries like this, having seen many of them in the early stages of the MEKA program in Korea before their reinforced hulls became a standard issue in all units to protect from injuries of this sort. She watched patiently as Roadhog wiped as much blood away from the wound as possible, illuminating a few pieces of buckshot. She carefully examined them herself, making sure to keep the flashlight still as Roadhog used a pair of small tweezers to begin removing the bullets.

The silence of the situation was enough to drive Hana crazy, thoughts going through her mind rapidly as she began to once again think of the consequences she now faced back in Korea for directly disobeying an order from her Captain. A sign of visible distress crossing her face as the minutes turned into an hour of delicate work on Junkrat’s injured side. She had to break the silence, it was driving her insane.

“You think he’ll be alright?”

“He’s survived two gangrened limbs, close quarter explosions, and misfires from his own arsenal, he’ll be fine.”

D.Va chuckled slightly to Roadhog’s straightforward answer, no doubt to her anymore that this was a routine thing for them. She watched again as Roadhog began to bandage his side, covering the worst part and leaving the outer rim exposed. She nodded her head in approval, he was delicate in his handy work, despite his large physique. It was when Mako moved his hand towards a random canister with a cross on it that she tilted her head slightly, she watched as he practically shoved it in Junkrat’s mouth, watching as the latter slowly inhaled whatever substance was in it. She raised a brow for a moment, as Roadhog removed the canister and tossed it over his shoulder, wiping his hands free and looking at her. “Let him rest, I’ll look at your arm.”

Toolbox in hand, he motioned for her to move out of the room, waving a hand towards her as she backed up, turning the flashlight off and leaving Junkrat in the dimly lit room. The two moving back to the opened warehouse as Roadhog motioned her towards a nearby assembly line. She obliged and climbed onto the metal surface, turning around to face him and lifting her arm up towards Roadhog. He took her small arm into his hand, using a fresh alcohol covered gauze to wipe away the dried blood from her wounds. She seethed in pain, hissing through her teeth as she struggled not to move, the alcohol was burning against the injured flesh. Roadhog said nothing, instead offering her another one of those strange canisters. “Breathe, it helps.”

She hesitated for a moment, but the pain was enough to make her listen. She grabbed the canister and placed the opening in her mouth, inhaling the strange gas inside. Hana felt immediately light headed, as it was not the most pleasant of scents, and yet the pain in her arm seemed to subside fairly quickly, allowing Roadhog to make quicker work of her injuries. A mere thirty minutes passed, letting Roadhog pull three bullets out of D.va’s arm, cleaning the impact sights, and wrapping them delicately with bandage to let them heal.

As Roadhog closed the toolbox and wiped his hands on his pants, Hana rubbed her injured arm for a moment, before speaking. “Thank you, for this...and for getting me out of there.”

She had no idea if her words would mean anything to him, and yet she still felt like she owed him a thank you, as he had both gotten her out of Junkertown, and also cleaned up her injured arm. He was silent for a moment, before nodding his head in response.

“You’re welcome.”

A soft smile crossed Hana’s lips as those words left his mouth, it was a relief that maybe he wasn’t as intimidating as he seemed.

Mako Rutledge grabbed the toolbox once more, motioning for Hana to follow him, as he made way towards a staircase. The stairs were wrought iron, and lead to a catwalk above the main and exposed factory floor. There were empty doorways from what Hana could see, and she followed silently behind Roadhog as he lead her to the second door down from the staircase. He motioned for her to head inside, and when she did she was greeted by a very peculiar sight.

The peculiar spring onion squid was a commonly known creature, used in all sorts of advertising across Asia, and she saw around half of the memorabilia in this very room. There were large and small plushies, some large enough to use as a pillow. She could also see a variety of other items not exclusively pachimaris. There were other plush figures, random assortments of candies, as well as scattered jewelry and valuable goods. As Hana looked at all of the items tossed crudely around the room, it gave her the sense this was their “treasure” room, since there was no organization to the piles of random items. Against a wall there was a futon mattress with an assortment of pillows and blankets surrounding it. “Get some rest, we all need it.” He commented, to which she bowed her head, thanking him politely in Korean and moving into the room. He responded by nodding his head before moving from the doorway and back down the staircase.

Hana waited for a few moments, examining some of the items in the room around her. She grabbed one of the smaller pachimaris, finding a price tag still attached to one of the tentacles of the cute little critter. Her eyes widened as she realized that most of, if not all, of the items she was surrounded by were stolen, and yet there he was letting her in the room with a bunch of stolen items without a worry. Maybe he did trust her after all, maybe he didn’t. She decided not to let her guard down too much as she moved to the futon across the way.

The room wasn’t large, probably originally used as an office space, as in the corner of the room there was a damaged office desk, lamp and computer monitor. She settled down on the futon, pulling one of the large and surprisingly fluffy blankets up towards her. She laid flat on her back, using a pillow with the pachimari logo to rest her head on. She moved her injured arm up on her torso, she stared upwards at the ceiling, the sunlight fairly bright, and yet not enough to keep her from closing her eyes, and falling into a much needed and more comforting sleep.

“Private Song is still nowhere to be found, am I correct, Private Chung?”

“Correct sir.”

Sumi addressed Captain Seo around 11:13 in the morning, following the failure of her to report for shift change.

“And the MEKA unit assigned to her is also missing?”

“Correct.”

“Do we know where the MEKA was last pinged in its location?”

Sumi motioned towards their new recruit, Nari and security officer Devon who were accompanying her in the interview from Captain Seo. Devon was the first to speak up, “We are using the computers now to calculate the journey of the MEKA, we should have the last pinged location in a few moments.” Devon was internally conflicted, he knew that this was a direct result of him allowing Hana to take her MEKA unit out of the frigate. How could he have been such a fool as to let his own feelings for the new recruit be used against him? It went directly against his own code of standards, and yet he still let Hana go. I can’t let them find out I was the one who let her go, I’ll be arrested alongside her for sure.

Nari was working on the holographic projectors aboard the briefing room on the South Korean frigate, watching a red blip on the map trek across the Australian outback. The two watching the screen carefully, before noticing a very concerning change in the icon on their projector, one that did not bode well for Hana Song.

“I’ve got her last known location, but...the news isn’t good, Captain.”

“What is it, initiate?”

“Her last ping was around a thousand kilometers from the omnium’s destruction sight, the Australian government intel we are using says she was inside of ‘Junkertown.’ Sir.”

Captain Seo’s form on the monitor remained stoic and unchanged, as it was apparent that Nari was unfinished with her news.
