Throughout all of that, I still believe we have it in us to be better. I believe LOVE triumphs over all those things. While our isolation and lack of normalcy can escalate our underlying discomforts, feelings of fear, and anxieties, I believe it can also bring out the best in us. We have to choose. It may be a minute by minute choice some days but we get to choose. Choose kindness over sarcasm. Choose optimism over cynicism. Choose to breathe deep. Choose love over all else. Love your neighbor. Self quarantine day 43. Day becomes night again. There’s no sense of time passage other than what’s happening outside myself as music projects are completed one by one. I go out sometimes and walk to the river to look at the grayish-green water as it passes by. It’s no different than the crimson blood in my veins pulsing with the beat of the universal rhythms of fluid dynamics. Earth. A planet that’s sighing with a brief reprieve from the crush of human progress and growth that has been rendered meaningless by nothing more than a virus which isn’t even a living thing like you or I. It’s just biological information and in this case, that information implies that we are not great at taking care of each other at all when it matters the most. Each chance we have the opportunity to choose public health over economic health, we choose economic health which is completely man made and has nothing to do with the natural world. I’ve yielded to the fact that things won’t be the same. I’ve gone through all the stages of grief for normalcy in my life. Acceptance isn’t failure where there is loss. Acceptance of loss slowly blurs into meaning. I debated posting this week’s #pandemicmood shirt because I ABSOLUTELY mean no disrespect to anyone. Doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, hospital housekeeping, the list goes on...y’all are definitely more tired than I am. But this shirt is for you too. You are frontline public health workers. Moms and dads turned homeschool educators, I see those bags under your eyes. Grocery store staff, I feel your bone deep weariness. Truckers, I can’t even imagine. Extroverts who are dying on the inside because you can’t hug your people...I get you.
