End of season FFL review 2022/23
The summer of 2022, we’d just had the world cup in Qatar and, hang on minute, that’s not right. Yes for the first time ever the World Cup wasnt held in the summer, it would be held in winter, as a result there would be a break in the season. A part A and a part B. This meant an earlier than normal start to the season and a later finish too. It would also mean fixture chaos, with teams playing 2 or even 3 games every 8 or 9 days. Players getting injured, rested and rotated would definitely impact FFL teams.
So who were the favourites? Back in May Colin Fenwick had smashed the world record score in winning the league by a mile. Our Grimsby Roma had very nearly done the double, but lost on a tie break six to Kieron Mullin, Would Kieron be a contender in the new season. Mark Kiszka won the Champions league last time, could he feature in the new season? The Hawk was very keen to get back to winning ways. The Knightrider returned to FFL, plus new boy Gareth Dyke. No Manè or Pogba this season, but new names like Haaland and Nunez. New managers too. Ronaldo was still in the Premiership, but only 3 managers picked him. Chelsea spent a fortune and Forest bought 20 odd players. No Matt Rushton this time, so his Champions league spot went to the manager who finished 13th last season, Andy Flanagan.
So in the unbelievable heat of 2022 record breaking summer FFL started. The first weekend saw Jesus and Arsenal shining. Ten Haag’s Man Utd got hammered by Brentford, while Nunez got sent off. Early leader was Jackie Knight.
Early September and Haaland was hammering the goals in at record breaking rate. Disco Lee Ritchie and Duncan Mackenzie were the top two. League Champion Colin Fenwick beat FA Cup winner Kieron Mullin by 1 point to win The FFL Bennett’s Shield. This was one of the few bright spots of what would become a disappointing season for our Grimsby Roma. VAR was once again making the headlines. All too often it felt like the joy was being sucked out of football. The whole country was rocked by the death of Queen Elizabeth the 2nd. Games were cancelled and people queued for hours and hours to see her laying in state. Well apart from Phil and Holly who jumped the queue. Unwise, but not illegal.
By October Disco was still top, but facing a challenge now from Chris Geoghegan. VAR made the headline again, this time when a power surge at Leeds caused it to shut down completely. Arsenal were top and clear, Haaland just kept scoring, Meanwhile Klopp kept on moaning, and he also got a red card. Things were going very badly for Ronaldo. Mark Taylor and Tappy were starting to regret picking him. Talking of very disappointing choices, UK Prime Minster Liz Trust was gone after only 45 days. It would be a season of sackings. Gerrard and Tuchel gone, lots more to come. After the first group stage of the champions league Senol, Kieron, Jon and Jamie were gone. Disco became the first manager to pass 100, The Hawk, Chris and Tappy challenging.
November and the FA Cup Legend Ronnie Radford sadly passed away. Meanwhile Ronaldo was interviewed by Piers Morgan. This time Ronnie didn’t hold back, attacking Man Utd and how he felt let down and ignored. He even texted me to moan that so few managers had picked him. He seemed to belittle recent league leader Disco Lee Ritchie. It was the beginning of the end for CR7 and FFL. By the World cup break Tappy was top, Disco 2nd, The Hawk 3rd and Pam Taylor 4th. That was it, the pause button pushed. Tappy was the Christmas number one in November.
Mark Kiszka narrowly beat Kieron to the World cup, as Argentina narrowly beat France.
When FFL finally returned it was Christmas. No more Ronaldo and lots of very tired and injured players. This would have a huge effect on FFL teams, subs would be more important than ever lots of penalty points.
The football world was saddened by the death of its greatest ever player. Pele was not just a great player, but also a global icon. In premiership Haaland continued to score, but Arsenal were top and clear. In the FFL Disco was top, with Pam Taylor, Tappy and The Hawk close by. More sad news was breaking, one of the stars of Football Italia, Gianluca Vialli died. There can’t be many football fans of my generation who didn’t get swept up by channel 4’s coverage of 90s Italian football. Luca was a major part of that. By the end of January Everton had sacked Lampard and not bought anyone in the January sales. Man city sold Cancelo. In fact several players left the premiership during the window. This along with the tiredness from the world cup and injuries meant lots of penalty points. This was going to be a very unpredictable and low scoring season. Mark Taylor was the new league leader. Could Mark win his first league title since 1804? I mean 1904 err 2004.
Early Febuary and my Friday night Chinese take away didn’t arrive, Apparently the firm had started using a form of balloon drone to deliver. Never did find out what happened to that balloon? Leeds sacked their manager, while new Everton manager Dyche saw his side beat Arsenal. The top of the FFL was taking a very Taylor theme. Mark top, Pam second and Paul 3rd, no sign of Ollie??? Oh there he is in the bottom 3 with Flynny and Robyn Stanney. In The champions league Andy Flanagan was flying into the semi finals, along with the Hawk. The final group games saw Michael Dymond and Mark Kiszka join them. In a season of sad football related deaths former World of Sport presenter Dickie Davis passed away. The terrible earthquake in Turkey and Syria killed tens of thousands including former Pemeirship player Christian Atsu. Chris Geoghegan was on cup run, beating Pam Taylor in round one, drawing league leader Mark in the second. Senol Durmush was also going well and into the 2nd round, where he would face The Hawk. By the end of the month the 3 Taylors were still at the top. March and Pam Taylor started to fall away, The Hawk now joined the top three with Mark and Paul. Manchester United won the league cup, beating Newcastle in the final. John Motson, the voice of FA Cup finals, world cups and Match of the day sadly passed away.
A week later and everything FFL changed. A truly terrible weekend for Mark Taylor (partly caused by Liverpool beating Man UTD 7 nil) saw him drop from top to 7th. More bad news as this was FA Cup second round weekend. Chris beat Mark by a record 33 points. New league leader Matt Wheeler was also through after hammering Paul Taylor. Disco beat Tappy by 1 point. The final game saw Senol Durmush draw with the Hawk. Senol would go on to win the replay. What followed was one of the most bizarre moments of the season. A tweet by Gary Lineker about the government’s immigration bill sent The BBC sports coverage into lockdown. He was taken off the air, as a result his colleagues went on strike. No football on 5Live, no presenters or commentary on Match of the day, all to Talk sport’s amusement. Freedom of speech became no talking at all, until an agreement was made. St Patricks day and Vieria was sacked at Palace. Palace would raid the retirement home and return Wroy as a possible saviour. The Hawk and Matt Wheeler were joint top, with Tappy, Paul, and Mark Taylor not far back. The bottom and of the table Robyn Stanney was 60 points adrift. My advice don’t let Boyfriend Jack help you with your team next season. Haaland just didn’t stop scoring. The Ivan Drago of football smashed 5 in Europe and 3 more in the FA cup. Unstoppable.
April and the sackings continued, Conte, Rodgers and Potter all gone. Lampard who had already been sacked by Everton was the new manager at Chelsea. £600 million of signings and several high profile managers, surely Lampard couldn’t make things any worse? The Hawk was the first manager to pass 200 points with a lead over Tappy, Mark Taylor and Matt Wheeler. The Champions league semi finals saw Andy Flanagan finally remove Mark Kiszka’s reign as champion. The Hawk beat Michael Dymond in the other semi. In the first leg of the final Andy took a 9 point lead.
Early May and Spurs sacked their caretaker manager and amazingly Lampard had made things even worse at Chelsea, while Wrexham Hollywood FC, with Deadpool and co in charge won promotion back into the football league. The Hawk was still top, but with strong challenges from Tappy and Mark Taylor, however with so many players missing they were struggling to field full teams. Mark in fact pulled the lead back to only 3 points. Not long ago The Hawk was looking at a treble, but now his lead was gone, out the FA cup and 9 points down in the champions league final. Chris Geoghegan’s cup run continued, beating Disco in the semi final at the Etihad, While Senol beat Matt Wheeler at Villa Park. Big Sam was back as the new Leeds Manager. Andy Flanagan won his first title. The first leg lead was enough to win the Champions league. The manager who only got in as first reserve due to Matt Rushton not entering, was victorious. With just the league left for the Hawk, he was 14 points ahead of Mark and 16 ahead of Tappy. Man City were on for the treble now
FA Cup final weekend saw Chris take an early lead, but Man City resting KDB brought points scoring subs into Senol’s team. In the end it was Turkish delight as Senol Durmush won his first FFL trophy since 2014. Man City won the league, with Haaland player of the season. The Hawk had a 26 point lead over the chasing pack of Matt, Senol, Andy and Mark going into the final premiership fixture weekend. Everton, Leicester and Leeds were fighting to avoid joining Southampton in relegation. Forest and their 30 signings had survived. Burnley Sheffield United and Luton were going up.
The final weekend of the Premiership, just these games and The FA Cup final left. The Hawk was top of the league and looking very good. A close run battle for the champions league spots. Everton had to endure 10 minutes of injury time to hold onto 3 points and premier league membership, just. So many players were rested, injured or suffering the effects of a very long season. Over half the league suffered pen points. Mark Taylor took full advantage of this and moved into second, but still 23 points behind the Hawk. Sally Sands moved into the champions league spots.
FA CUP final day, City going for the double and a chance at a treble against Utd. The Hawk was well clear at the top, but champions league spots were tight. City scored the fastest ever FA cup final goal. Utd strike back from a VAR penalty. In the end city won 2v1. The double in the bag and the champions league final to come.
So that’s it. Colin Hawkins won the FFL Title, Andy Flanagan the champions league and Senol Durmush the FA cup. Robyn Stanney the wooden spoon and gave birth on cup final day, congratulations. Mark Taylor got 2nd. Stally, Sally and our Grimsby Roma made the final champions league spots at the expense of Steve Tatham and Chris Geoghegan.
Thank you for being part of an incredible season, sometimes sad, sometimes crazy, sometimes very strange, but amazing.
Two final thoughts
Firstly, if Matt Rushton had entered this season, would he have won the Champions league?
Secondly, can anyone but Colin's win the league anymore?

Though most radio detectives were lone wolfs, there were a few pairs of sleuths who enjoyed wedded bliss while they solved crimes. Nick and Nora Charles of The Thin Man fame brought their adventures to radio, and listeners could enjoy the exploits of Pat and Jean Abbott. But no pair of married detectives had the radio longevity of a couple of amateurs who cracked cases on the air for over a decade - Mr. and Mrs. North - and their adventures first came to radio on December 30, 1942.
Like other radio crimefighters, the Norths sprang from the printed page, but their earliest appearances didn’t hint at the future in mystery that lay ahead. Writer and former crime reporter Richard Lockridge created the Norths (named, as the story goes, for the “North” in newspaper bridge columns) in comedy sketches for The New Yorker. It was Lockridge’s wife Frances who had the idea to introduce a criminal element to the stories, and husband and wife collaborated on The Norths Meet Murder, a 1940 novel. In it, book publisher Jerry and his wife Pam discover a dead body in the bathtub of a vacant apartment they’re planning to use for a party. The first novel set the tone - the Norths rarely go looking for trouble but almost always find it - and it introduced the supporting characters of Lt. Bill Weigand and Sgt. Aloysius Mullins, who often collaborated with the Norths and welcomed their assistance. The novel was a hit, and it led to 25 more mysteries penned by the Lockridges and starring the Norths.
The success of The Norths Meet Murder led to a Broadway adaptation in 1941 starring Peggy Conklin and Albert Hackett. It closed after 163 performances in the spring, and it inspired a film adaptation. MGM released Mr. and Mrs. North with William Post, Jr. as Jerry and radio comedy queen Gracie Allen as Pam. Audiences tended to prefer to see Allen with her actual husband, George Burns, and the film had a mild reception. For his part, Richard Lockridge didn’t care for Allen in the role, and called it “a triumph of miscasting.”
Despite the lukewarm reactions on Broadway and at the box office, an audition recording was prepared for a radio adaptation of Mr. and Mrs. North in 1941. Peggy Conklin recreated her stage role as Pam, and actor Carl Eastman played Jerry. On December 30, 1942, Mr. and Mrs. North premiered on NBC with Joseph Curtin and Alice Frost in the title roles. The first years of the show were sponsored by Jergens Lotion and Woodbury Cold Cream. By the program’s second year, it was drawing 20 million listeners a week. In 1946, it shared with Ellery Queen the Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Radio Drama. Curtin and Frost were radio veterans who could be heard all over the dial, and they had terrific chemistry as Jerry and Pam. They were supported in the series by Frank Lovejoy and Staats Cotsworth (among others) as Lt. Weigand.
The series switched networks in 1947, moving to CBS, and it picked up a new sponsor in Colgate-Palmolive. With the radio series still popular, CBS launched a television version in 1952. Fans could hear the Norths on radio and see them on television (played by Richard Denning and Barbara Britton) in the same week. The TV version ran until 1954, and CBS ultimately decided to bring their TV cast to radio. Denning and Britton assumed the roles of Jerry and Pam on the June 30, 1953 broadcast. True to form, that episode involved the Norths hunting through thrift shops for a sport coat that held valuable information in a pocket. Later episodes in the Denning/Britton years saw the mysteries turn darker and grittier. The lighter touch of the earlier episodes was gone, but the change would be short-lived. Mr. and Mrs. North signed off the airwaves on April 18, 1955. Their adventures continued in print until the passing of Frances Lockridge in 1963.
Unfortunately, despite the show’s long run, a relatively small number episodes survive. Fortunately, the Armed Forces Radio Service transcriptions have ensured some adventures of the Norths (including the episode on this week’s podcast) are around today. Fans can hear crimes solved with a light touch by two people who weren’t going to let a little thing like lack of training stop them from seeing justice done.

Urban Art Explosion
By Yvonne Boose
Poetry Girl Media
September 2nd, 2019
Aurora, Ill. – Weather conditions were cloudy, on the 1st day of September, but an explosion of sunshine happened, during the 6th annual On the Wall: Urban Arts Festival.

The Urban Arts Festival took place at Water Street Square, 65 S. Water St. and was hosted by Culture Stock and TBA (Them Bad Apples). This festival showcased numerous forms of art, which related to the hip hop culture.
Nicole Mullins, founder of Culture Stock, expressed how Culture Stock’s mission is to provide free events, for the community. She wanted to highlight something for the hip-hop culture. “A lot of times, hip-hop has a bad rap. You know, it's associated with gangs, drugs and all of these negative things but at the heart of hip-hop culture, it is the opposite,” she said. Mullins explains that hip-hop is about unity and building community.
When most people think of hip-hop, they may think of music but hip-hop encompasses much more. According to www.encyclopedia.com, hip-hop has four main components, rap music, break dancing, DJ-ing and graffiti art.
Not only did Culture Stock and TBA ensure that all of these components were covered, they threw in a few more sweet treats.
A car show featuring Aurora’s Street Addictionz Car Club, ladies from the 40+ Double Dutch Club and a hip-hop exercise company, Hip Hop Fit with Gene Hicks.
Abel Rosales, Sergeant of Arms of Street Additionz Car Club, 77 S. River St., explains why his club decided to showcase at this event. “Well you know, our cars are pretty artistic,” he said.
As Rosales showed off a ‘79 Cutlass Oldsmobile, ‘78 Impala, ’96 Toyota Camry and an ‘84 El Camino, he called over the president of the club, Rudy Yanez.

Yanez didn’t have much more to add but he wanted to point out that their club thrives for positivity in the community. He smiled pointing to a sign, “Like we say right here, cruising away from crime. Yeah, that’s our thing,” he added.
Juan Olivas, a spectator, says he mainly came to see the car show. He saw the event on Facebook and decided to bring his three daughters. He’s excited about seeing these types of artists because he doesn’t think the community gets to see them often. “This show introduces us to something different that we haven’t seen around here.”
Shantel Coleman, a member of the 40+ Double Dutch Club, shows off her double Dutch skills as she jumps effortlessly between the two alternating ropes. Coleman says, “I live double Dutch.” She recently joined the club in June and excitedly mentioned what this group is all about. “It’s just a group of 40 or over women reliving our childhood memories, playing hand games, double Dutch… just to get away from adulting.” The double Dutch club was ready to teach anyone who wanted to learn how to jump double Dutch. Coleman also mentions that the club’s founder Pam Robinson and other members of the club were featured on Windy City Live.

In addition to breakdancing, the festival also showcased another type of dance, hip hop dance.
Hip Hop Fit’s owner, Gene Hicks, demonstrated hip-hop fitness moves that are normally done at his gym, 10204 Werch Dr. #304 in Woodridge. Hicks says that it was fitting for him to come and represent because his fitness is all about hip-hop. “That’s what my business is all about promoting hip-hop through fitness,” he said.

Brandy Gilliam, a member of the P.O.B.U.M.S. Society, a local hip-hop group that performed, gave his thoughts on the event.
Gilliam reinforced why it is so important to have events in Aurora that showcase diversity.
“It’s a good way to bring the community together. We have Blacks, Whites, Puerto Ricans, Mexicans so everything is good.” He also emphasized that the minority community has to be the ones who organize these types of events, instead of waiting for someone else to do it. This was Gilliam’s 5th year attending the event.
During its performance, the group P.O.B.U.M.S. Society took the crowd by surprise when they spewed out their poetic flows. P.O.B.U.M.S. stands for Positive Outlooks Balances Universal Madness Strategically. Society stands for Sisters of Conscious Intellect Educating the Youth.
Although this is the 6th annual event, Mullins, Culture Stock founder is still looking for ways to get the word out about the event. “We started promoting this year in barbershops per the suggestion of someone so hopefully, that helps.” She is looking for the event to become more diverse. She pointed out that TBA is a Hispanic group and P.O.B.U.M.S Society is an African American group but there could be more representation from other ethnic groups. “We have a little white girl organizing an event, “she said, referring to herself. Mullins is open to suggestions on how to get the word out.
For more information on the event and how to volunteer for upcoming events, visit www.culturestock.org.
Culture Stock is a nonprofit organization that was started in 2012. Its mission is to promote the community through the arts.
TBA is a Hispanic hip-hop group which was founded by Sam Cervantes a local artist who created “Angel Wings”, a mural on the east wall of LaFrance Bakery, 118 E. Galena Blvd.

MY MEMORIES OF JOHANNESBURG - City of GOLD.
article published 4 Feb 2009. Written and compiled by Anne Lapedus Brest.

MEMORIES OF JOHANNESBURG, CITY OF GOLD
Written and Compiled By
© ANNE LAPEDUS BREST
On the 4th February 1961, when I was 14 years old, and my brother Robert was 11, our family came to live in Johannesburg.
We had left Ireland, land of our birth, leaving behind our beloved Grandparents, family, friends, and a very special and never-to-be-forgotten little furry friend, to start a new life in South Africa, land of Sunshine and Golden opportunity…………… The Goldeneh Medina…...
We came out on the “Edinburgh Castle”, arriving Cape Town 2nd Feb 1961. We did a day tour of Chapmans Peak Drive, Muizenberg, went to somewhere called the “Red Sails” and visited our Sakinofsky/Yodaiken family in Tamboerskloof.
We arrived at Park Station (4th Feb 1961), Jhb, hot and dishevelled after a nightmarish train ride, breaking down in De Aar and dying of heat.
We lived in Becker Street, Yeoville, Robert went to K.E.S and I went to Barnato Park (aka Johannesburg Girls’ High) in Berea. Robert was in Cadets , I played hockey, and bunked school (with Gilda Goldblatt!!) Our next-door neighbours were Michael and Sandra Golding, Zena and Teddy Cohen lived in Becker Street also and Ronnie and Nigel Baskin lived in Yeo Street near the Richters - Selma and Charles Richter,.
Girls at Barnato Park lived in mainly Hillbrow, Berea, Yeoville, Bellevue, Houghton, Orchards, Melrose and Dunkeld. After school, many of us would catch the 19 bus from Tudhope Avenue Berea to Raleigh Street, Yeoville, but many girls were collected by beautifully coiffed and bee-hived mothers with long painted nails, arriving to collect them in huge fancy Chevrolets, with big cats’ eye tail-lights.
ONLY IN SOUTH AFRICA …………………………….
Oy, but I had to get used to so many new expressions ……..
“ See you this arvy, Hey? “ and “See you just now, Annie” (I learnt the hard way that “Just Now” didn’t mean immediately)
“There’s the new girl in Form 3, …….. Shame!!” “My sister’s baby is so cute, …… Shame!
People would give me directions and tell me to turn at the robot.
Can I Lend your book?
Whatever I said, the girls would answer “Is it” ?
The shul is full of KUGELS……………….
Why did the bus-conductor call us all “Donkey” when he collected our tickets???? “Thank you,… Donkey” and the Klippies would say it in a high-pitched voice. “Thank you, donkeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyyy”
You MUST come visit this arvy, see? You MUST go and see Cliff Richard at the Collosseum. You MUST buy the latest Elvis Presley record. MUST, MUST, MUST (only in South Africa! Say that “MUST” to people overseas, they think you are a control-freak). (took me a while to get used to it!!)
G.C. EMMMMM
Girls would talk about great talent at a party, and they talked about Chracks , boys talked about “good stock” .
It’s a blerry gemors!! Stoep. Goeie Môre , Lekker Bly,
My skat. Klop Dissel Boom gaan! Klappies. Lappies.
Wag ‘n bietjie. I’m Gatvol !!!! Deurmekaar.

Where’s the jol tonight, hey? Do youse know?
Don’t tune me kak, hey? Ag! Yes no fine. Stovies. He’s fab - such a doll !!!, He thinks he’s such a big Bok. It’s not so lekker.

Don’t chaaf my cherry, hey! Don’t grip my cherry…
Who do you think you’re looking at, China?
Don’t tune me grief, ek sê. Voetsak! Sies! Ag! Siestog, Jong!
My bike is buggered.
Bugger off !

Don’t talk to them, they are all such Rubbishes.

It’s Kwaai……..
Well, yes , no fine, Those were the days my friend we thought they’d never end …...

Bokkie recently told someone that on the 7th April he will have been at the shop for 55 years California Tailors, and the Yeoville Recreation Center in Raleigh St, where Sandra Stein won the “Miss Yeoville” competition in about 1962 .(Bokkie Jekison died before the 7th April, suddenly, whilst out on a walk)

And Observatory café where boys played pinball and they had ‘Pennyline Sweets’ where you could buy 2 for a penny and cafés had Jukeboxes . Remember the old 78 records (those were in the fifties though) and then the LPs - wow, and when those came out we thought we’d died and gone to Heaven, and the 45 speed records. Cassettes, and tape recorders, reel-to-reel tape-recorders (I still have one).
Boys had a way of walking, hands in pockets, only the thumbs visable and rolled from side to side with a sort of rolling gait, and the more they rolled as they walked, the more macho they felt!
Who remembers ????…… Debras (Schmaltz), and when a tub of Yoghurt cost 8c, and an Appleltizer cost the same, a bar of Cadburys chocolate cost 5c and there was a chocolate bar called “Honeycrisp” also for 5c, and you could get a Toasted Cheese for 15c. Stamps cost 2½ cents . If you left the envelope open, it was cheaper… Airletter forms in green, airmail writing paper, airmail envelopes and Basildon Bond writing paper.

YEOVILLE BOXING CLUB - Sammy Samson and his son Cedric who sang as a child, and he had a group at some stage called “the FireFlies” I think Alan Goldstein who was also a child singer may well have been part of that band ( later known as Alan Gold) .
How many people remember……. The Black Steer in Yeoville - fab apple crumble and double thick cream and in the 1960s the price of a Steerburger, with Pickled Cucumber, fried onions and salad was 45c ……….but at the Golden Spur, the Burger would cost you 50c and the Yeoville crowd felt that was too expensive!) Norman’s Grill (for Prawns!) in the Jeppe Hotel. East Africa Pavilion (well known for it’s curries, where the waiters wore a red “fez”, The 252 Tavern. His Majesty’s Cellars, 69 Grill.

And Dr. Chris Barnard, (Heart Transplants Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town)
And the …… the motor racing at Kyalami Race Track
And the Motor Rallys?. Anyone remember Lionel Gilinsky? He raced something called “Production cars” in “Endurance Races” at Old Grand Central Circuit ( Halfway House, now called Midrand) in the late 60’s and 70’s - and later “Historic” Cars at Kyalami Race Track. He was known to be amongst South Africa’s Top 3 Racing and Motor rally drivers in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Not bad for a boy from Welkom!!

HILLBROW. We always went to The Curzon and Clarendon for 7/6- , ( later 75c,) and then a Bioscope called the International (owned by Herman and Maxwell Youngelson) was opened at the top of Pretoria Street and there it would cost you between 90c and R1.00, but the seats were so comfy and the whole bioscope was so plush, that the Yeovillites felt it was well worth the extra.
Anyone remember The French Hairdressing Saloon (a Mrs. Sher was the manageress) and the OK Bazaars and Carnival Novelty.

The word “THE. ” I learned in school that before a consonant we say “THE” . “THE” bed, “THE” table, “THE” book. And before a vowel the have to prounce the “the” as “THEE”……………. “THEE” Apple, “THEE” elephant, “THEE” egg.
So why then, do we hear (only in South Africa) people saying “THUH” apple, “THUH” Elephant, “THUH” egg. Please hold for “THUH” Operator. And why do some of us say “the PHOTA” when it is clearly “PHOTO”.
FOLKSINGING Era . Who remembers the Nite beat, run by Abe (who ran the tuck shop at the Yeoville Swimming Pool), and the folk-singers Ian & Ritchie ( Ian Lawrence and Ritchie Morris), Des and Dawn (Lindberg)(“And the Seagull’s name was Nelson”) (Dawn wore her hair in two pigtails then) Colin Shamley, Dave Marks (“Mountains of Men” and “Master Jack”) Cornelia, And The Troubador, The College Set - Andy Levy, Hugh Solomon, Norman Cohen) Keith Blundell and the Baladeers, Aubrey and Beryl Ellis. Mervyn and Jocelyn Miller (from Potch). Mel, Mel and Julian (Mel Miller, Mel Green, and Julian Laxton.
BIKERS and the Hell’s Angels, wearing black leather jackets, chains and the peace sign often around their necks, roaring down Pretoria St and Kotze St on Harley Davidsons making a helluva racket, some of the more nervous Biker girls precariously hanging onto their boyfriend’s backs, but “the in girls” didn’t hold on, they somehow balanced themselves by placing their hands nonchelantly behind the seat, looking around, throwing their hair back, with a “don’t- sig–with- me” look, lazer- beam- eyes, -looking–out- through- thick- black- fringes, and a tattoo here and there.
And nobody did “sig” with them, either.
The FLYING SAUCER is where they all met. Pretoria Street, Hillbrow.
Hillbrow’s Eateries and Coffee Bars Doney’s coffee bar for the best cappuccino in town (who remembers Jeftah and George, the Duke) Café Wien (later on), with the most comfortable seats, it was like sitting in your own lounge, Café Krantzler, Dunk-a-donut, The Milky Lane, the Florian (where the bus turned to go down Twist street to Town). Mi Vami, Lucky Luke (Steak House in the 70s), Fontana, open 24 hours a day, (famous for their chickens roasted on a spit,) Pikin-a-chicken, Porter House (Frulatto and the best Pink Sauce in town) not to mention the steaks (not that I ate them being one of the Kosher Kids, but I was sorely tempted, HA HA HA) and the German Beer Keller, The Hamburger Hut, Golden Egg, Bella Napoli. Kiss-Kiss.
The CHEZA in Jeppe Street. Famous for Muesli.
HAIR STYLES and fashion. We dyed our hair black with Palette where you dropped a white tablet into some black gunky muck and we all had pitch black hair. The Blacker your hair, the more “sharp” you were. We teased it and wore it in Wings, and the bigger the Wings were, the more “with it” you were. And remember the stiff petticoats under your many Flared skirts, and cat-eye glasses? Helanca stove-pipes, in all colours. Studded Belts, Box Pleated skirts, and ID Bracelets (with your boyfriend’s name engraved on the inside), Plaid pinafores came later on, and a ridiculous little narrow velvet bow on a clip or hairgrip which we found a space for in the teased bird’s nest, usually just to the back of the fringe. And also a thin chiffon scarf tied around the hair. White high-heeled shoes (I wouldn’t be seen dead in half the things we wore then)
My Mom always said that my hair was like a Bird’s Nest at the back, but then I didn’t have eyes at the back of my head, (just as well). Boys wore their hair sleeked back with Brylcream and Vitalis and all bought their t-shirts from the Skipper Bar. (Arnie, Mervyn, Earle and Barry Sacks) Black t-shirts with thin white and red stripes around the neck. And a corresponding white tee-shirt, with black and red stripes. If you didn’t have one of those, you were not one of the “in” boys!!!!
And then girls started to iron their hair. I remember my Mother used to plonk my head onto the ironing board, and put a brown paper bag on top of it, and iron away until I had sleek straight hair, but then the minute it rained, I looked at though someone has plugged me into an electric socket…. Durbs did the same to all those who had out-of-control hair - Frizzed them out in 2 mns flat, in fact as soon as you got to Van Reenen’s Pass into Natal, you knew you were there because your hair suddenly was on its own mission……..
and who Whirled their hair????? Oy - a bittereh gelechter….. We whirled it One way, then the other way, and you had dead straight hair (until you hit the 505 Club and the first thing you’d notice is that your fringe was just “not there” anymore) and the rest of your poor hair style was all moving in different directions. If it was raining, and you opened your front door, bang went the straight hair.
Remember those little DOEKs we wore on our head when we went to Durbs. I have a photo of myself wearing one.
COME ON GIRLS - who used to sleep with curlers/rollers in their hair!! and who remembers using the inside of a TOILET ROLL as an emergency roller??????? And all this lot would be covered over by a hairnet. Of course morning brought a splitter- of- a- headache from the curlers digging into your head. Anyone remember? Bet you do!!! I DO!! There you are, the big ADMIT………. What on EARTH did we look like? I don’t even want to think about it …………………
I always say that if I have to come back in another life, I want to come back as ME but with dead straight hair. Second choice, I wouldn’t mind coming back as one of my spoilt-out-of-control Dachshunds either (but the straight haired type, not the wiry haired) (ha ha)
GYM: Bodybuilders, weight-lifters and wannabes came strutting out of Gyms such as Sam Busa and Monte Osher all fit and glistening, with huge shoulder muscles, and killer smiles - carrying black gym bags. And Reg Park’s Gym, ALSO somewhere in Hillbrow.
YOGA: Mannie and Alan FINGER, Nina OBEL
MODEL AGENCIES: . Stella Grove and Gianna Pizanello
DANCING STUDIOS and DANCERS: Natalie Stern the late Mercedes Molina, Jeffrey Neiman (Enrique Segovia) & Rhoda Rifkin, Bernice Hotz , Gitanella (Spanish, Ballet,) Shirley Klitzner (O”h) (later in the 70s Hilary Etkind - taught with Rhoda and Jeffrey) (anyone who ever loved Spanish dancing, will remember Mercedes Molina/ Jeffrey Neiman as a brilliant dance duo) (and will remember the very sad passing away of Shirley Klitzner (O”h) when she was barely into her twenties).
PHOTOGRAPHERS. Maurice, Kurt Slesinger, Karklin, when it was fashionable to stand your wedding photo on an small easel on the floor. Either carpet or parquet flooring. Stella Nova .
RUGBY. Alan MENTER Springbok Flyhalf, and Sid NOMIS Springbok - Center, and later Wing), Alan is married to Pam (ex Pretoria) and his Brothers are Brian, Robert (Robbie) and Mandy (Malcolm (Z”l)) Menter. Their Mom Esmé (O”h) grew up with mine, in Dublin. Syd is married to Ann.
CRICKET. Dr. Ali BACHER former South African cricket captain and one of the greastet cricketers in South Africa. Ali BACHER received South Africa’s Sports Merit Award, the country’s HIGHEST athletics honour. Ali is married to Shira (I am friendly with Shira’s sister Marsha KARKLIN,) and I remember their daughter Ann being a Tennis champion when she was just a little kid of 11 in the days of the “Jewish Guild” Other well known South African Jewish cricketers came later on, Mandy YACHAD , and later Adam BACHER, nephew of Dr. Ali Bacher
TYPEWRITERS. My first memory of a type writer was that old black thing with with a keyboard with round circular lettering and a typewriter ribbon. My Mom used one in Dublin, Then I remember the Olivetti and also a swiss typewriter, but the ones where you would have to bash a silver thing on the upper right to go to a new line. I remember electric typewriters, and using a white powdery Tippex thing for covering up mistakes, except that they never quite covered them up, particularly on the carbon copies. And remember the carbon copies.. HA HA, and when I worked for lawyers, they didn’t allow those tippex rub-outs, so one little mistake and you had to start all over again. Remember STENCILS and Roneo-ing various blurb. I can remember using a bright shocking pink liquid with the stencils, I think. We wrote to “Messers. So and so”, and we’d end off with “ I remain, Yours Faithfully”
WEDDINGS and when the Bride/Kallah would change into her “going away outfit” and the blissful couple would leave the wedding to go off on their honeymoon. When Bride’s kept their vails on the entire night. When there were only 4 pole-holders and the Bride’s parents paid for the entire wedding, and the Groom/Chossen’s parents would pay for the booze, the photographer and the flowers.
THE CIRCUS Boswell-Wilkie. I hated the circus, terrified of the animals and sorry for them at the same time, a hypnotized crocodile once got out- of- control and strarted climbing out of the ring into the screaming audience. Clowns clowning around were never my scene, and when the trapeze artists or the tight-rope walkers did their act, my heart was always in my mouth, terrified they would fall or something. One did once, I can never get that memory out of my mind.

Around 1964 came the Beatles, (“8 days a week”, “Love Love me do” and later, “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s club Band” “Hey Jude”) The Rolling Stones, (Angie) the Mini Skirt era and Mary Quant and the birth of the Discothèque . Op Art earings in gaudy colours and the skirts continued to get shorter. Girls wore double breasted Pin stripe suits which made a come back. The Boutiques were born. I remember the BENATER family had a great boutique “Carnabies”, at the top of Rissik Street, or near there. It was, I think, the first shop of it’s kind. Very modern, trendy and for the young (20s and 30s). And the Pink Panther was in Hillbrow - Also very trendy gear.
Remember Twiggy?………. She was on every Magazine cover, often holding her Teddy Bear, feet pidgeon-toed, with beautiful big brown eyes, and a body so thin, she could fit through a crack in the wall. She started a trend, her, and “the Shrimp” - (Jean Shrimpton), and Mary Quant.
AND Op Art Earings in strange shapes and gaudy colours, shorter skirts, and flattie shoes.
The First Disco was at the Summit Club, Marrakech, (around 1966) with Go-Go dancers Dixie, Felicity Fouché, and Christine all dancing away in the micro-est of Mini-Skirts. Johnny Martin (previously known as Martin Raff) was the owner, and I heard he also owned a club called 007.
Someone called Neville Peacock was the Marrakech DJ and there were psychdelic and ultra violet lights and if you stood under the latter, all your “klein-goed” shone like a beacon for all to see.
And the 505 also in Hillbrow. Eddie Eckstein and Paul Ditchfield - The Bats played there on a Sunday ), and the Diamonds and Gene Rockwell (Heart!”) as did the Basemen (Ronnie Cline on Keyboard, Ralph Simon – Singer, Rodney Caines – Bass Guitar, Leon Bilewitz – drummer and Irwin Kalis – Lead Guitar) and Clive Calder, (Les Markowitz on drums) also played at “Club-a-go-go” and also they toured around the countryside and played at various venues.
Also Johnny Congos (“Sealed with a Kiss”), Johnny and the G-Men, and Johnny Sharp, 4 Jacks and a Jill. The Staccatos. Did I mention Manfred Mann? (“pretty Flamingo”)
MORE CLUBS - TJ’s (town) and The Yellow Submarine (Hillbrow) (owned by Martin HART) and the Boat (Buccleuch) were in the latter part of the sixties and the Downstairs later called The Purple Marmalade somewhere in Hillbrow. Another Disco was owned by George McCauley, brother of Ray, opposite Joubert Park (Club-A-Go-Go), His Granny worked in the tuckshop and was always so nice to everyone. The Band there was the “Falling Leaves” and George was in the Band. The Electric Circus, And Raffles , a very fancy disco/restaurant but that was in the late 70s. Owned by Dave Kerney. (I think). The Stable in Jan Smuts Avenue. The Out of Town Club
And who remembers the other Bioscopes - The Colosseum with the twinkling lights, Cliff Richard sang there once, and a few girls from Barnato Park were expelled for bunking school and going to his concerts. His Majestys, Monte Carlo (French Movies), The Empire, 20th Cen. Fox - Pritchard Street, Cinerama (Claim and Noord) In those days there was an interval after the News and the Cartoons, and Usherettes would be standing at each exit with a tray with all the Munchies and Chocolates, cold-drinks, etc. The Apollo in Doornfontein. I’ve already mentioned the Yeoville Bioscopes earlier on. Who remembers the “Midnight Shows” the Astra and the Victory in Orange Grove, The Rex in Greenside. The Plaza, the Bijou in town and some flea-bitten run down Café Bio which no decent self-respecting girl would touch with a barge-pole, but I can’t remember it. A lot of the Yale College boys went there. But not the girls!!!!
People smoked in the bioscopes (“scopes”) then and when you looked up, you saw it all swirling around in smoke from the projector. Nice and healthy!! but nobody ever noticed it. It was just a part of life in the sixties.
REMEMBER WHEN ………. we went to Bioscope on a Saturday night, dressed up in your A-line dress, or a Box- Pleated skirt, or tiny hound’s-tooth straight skirt in black/white and your black patent high-heeled shoes, with a Black Patent leather bag to match, and your gloves (which you carried in your hand). And later you wore your Dress with the shorter hemline, Mini-Skirts, and your “A-line evening coat” (Jackie Kennedy), just on the knee, and your flattie shoes, the hair teased up to the high heavens and lacquered so heavily that if it rained, you looked like glue. (Boys hated teased and lacquered hair)
And the boys wore jarmins and Elvis Presley hair-styles with thin ties made of nylon or similar in a machine-crochet style. (Later when the Beatles came in, boys’ hairstyles changed forever, and no boy would be seen dead with Brylcream or Vitalis plastered on his head). Boys would never previously been seen in pastel colours, but the Beatles changed all those dark shirts for pink, mauve and lemon, with a pin collar near the tie.
Boys would buy you a 75c box of Black Magic chocolate at Interval. If you put it into your black patent leather handbag and never offered him one, then your name was mud, and girls judged boys by whether they opened the car door for you …. or not!
AND SOME OF THE MOVIE STARS …., Natalie Wood, Kathryn Hepburn, Rock Hudson, Doris Day, Steve McQueen, Sohia Loren, Alain Delon (the heart-throb of the 60’s) (who remembers him in “Purple noon”) Gina Lollobridgida, Raquel Welsh, Bridgitte Bardot, Ursula Andress, Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson (One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest), Shirley McLaine, Julie Christie, Michael Caine, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Paul Newman, Sal Mineo, Suzanne Pleshette, Richard Burton, Sean Connery, Omar Sharif, Charlton Heston, Gregory Peck (to die for?) James Dean
POPULAR MOVIES. West side story, King Kong, Gone with the Wind, Exodus, Dr. No, *From Russia with Love, * (Remember in that movie, the Russian woman (was her name someone KREBBS?) who had a knife come out of her boot and it shot straight into poor Sean Connery’s shin bone. EINA! Just thinking about it, hurts me) Bridge on the River Kwai, Dr. Zhivago, Goldfinger, (it had a great theme song in it by I think Shirley Bassey) Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Annie Get your Gun, Dingaka.
And the DRIVE INs Old Pta Road - Jhb Drive in, The 5-Star (Eloff St.Ext), The Velskoen (If a girl was seen at the drive in with a boy, she got a “bad name” and the same for the Café Bio’s. It was just not for a nice Jewish girl!!
REMEMBER WHEN ….. there was NO Bioscope on Sunday nights
THEATRES. Alhambra (Doornfontein) , Brian Brooke (Braamfontein), Market Theatre ( Newtown), Alexander theater , Jacques Brel, Apollo (Doornfontein).
Remember the Adverts for all the Cigarettes, Players, Craven "A", Dunhill (remember the maroon Rolls Royce?) Benson & Hedges (Gold) , Lexington (That’s the one!), Gunston (remember him on a raft, all macho, manly, unshaven and rough and ready tumbling through impossible rivers?) Horseshoe Tobacco, Gold Dollar, Texan, (which the boys would hold between their thumb and middle finger) Lucky Strike, Gauloise and Peter Stuyvesant (for the fun lovers, remember the wonderful places they went to and the great clothes they wore, swimming in glorious lagoons, skiing down snow-capped mountains, all the beautiful people, all having wonderful fun?) I never smoked,(well, I have to say that, in case my family read this article, ha ha) but after I watched the Peter Stuyvesant adverts, I really felt like buying a packet , so that I too, could go to all those magical places, and I’d look glamerous too, HA HA - (the power of advertising!) (A Bittereh Gelechter!!)
But it just looked so “in” to see people smoking, and girls would hold the cigarettes at the tips of their fingers, and waved their hands for effect as they spoke, shaking their fringes out of their eyes. People who didn’t smoke, were “squares”.
I remember Celeste GREENBLATT, taught me how to apply black pencil inside my eyelids, and ‘base” onto my face and to wear white lipstick and I taught Sandra STEIN (later Ezra) to dye her hair black, and the blacker the better, (her Mother had a FIT) - Golda (née Kaufman) (O”h) whom I saw yearly in LA and she never failed to remind me !
FLORA and FAUNA in South Africa. I remember once being enthralled by the most magnificent yellow creeper we had growing on the fence in Becker Street. I took photos of it, and sent it to my friends in Dublin to show the exotic flora and fauna is this beautiful sunny South Africa, until Michael GOLDING next door, laughed his head off and said “but that’s only Canary Creeper, it’s not much better than a common garden weed”!! African Violets, Jasmin, Golden Shower, Begonia Sherera, Bougainvillea, Pointsettia, Birds of Paradise, Cycads?. Maybe they do grow overseas too.
PARTIES in Observatory, Cyrildene and Dewetshof. We rock ‘n rolled to Elvis Presley’s “Jail house rock” & “Don’t step on my blue suede shoes”, “Rock around the Clock” in our flared skirts with stiff petticoats underneath, the more the better, and huge belts around our waists, and we wore flat shoes (75c at Maram’s chemist, and 95c for the leopard skin ones). And later we twisted with Chubby Checker (Let’s Twist again, like we did last summer ) We also did a dance called the Shake – anyone remember the song “I’ll do the Shake, the hippy- hippy shake” and also a dance called the Madison.
The Bez Valley Ou’s, on a Sat night Jol, and the Lebs would sometimes gatecrash. Usually a Scuffle and the girl’s father would have to ask them to leave. Sometimes, in stubborn cases the police would have to be called in to skop them all out. And then the party continued on, Little Richard, Cliff Richard, - sometimes a few of the kids would have a bit of “dagga”, (a zol), on the stoep or in the back garden when they thought nobody was looking, and the only way anyone kopped on was because they would come back to the party with a manic laugh, and red eyes. (and of course the smell, but if you admitted to knowing the smell, then it meant you were a dagga smoker yourself!) Trini Lopez. “If I had a hammer”
SOCIALS at Oxford Shul, The Vrede Hall, Yeoville Recreation Center, Temple Shalom, and Bands like “Dinkie and the Deans” - Jake (Gerald) Fox (Z”l) (rhythm Guitar), Barry Sacks (Lead Guitar), Spencer Hodgson (Bass guitar) and Errol Sack on the drums, would play, they also played at the Club 505 in “the Brow”. Peter Lotus well known Jhb Disc Jockey, I think he sang as well. Lots of singers used to go to Margo’s on a Sunday Afternoon, and the crowd would all hot-foot it out there after them to hear music. You could hear what sounded like a few thousand chickens all clucking their heads off and the poor fellow was protesting, saying that it was the wrong number, it wasn’t him, some mistake and besides, he had a small balcony, and he didn’t have room for crates of chickens, but The “Station Master” kept on saying that he has nowhere for them either, the fellows’ name and address were on the crates and the chickens were going to be on their way, shortly.. DISCLAIMER. This article has been written from my memories of S.Africa from 48 years ago, and if a Shul, or Hotel, or a Club is not mentioned, it doesn’t mean that they didn’t exist, it means, simply, that I don’t remember them. I can’t add them in, either, because then the article would not be “My Memories” any more.

Before you take the actually steps toward hitting your target of wealth, as defined by you, review the seven types of wealth, including but not limited to financial wealth, that truly makes life feel rich, abundant, and joyful: 1. Physical Wealth—Having the optimal health and energy in your body that makes everything you do possible. 'My Wealth Creation Formula comes from thirty years of studying the wealthy and codifying their strategies to create wealth in my own life.' I’ll teach you the nine steps that took me from a job I hated when I was 25 years old, making $30,000 a year, to owning five companies that do over $100 Million annually.
We all wish we could be wealthy. For most of us, it's a far-off dream that someday, eventually, we might be able to turn ourselves into self-made millionaires. But the truth is, building wealth isn't about putting all your hopes into 'someday.' You're never too old to start building wealth, but if you start when you're young, you have far greater potential to amass a fortune--and more time to let that fortune compound itself as you grow older.
25 Secrets To Wealth Creation Pdf Files
That being said, life in your 20s and 30s is not without its challenges; you might have student debt, a tenuous career, and dozens of unknowns that keep you from doing everything you'd like to build your wealth faster. There's no straightforward way to guarantee yourself a rich future, but these seven strategies can help you do it while you're still young.
The folly of youth is believing that there's always enough time for everything. Youngsters often believe that retirement, or wealth building, is something that comes later in life, and are more preoccupied with the concerns of the now. Unfortunately, this often leads to a cycle of 'Oh, I should do that next month,' month after month, until before you know it, you're 10 years older and you've missed out on a decade's worth of compounding interest. The first step is to stop procrastinating; saving and investing is scary, but the longer you wait to do it, the fewer advantages you have.
2. Know that there is no magic.
25 Secrets To Wealth Creation Pdf File Download
My use of the word 'secrets' in the title of this article might have brought you here hoping for a guaranteed, almost magical solution to make you wealthy. There isn't one. The fundamental objectives are simple: Make more than you spend, and use the excess to invest wisely. How you invest is up to you (with a few caveats below), but the obvious goal is to make investments that have a high likelihood of making you more money in the future. That's it. The ways to achieve this are by making more money, spending less, and investing more wisely.
Your next goal should be to invest in yourself; you are the best resource you have to accumulate wealth. Investing in yourself means spending more time on your education, refining your own skill sets, and branching out to meet new people who might help you achieve your goals. The more educated, skilled, experienced, and connected you are, the more valuable opportunities you're going to get, which means higher salaries and more options for you down the road, both of which will help you build a stronger financial foundation.
Remember the steps from point 2: Make more money, spend less, and invest wisely. Point 3 covered making more money, and this one covers spending less. Make a detailed budget for yourself based on your projected income and your current expenses. Set firm limits for your expenses, and keep a close eye on where most of your money goes--you might be surprised at some of the areas where you waste the most money. Once identified, you can start refining your budget to spend as little as possible, and funnel the rest into a savings or investment program.
Before you start regularly saving and investing money, it's usually a good idea to pay down any debts you may have accumulated. Credit card debt, student debt, and even car loans can carry heavy interest rates that drag you down, demanding monthly installments that chip away at your revenue while racking up additional interest and penalties that take away even more money from your future self. Don't let this eat away at your potential; make it a first-line priority to get rid of your debt as soon as possible.
25 Secrets To Wealth Creation Pdf File Pdf
You're young. You have a lot of years ahead of you. Now is the time to take risks. Invest in higher-risk, higher-payoff stock opportunities. Consider quitting your job to start your own business. Jump on new ventures and new opportunities. If things go south, you'll have plenty of time to make up for it. Most wealthy individuals will tell you one of their greatest keys to success has been taking calculated risks. The majority of the population sticks with the safe route, so if you want to break away from the pack, you have to try something new, possibly something uncomfortable.
Even though risk-taking is a generally rewarding strategy in your 20s and 30s, it's also a good idea to diversify your efforts. Don't build up just one skill set, or one set of professional connections. Don't rely on one type of investment, and don't gamble all your savings on one venture. Instead, try to set up multiple income streams, generate several backup plans for your goals and businesses, and hedge your bets by looking for new opportunities everywhere. This will protect you from catastrophic losses, and increase your chances of striking it big in one of your ventures.
By applying these seven secrets in full swing, you'll be able to start accumulating wealth no matter where you are in life. Yes, the first steps are hard--paying down your debt, establishing your credentials, building an investment portfolio, etc.--but if you do it early and do it right, you'll set yourself up for massive financial success later on.

THE FFL 2020/21 END OF SEASON REVIEW
The 29th season of FFL and the first one to start during a global pandemic. The season before had been totally normal till February and nothing like normal after that. That season didn’t finish until August. No Euro 2020 and a September start to the new season. As we approached the start of the football season it looked like Coronavirus was in decline, number of cases and deaths were dropping very low and life felt a bit more normal, we had no idea of the real world horrors that awaited us all. That being said the 2020/21 season was unique, for all the wrong and some right reasons. During the August break there was the Messi saga. Harry Maguire had been scraping with the Greek police. Foden and Greenwood, while on England duty had broken Covid rules and got caught sneaking a couple of Icelandic girls into their hotel room,
The season started much later and as I got my last ever EMR HST for a day at the seaside the last few teams started to flood in. Michael Dymond was last in, would the champions’ league winner feature in the new season. League champion Steve Tatham was among the favourites to do well, along with FA cup winner Matt Wheeler. Jackie knight had been the golden girl and challenged right up to the last game, could she challenge again? Could the big guns of Mullin and the Hawk get back to winning ways after a very disappointing season in 2020. As per normal the Team Aroma girls tried to make some very strange picks, including Hansen, Beckham and sadly retired Aroma’s own Leighton Baines. Kev Dillon shocked the world and picked Liverpool Players. Following in father Danny and Uncle Marc Lawson’s footsteps Anton joined our league. Andy Flanagan almost did a Stuart Pearce and forgot to pick a keeper. All of these issues fixed for the deadline and 33 teams started the league. With no city or Utd playing in week one the normal Bennetts Shield and Champions league had a delayed start.
As I travelled home on the train from Skegness, there was a feeling that this could be a strange season. Leeds ran Champions Liverpool very close in a high scoring game. Pam Taylor, Team Aroma and Anton Lawson were the early pace setters. The first weekend of October saw the Bennett’s Shield and the start of the Champion’s league. The weekend will be remember as the one where Man Utd conceded 6 and Liverpool 7. In the lowest ever scoring match Steve Tatham beat Matt Wheeler by 1 point to win the Shield. This was the only bright spot for either of them all season. A week later and one of the most controversial moment of the season. In a very fiery Mersey Side Derby Pickford and VVD both went for the ball. Pickford’s challenge would change the season for Liverpool. VVD wouldn’t play again all season. Souness called it an assault, he’d know all about that. Pickford got deaths threats and for the rest of the season everything was Pickford’s fault. Bale return to the premier league, but too late to make anyone’s teams. By the end of the month Mark Taylor was top and so were Everton.
The pandemic hadn’t gone and cases were starting to rocket again, by early November the UK were in Lockdown 2. Football did continue, but behind closed doors and with fake crowds. The very busy fixtures and players coming down with Covid meant that players were dropping like flies. This hurt the FFL managers as much as their Premiership counterparts. Defending Champions league Champion Michael was out the Champions league at the first group stage, along with Steve Tatham, Disco Lee Ritchie and Jackie Knight. By December Taylor was top and Taylor was bottom, sorry Dad. With some matches being cancelled due to the virus there were delays in the champions’ league. The pubs in Lincoln stayed closed, we were out of Lockdown 2, but into tier 4. Pen points were rolling in everywhere with so many players missing. It was already looking like a very low scoring season.
The Christmas number one was The Hawk, with Kieron 2nd and Mark Taylor 3rd. It was a very strange Christmas, Boris had promised a nearly normal one, but the emergence of a new variant from Kent quickly ran through the country like wildfire. The government promised a 5 days of Christmas, but quickly tried to stop this. Unfortunately nothing could stop the full force of this second wave. 40k, 50k even 60k new cases in one day and up to 1500 people dying per day. The UK death toll quickly passed over 100k. Lockdown 3 started and this was going to last much longer than 2. It was a very difficult and dark winter, the second wave was far deadlier than the first. The one bit of hope came in the first use of vaccines. Could these Jabs return life to normal?
By mid-January The Hawk, Kieron and Mark were top 3, but now Vicky Phillips was starting to challenge. The Champions league second group stage fixtures were still delayed, due to covid, but the FA Cup cut off point saw Danny Lawson and Jackie Knight just make it at the expense of Robyn Stanney. Vicky Phillips was now up to 3rd and in her best season. The champions’ league Semi-finals finally took shape. Kieron would play Stally and The Hawk would play Mark Kiszka. In fact both Kieron and The Hawk were looking at possible trebles.
By mid-February and Kieron had an 11pt lead over the Hawk, with Vicky 3rd and Mark 4. Kieron would play Vicky in the FA Cup semi-final. However in the Champions league Stally beat Kieron over two legs and Mark Kiszka beat the Hawk. Things were going wrong for the Hawk, out the FA cup and now out the Champions league, plus a 13 point gap to lead leader Kieron. Kieron was on for the Double and would play Danny Lawson in the FA Cup final. Kieron was looking good, but pen points and missing key players made it far from certain. Road maps out of lockdown were now being talked about. Case numbers were dropping, but still so many people dead, over 120k. The roll out of the vaccine was bringing hope that an end was in sight.
Early April and over two legs Stally won a record 4th Champions league. Once again Mark Kiszka just missed out again. Kieron was still top, but much closer, with The Hawk right on him. Cup finalist Danny Lawson was in contention too. Suddenly and out of the blue the future of football as we know it came crashing down. The so called big 6 in England joined Spanish and Italians in a break away super league. For a short time it really looked like the end of Football, but a fan backlash, backed by ex-players and even the government challenged this. A very quick and embarrassing U-TURN saw the clubs plans fall apart. The Super league was hopefully dead and gone. By the end of April only Kieron and The Hawk had passed 200 points, but were miles off Kieron’s 414 world record.
May the 1st and FA cup final weekend, Kieron v Danny. I even got the coolest man in football (James Richardson) do the preview and since outdoor hospitality was now open we did this over a cappuccino in Aroma. Man Utd were due to play Liverpool, but a mass protest against the owners and the super league brought chaos. Fans even got inside the stadium and onto the pitch. A protest also took place outside the players hotel. The match was cancelled and our FA cup was abandoned. A week later and the FA cup final took place. Both teams were missing Aubameyang so Greenwood came in for Danny and scored, Aguero for Kieron. If Aguero had slotted his penalty away, Kieron would have won, but a terrible so called Panenka cost him dearly. As a result the scores were level and it went to a Tie break six. A goal from Dallas and a clean sheet from Alisson won Danny Lawson his first trophy since 2001. Worse would come for Kieron, with Man City winning the league and resting Ederson and Pope being injured Kieron started getting penalty points, Even when Ederson returned, his defence didn’t. Allisson scored and this added to the Hawks total. Very quickly The Hawk passed him and both Mark’s closed the gap.
Leicester City won their first ever FA Cup, beating Chelsea in front of some fans. Yes limited crowds were now back, the vaccine programme was making a difference, even I had my first jab, but the emergence of a new variant from India was starting to threaten the return to normal.
Final week of the season and The Hawk was clear of Kieron, Mark Kiszka and Mark Taylor. Senol Durmush, Tappy, Jackie Knight, Goodo and Oliver Taylor-Yassin were battling for the final champions league spots. Lee Ritchie and Chris Geoghegan were trying to avoid the wooden spoon. Penalty points had completely derailed Kieron’s season, at one point he was on for a possible treble, but not anymore.
The final Sunday saw The Hawk increase his lead and win his first ever FFL Title. Kieron Mullin ended with nothing. Mark Kiska came third and Danny Lawson came 4th with the FA Cup. Mark Taylor 5th and Vicky Phillips 6th. Senol Durmush, Jackie Knight and Pam Taylor took the final champions league spots from Tappy, Goodo and Ollie.
Thank for another great season of FFL, it’s the 30th season next time and I look forward to this, but before then its Euro FFL this summer, can Flynny defend his title?
Final thought. Is it really all Pickfords fault?

#stayconnectedHUNTSVILLE || Self-Care Tips
Over the past few weeks, as we’ve been focusing on keeping our communities, families, and ourselves healthy by following guidelines and staying at home, it’s becoming increasingly clear to us how important it is to develop routines and tactics that will help us stay mentally and emotionally strong.
We asked our Scout Guide members to share some tips and tricks that they are using to take care of themselves...
Dr. Marlin Gill, Elamar MedSpa || Take Care of Your Hands and Face With all of the hand washing we are all doing right now, one thing we don’t always think about is washing your hands each morning and night before washing your face and applying skincare products. Washing your hands with soap and water before you touch your face with them will help prevent anything on them from transferring to your face, including viruses, bacteria, dirt, etc. that can cause breakouts or your complexion to look dull, as well as preventing illness.

Jennifer Mullins, Interiors by Consign || Keep a Schedule We are trying to keep a normal schedule. Going to bed at the same time and getting up and going into the stores for a few hours or checking email and social messages from home each morning. I’m personally still exercising and working out at home with workouts sent to me from my trainer from ACA. (T3training-Tim Tillman) I’m staying accountable by sending a screenshot to him of my Fitbit daily. Feels good to have some schedule.

Leslie Ecklund, CEO of Burritt || Meditation Leslie Ecklund, CEO of Burritt on the Mountain, suggests meditation during this time. She has been practicing it daily and has found great peace and comfort.
Leslie suggests trying an app called Insight Timer that is free and has thousands of meditation options. There is also an app that is free for the next several months called 10% Happier that has lots of good beginner information. It is amazing how mindfulness and meditation can help calm and center you in the midst of this unprecedented fear and anxiety.

Paul Matheny-Matheny Goldmon AIA || Creativity and Movie Comfort It’s a crazy time for Paul ... running his architectural firm from home, moving, homeschooling his 4 kids with his wife Rachel, and like all of us, trying to keep centered and happy.
Paul is finding that he is really enjoying tapping into his creativity. He finds that isolation is the place to cultivate it. He has revisited an old 15 year old painting, bringing it new life by adding more paint and some wood details.
Paul is also finding comfort in an old movie collection, DVDs, not even downloads. He loves anything from Writer/Director/Producer Cameron Crowe, Miller’s Crossing, and High Fidelity.

Louisa DiLeone-Bloom Counseling || Practice Gratitude
I have been working on taking time to notice and reflect upon the things I am grateful for, even if they are small. It’s a proven way to increase happiness in the moment! I’ve always been a big fan of writing thank you notes and find that sharing my appreciation for others strengthens my relationships and makes me feel good. I also stop to smell the flowers (literally!) on my daily walks to remind myself of how grateful I am for the beauty that is everywhere in our city.
