2017 TBR Tag

Thanks to @baldursgatekeeper for tagging me!

I have eight books I’d like to finish by the end of the year, which I think is ambitious but doable. I’m currently five books short of my reading challenge, but given I’m more than halfway through four books at the moment I don’t think I’ll have trouble completing it.

The books I’m currently reading are:

Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb. I need to return this one to the library in the next two days so it’s lucky I’m nearly done. I’m enjoying this more than I did Assassin’s Apprentice, and I think I’m a little in love with Kettricken, she’s an amazing character.

Dark Emu by Bruce Pascoe. I’m listening to Dark Emu as an audiobook. It’s a non-fiction book arguing that modern Australia’s perception of pre-invasion Aboriginal people as primitive hunter-gatherers is largely incorrect, and presenting evidence for much more settled and prosperous societies. I’m finding it really interesting, and the author is currently doing trials on the use of native Australian plants for large-scale food production.

Code of Silence by Colin Dillon. Another non-fiction book (that makes three this month, which is more than I’ve read all year). It presents the story of the career of Colin Dillon, who was the first Indigenous Australian to be a commissioned Police Inspector and whose bravery was vital to the inquiry into police corruption in Queensland in the 80s.

Shadowkings by Michael Cobley. This is a fantasy novel I got from a secondhand bookstore on a whim and I’m not impressed with it. I want to finish it since I’m more than halfway through, but it’s definitely very far down my list of priorities. 

As well as finishing those, I want to read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy by JRR Tolkien as part of @logarithmicpanda‘s readalong.

Since I’m rereading Lord of the Rings I thought I’d share this illustration my sister @craftyturtleart drew. Eowyn is one of my favorite characters in the trilogy and I can’t wait to get up to The Two Towers!

Finished Book One of The Fellowship of the Ring 😊If I manage to keep up my pace of two chapters a day I should get it finished by December 12th!

So I’ve decided to reread Lord of the Ring this december (2017) and people seemed enthusiastic so this is now a readalong! Because I’m lazy and assuming that everyone will have read it once already, the schedule is going to be pretty loose, with only a start and end date for each book. I intend to read the Silmarilion afterwards so there’ll be a tentative schedule for that, too! Also, optional movie nights ;D

I checked the estimated ridding length for each book and constructed a schedule assuming about 1h reading time per day. Here it is:

The Fellowship of the Ring: December 1st - December 12th

Movie Night: December 8th

The Two Towers: December 13th - December 22nd

Movie Night: December 22nd

The Return of the King: December 23rd - December 31st

Movie Night: December 29th

The Silmarilion: January 1st - January 10th

Movie night!

It’s December First here in New Zealand. So I started rereading Lord of the Rings as part of @logarithmicpanda‘s LotR Readalong.

So far I’ve read three chapters. It’s taking me slightly longer than usual to read, because it is quite heavy, so I don’t know if I’ll get Fellowship of the Rings finished by Dec 12th, but hopefully I’ll finish the trilogy by the end of summer. 

I’m enjoying it more than the first time I read it, probably because I was like 12 and it was the longest book I had ever read at that point, and also I’ve seen the movies about 90000 times by now so I’m picking up on references and quotes a lot better. 

One thing I do like so far that wasn’t in the movie, was that some of the dwarves (presumably the ones from the Hobbit) turned up to visit Bilbo again, which I liked. It was nice to know that his old friends still visited (and presumably ate him out of house and home). 

Another thing I had completely forgotten was that it was like 20 something years between Bilbo disappearing during his party and Frodo setting off on his journey. 

I also love how the elves are just really melodramatic and salty. It’s hilarious.

Hopefully I get through a bit more than three chapters tomorrow, because this book is LONG!

Looking forward to it! I hope I'll be able to keep up, I'm going to be doing prac work for uni for a lot of next month but I'll do my best. I was hoping to reread The Hobbit beforehand, but I don't think that's going to happen

Are you planning to stream the movies so everyone can watch together? I'd love to join in but I'm assuming most other people will be on the other side of the world from me so time zones could be tricky

My secret to being this far along is having nothing else to do haha. I’m currently watching my way through the Hobbit and LoTR with my baby sister who’s never seen them so I will probably end up doing a movie day today too 😊
